411 Games Fact or Fiction 11.16.09: New Super Mario Bros. Sales, God of War, Guitar Hero 3, More
Posted by Adam Larck on 11.16.2009
Can New Super Mario Bros. Wii outsell Modern Warfare 2? Will you buy the God of War Collection? Was Guitar Hero 3 the best in the series? 411’s Ramon Aranda and Adam Larck take on these questions and more in this week’s 411 Fact or Fiction: Games!
Welcome back to another week of Fact or Fiction. Ramon was out this weekend covering the Pacquiao vs. Cotto match (check out his recap here and this week's column detailing the weekend here), but is still helping out with one side this week. I'll be taking the other.
Anyways, let's get to it!
1: New Super Mario Bros. Wii can outsell MW2.
Adam Larck: Fiction - I really think MW 2 has too much of a strong hold on the sales to be upset by New Super Mario Bros. I mean, MW 2 sold around 5 million copies on the first day alone, and is still currently racking up sales. I think NSMBW will do well for the Wii, but won't pull the numbers that MW 2 has. There was just too much hype and anticipation for MW 2 to increase the sales that Mario just hasn't seemed to generate.
Ramon Aranda: Fiction - I agree with Adam that the hype was over the top and the game is doing ridiculous sales numbers. As good as I expect NSMBW to be, I don't see it doing that well. Plus MW2 kicks major ass.
Score: 1 for 1
2: The toughest Ganon to beat is the one from Ocarina of Time.
Adam Larck: Fact - From what I remember I ran into quite a bit of difficulty with this one until I finally figured a pattern out. Until his pattern of attacks finally clicked in my head of where and how to dodge, I was trying to take his attacks head on and just strafe around him. Wasn't my best idea. Overall, though, I think the challenge that Ganon offered in OoT hasn't been matched by another Zelda.
Ramon Aranda: Fact - OoT Ganon is no joke and although I used to have problems with the first game, it doesn't compare with Ganon/Ganondorf. I figured him out too finally but for that first experience...he was tough!
Score: 2 for 2
3: You will buy the God of War Collection.
Adam Larck: Fact - I am doing this question with the assumption that I will have a PS3 by the end of the year. I was a big fan of GoW when the games first came out on the PS2, and a version of the game with updated graphics still seems like a lot of fun. Plus, I like the idea of being able to collect trophies for the games as well.
Ramon Aranda: Fact I never did play the GoW games originally but they did look pretty gnarly. Now that my fiancée has a PS3 I feel the need to go play them. The enhanced graphics will be a nice touch and they were some of the few games that tempted me to get a ps2 ...I'll be picking the collection up on day 1 for sure. I hear I missed out with the originals so I won't again.
Score: 3 for 3
SWITCH
4: Your favorite Guitar Hero was GH3.
Ramon Aranda: Fact - Sure the first one was a great surprise but to me, nothing beats the soundtrack of #3. All those classic rock tracks are bad ass by themselves but rocking out to them was kick ass ...to me there's no better soundtrack period.
Adam Larck: Fact - I agree with Ramon here. I actually didn't play the first one until after I had played the third one (didn't get into the games till after GH2 hit the Xbox 360). Even after playing all of the rest, I still think the third had the best soundtrack out of the series. Even the bonus tracks were great to play. For Guitar Hero fans, GH3 is where it's at.
Score: 4 for 4
5: You would choose Battlefield 3 (if and when released) on the PC over a possible console version.
Ramon Aranda: Fact - Maybe it's because I have a soft spot for the BF2 which I worked on at EA along with the Special Forces expansion, but it just feels right on the PC. I have enjoyed the other console versions, but the gameplay is unmatched.
Adam Larck: Fiction - I'll be honest and admit that I'm not a big PC gamer. I like to play MMORPGs on it, but never have been able to get into shooters. If it ever does get released, I wouldn't mind checking it out on one of the consoles, but I'll leave the PC version to Ramon.
Score: 4 for 5 Finally! A disagreement.
6: Those Top-20 arcade machines (they had 20 Nintendo games to choose from) were awesome.
Ramon Aranda: Fiction - Yes they were kinda cool in that you had a bunch of games to choose from on one cabinet but you also had a time limit and that my friends, sucked balls. Also the game library wasn't always that great and more often than not they were dirty as shit. Damn Cheetos-fingered children!
Adam Larck: Fiction - When I've seen these machines they always featured one or two decent titles then all the rest were obscure or mediocre. The decent titles that were on there I normally owned at home, so I never could justify playing these games at an arcade. Plus, like Ramon said, the time limit that was installed on these to keep taking away quarters was complete BS. If we're good enough to keep playing, then let us play!
Final Score: 5 for 6
We finish off the week with a bit of disagreement, but an overall friendly 5 for 6 on the topics. Now it's your turn to give us your thoughts. Fact or Fiction? Let us know!
Mario will outsell MW2. I know all the nintendo haters cannot admit it. Go to Amazon.com and see what video game is #1. Look at the 20+ years of branding Mario has. Think of all the casual and hardcore gamers that will pick it up.
I know the online narrative is that Nintendo sucks, is kiddie stuff, is ruining gaming, blahblahblah...but Mario will win at year's end. Deal with it.

