411 Games Fact or Fiction 11.02.09: Aladdin, M-Rated Wii Games, Eternal Darkness 2, More
Posted by Ramon Aranda on 11.02.2009

And we're back with another edition of Fact or Fiction. This week, we have Jeffrey Harris and Todd Vote giving us their thoughts as they take some time off from game reviewing. I'll be your moderator here so let's get to it!

1: M-rated titles most certainly have a place on the Nintendo Wii

Jeffrey Harris FACT : Is fatback greasy?  Of course.  I mean No More Heroes, hells yeah!  Not to mention Madworld!  Wii's done a very good job in catering to demographics that aren't into PS3 and Xbox 360, but there's still feasibility to have M-rated games released on the Wii.  It'd be ridiculous and stupid not to.  There's money to be made.

Todd Vote FACT : I agree with Jeffrey here. The Wii may not be considered the "hardcore" console, but that doesn't mean there isn't any room for M rated titles. Why should Nintendo shut themselves out of the race simply because they have a younger demographic?

Score: 1 for 1 - By the way, Dead Space: Extraction is really good.

Round 2: The fact that there is still no Eternal Darkness 2 pisses you off.

Jeffrey Harris FICTION : Not really no. I never played the first game from Gamecube, and I'm honestly not invested in the future of this potential gaming series. I'm much too wrapped up in kicking ass in Arkham Asylum right now.

Todd Vote FICTION : I've never played Eternal Darkness, so there is no reason for me to be upset by the lack of the sequel.

Score: 2 for 2 - I've played it and the game rocks. A current-gen edition would be awesome, am I right readers?

Round 3: You consider Aladdin (Genesis/SNES) to be one of the better movie-based games of all-time.

Jeffrey Harris FACT : The Genesis and SNES versions are actually night and day different, but they were still very good and a lot of fun to play.  It sort of annoyed me that in the SNES version you couldn't use any weapons besides a freaking apple, and the Genie wasn't really in the Genesis version, but he popped up and helped you out in the SNES level where you are actually in his lamp which was cool.

Todd Vote FACT : But it can't hold a candle to The Lion King. Disney did some great things in the days of the Genesis and SNES, Aladdin and The Lion King are perfect examples.

Score: 3 for 3 - I rented this bad boy over and over till I beat it. Good game.

And now for the championship rounds!

Round 4: Whether the DSi update is really necessary or not, it'll still sell like hotcakes.

Todd Vote FICTION : I was going to go with fact on this one, because Nintendo's handhelds usually sell like hotcakes, but for some reason I just don't get that feeling from the new DSi. For one, didn't the DSi just release? Now they expect people to rush out and buy a newer version of virtually the same machine with a few new perks? I just don't see it selling as well as they hoped initially. But Christmas is just around the corner, hence the reason I am torn. I'll go with Fiction.

Jeffrey Harris FACT : Todd, as awesome and brilliant as I think you are, you are in the wrong here.  The Christmas season is right around the corner, and parents will be getting their kids the new DSi.  Parents will soon be fighting tooth and nail over each other to get the last DSi at Gamestop.  Well sales might not what they were some time ago, but people will still snatch this up.  The thing is, when the holidays roll around, what are people going to generally get?  The newer fancier model.  If they are out of that, parents will have to settle for the original DSi.  And if not that, then used DS's and DS Lite, or shudder, Gameboy Micro!  I've seen it happen!   Gamestop around the holidays generally also institutes some trade-in programs where it might be worth it to the consumer to trade stuff in to get the new DSi as well.

Score: 3 for 4

Round 5: Out of all the major publishers, you'd say Capcom has been the best of the lot in terms of downloadable games via PSN/XBLA/VC.

Todd Vote FACT : Capcom has definitely been leading the pack. All the Street Fighter games, Mega man, Bionic Commando just to name a few. Who has released more downloadable games than them? I expected other developers to follow suit sooner than later, but so far I've been disappointed by all but a handful of downloadable games. I thought Rare for one would be leading the way on dl only games, but apparently they don't want me to have Killer Instinct.

Jeffrey Harris FACT : Definitely going with fact much like the esteemed Todd Vote here.  Mega Man 8 was fantastic, and also the Capcom Classics collections that are available on DLC as well.  Also ditto in wanting Killer Instinct on my virtual console as well.  But I want the arcade version, not the downgraded but still good SNES version.

Score: 4 for 5 - Capcom is all over it aren't they?

Round 6: You enjoy gaming with 3D glasses.

