Leveled Up 11.25.09: Remember, No Russian
Posted by Joshua Richey on 11.25.2009

[WARNING: The following article is about Modern Warfare 2 and contains spoilers]

The airport level - known officially as 'No Russian' - is unlike any level in a video game that you've ever played. It's not fun, yet it's not supposed to be. Personally, I'd go as far as to say that I hated it. So in this edition of Leveled Up, I'm going to state my case against it and why I think Modern Warfare 2 would have been better without it.

I'll go ahead and say it now: I'm not as high on Modern Warfare 2 as most of my peers seem to be. Aside from a fantastic multiplayer experience, I felt that the game was a big letdown from Call of Duty 4 in nearly every way. It was like watching a 6-7 hour Michael Bay film. Hell, even a number of the games plot twists and set pieces seemed to have been lifted straight out of Michael Bay's The Rock - which, if you're going to borrow ideas from a Bay film, that's probably the one to borrow from.

Anyway, Modern Warfare 2 includes a level that has got everyone talking. If you've been living in a cave for the last month or so and haven't heard about it, allow me to fill you in. (Or just watch the clip below)

During this level, (which is the 2nd or 3rd level in the game) you play an American that's gone undercover and infiltrated a Russian terrorist's inner circle. His name is Vladimir Makarov. Now as the level begins you'll find yourself standing in an elevator alongside Makarov and a few of his men. Things are quiet as you and the other men load your weapons and adjust your bulletproof vests. Just prior to the elevator doors opening, Vladimir turns to you and says, "Remember, no Russian". As this is going on, you still have no idea what's about to transpire. The doors open and you notice that you're inside of a giant airport that is littered with hundreds of people. You walk off the elevator with your comrades, all of the people turn and look at you, and then it happens, Makarov demands that you open fire.

For the next 5 minutes or so, you're walking through an airport and just mowing down anyone that moves. Now I'll be fair. I don't recall there being any children, you can pass through most of the level without shooting a soul (though you then have to watch your Russian counterparts massacre everyone instead), and the game does tell you just prior to the start of the level, "Hey, you're about to see some fucked up shit. Do you want to skip the level with no penalty?" (Paraphrasing, of course) But honestly, who's going to see a message like that and elect to skip it?

My first time playing it, I had no idea what to think. I didn't enjoy it, I know that. I actually didn't even let off one shot until the game forces you to. I just sat there in disbelief. Usually I'm all for video games pushing the envelope. I've been saying for a long time that video games shouldn't be treated any differently then movies or music. I've defended games like Grand Theft Auto and Manhunt when their critics tried to have them banned. But I don't know. This just felt like too much. I remember thinking at the time that the level was designed to make you hate Makarov even more;. but as the games storyline unfolded, I began to see that wasn't the case at all.

I feel that the level is completely unnecessary. I think that it's only included for its shock value. It's something that we would expect from Rockstar, but Infinity Ward? No. They don't need to create controversy and be the talk of cable news channels to sell their game. This game would have sold a bajillion copies whether this level was featured in the game or not. My issue with the level isn't that you're going around and killing innocent people (NPC's). There are several games that feature that. So believe me, it's not a morality issue. It's just the cheapness of it. It feels cheap and forced. If video games have a hard time being taken seriously, it's because of games like this.

Now I know my opinions disagree with many of yours. I've talked to friends and my co-writers about the level. Their opinions were quite different. Most of them didn't think that the level impacted them at all. With me, it was in the back of my mind for the rest of the game. As I'm running around the White House killing Russians, all I could think about was how ridiculous this all was. With most of them, as soon as the level was over, they forgot about it and moved on to the next stage. I don't think neither of those reactions were Infinity Ward's intentions.

Now I've heard just about every excuse that the fanboys are making on Infinity Ward's behalf. So let's address a few of them...

"…but it's included for the sake of the story"

Oh really? The inclusion of a level that has you going around and murdering hundreds of people is essential to the games storyline? I might buy into that a bit more if the games storyline wasn't so shitty. I mean, honestly, let me point out the many plot holes here.

At the end of the No Russian level, Makarov shoots you in the head (he knew you were undercover) and sets it up to look like this massacre was solely on the hands of an American. This then leads to Russia and the United States going to war. Umm…seriously? An American CIA operative shoots up a Russian airport and it creates World War 3? Doubt it. A more likely situation in that case would have been a full out investigation by the U.S. and Russian governments. And in that case, someone on one of the sides would have been smart enough to look at the surveillance tapes from the airport, which would have shown that not only was the American not alone, but that he was alongside a well known terrorist. Perhaps instead of Makarov being concerned about you not using any Russian language, he should have been more concerned with masking his identity with…I don't know, a mask?

