The 10th Hour 11.06.09: Arcade Games
Posted by Adam Larck on 11.06.2009

Welcome back to another week of the 10th Hour. I'll be taking the helm for the next few weeks, so I'll start off with my usual update.

- It's been difficult finding a copy of Borderlands here, but I finally got a rental copy of it. It's a great multiplayer game, but single player seems to be lacking a bit. I love the variety of guns and the different classes in the game. Look for a review up on it within a week.

Reader Feedback

I know it's been a while, but my last column was on Top Mario games. Let's look at a few comments, shall we.

First up is Ryan Bates, with my lack of a certain series.

"I would swap #2 and #3, but that's just me. I love SMBRPG and wish I could find a copy of it, since I had to give my copy back to my friend who I borrowed it from.

Meanwhile... I cannot believe you left out ALL OF THE MARIO Party games!!! They were innovative and fun, even without alcohol! (Line up the shots though, and boy howdy!) I look forward to each new edition and the mini-games that come out every time. No Mario Party games? Adam Larck is NOT the Superstar."

I'll admit, I overlooked the Mario Party games. However, even if I hadn't done so, I think they still would have come in low on the list. The first few were fun, but after that I just felt that the series had become repetitive. Even the new Wii version felt like much of the same to me, just with a bit of waggle now.

Next, we have Deathpool with a comment I think is quite true about this list.

" All the games others are mentioning are good as well, but that's kind of the point, there are A LOT of good to great games starring Mario. A metric ton. A top ten is hard to do. I personally liked Paper Mario: 1000 Year Door more than Super Paper Mario, but I don't fault anyone for putting it higher, both were good. You could do a top 25 of nothing but good Mario games."

I definitely agree with this statement. I went through three or four revisions on this list trying to come up with my top 10. I probably could have tried to do a top 20 and still have gone through the revisions trying to cut the number of games down.

Finally, we have Will with his list. What would he have put on the top 10?

" Havent played them all but my favs are

Mario RPG snes
Mario 3
Mario World 2 Yoshi Island
Mario Superstar Saga GBA,,,Mario 64
Mario Golf 64
Mario 2
Mario Party 2 64
Paper Mario thousand door
Mario Kart snes"

Thanks for the list. Remember, I always like to see your top 10 list, so keep them coming.

The 10th Hour – Arcade Games

A few weeks back I did a review on the Pinball Hall of Fame for the 360. That got me remembering all the fun times I had at arcades. Whether it was just trying for a high score or playing against other people, the arcades were a fun part of my gaming life and something I've missed as they've started to disappear.

So, this week's 10th Hour is all about the arcade. From light-gun games to pinball tables to retro games, read on to find out what made my list and why. I also want to add honorable mentions of the X-Men and Simpsons arcade games. Those beat ‘em up games were good, and may spawn a 10th Hour of their own in the future.

10. House of the Dead 2 - I like most of the HOTD series, but 2 is the main one I like at the arcades.

I've always been a fan of light-gun games, as seen by the multiple light-gun games on my list. However, HOTD has one thing these other games don't: zombies. Being able to kill the undead in the arcade with a friend is a fun experience. I just wish some of my local arcades had this game when they were still around. I could only find this game at Dave & Busters.

9. Ghost Squad - The newest game on my list, I've started seeing a lot of these machines pop up lately at Buffalo Wild Wings.

I like the option of choosing your own equipment in an arcade game. Not only that, but there is a distinct feel for each gun and the firing modes they have. It's just a great touch. As far as gameplay goes, it's average. But, it's still fun to play in arcades.

8. Cruis'n Exotica - I like all of the Cruis'n series, but wanted to put Exotica on here for it's broad variety of areas.

Racing through various places on the world, and even Mars, was cool to see. The cars were great in the game, and it was always fun to have the car flip and wheelie during the race. Plus, being able to keep track of your own records in the game using a PIN really helped when it came to high score bragging rights.

7. The Grid - I've only seen this game at one location in St. Louis years ago, but still remember the fun I had with it.

The game was reminiscent of Smash TV. It was supposed to be a show where you had to destroy everyone to advance. However, the fun came in when you had a lot of friends to play against. The Grid I played on had three different cabinets and chaos normally ensued once you saw Sub-Zero and Scorpion running around with guns trying to take you out.

6. Soul Calibur 2 - The Soul still burns with me. I like the console versions of the game as well, but have fond memories of this at the arcade.