Todd Vote FICTION : Though I haven't done any 3D gaming on the current generation, the last game I remember using 3D glasses was I think Outrun on the original NES. I didn't think it added anything to the game but a headache then, and I don't see it being much different now. I understand the technology has improved, but the last 3D film I saw didn't seem any better than the ones of the 70's and 80's. Why should I expect it to be different from games?

Jeffrey Harris FICTION : There was one game on display at E3 that you could play with the 3D glasses.  And despite that at first it was kind of neat, ultimately it does little to really enhance or wow me with the gameplay.  I really just want a good, fun game to play.  3D glasses for a game seems like an extra pain I don't need for my gaming.

Final Score: 5 for 6

Ok now we turn it over to you, our readers. Fact or Fiction? Let us know!

If you haven't played Eternal Darkness yet you should probably track down a copy. It'll be well worth the effort.

What does Eternal Darkness have to do with Aladdin? Also shame on you two for not playing it.

Not gonna lie: fairly disappointed that neither of you have played Eternal Darkness.

Eternal Darkness is the shit they need to make another one.

1. FACT: There's always room for more potential hits when it comes to the Mature Market on the Wii. Games like Dead Space Extraction need some love. It's more than a "Run in the mill on rails shooter", as there's some strategy put to it, and you could always go back to this game whenever you want to test yourself to see if you can do better each time. While games like Madworld didn't do amazing in sales, it's still a game worth picking up nonetheless, especially since it's $30.

2. FICTION: Jeffrey and Todd, can I join your club? I haven't played Eternal Darkness Either.

3. FACT: But only because it's awesome. Both the Genesis and SNES ones may be different, but they're both as awesome as it gets!

4. FACT: Of course this will sell well. DS/DSL/DSi has been popular with a lot of people, and this new model (like it or not) will not be an exception.

5. FACT: A Thousand Times, but Konami has a lot of great classics with the Rebirth series (Gradius, Contra, and soon Castlevania on Wiiware, with a Rocket Knight on the way for XBLA/PSN/Steam). Capcom did dish out some cool stuff like SSF2THD Remix, classic VC games, and their biggest DL Title, Mega Man 9. They need to make Mega Man X9, and I'll be happier!

6. FICTION: Need I say more?

Great week as always. I still want people to play games like A Boy and his Blob and Muramasa, and BUY Dead Space Extraction!!!

Eternal Darkness is awesome I bought the game a few months ago since I didn't own my own copy. I got it because I wanted to play it for my gf

Dudes - your Wii can play gamecube games - there is no excuse NOT to play Eternal Darkness. Its the shiz.

I disagree; I never likd the SNES Aladdin, but the Mega Drive version was AWESOME, for want of a better word.

In #6, The racing game you remember playing in 3D on the NES was most likely Rad Racer. Outrun was a SEGA property and was most certainly not appearing on the Nintendo console back then.

Eternal darkness was awesome, but going back and playing it now shows it hasn't aged well. But if a 2nd game were to come out I'd probably buy it

Alright, I'll do it. I dust off the Gamecube and try to track down Eternal Darkness.

Quick correction. I meant Mega Man 9 and not Mega Man 8. Please don't hurt me.

Eternal Darkness was great. I read it as "Eternal Champions" though and thought, "Who needs another stinker like that one?"

Hey Todd I have Eternal Darkness if you want to borrow it. I bought it cuz someone told me it'd scare the shit out of me. I haven't played it long enough to find out.

Rad Racer 100% didn't work in 3d. Just made it look like mud. Jim Power--The Lost Dimension in 3D on the SNES though--that 3d worked, and looked pretty cool. I loved that game. Insanely hard, but very fun.

Donald Duck's Quackshot and Maui Mallard were two of the best Disney games ever made.

I still remember flying the carpet in Aladdin... it was good, but Lion King was much more fun.

Eternal Darkness was a lot of fun

Skate 2 has a code you can put in to make it 3D.. It doesn't really add anything to the game though & ends up being an eye strain

Posted By: Byzdalmyt (Guest)  on November 03, 2009 at 03:57 PM

Aladdin was good, but I agree that Lion King was better.

What's crazy is that both of those games were released on the NES in the UK, and they weren't near as good as the SNES and Genesis versions. Course.. soon after, there were pirated versions, where the pirates had ported over the SNES and Genesis versions to the NES/Famicom without much difference at all (mostly just some color loss). Crazy what kinda games have been ported over to an 8 bit system. Donkey Kong 64 and Mortal Kombat come to mind..

But yeah.. those two are quite possibly the best movie based games ever released. You'd be hard pressed to find many games based on Disney characters that aren't great games though, especially in the NES/Capcom era..