You act like people are going to start crying if MW2 gets outsold, I seriously doubt anyone cares that much outside of Nintendo and Activision themselves.
MW2 will sell more right out of the gate, with the added advantage of being on both the PS3 and 360 as well as the PC. Mario will sell more in the long run because Mario games are typically evergreen titles that don't get the majority of their sales right away.

Considering that Mario Kart Wii was in the top 10 for a year or something, I could definitely see NSMBWii outselling MW2 eventually.

1. New Super Mario Brothers Wii WILL outsell Modern Warfare 2. It's Mario and it can't be outdone.
2. Gannon is easy as heck once you get his pattern down to science, which I've done as a speedrunner. I don't even remember what it was like the first time I fought him, but I think it may of been quite difficult.
4. Just to get it out there, I prefer GH II, but I would agree that GH III had some awesome tracks, but a different playstyle. In all Music games, Rock Band 2 is the superior game due to the DLC and me having over 150 DLC. (Over 200 imported tracks total, counting Rock Band 1) And the on-disc track list ain't half bad either.
But yes, New Super Mario Brothers Wii will outsell MW2, due to it simply being Mario. New Super Mario Bros on the DS has sold over 19 million all-together, with sales still going strong. So it may not beat MW2 this holiday season, but in overall lifetime sales it will.

Sorry, you guys are totally wrong. NSMBWii is going to EASILY outsell MW2. Why? The first NSMB is sitting at 19.69 million sales in and of itself. What chance does MW2 possibly have? NSMB was on the top 15 sales charts for THREE AND A HALF YEARS. Will MW2 be in the top 15 for three and a half years? Nope. Beyond Christmas, it'll drop off quickly. Never underestimate Mario.

Owning a Nintendo Entertainment System without Mario leaves you feeling empty. Nearly everyone who owns a wii will end up with Mario in the long run. In 6 months there will be yet another better shooting game while Mario gets a category of his own.

when that nintendo guy mentioned that new mario will outsell MW2 he knew exactly what he was doing. he would get people talking about the game. he would get people interested to try it.

I think you are talking about Play Choice-10?

"Those Top-20 arcade machines (they had 20 Nintendo games to choose from) were awesome."
I think you mean, PlayChoice-10 machines.
God I'm getting old.

...You really think TOOT Ganon is the hardest?
Wow, I thought the whole 'roll under feet, hit tail with hammer, repeat' made him one of the easiest. I think I had more trouble with TWW Ganon than him.
But that's just my opinion. :D

GH 3 is miles better than GH 2 as the cover versions on GH 2 suck. The RATM cover is terrible !
The GH2 tracks on Smash Hits are awesome but overall the soundtrack of GH3 is amazing - My Curse for starters ! And Welcome to the Jungle !

I dont know which of those two games will sell more but I do think Mario will outsell MW2 on either systems just mabye not on both combined. Uncle Creepy out!

Guitar Hero 2 > Guitar Hero 3
Reason?
Harmonix >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>*looks at fake watch*>>>>>>>>>>>>> Neversoft
Harmonix actually puts notes to actual sound. Neversoft is know for putting in phantom notes. Also, the covers on GH2 weren't THAT bad. They weren't the best, but they were comparable across to the source material.

I was pleased as punch when I saw those Top 20 arcade machines from Nintendo. Thought they were awesome. Until my first quarter ended due to a time limit???
What the hell?
Ruined it for me.

Yeah, that time limit stuff sounds like bullshit.

I think the only way the new Mario Bros will outsell MW2 is if it comes with a happy ending.
Man, Tekken has been around forever.

being a rage fan i agree but GH2 had Hangar 18 by Megadeth and also Instituitonalized by Suicdal Tendencies. Those rght there make it the best.

Mario will definitely outsell MW2 in the long run. Maybe if you combine all the sales MW2 has from all 3 platforms, yes but Mario on a single platform will outsell MW2 on a single platform.
Mario has become an icon. Call of duty doesn't have any icons to really make it viable in the long term.

GH3 may have mostly genuine versions of songs (which is good), but Harmonix knew how to create decent notecharts that fit the music (which is important for a RHYTHM game). Look at the laughably inferior notechart that GH: Greatest Hits had for Freebird compared to GH2.
Oh, and GH2 had the awesomeness of TROGDOR :) . Now THAT needs to be DLC for any music game with a microphone. Jordan and Thunderhorse also rank ahead of the bonus stuff in GH3.