I always like buying fighting games for consoles, but it can't replace the fun of playing against someone face to face on a cabinet. I had a blast with Nightmare, and this was also my introduction to Raphel in the game. Taking a close sudden death game was always a great feeling.

5. Pin-Bot - I wanted to put at least one pinball table on here, and thought my favorite table should be included.

Don't get me wrong, I like Black Knight as well, but I've always loved playing Pin-Bot. The bumpers are set up out of the way and makes you feel rewarded if you hit them (even if they can launch the ball right out of the game. But, the big thing for me was seeing Pin-Bot come alive and let you activate multiball. Great memories.

4. Galaga - You knew that some retro games had to be on this list at some point. Well, the first of the two games here is Galaga.

It's a simple game, yet I've always had fun playing it. Just destroying waves of aliens with your ship trying to stay the longest was great. Plus, this game let you control two of your ships at once by rescuing it, which was cool.

3. Pac-Man - The other retro game on the list, it just wouldn't have been a complete list without Pac-Man.

Few games can actually be simpler then Pac-Man. Gobble pellets and avoid ghosts, that's pretty much all you have to do. There really isn't much else to say about this game. I never have made it to the killscreen (I never had that much time to kill), but have seen images of it. For those of you that have made it, I say congrats.

2. Time Crisis 2 - I have a ton of memories playing this game with my friends.

I always loved the hiding mechanism they had in this game and using the foot pedal to come out to shoot. While I didn't mind playing this game by myself, it was the Link Mode that made it fun. Whether it was random strangers or friends, trying to coordinate which enemies to go for always made for some interesting on the fly strategies. Only my No. 1 choice has more fond memories.

1. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - If you've read my previous columns, you know how much of a fan I am of MvC 2. So, is it any surprise it's at the top of my list?

The number of characters in the game made for some great match-ups with people. Plus, getting a Hyper Combo finish against someone always let me have some self-satisfaction after a match. However, MvC 2 also gave me one of my most annoying arcade moments. I don't care who you are; challenging when someone is one hit away from beating the final boss without asking is low.

Well, that's all I have for this week. Like or hate what I said? Shoot me an email at adamant_l_87@yahoo.com or leave a comment below. Any feedback is appreciated.

Pinball isnt an arcade game. Save that for a top 10 pinball game list. How Simpsons and X-men (and Avengers) dont make this list is rediculous. Other games that should be on here: Sonic Blast Man, Revolution X, Street Fighter 2

C'mon! Hydro Thunder is where it's at!!
And the Star Wars Trilogy Arcade game is extremely solid! However, you can't argue the classics, but those would have been nice to see...

This list makes me a sad panda, you left off some of the best Arcade games of all time. My list

10. Crisis Zone - An awesome controller and a fast-paced shooter makes this one of my faves.

9. Star Wars - I can't remember the actual name, you sat in a cockpit and had a joystick you used to control planes and a somewhat awkward (but fun) lightsaber fights.

8. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - A fun button-masher when your playing with someone who's not great at fighting games. Easy to pick up, but plenty of depth and lots of characters to fool around with.

7. Jurrasic Park: The Lost World - An awesome light gun game that had no right being as good as it was, considering the license. You shoot T-Rex's in the face while driving a jeep.

6. Galaga - My only retro game. Never liked Pacman or Caterpiller or any of those, but Galaga ruled.

5. Time Crisis 2 - For all the reasons you listed, co-op play was a blast.

4. Hydro Thunder - Not a huge fan of racing games, but Hydro Thunder was great. One of the few games that made you actually think you were going fast when you got going. Great tracks, fun "water" environment made it different from other racing games.

3. Tekken 3/Tekken Tag Tournament - Me and my friends have always been Tekken fans, and these are the finest games in the series.

2. Gauntlet Legends - Nothing beats fighting side by side with two or three of your friends (or 4, but you better be good friends with them, because it gets crowded), kicking ass and taking names, fighting over food and powerups and yelling "Blue Warrior Needs Food Badly!" at every chance.

1. Dance Dance Revolution - You either get it or you don't. Since you didn't have DDR on your list at all, I'm guessing you don't. But I spent more money, and met more people playing DDR then all my other games combined.

I am a person that only ever went to arcades when on holiday or days out because there were never any near me. I always had games at home so i never missed out but there was something different about going and playing on an arcade machine.

10: Time Crisis 1 (on one holiday i must have spent so much money on this and it never stopped being fun).

