Loves It or HATES IT! 3.26.10: Sony
Posted by Justin Weinblatt on 03.26.2010

Got a lot of great feedback on last week's Nintendo column. Let's take a look!

Comment Time!

The influence of the hardcore gamer is over-claimed by hardcore gamers. All the console makes know their bread and butter is the "casual" market. The families and the people who see them as fashion accessories.

Posted By: Q:? (Guest)  on March 19, 2010 at 05:29 AM

I disagree. The casual gamers may buy the consoles, but it's the hardcore gamers who buy 20+ games in a given year. Software sales are where the money is.

This question is about 1/2 sarcasm, but does "hardcore gamer" mean anyone who only cares about graphics versus gameplay? Because that sure as hell is different from the my understanding of it.

Posted By: MissyNEVERwearssockswithShoes (Guest)  on March 19, 2010 at 02:06 PM

It's not just about graphics. A more powerful console can handle more complex physics, bigger environments, more enemies, etc. Look at Dead Rising on the Wii vs 360. Graphics and gameplay are tightly connected. They go together like ramma lanna ding dong a wippity woop de woo.

Nope, I loved it too and never knew why it caught so much flack. For one, it felt comfortable as hell in my hands (more so than the PS2 or Xbox controllers). Also, the buttons were basically laid out in the same was the PS2/Xbox controllers, it's just that they were shaped differently. I remember Capcom Vs. SNK 2 getting a bad review on Gamespot because the Gamecube controller allegedly sucked, but then I bought it myself and thought "What's the problem here?" I thought it was fine.

Okay, that's the longest rant defending the Gamecube controller I've ever gone on.

Posted By: Guest1111 (Guest)  on March 21, 2010 at 01:36 AM

I played Capcom vs SNK2 at a competitive level. I couldn't deal with the GC controller. It doesn't work well. The shoulder triggers are too recessed, and it's difficult to hit y and x together. You also have one less shoulder button which sucks if you want a 3x punch and 3x kick button. Not to mention that the d-pad is small and annoyingly out of the way. The GC controller does work ok for some games. CvS 2 is not one of them. Thanks for reading.

Great article, just a couple of points:

The game cube controller was also great for the Day of Reckoning games.

Also on Mariokart Wii, the classic controller (not the GC controller) is best. Though I freely admit that's all a matter of opinion, just sharing mine.

And the biggest benefit of casual games/gamers: as games become more common the "stigma" attached to playing them diminishes.

In other words, if you get your girl to play Wii Sports or Wii Fit or whatever, she's less likely to look at you odd when you play God of War because at least she's familiar enough that she just dislikes WHAT you play and not the fact that you play at all...

just my 2 cents

Posted By: M:-X (Guest)  on March 19, 2010 at 12:45 PM

Alright. Well, the Gamecube controller isn't bad for all games. That was an exaggeration. Still, whenever there were multi-platform games they were inevitably better on the PS2 controllers. The first set of X-box controllers were crappy, but the newer controllers were better than the GC. Good point about casual gaming and thanks for reading.

There were a bunch of other good comments, but unfortunately I can't respond to them all. Rest assured though, that I do read and appreciate them. The comments have been great so keep them coming!

And now for the main attraction!

Loves It or HATES IT!
Sony

Ok, I'm going to lay my cards on the table. I'm not a fan of Sony. I own a PlayStation, and a PlayStation 2, and didn't really have a problem with Sony until this generation of consoles. They lost me with the marketing campaign for the PS3. When they announced the PS3 Move, I really began to hate them. However, this column is about forcing myself to look at both sides, so let's see if I can convince myself to love Sony.

We Loves The Sonysssss... WE HATES THE SONYSSSSSS!!!

We Loves the Playstationsss- There is no doubt that Nintendo carried the industry from the NES era through the Super NES era. When it was time to move to the next generation, Nintendo showed that it was out of touch. Nintendo insisted on using cartridges despite the vastly improved storage capacity of the Compact Disc. Someone needed to challenge Nintendo, and Sega was a mess by that point (We're launching the Saturn in a week. SURPRISE!). If Sony hadn't challenged Nintendo, would games like Final Fantasy 7 have been created? Grand Theft Auto 3? Soul Edge? Resident Evil? The list goes on and on...

WE HATES THE PLAYSTATIONSSS- Before there was the red ring of death, there was the flashing light of death. This was a problem with the air vents on the PlayStation which would lead to temporary bricking. There were many other problems with the PlayStation launch units. The tray would fray, the laser would be destroyed by heat, and you would have often have to put the damn thing on its side for it to work. The PlayStation began the tradition of poorly made consoles.

