411 Games Top 5 03.11.10: Week 54 - Favorite Final Fantasy Moments

Comment Time with Toddo!

It might've helped us envisage your games a bit more if more than one of you had bothered to
mention what GENRE your games were going to be from.

I can't speak for the rest of the writers, but "For the record my game would be a 3rd person action game, ala God of War, or Darksiders." I did that. :)

Add Egyptian gods to the equation and it would make things even better Todd. Maybe have them create humans together but then disagreeing with each other on who controls them or something. Having an all out three way war of gods would be something cool to see.

I really like your idea. It could make things really interesting.

I thought we call it The Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time

Uh... What?

LISTS

Will apparently not be seen this week as last week we had a whole seven comments. Four of which featured a lovers spat between Salms and the Target Terror Hater of the week. So let's just right into the reason you are here; some RPG love from the Top 5 for a change.

So this is it. This is the week that that one game everybody and their grandmother has been waiting for. You know the one that will "ownz on the PS3, and have 300 disks on M$ RROD Xbox". For those of you living in a cave (shame on you Bin Laden), who may be wondering just what I am talking about, this week marked the release of the highly anticipated Final Fantasy XIII. As I've stated before, I will never let my dislike of RPG's keep me from doing what Chris tells me I have to do giving the people what they want.

So this week, I get to sit one out as the Games staff brings you their favorite Final Fantasy moments. Yes, I am sitting out; it wouldn't be prudent for me to make a list about a game I've never played. So this week the final spot goes to Mr. Stephen Randle, who I hear rumors may be the best Canadian we have on staff, but that hasn't been confirmed. Without any further ado, here is some long overdue Final Fantasy love from the Top 5.

Justin Weinblatt
HONORABLE MENTIONS

Triple Triad and Blitz Ball - FFVIII and FFX each featured a mini game which I enjoyed almost as much as the main quest.

5.Date Night at the Golden Saucer: FF7 - FFVII had a lot of entertaining comic relief moments. The best of these was the Golden Saucer where Cloud could go on a date with either Tifa, Aeris, or Barett and enjoy the Golden Saucer's attractions. Acting in the Golden Saucer's play is one of my favorite gaming moments.

4.Opening Sequence: FFVIII - I enjoyed FFVIII considerably less than Adam above me, but it had some great FMVs. The opening video was epic and had me excited to play the game. Unfortunately that enthusiasm didn't last the whole way through.

3.The Battle for Radiant Garden: Kingdom Hearts 2 - Not technically a Final Fantasy game but it has enough FF characters to make it fair game. One of the world's you'll travel to in Kingdom Hearts is a world inhabited by Final Fantasy characters. When this world comes under attack various Final Fantasy characters unite to defend it. It's a cool scene with a ton of fan service. If you want to see Cloud and Squall fight together, this is the only place to see it.

2.Battling Sin: FFX - Spoilers ahead for FFX. There is nothing I hate more in an RPG than a poor final boss battle. A good final boss fight should be foreshadowed early on in the game and should be intensely personal. Tidus' battle with Jecht meets and exceeds these requirements. Everything in the game led up to this confrontation and the battle did not disappoint. (Yeah I know there were battles after Jecht but this was the real final battle. Those were just part of the epilogue.)

1.Midgar: FF7 - Basically everything from the moment you start the game up until you access the world map. The first five or so hours of Final Fantasy are amazing with strong pacing and great variety. Whether you're blowing up a Shinra facility, saving Aeris from the Turks, or infiltrating a whore house there's never a dull moment. I enjoyed the rest of the game as well but nothing could top those first few hours.

Adam Larck
HONORABLE MENTIONS

Airships/Chocobo - Whether it's the birds or the planes, using these to travel quickly to places for quests were good to save a bit of time.

Summons of any kind - No matter what game in the series, I like to watch the various summons and see how they improve with each iteration.

5.Kefka's new world in Final Fantasy VI - Kefka is the ultimate villain in the series. Not only is he a mentally disturbed clown, he succeeds in destroying the world and making it how he wants it. Seeing the world become completely destroyed, and having to find your friends and save it was a unique experience that set it apart from other games in the series.

4.Collecting all the cards in Final Fantasy VIII - I got into this card game hard. I spent days trying to get a few certain cards, and was thrilled when I finally did. I still played quite a bit after getting everything, but it didn't mean as much to me as when I was trying to get some of the hard to find cards.

3.Seeing Aeris die in Final Fantasy VII - Love it or hate it, this game had quite a few memorable scenes, but none stick out more than this one. Seeing her get stabbed through the back and just falling over was a touching moment in the series. So was the somber moment with Cloud laying her down to rest. It was a great scene that came from a good game.