9: Dance Dance Revolution (I can't play it to save my life but its always funny to have a go with my mates when I am pissed).

8: X Men (my local movie theatre had this game and it was alway a good way to kill 20 mins before the film started. Gameplay was simple fast and fun and great with a few mates).

7: Mortal Kombat 2 (the first one was good but this just blew me away. I had the first one on the mega drive and played it on holiday a few times and it was always fun to play against other people. I went on holiday one time and saw Mortal Kombat 2 and had to play it and must have spent all day either watching or playing it. I suck at fighting games but this was the only game I was good at).

6: Crusin USA (I dont really like arcade racing games because they all seem the same but this was fun).

5: TMNT (What 8 year old didn't love the turtles. Nothing to say but amazing).

4: Star Wars Trilogy (Great game and adictive as hell).

3: House of the dead 2 (Shooting zombies with a gun rather then a control pad was so much fun. Loved the fast gameplay and it was different to the other light gun games).

2: Die Hard Arcade (Spent a whole weekend one this whenever I could. Was just so much fun and I had to finish it with my friend. The weapons were cool with the rocket laucher that made you fly back when you shot it and how did you counter an enemy attack by kicking him in the nuts awesome. It was tough to not put this at no 1 but nothing can beat.

1: The Simpsons (Nothing caught my attention as much as this did on a holiday to florida. Everytime you wanted me back at the hotel I was on the simpsons arcade game. It was just so much fun and the gameplay was gold. I was in heaven with this game and almost finished it one time during the 2 weeks. I can't praise this game enough just makes me mad that it has yet to be released on the XBOX Live Arcade because I would buy it in a shot.

can't believe that none of the classic arcade beat'm'ups made the list. My list would go,

10. Jurassic Park
9. King of Fighters '97
8. Street Fighter 2
7. Mortal Kombat 3
6. X-men (once again don't remember exact tile, the beat'm'up)
5. Marvel vs Capcom
4. Tekken Tag Tournament
3. Simpsons Arcade Game
2. House of the Dead 2
1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

NBA JAM, NFL Blitz, Jurrasic Park The Lost World Arcade was pretty bad-ass. The Simpsons, Time Killers, Killer Instinct, MKII? Gorf? Man the arcades were so awesome. Great column Adam.

Also "Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat, WWF WrestleFest, WWF Superstars, Street Fighter II Championship Edition, Gauntlet, Punch-Out!!, Tugboat(lol)

You will never please everyone, however this list totally sucks for anyone born before 1986.

Simpsons would be my number 1 game. After that, in no particular order, MvC2, a Cruis'n game, Time Crisis and RC Pro Am.

Not a bad list, though.

Posted By: G-Walla (Guest)  on November 06, 2009 at 11:56 AM

What was the motorcycle game where you actually got to ride on a mock bike? That was pretty bad ass. And MKII absolutely dominates the rest, for me. Soooo much time and money wasted. Then of course the already mentioned beat-em-ups. Never played Street Fighter in the arcade, only at home.

Your list dumbfounded me.

Posted By: The REAL MP (Guest)  on November 06, 2009 at 12:08 PM

Like Tony Dorian above, rare was the time I got to play at a cabinet (and I still feel more comfortable with my eight way D-Pad than a joystick) but I have had some fun. In fact just the other day I got to play KOF 99 I believe at the laundromat down the street from me.

Off the top of my head, the games I do recall enjoying were,

TMNT Turltes in Time: 4 turtles kicking the crap out of foot soldiers and hurling mutha fuckas into the screen? How can you not like that?

Die Hard Arcade: No clue what it had to do with Die Hard, but it was a fun beat em up and I miss those. Why haven't we had a Streets of Rage 4 by now?

Soul Caliber 2: First and only Calibur I played on a cabinet and had a blast.

Marvel vs Capcom 2: Again, can't go wrong with a good face-to-face fight game experience. Especially if you rack up a half dozen wins on 1 quarter/token.

I agree this list is somewhat a huge letdown..some of these games are just too new to hold any relevance.

Where is X-Men? Double Dragon? Donkey Kong? DDR?(I hated it but I can't possibly deny how HUGE of a game it is). etc etc

yeah me too man. when the one here in atlanta closed this time last year I was severly dissapointed.

anyways nobody mentioned any of the Metal Slug games? those were probably one of the few games where I would spend all my money to get to the end

I disagree. I was born in 1979 and I enjoyed his list. I may not agree with all of it, but it was still a fun read. You got to remember, someone on this site listing their favorites isn't done to slight anybody. It's done to get people thinking about what their favorites were. List all your games from before 1986 that you loved man, get in on the conversation.