Storage space, it's a good thing.

We Loves the PS2ssss- During the PlayStation era 3-d gaming was in its infancy. It wasn't until the PS2 era that things really began to take off. The list of great exclusives for the PS2 is absolutely staggering. Devil May Cry 1/3, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII, Twisted Metal Black, Shadow of the Colossus, Dragon Quest VIII, God of War, Fire Pro Wrestling Returns, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus (yeah I know I put it here twice), Katamari Damacy, Kingdom Hearts1/2, Ratchet and Clank, Jak, Sly Cooper... And that's just scratching the surface! PlayStation 2 has the best library of any console that ever existed, and I don't think that will ever be topped.

WE HATES THE PLAYSTATION 2- The PlayStation 2 was a mediocre system, with great marketing. It was basically running unopposed. Sega was circling the drain, Nintendo was woefully out of touch with consumer demands, and Microsoft was the new kid on the block. All Sony really had to do was put out a decent console, which they did. Being the only show in town meant that they got all the exclusives.

Give the marketing team credit, they did a great job selling the system to people. The DVD player probably didn't hurt either. However, the console itself wasn't as powerful as Microsoft's X-Box, or even Nintendo's purple lunchbox. Sonic Heroes, a game which ran without a hitch on X-Box and Gamecube, was nearly unplayable on the PS2 thanks to slowdown. The PS2 also only had 2 controller ports, when 4 was the norm. Like the Playstation, the PS2 had it's fair share of launch defects. The software was great, but the hardware was the weakest of its generation.

I am the PS2. Behold my glory!

We Loves the PSP- With all the DS hype, people seem to forget how successful the PSP is. The previous best selling non-Nintendo handheld console, was the Game Gear with about 11 million units sold. The PSP has nearly 60 million. Nintendo was thought to be untouchable in the handheld sector, but Sony put a chink in their armor. There is a large audience of players who wanted console quality games on the go, and Sony delivered.

WE HATES THE PSP- The PSP has exposed that Sony really isn't sure what the market wants anymore. At first Sony tried to push the UMD format for movies. Anybody with common sense would have figured out that people didn't want to buy a UMD instead of a DVD. They tried to market it as an MP3/Internet browser/waffle iron/etc, but in that regard they couldn't compete with Apple, or smart phones. Maybe, if Sony decided to focus on marketing the console as a gaming machine, they wouldn't be a very very distant second right now. Sure they sold a decent amount of consoles, but that wasn't their goal. They wanted to take the handheld market, and they failed.

And speaking of failure, the PSP may just be the worst flop in gaming since the Virtual Boy. Not only is the console more expensive, but it's not even compatible with software from other PSPs. In an industry where backwards compatibility is the standard, it's amazing that the PSP Go isn't even sideways compatible.

Fail.

Switch it up.

WE HATES THE BLU-RAY- If there is to be a hostile takeover of the world by sentient machines in some sort of Sky Net scenario, it will likely be Sony who instigates it. Sony wants to take over every single inch of your living room. They want you to play video games on your Sony console, connected to your Sony TV. If you get bored of that you can watch a Sony created blu-ray disc, on your PS3, and then head to your Vaio to blog about how much you love Sony. Then all the machines gather together into a terminator robot. Then humanity ends.

The launch of the PS3 was more about the DVD format wars than the console wars. Sony cared more about selling blu-ray players than selling PS3s. So, they got their wish, and I'm sure they're making a ton of money manufacturing blu-ray discs. Unfortunately, they lost their iron grip on the game market in the process.

We Loves the Blu-Ray- Oh no! An electronics company wants to sell you electronics! RUN! HIDE! Of course Sony wants to sell you Blu-ray players. This is a capitalist country. If you don't like it go to China.

There is nothing wrong with using the PS3 to sell Blu-ray. It was, and still is, a pretty good value for a Blu-ray player/next-gen game console.

You can't have any PS3 until you eat your Blu-ray. How can you have any PS3, if you don't eat your Blu-ray?

WE HATES THE MOVE- Sega's old motto was "Sega does what Nintendon't." Sony's should be "Sony does what Nintendoes". Analog stick? That's a cool idea. Rumbling controllers? Sounds good. Achievements? Let's call them trophies. (Yeah, I know that one was Microsoft.)

Hey, Nintendo is making a lot of money with that Wii thing. Hmmmmmm... let's try to develop something similar. How similar do you want it boss? Really similar. In fact, make it exactly the same. And make sure it comes bundled with a sports game.

