Posted by Ramon Aranda on 01.04.2010
Would you welcome a Legends of WrestleMania sequel? Are you surprised EA hasn't yet mentioned a possible World Cup 2010 title? Will Battlefield Bad Company 2 take away from Modern Warfare 2's popularity when it releases? Would Netflix on the Wii be a bad idea? 411’s Chris Lansdell and Marcos Aranda debate these topics and more in the latest edition of 411 Games Fact or Fiction!
Happy New Year everyone and welcome back to Fact or Fiction. This week, we have Marcos Aranda as well as Chris Lansdell to answer some questions. So let's get right to it folks!
1. You're surprised EA hasn't yet mentioned a possible World Cup 2010 title.
Chris Lansdell: FICTION - Football is a cash cow for EA, especially in Europe. FIFA 10 was huge for them and second only to Modern Warfare 2 for opening week sales in 2009, and the World Cup has traditionally seen EA Sports cash in with yet another title. However, they have historically not been as good as the main titles, and with the tightness of the economy and the fact that the games are often met with a low "ANOTHER FIFA game?" rumbling, it's possible they will just release DLC or something to bring the World Cup to consoles. It's more economical on EA to do that than release a whole new game, and will likely save them some backlash while increasing the life of the über-popular FIFA 10.
Marcos Aranda: FACT - Yeah seriously! I've enjoyed all the previous editions and with the World Cup only a few months away now, I'm surprised EA hasn't started their big marketing swing for the game. Of course we haven't seen a lot of advertisements for the tournament just yet so perhaps EA is waiting for that before they jump in but still...it's 2010 so time to get the word out assuming we'll see the game.
Score: 0 for 1
2. You'd like to see more game shows ala '1 vs. 100' on Xbox Live.
Chris Lansdell: FACT - Absolutely. My gaming time is short so I have yet to try 1 vs 100, but I understand it's a blast. There's a lot of potential for games like this on a social format like XBox Live, and I think something like Big CyberBrother could be a blast. anything that brings people together is a good thing, and if they can start incorporating real prizes, so much the better.
Marcos Aranda: FACT - 1 vs. 100 is really fun to play and there's a handful of other game shows that I'd love to see. Why not throw in some Wheel of Fortune, or Jeopardy? I think players would really enjoy such games especially if there was some real life prices. They wouldn't have to be anything big but maybe some unlockable avatar accessories or Microsoft Points would be sweet.
Score: 1 for 2
3. Battlefield Bad Company 2 will take away from Modern Warfare 2's popularity when it releases.
Chris Lansdell: FACT - I think it has to. I prefer Battlefield to CoD and will be buying BBC2 (not the Brit TV show) when it releases. The original is what got me into FPS games in the first place, with its destructible environments and lack of killcam. The two games have loyal followings and I reckon both will still be heavily played, but some people like both and will be alternating. That almost guarantess a drop for MW2.
Marcos Aranda: FICTION - Not that I don't think BFBC2 won't be any good because I've seen it a few times at a couple of preview events and it looks sweet. I just think that at this point, most gamers are too involved in Modern Warfare 2 that a competitor won't make much of a dent. Perhaps if the game released during the summer instead, it would have a bigger impact.
Score: 1 for 3
SWITCH OUT!