2.Finding Cloud in Final Fantasy Tactics - This may not be a game from the main series, but it was still a lot of fun. Besides wasting loads of hours mastering jobs and exploring areas on the map, I still remember finding Cloud in this game. While he may start off weak, once you find his Materia Blade he becomes a powerhouse with the Limit Breaks. This was a good hidden character to find that was a good asset to your team.

1.Beating Final Fantasy VIII - My favorite game in the series still has to be Final Fantasy VIII, and I can still distinctly remember the first time I beat it. It was 4 a.m. when I finished a marathon of the game going through the final castle and taking out Ultimecia. After a long battle I get ready to see the final video … just to have the game freeze on me. So, about an hour and a half later I finally get to see the whole thing. As annoyed as I may have been, this was still a great payoff. I've actually been considering getting back into this on the PlayStation 3, but want to wait until I get through Final Fantasy XIII.

Josh Boykin
HONORABLE MENTIONS

HONORABLE MENTIONS
Final Fantasy IV Remake - I thought the remake of Final Fantasy IV for the DS was overkill, but I was wrong. Spectacular graphics, new dialog, and expanded dungeons made this a fantastic game.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance - The first tactic-style title that really garnered my interest. It was light-hearted at the start, and a perfect fit for the GBA. Definitely made me appreciate tactics-style games in the future.

5.You Spoony Bard! - An old codger whipping out his worst (G-rated) vocabulary in Final Fantasy II/IV is an interesting mix of heartbreak and hilarity. On one hand, you have an irritable wizard pulling out a cane and beating a bard over the head. On the other hand, you have a father concerned about the well-being of his daughter, and a love interest trying to be accepted for who he is instead of his lineage. Great moment in FF history.

4.Triple Triad - Pretty sure I spent more time being invested in this RPG's mini-game than the RPG itself. All FF8VIII aside, Triple Triad is a deceptively simple card game that ends up being RIDICULOUSLY addictive. I never went around and got all the cards, but wow, did I get hooked on it. I even started hunting around online for places to play Triple Triad... I tell you, I'd buy a deck of Triple Triad cards in a heartbeat if they sold 'em.

3.Aeris's Death - And this is when gaming transitioned from a way to pass time to something more...I'm not sure what it is about the emotion of how Squaresoft composed the cutscene here, but it's almost perfect. Even playing through it today, while accustomed to modern graphics and soundtrack being what it is, I still feel just as attached to the event as ever. A testament to the power of solid writing.

2.The Buster Sword - Holy Ungodly Huge Sword, Batman! Something about the Buster Sword is just ridiculously iconic. I mean, what guy DOESN'T wish they could wield a sword bigger than they are, fully-equipped with magic-casting materia? When I think of a badass sword, that's the one that comes to mind.

1.Still, I Am Just a Dark Knight -It's funny that a 16-bit text exchange between Cecil and Rosa is one of my strongest gaming memories of all time. Final Fantasy II/IV is my favorite FF hands down because of Cecil's growth and development. The transition from Dark Knight and puppet of the King to wandering, disavowed Dark Knight to Paladin, and all in the name of love and justice. I still find it inspirational. As a kid I looked up to Cecil for the ways he was able to overcome the darkness inside himself and throughout the world; I still look up to those traits today.

Lee Price
HONORABLE MENTIONS

Kingdom Hearts Cameos - I always have fun spotting the Final Fantasy characters in Kingdom Hearts, from the major to the minor showings, I love a good cameo.

5.Bahomet vs Alexander (Final Fantasy IX) - This is probably my favorite cutscene of all time from a game that is chock full of great ones. The Eidolons in Final Fantasy IX were used to perfection I feel, and it was the first game to really give a sense of the sort of power the summon creatures of the Final Fantasy universe are meant to possess. Bahomet was king of these beasts, until it met Alexander.

4.The Ghost Train (Final Fantasy VI) - I'm not sure why but I just really like this section of Final Fantasy VI. I guess it's because its kind of random and unexpected. It makes for a fun departure from the rest of the game and, at least to my knowledge, is never really explained outside of it being the train that provides passage to the underworld. Its just a cool and quirky segment.

3.The Wedding Crashers (Final Fantasy X) - Another cutscene, which should come as no surprise really considering the plot heavy nature of the Final Fantasy series. Tidus and company's physics defying cable grind from the airship to the ground is spectacular, as is Yuna's eventual escape from the clutches of Seymour. I just love this scene.