I'm really not sure how Nintendo's legal system is letting this fly. This is theft of ideas. Pure and simple. Even beyond the morality issues, the Move is an awful move. Instead of providing any sort of innovation, Sony is re-releasing 4 year old technology. The casual market does not care about HD gaming. They care about novelty. The PSThriimote is already dated.

We Loves the Move- A company creates a piece of hardware. Later on it becomes an industry standard. Sony developed the dual analog sticks, and by the next generation it was the industry standard. That's just the way things work. The camera interactivity will separate the Move from the Wiimote. There are gamers out there who like motion controls, and enjoy HD graphics. This is for them.

The verdict- There is no doubt that the PS1 and PS2 were successful consoles. After that, Sony suffered from the same problem as Nintendo. They thought that the people would buy anything they made. Now, they're pulling up the rear.

What has Sony really brought to the table this console generation? Microsoft revolutionized online gaming, Nintendo created motion controls, and Sony ummm copied them. I understand trying to make your own motion controls. But that was just too blatant to allow. So...

WE HATES THE SONYSSSS!

Sony is on a roll. Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, White Knight Chronicles, MLB the show 10, God of War 3. Next Mod Nation Racers then Gran Turismo 5 in the fall.

Sony lost me with the PS3. Charging $600 for a piece of hardware was ridiculous. Plus their insistance on taking over my home entertainment was annoying.

I bought both systems at their launch. First having each, I loved the 360, until the 2nd one I had red-ringed on me. By that time, the PS3 had starting releasing some pretty good games and I preferred the PS3 ports of most games (BATMAN ARCHAM ASYLUM ESPECIALLY!).

Now with games like Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, and the exclusives mentioned earlier, on top of having the blu-ray player, and I figured out I don't like paying for multiplayer when I can play the same games free on my PS3. Now my 360 rarely gets turned on, we've bought a 2nd PS3. =)

Justin, are you trying to get hurt saying you hate Sony? Those are fighting words to some. I'm sure you'll probably read some strong words for that

I'll go with I like Sony. They haven't done anything worthy of my love

Well, we can understand that you hate your Sony for whatever reason. I wonder if you'll do the same thing with Microsoft next? If you put LOVES Microsoft, then you are just another anti-Sony troll... I'm glad they keep records of this so we can compare previous articles to see if you are consistent in your beliefs.

You blasted Nintendo more and loved them. And in this generation of consoles, the Sony Piece of Shit is the lesser of the three evils by a long shot, with its comp being the Nintendo Weak and Shit-Box 360. Superior hardware between the real consoles, and free online with bluray plus a growing library of great exclusives.

Sony ummm made better games!!! Metal gear solid 4, killzone 2, uncharted 1-2, resistance 1-2, heavy rain, god of war 3...the list goes on!!!

i have owned all the consoles released within the past 15 odd years and my fav have always been sony. when dmc4 came out on the ps3/360 i ditched my 360 and bought a ps3 as the controller is much better ( you cant play dmc with a shitty 360 controller)and free online play!

i havnt tocuhed my 360 since, last i saw of it was my dad using it as an underused dvd player. tbh if he wasnt using it for that il be using it as a doorstop!

Sony has more exclusives than the X360, and the exclusives are for japan-centric genres and games which appeal to me. Also one of the biggest purchasing factors for me was the Sony Controller. I hated both the gamecube and xbox controllers and the hatred carries over to the wii and x360. Had sony went with the boomerang monstrosity, things may have been different.

I have been accused of being a Sony fanboy, although really I am more of a Sega fanboy at heart. Still, I have to defend the PS3 here. I skipped the PSOne in favor of a Nintendo 64...I don't regret it, but clearly I had the poor console of that generation. I had a PS2 and I loved it to death. Why was it a poor console? The system never quit on me after years of use (and I have one of the launch models) the games are great and I don't have to switch it off and use something different to watch movies. I also have a Gamecube and it has some fun games, but it can't compare to the PS2. Xbox was better in terms of specs, but not games. Saying the Gamecube is better spces-wise is blasphemy.

The PS3 has had a ton of issues and complaints and I see how fair some of them are. Shit, I agree with you on the whole "Move" thing. But my system has not broken down, ever! How many 360's people had? Some of my friends are already on their 5th or 6th 360. Me? I still have my PS3. I had a Wii before I had a PS3 and it was so boring I sold it with 3 remotes and 6 games for $200 so that I could complete the money I needed to get a PS3.