4. A Legends of WrestleMania sequel would be welcomed by you.
Marcos Aranda: FACT - There's a bunch of other wrestlers that didn't make the cut the first time that but honestly it goes beyond that. Hell, THQ could always release wrestlers via DLC but the biggest change I'd want to see in a sequel is a reworking of the controls. Needless to say, they were pretty brutal which made the experience blow at times. The presentation was cool, I dug the graphics and the overall package but the control scheme needs a redux bad.
Chris Lansdell: FICTION - I don't know where else they can go with it. It's not like there are MORE Legends of WrestleMania to add since last year, and releasing a sequel just to improve the engine seems counter-productive. They tried, in conjunction with WrestleMania XXV, to capitalise on the milestone. They failed. Let it go...until WrestleMania 30, of course.
Score: 1 for 4
5. Netflix on the Wii would be a bad idea.
Marcos Aranda: FICTION - I was initially going to say FACT since the Wii cannot handle an HD movie so that would take away one of the coolest features of streaming Netflix. On the other hand, there's still plenty of people who watch their streaming movies in standard mode, either because they aren't watching it on an HDTV or because their internet isn't fast enough to handle HD anyways.
Chris Lansdell: FACT - But only because it lacks the HD possibilities that the 360 and PS3 will bring. Nintendo needs to realise that they have carved out a huge niche with casual gamers, and by and large they won't want to watch movies through their console. It's probably not cost-efficient to explore this, any more than it would be for Sony to release a series of Jonas Brothers games.
Know your audience, folks.
Score: 1 for 5
6. The PS3's motion controller will be more intuitive than Project Natal.
Marcos Aranda: FICTION - This one is hard to answer given that I haven't gone hands-on with the PS3's motion controller while I've gotten a small taste of Natal. From the E3 press conference demo, the PS3's controls looked awkward - or so the guy using it made it look. It may end up being easier to use and more enjoyable but from the tidbits we've seen, I can't say with certainty that this will be the case. Who's to say Natal won't fail?
Chris Lansdell: FICTION - Think back to the last few systems to be released. How many of us looked at the Playstation, N64, XBox and even Game Cube controllers and thought "God that looks horrible, I'll never get used to it?" Project Natal may seem complex and unwieldy, but I think once we get our hands on it, it will be the more natural of the two.
Final Score: 2 for 6 - So maybe we won't be gaming friends but some good points from both sides. And now it's time to hear from you guys....Fact or Fiction? Let us know!
On the last few, Legends of Wrestlemania sequel would be welcomed but only if they reworked the control scheme. That's what made it so lacking.
Netflix on Wii is just useless, Wii needs to focus on finding someway to bring quality third party games to the console. I recently bought a Wii and so far the only thing worth playing is VC and the Nintendo games like Galaxy and Princess.
On the last question, PS3 and Xbox Natal will be about the same. Honestly I wish both would stop the motion control nonsense and just make good games. Going back to the Wii, I've tried out a few third party games who used the motion control as a silly gimmick. The games would have been playable if they didn't feel the need to include crappy motion controls.
And for the record Lansdell, the N64 and Gamecube controls are still horrible. :), they never got bearable, especially N64. I downloaded Smash Brothers for VC, and it was so much better with the classic controller than trying to use the N64 controller back in the day.

"Think back to the last few systems to be released. How many of us looked at the Playstation, N64, XBox and even Game Cube controllers and thought "God that looks horrible, I'll never get used to it?""
I still don't know how to use an N64 controller...

Natal tech. has looked so fake and laggy. The E3 demos were all pre-recorded. PS3 wand tech is actually tangible and so can see it being implemented in existing games such as Resident Evil 5 and new games on the horizon. Ps3 wand is the only motion controller that will actually offer precise 1:1 movement.
Natal will be a flop. PS3 wand was a much better chance of success.

Natal tech. is the same tech behind You're in the Movies. We all know how that turned out. Yikes.

I have to agree with Marcos about BFBC2. If they delayed the release a bit and launched it in the summer they would have a better shot at taking down MW2. I've already lost some interest in MW2, but it is still the most played game on my friends list.

Make a WWE vs. WCW game with No Mercy like control.

Last I checked, Netflix didn't stream in HD anyway. I don't see how adding a feature could possibly be a bad thing for the Wii.

Legends of WrestleMania sucked. You could beat anyonw with the kicks of doom that Punk and Jimmy Wang Yang had. Funny watching people quit that game and complain. Got many hours of fun out of getting hate mail and hear everyone bitch. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

why doesnt thq realize that theyd break every wrestling game sales record if they just made the legends game with the no mercy engine...

Also, Legends was lame. I purposely keep the demo on my 360 hard drive so that any time I start itching to get it due to it being on sale, I can play it & remember why I didn't like it.
I remember holding in my hand again on black Friday for $25 & quickly coming to my senses & setting it back on the shelf.
A sequel would be ok if they just put their own Day of Reckoning 2 engine in it instead of all of that quick time button press crap. Or just make it DLC for the existing SvR 2010 game

Bad Company 2 probably wont make much of a dent in MW2's popularity on Xbox/PS3, but it will do on PC... hell, MW2 is dying by the day on the PC... Infinity Ward & Activision really fucked up the PC version of MW2 - no dedicated servers, no lean, no console, average Xbox 360 graphics, it's practically a console port for the PC - fuck MW2!