So, no, this level isn't included because it goes along with the storyline. Like I said, the games story is weak as hell, and most of it is told during loading screens anyway. And if the scene is so "crucial", why are you given the option to skip it? Wouldn't that ruin the game?

…they took a risk and should be applauded.

So we should applaud them for taking a risk? Is that right? Hey Activision, you reading this? In your next Spiderman game, why don't you have Venom or one of the other villains set a family of puppies on fire. Yeah, what the hell, go for it. I mean, according to these people, it doesn't matter that the act has nothing to do with the game. All they want is risks and shock value. Push that envelope for the sake of doing so. So, yeah, burn those puppies; and while you're at it, drown some kittens too.

See how ridiculous that sounds? Modern Warfare 2 is no different. Just instead of killing animals, they decided that it would help their cause to include a level that had you taking on the part of a terrorist.

And the worst part of all this is that the next time some fucking psycho goes into his workplace or school and starts shooting it up, you know damn well that jackasses like Jack Thompson are going to get hard on's at the thought of being able to place blame for it on the gaming industry. All Modern Warfare 2 has done is given them that ammo.

Okay, I'm done ranting. I'm going to go smoke a cigarette or something. Everyone have a good Thanksgiving break, and I'll see you back here next week with something a bit more fun. If you find yourself bored over the long weekend and tired of RedTube, you should check out my blog below. It's more fun than shooting up a airport full of innocent people, I promise you that.

Yeah, but it's okay to mow down foreigners from other countries in the name of democracy?

Don't be a hypocrite.

Jay,

How in God's good name is he a hypocrite? I guess you forgot history because shooting "enemy combatants" is considered just by our culture. I would suggest watching Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, etc. All of those are accepted by our society. It only becomes taboo when you take on the point of an enemy and kill innocent civilians.

If you are trying to take the moral high ground, then I would suggest stop playing ALL video games where you kill anything. I guess you're an avid Nintendogs player...

Who cares, it's a game, a form of entertainment. It's nothing different than watching a movie which would hit a similar topic of genocide which is a storyline in the game for that particular level.

Anyone bothered by it needs to get over it.

you've obv never unlocked the secret nintendogs terrorist attack level....

You can, as I did, play that level without shooting a single thing.
It will take a long time when it comes to the police/SWAT however but is doable.
I wanted to play it to see the complete story, I just refused to shoot anybody.

WOW Such sensitive feelings for "innocent" NPC. I take it you've never played Grand Theft Auto and had sniper practice with the NPC.

I was okay with what IW was trying to do here, until the end of the game when Makarov almost becomes an ally to help you find Sheperd. That's when I got a sour taste in my mouth about the "No Russian" level.

But as far as "This then leads to Russia and the United States going to war. Umm…seriously? An American CIA operative shoots up a Russian airport and it creates World War 3? Doubt it. A more likely situation in that case would have been a full out investigation by the U.S. and Russian governments."

you have to remember that WWIII already broke out at the end of COD4 with the nuke and all that. The world is at war already. Do you really think there would have been a full scale investigation if we were already in WWIII? I don't think they would have.

So you have no problem with Manhunt's insanely graphic violence or GTA's rampant sexism, racism, and violence towards/optional outright slaughter of innocents BUT

gunning down people in an airport in the name of terrorism is "too much". Some of you silly Americans with your panties in a bunch. It was 8 years ago, get over it.

I'm of the mind that doesn't see a problem with it morally (there are far more offensive moments in GTA, and games like that), but I think what the writer was going for was that the airport scene just wasn't needed. For one thing, if you are an undercover agent for this group, you really shouldn't be mowing down innocent people. The briefing scene should have been explaining what happened up to the shootout with the cops. Then the next cutscene, the could explain, that forensics determined that none of the undercover agents shell casings were discovered until the area where the shootout with the police occured.

Again, I'm not offended by the scene, but it did seem it wasn't therefore story purposes, just shock value.

I think the level was important. It was important because Americans really do not grasp the severity or emotional consequences of terrorism or the significance of the statements made by such actions. Yes you can play the level without shooting anyone. I played it and did not return fire until I was fired on by the police. But to sit and watch people running and screaming and begging for thier lives only to be cut down in front of you was a very emotionally gripping experience for me. I know they were not real people, but it really hit home and resonated with me that people that butcher innocent people to make a political statement need to be stopped. Everyone out there needs to play this level. Hold the controller in thier hand and either watch or partake in the level. There is a big difference, a HUGE difference, in an innocent bystander getting caught in crossfire, and blowing someone away who is reading a newspaper in a coffee shop to make a political statement. This level may have been included for shock value, but its other purpose is clear, and a purpose achieved based on the author's op-ed piece. Let it disgust you. Let it bother you. Let it disturb you. Then understand that these things are not just a game and they happen in real life. Then ask yourself what can you personally do to make sure they never happen again. Be it by voting, serving, or financial support. I did not enjoy the level, but I am sure glad they put it in the game.