All systems this generation have had major faults, but given a choice from keeping my PS3 or trading it in for another system I would keep my PS3, thank you very much.

The PSP? That is crap and if I had one I would trade it for a DS any day.

You ask what Sony have done for this gen but clearly you haven't done your research.

How about making the PS3 the most open console ever?

I can use any bluetooth headset. I can use any bluetooth mouse. I can use any bluetooth keyboard. I can use any USB steering wheel. I can use any USB mass storage device. I can use any off-the-shelf laptop HDD. I can use any HDMI cable.

I can plug my camera into it and view photos, same for my video camera and portable music player. Hell, I can even hook my Blackberry up to it.

Gone are the day of proprietry memory cards, etc. Sony could have kept to that model but instead they opened it up.

Don't want to buy a Sony PS3 headset then don't! Buy something else. Ditto for memory cards, steering wheels, internal storage, HDMI cables and so on.

The PS3 is the most consumer friendly and open console ever produced. Yes, it was overpriced to begin with but it's not now so price shouldn't be a factor in assessing the merits of the PS3.

That's what Sony has brought to this gen but for some reason you've chosen to ignore this. Bravo.

LoL, I love the Sony trolls reasoning here. If you say you hate Sony and then say you love Microsoft, that instantly makes you a troll and microfanboy. Of course, it has nothing to do with your opinion. Everything stated here was balanced very well, especially the part about innovation and moving forward. This generation Sony have done nothing original yet people have come on here shouting "GAMES GAMES, LOOK AT OUR GAMES" clearing missing the point of that argument and then others have come on and because you've DARED to put Sony down it instantly labels you as a hater. I always wonder, when video game developers come out and knock consoles, do these same lame ass idiots who can't see that 1 and 1 equals 2, accuse these same people of being fan boys too. Posting articles like this is always interesting, but sadly, in the world we live in, a lot of it will go over peoples heads due to the fan boys inability to see that their console which they love so much (its a FUCKING CONSOLE PEOPLE) might have flaws. Great read.

I don't hate Sony, but I don't support them either. I owned an N64 because I preferred it to the PSOne, then decided to join at the PS2 stage because the console seemed the best on the market, I also bought a PSP and enjoyed it for all of 6 months.

I refuse to buy a PS3 based on the principle that I already own an Xbox 360 and a Blu-Ray player, so I don't need a PS3. 90% of the games I want to play are either Xbox exclusive or multi-format anyway, add onto that I'm not paying £250+ for a console before I get any games etc with it

Posted By: Gorsty (Guest)  on March 26, 2010 at 10:43 AM

A year ago I'd agree. I was firmly settled in with my 360 with no intentions whatsoever of getting a PS3. I was firmly a 360 fanboy. Then came the PS3 slim. Now, well, looking at my game collection, after the trade-ins I've done and purchases made since the slim(I bought mine in September, after my 360 took its second dump) I have exactly 4 Xbox games and 10 PS3 games.

Ya, count me as loves the Sony.

I like Sony. But even the hardcore Sony fans have to admit that Sony has blundered this generation nearly as bad as Microsoft did, albeit in a different way. Microsoft made junk, Sony was arrogant and thought that slapping a PS name on something was good enough to sell it.

Posted By: Todd Vote (Guest)  on March 26, 2010 at 12:44 PM

I have all 3 of the current consoles and without a doubt spend the MOST time on my PS3.

For starters the controller is an evolution on the older controllers, so if you played PS1 & PS2 the controller just feels RIGHT. I despise the 360 controller, triggers or no triggers.

Secondly about the Move-- someone else on this site pointed out that motion control has been around since the Power Pad, but the PS2 eye toy basically did what Wii, Natal & Move do, just in a more primitive fashion.

finally if you haven't seen a good Blu Ray (documentaries & animation look the best IMHO), you don't know what you're missing. I bought my PS3 as a BR player because I'm more of a movie guy than a game guy (though I enjoy both), and I absolutely do not regret it.

" Microsoft revolutionized online gaming"

WTF? Valve revolutionised online gaming. Sony revolutionised it for consoles back in 2001 with the emergence of the network adaptor and HDD. All Microsoft did was charge people for it, whereas STEAM was completely free and offers infinitely more.

The NGC was better than PS2 graphically, and the mini discs was a nice idea. N64 was almost every bit as good as the PSX but just didn't have a library as impressive nor could it utilize CDs.