Posted By: Todd Vote (Registered)  on November 06, 2009 at 01:59 PM

You got to fight the boss in MvC2?
You must live in the boonies then because all the arcades in the St. Louis area were always full of MvC2 players; I don't even think I've seen a lone MvC2 player at the arcades, ever.

Besides that, who cares; Abyss was a ridiculously easy boss. It's not like they brought Mech Gouki back...I remember utterly destroying him on the Saturn import but in the arcades, I couldn't beat him the few times I got to play him.

Posted By: Nick (Guest)  on November 06, 2009 at 04:09 PM

I think the Simpsons should have actually made it on the list. (I was always Marge. Don't judge. That vacuum had some good reach on it.)

And I'm a little concerned that neither Donkey Kong nor the original Mario Bros. made it in.

Posted By: Ryan Bates (Guest)  on November 06, 2009 at 06:10 PM

Okay, here we go.

10) Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game
9) Darius Gaiden
8) GigaWing
7) Rage of the Dragons
6) Metal Slug X
5) Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
4) Gauntlet: Dark Legacy
3) Marvel vs. Capcom 2
2) Alien vs. Predator (Capcom)
1) Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara

I still hold the honor of being the first player with all 16 characters at level 99 in GDL at the local arcade. I'm also the only one I know who's beaten D&D:SoM on one credit. Cleric FTW!

A top 10 list should weigh historical significance and impact along with fun. Carnevil is my favorite gun game, but I'd never put it on a top ten arcade list.

1. Pac-Man - Started the arcade craze and still holds up.

2. Donkey Kong - Brought character and storyline to video games.

3. Pong - The first arcade hit. It isn't as fun as the first two, but you can't ignore the impact.

4. Dragon's Lair - The first Laserdisk game and revolutionary dispite not being the most interactive game.

5&6 (Tie) Mortal Kombat II/Street Fighter II - Brought the arcade back from the dead in the 90's. MKII brought main stream controversy, but SFII was the more in depth game.

7. Dance Dance Revolution - Brought arcades back in the 2000's and kicked off the music genre of games that continues with Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

8. Double Dragon - Dominated arcades in the late 80's. Introduced concepts like being able to disarm opponents and use their weapons that continue to this day.

9. TMNT - There were previous games that supported more than two players (the original Gauntlet), but this brought it all together with a hot franchise and fun gameplay.

10. Pole Position - Granddaddy of the driving game.

Wow, i've seen some pretty bad Top 10 lists from you in the past, but this one takes the cake. Hell, one could make a better Top 10 out of games that you DIDN'T include (in no particular order):

10. Donkey Kong
9. The Simpsons
8. X-Men
7. TMNT
6. Street Fighter 2
5. Mortal Kombat II
4. Space Invaders
3. Tekken 3
2. DDR (pick one)
1. Star Wars Trilogy

With all these great games, you instead choose games like The Grid, something that you've admitted to only playing ONCE?? I don't get it, and i'm not trying to flame, but do you just not have much experience w/ arcade games?

...no Street Fighter II... my mind has been blown, but in a good way. :) Still, awesome list.
For me...
Honorable mentions: Space Invaders, DIG DUG, Golden Axe
10. Metal Slug 2
9. Ninja Gaiden
8. DDR
7. Virtua Cop
6. Snow Brothers
5. TMNT2
4. Final Fight
3. Pacman
2. Street Fighter 2
1. Mortal KOMBAT 2

I don't play video games any more, but I'd kill to have an arcade room with these beasts in it...

10. Mortal Kombat 2
9. Galaga
8. Area 51 (I don't see this on anyone's list.. Was anyone else as addicted to this as I was?)
7. TMNT (LOVED these games where you could pick your character, jump right in the middle of the action, and help muthafuckas out.)
6. The Simpsons (I've seen maybe 3 episodes of the show, but this game was fun as hell.)
5. Nintendo PlayChoice 10 (This might be cheating a little, but come on, this was awesome!)
4. NBA Jam
3. WWF Wrestlefest
2. X-Men
1. House of the Dead 2 (The most exciting game I've ever played in an arcade, even if we rarely made it past the 2nd stage!)