In another colomn on here someone wrote about this level and it went something like this. "I'm not gonna go out and do anything i see in this game. And kids that might be influenced by the game are below 17 and shouldn't be playing. Should Activision be blamed for bad parenting?" and i agree, I don't see how this is any different from GTA, You can sit on a roof and snipe for hours in GTA, those people are innocent by standers. This level was put in for that HOLY S*** reaction, and i know me and all my friends have said it. No maybe it's not for the sake of the story, but they could have taken anything out if they wanted. And you know what they did take a risk, it's not like it's the only amazing moment in the campaign.

call the feds on me if you want.. but iw as sad that i never got a chance to kill any of the people (except the cops). the only reason i did not like the level is because i felt like a 3rd wheel.

the level however did leave me feeling cold and heartless. its relevant to the story because you need to know why the russian invasion happens and why they blame america. a cutscene would have just been pointless. it'll be like reading chapter 3 in a harry potter book, saying "i'm bored, lets jump forward to 23" and you'd be like.. fuck that was quick.

it's called story telling. if you dont like grim stories maybe an 18 rated game is not for you. i recommend you play littlebigplanet more.

I felt that whole level could have been glossed over a little. A intense cut scene would have had the same effectiveness.

I had a fucking blast, man. This type of murder simulator is what I need to get my insane on.

I'm glad they added this level. It really expands video games and shows how it truly is art. There are SOOOO many questions/thoughts that this level prompted: If this happens in books and movies, why are people mad? Wow, video games really do prompt a more visceral reaction than books never could. They could of made this more political. They should have flipped the story line and made the Americans the ones who mascaraed the people and the Russians the heroes--no people wouldn't buy the game because of inherent bias. What is it that makes mascaraing civilians so bad and killing Russian soldiers acceptable? Do we really believe that the Russian soldiers in this game are inherently evil?

Oh yeah, including this level was important for the advancement of video games as a medium. The only thing the publisher has to worry about is what effect it could have on impressionable youth. Screw what narrow-minded politicians think. Showing main characters dying shows the horror of war. I think if the developers really took a risk, read a bit of literature/philosophy they could of kept levels like this in the game, redefine the medium of video games, and make a work of art. Show the death, show the horror--don't just describe it like Conrad did ("chopping off of the arms of inoculated children")--but let the player come to the conclusion that war is absolutely horrible, and killing really is the worst thing that someone could ever do.

Whether you need a level like this to show this isn't clear, but what is clear is that there is CERTAINLY a situation under which this level would be necessary for the vision of the developers. This level certainly isn't per se unacceptable, only unacceptable to certain people under certain circumstances.

I am glad they included this level, they way they handled it and I hope that when they do it again they think a bit more broad for the possibilities.

I totally agree with "guest's" comments November 25, 2009 at 03:53 PM. For those of you disturbed by the actions you were forced to perform (or at least witness) in this level, then thats great because its exactly the point of the level. And it shows you have some moral fibre which is also a good thing. Did you not listen to the briefing before the level, they said, "it will cost you a piece of yourself." So yes you are SUPPOSED to be affected by what you see. COD has always been about showing the grittyness of war, how badly things can and do go wrong, and how easily a soldier no matter his weapons or training can still be killed.

I think the fact this disturbs you more than GTA and other games where you can and are encouraged to kill civillians shows you are feeling exactly how Activision were hoping people would feel when playing it.

Now I will conceed the plot in this game is far less believable than its predesessor. I also wonder if the developers were trying to put us in the shoes of a country like Iraq, where after a horrible terrorist attack that was not their fault or doing, their country is suddenly over run by the affected country (maybe not quite so unbelievable when you think about it that way).

Personally I think the level was worth having in the game. We cannot avoid the fact that these things do happen in real life, and to infiltrate a terrorist group I'm certain one would need to act against thier morals. It is fundamental to thier story. Had they glossed over it with an explanation in the downloading screens, I'm sure the opposite reaction would have occured with people pissed that not enough of the plot was uncovered during the gameplay.

As if this level isn't fun, I thought it was one of the funnest levels.