2.Triple Triad (Final Fantasy VIII) - Not really a moment but more of a side-quest. It just happens to be a side-quest that can eat up as many hours of my play time as the game itself whenever I load up Final Fantasy VIII. Triple Triad is a brilliant card game, which shines through when you play the pale imitation of it offered up in Final Fantasy IX.

1.Sephiroth's Fire Walk (Final Fantasy VII) - This is the fan boy in me right here. Final Fantasy VII was my first Final Fantasy, and this scene blew my mind. It is iconic within the game, so much so that the guys at Square re-created it just so that it could be used in Advent Children. This scene perfectly displays Sephiroth's final descent into madness as he used his powers to slaughter a town full of innocents.

Stephen Randle
HONORABLE MENTIONS

Massive CGI cutscenes - The games have been of varying degrees of quality, but nobody calls Square-Enix on their cutscenes, done in full CGI. Hell, they even went back and did them for the old 16-bit games in the PS1 re-releases and they were all awesome.

You Spoony Bard! (FFIV) - If you don't know why that's funny, this is entirely the wrong theme week for you.

Sephiroth walks through fire (FFVII) - Favourite visual image of any FF game, I used it as my desktop background for years.

5. Three Team Battles (FFVI) - The ultimate in resource management, multiple times during the game you were forced to use every member of your team (up to 12 people!) in multiple fighting groups. No sticking with the same four people the entire game, creating a single super-team, you actually had to balance everyone and make sure everybody had weapons. My favourite of these situations was the Snowfield battle for the Esper, where not only do you have to split into three teams and fight waves of enemies, you only have 8 people to fill three four-person teams. Bet you wish you'd spent time teaching Gau in the Veldt now!

4.Cecil Goes From Dark to Light (FFIV) - Nothing like having your main character suddenly change from a bad-ass Dark Knight with bad-ass sword skills into a paladin full of white magic after a battle in which you have to fight yourself. Sure, I miss the sword skills, but it's really nice to not have to buy potions anymore. One of the climactic parts of IV, where your character can finally stop running and start fighting back against evil.

3.Flying An Airship Around the World(FFIV, VI, VII, VIII, IX) - In a world where there were still random encounters, nothing is more dangerous and/or tedious than walking the world map, unsure when you'll get attacked. And nothing is more freeing than the time when you get your first airship. Airship travel has also always been enhanced by some of the best music in the game, including "Searching For Friends" from VI and Cid's Theme from VII. Extra points, of course, go to my favourite airship, Setzer's gambler-themed Blackjack in FFVI.

2.The Death of Aeris (FFVII) - Oh yeah, spoiler alert. Whatever. This has to make the list due to the "cultural impact" in that it was the scene that everyone talks about in FFVII and led to several urban gaming myths about how to resurrect her in the game. FF's previously had killed off major characters, but never major playable ones, so that was a big deal, too. Personally, the scene didn't have that much impact on me personally, other than being pissed off that I'd spent the entire first third of the game building her up into my magic/healing resource, which the game totally encourages through the gear she gets, and now she was gone.

1.Kefka Destroys The World (FFVI) - Now we're talking. In the history of major evil villains, they all talk a big game about destroying the entire world and re-shaping it as they see fit, but Kefka, the massively evil clown, actually succeeds, and all your party can do is watch in disbelief, then get scattered to the ends of the earth in the resulting chaos. When the dust settles, the entire world map has changed dramatically, and you're all alone. It's also notable that, whereas in the first half of the game, most of the focus was on Terra and her fight against the Empire, the main character for much of the second half is, in my opinion, Celes, as she attempts to bring her friends back together and re-unite a world she, in part, helped lead to destruction.

Well kids I hope you enjoyed our trip to fantasy land this week. I also hope that you all enjoy Final Fantasy XIII as well. So I leave one game in and just don't turn it off. I'll get to Mass Effect. I promise I will.

Next week we have a list full of disappointment and frustration, No they are not about Mark's Mom. Next week we will be visiting our top 5 biggest gaming let downs. Honorable Mentions: 1.Rydia comes back and saves you from getting destroyed by Golbeze- After what you had done to her mom early in the game this was a pleasant surprise.

2. Palom and Porom stone themselves in order to save your lives. It's common for adults to do something but kids turning into stone to save you just unheard of.

Final fantasy IV remains my favorite because of Cecil's development and the fact that each character was good at one thing. Unlike most other Final fantasy's where everyone can cast magic only a select few could.

My list
5. Tellah kills himself by casting meteo- Every time i play this game I am so happy when Tellah kills himself. He is one the most annoying useless characters ever.

4. Blitzball- I spent hours playing blitzball on X and was excited they were bringing it into X-2 thought they were going to make it more challenging boy was I wrong.

3. Cecil becomes paladin- A lot of people hate on the paladin but it was a necessary step for his character to purge the evil in his soul.

2. Aeris dies- This scene right here lets you know Sephiroth takes no prisoners and makes you want to kicks his ass in the end.

1. Kefka destroys the world- Just an interesting twist in a great FF. Blowing up the world and destroying innocent lives and wondering if all your friends made it. It just shows you how overcome with power Kefka had become

What, no FFVI Opera Scene?

Top 5:
5. You spoony bard!
4. Rescuing Celes
3. Escaping the Dreadnought Leviathan on XII
4. Rydia returns
5. FFVI Opera scene

Bet you can't tell which two entries I'm a huge fan of.

I agree with pretty much everything, except I would add a few:

Zack's Last stand (Crisis Core) - I loved Crisis Core, and I wish it got a lil more love and this moment was one of my faves in the whole game..He was so close to seeing aeris again, but didn't make it. I felt like that was one of the saddest moments I've had in gaming.

Opening from ffx2 - I don't really care about the hate on x2, i enjoyed it and I thought there was something about the opening that was epic.

Tidus and Yuna kiss (while creeper Kimiari peeps?) FFX - I thought it really gratifying to see the two of them finally get together.

Come on seriously? No Opera Scene from FFVI? I know these lists arent going to please everyone but I'll post my #1 FF moment:

Taking FFVIII out of my playstation, taking a good long look at it- shaking my head and putting it on the fucking shelf FOREVER.

No love for the Opera House?

Posted By: Robin (Guest)  on March 11, 2010 at 10:06 AM

Honorable: Final Fantasy 3 (not VI, 3, like...3), getting the airship 15 mins in - this was insane...no one should have that kind of power that early on...however, it did create some hilarious dialogue as you try to go around and "translate" everyone who's languages you haven't learned yet.

5. Aeris bites it - Great music, great FMV, still one of the saddest character deaths in all of gaming...but kinda of annoying if you leveled the piss out of Aeris (AND got her Ultimate Weapon...which is not actually hard to get). Still, it has lasting effects, even to this day.

4. Cecil goes Light - FFIV had probably one of the most solid out of the whole series, plus the depth of several vehicles/levels of Earth/Moon and all the characters coming and going as they please...but the main characters struggle with himself and the darkness is made all the more compelling when you have to defeat yourself to save yourself. How zen of you Cecil.

3. Growing Up - This is from the very first FF, which I played to death on the NES. The days of swinging at imaginary enemies and buying your spells seems like yesterday...but an awesome moment happens once you bring the Dragon King a rat tail...you grew up and become powerful as fuck! Black Belt's transformation into a Karate Master make him a small, quick tank (I one-shot crit the final boss with him, doing something like 20 hits and 3500 damage) and Warrior turning into Knight is just badass (he's more a Paladin since he can learn magic, but I digress). A seriously major moment, and one I don't believe has been duplicated in any FF game.

2. Kefka, like, blows up the world...and junk - How often does the villain get to carry out their evil plan? Well, in FF games, it happens more often than you think, but the big one (take over the world) is always just out of reach...until Kefka snatched that bitch out of thin air. The badassery of Kefka's ripping apart of the world is so awesome, he actually clones himself in another dimension and shows up as a villain in Mario RPG...for real, go check it out...hardest fight in the damn game. Anyway, the quest to bring everyone together again makes this an easy consideration for #2...which leaves...

1. Crossing the Bridge - This is a "cutscene" for the original game, where after finishing the prologue to the story (and encountering Garland for the first time), you cross the bridge onto the next continent and the screen flashes, taking you to a picture and scrolling text telling you of your journey as a Warrior Of Light. First time I ever saw this, I got REALLY excited...cause little did I know what kind of world was ahead of me. Simple? Yes, but in 1988...this was the greatest thing of all time...and you know what? It still kinda is.

Not a bad list at all. Here would be mine:

Honorable mention- Squall and Seifer Opening sequence (FF VIII), Bahamut vs Alexander (FF IX), Gold Saucer ride (FF VII), Locke uses Phoenix to say Goodbye (FF VI)

5. Triple Triad Card game- This game was so addicting it was unreal. Collecting all the cards took day in itself.

4. The Opera Scene (FFVI)- This scene just has a place in my heart. At the time it was so different and cool from anything else that ever happened in a RPG.

3. Endings done right (FFVI, FFVIII and FF IX)- Nothing bothered me more after finishing FF VII than the crappy ending. Aeriths was still dead after teasing she wouldnt be. The Love tease between Cloud and Tifa is left wide open and after a game deserved a major finale all we got was "Lifestream". The FFs I listed got it right for your 30-70 hours of play. Friends reunited, the bad guy destroyed, Love blossoms. Everything an ending should be in a game like this.

2. Sephiroth's Fire Walk (FF VII)- Still one of the coolest visuals in any FF. The man loses his mind and then proceeds to destroy everything in his way, Including the families of Cloud and Tifa.

1. Kefka Destroys the World (FF VI)- Just when u think everything was under control, FF VI throws the unexpected at you. The Bad guy succeeds in destroying the earth. The entire world...changed. Your entire party that you gathered...gone. You basically start all over 20 hours into a RPG.

Kyle, your post on Tellah reminds me...

I had a game genie for the SNES, and there was a code to increase EXP points. Basically, by the time Tellah dies chanting meteo, Palom (or Porom) already knew it. Odd that they restricted Tellah from learning it, but not the other characters before that event.

honorable mention 1 - final fantasy 8 - opening movie, even tho the game sucks balls this opening movie completely blew my mind back in the day

honorable mention 2 - final fantasy 13, the gang returns to eden with their eidolons, just an epic beautiful moment that gets your blood rushing.

5 - Final Fantasy X - opening, when otherworld starts playing and tidus plays blitzball while sin destroys zanarkand, epic all around.

4 - Final Fantasy IX - Bahamut vs Alexander - this "cutesy, disney" ff, beats 7 and 8 in terms of badassery on this fmv alone, if you havent seen it then go on youtube and find it.

3 - final fantasy 7 - sepiroth burns nibelheim, just chilling stuff.

2 - Final fantasy 6 - opera scene, it's famous and world reknowned for a reason, it's one of the most romantic and charming scenes in any games ever, not nearly as forced as most of the love stories in games nowadays, really showed how emotional and dramatic you could get with 16 bit graphics.

1 - final fantasy 7 - aeris' death, the moment that made millions of geeks cry in despair, that alone is worth the top spot.

Honorable mentions:

You spoony bard! (IV)

Liberi Fatali (VIII): My favorite opening in the series.

5. Rydia returns (IV): Though she was a little girl when lost at sea, an older Rydia the summoner returns just in time to save Cecil from being devoured by Golbez's creature of shadow.

4. Sephiroth discovers himself (VII): Upon finding out the details of his parentage and birth, the ultimate soldier turns against humanity, starting with a razing of a village, which leads to that awesome shot of him standing in the flames.

3. Maria and Draco (VI): Celes is a general, not some opera floozy! That didn't stop her from taking the place of Maria, a woman targeted by Setzer to be his bride, in an attempt to trap the gambler. Great music, but I wonder what the opera goes thought seeing the show interrupted by a falling octopus, a non-scripted fight, and the kidnapping of the female lead.

2. Bid farewell to your bloodstained past (IV): Cecil starts out as a dark knight who follows his king's orders despite any concerns that what he's doing is wrong. In a memorable scene atop Mt. Ordeals, Cecil is bathed in hollowed light, becoming a paladin and banishing his darker half. This is the true start of Cecil's quest to save the world.

1. Mad Dance of Victory (VI): Kefka does what so many villains are prevented from doing; he destroys the world! I was shocked the first time I saw Kefka take in the magical power of the Warring Triad, granting him the power to dispose of anyone he wants at any time!

I think FF7 and FF10's cut scenes should get a mention just because of how "iconic" they were. They broke in new eras of video cut scenes. I dunno if they were the first for each system, but they are the most memorable.

My list prolly isn't too long:

FF9 - Vivi wards off the Black Waltz in the Airship chase scene. I think it is because it was really well done and added some depth and clarity to one of my favorite characters in the series, Vivi.

FFX - Blitzball. Talk about the ultimate mini-game! But those damn Al Bhed Psyches were on steroids and stuff..

FFXII - The license system was a great moment because it really allowed for the first time total control of your character's development. If you wanted someone to have an axe while still being great at magick, you could.

Actually, I need to make a change. I don't know how, but I forgot this scene when making my list. So, this should be number 5 while Rydia's return is dropped to honorable mention.

5. Now is the time to choose! (X): Yuna and her guardians have been on a quest to stop Sin, but upon realizing one of her guardians will just replace Sin, the party decides to fight this fate instead! The powerful Yunalesca isn't pleased with the decision and a huge fight ensues. Auron's quick speech here is especially memorable!

I didn't play FFVII for a week after Aeris died. I swore up and down I did something wrong and tried to go back and replay it and alas, Aeris still bought it. I have never had such an emotional attachment to a game as I did then.

Right, because Phoenix Down doesn't work during cutscenes, only in-game. Real solid writing. Lol.