I disagree. The casual gamers may buy the consoles, but it's the hardcore gamers who buy 20+ games in a given year. Software sales are where the money is.
This reminds me of something that has occured with the Transformers toys. You have a small number of die-hard fans, who consistantly buy the toys. Then you have the parents who buy for the kids. They greatly outnumber the collecters. Hasbro learned the hard way, from the Alternators and Titanium toylines that making lines just for the collectors was a mistake. While the collectors buy a lot each year, the parents buy a few. But since there are so many parents buying, they account for the vast majority of the sales. Of course I don't know the what accounts for the sales percentages, but somebody has to by buying all those half assed shovelware games.
I think that not only is compitition important, but that it needs to have the competitors doing something different. Sega was able to gain ground by doing mature games when Nintendo wouldn't. Right now, Microsoft and Sony have largely been focusing on doing the same types of games. It seems like every major release is a M rated shooter or action game with an anti-hero protagonist. Nintendo on the other hand does very good games that are E or T rated, and has been bringing in new gamers.

I love my Wii dearly. In any case, I'm going to be buying a PS3 in a few months instead of an XBox 360. If I'm spending money to get an HD system, might as well get the more powerful one. Besides, XBox 360's failure rate is way too high for my $$$. It's funny, but the same complaints I have about Microsoft this generation are the same I had about Sony during the previous generation.

Posted By: MissyNEVERwearssockswithShoes (Guest)  on March 26, 2010 at 10:04 PM

I'll do some responses here that won't fit into the reader comments next week.

Spank- I pretty much care only about games, at least in this columns. Sure it's nice that you can hook up Blue Tooth devices to your PS3 and what not, but how does that innovate gaming? Besides, I have a computer for most of those things.

Minimoose- Good point, but I think that the market for Transformers and Video Games are different. The number of hardcore transformers fans is presumably smaller than the number of hardcore gaming fans. Call of Duty has sold over 10+ million copies so far, and those copies aren't being sold to moms looking for their kids.

i cant deny that sony has made some mistakes with the psp and the ps3, but i still brought a ps3 cause it has he games i want plain and simple. It doesnt matter what sort of hardware you have as long as you have games that people want to play. I still bust out my n64 every now and then for goldeneye and wwf no mercy, also brought a xbox 2nd hand so i could play halo 2 and doom 3. Its all down to software and what you want.

Got the Ps3 when I went through my third 360. Just recently got another 360 because I still had all my games. The Ps3 is a great system, but as far as the motion controls go...no thanks. That's what the WII is for. And besides, Natal looks like it could be pretty cool and only 99 bucks

So you mean that due to the mistakes they made early in the generation nothing they do going forward matters? They botched their launch, no one can dispute that, but they've fixed most of the problems they had back then and are now at the very least as good of an alternative as any, and we're still about halfway trough this generation so there's plenty of time.

Because you can't copyright a way to play a game. It's evolution. If Nintendo can sue sony for the move, then they should sue every other console company ever to design a videogame system based on the fact that they all use controllers.

Sony Fanboy's make me HATE Sony!

And yet you chose to ignore everyone who explained they're reasoning and chose to focus on the one guy who mentioned next week's column. Maybe that tells more about you than it does about them.

I think you're missing his point. This column didn't mention anything about PS3 games, but ppl are quick to ignore Justin reasons for not liking Sony and just bringing up games that the PS3 has. Which I doubt SOME of them have or even want, but what do I know. I could be wrong

Sure, Sony suck for a lot of the reasons you mentioned. However, I just can't 'hate' a company that has given me so many awesome games. The PS2 was the best console of all time. The PSP has a pretty extensive library of awesome and innovative games. And the PS3, well Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 are worth the price of the console alone (plus The Last Guardian is coming this year).

I'm no Sony fanboy. I prefer Xbox 360 to PS3 and I prefer DS to PSP. Also I think Move is a shit idea. But every time you count Sony out, they find a way to bring you back, so I can't really bring myself to hate them.

Oh btw, you know that 'Games On Demand' thing that Microsoft have? Sony did it first. The PSP was the first home console (ie. not counting PC) that provided that service. THAT'S their innovation for this generation. ;)

Have to agree I'm with the 'Hates' section here. I was a loyal Sony fan until PS2... having the piece of crap just die and eat discs like a starving ophan was ridiculous. Had about four PS2's until I gave up on a fifth and bought an Xbox with Halo.

After seeing several people trade in PS3's for 360's, I'm glad I took that route. I fail to see how Nintendo haven't sued the balls off Sony yet.

I agree with this as far as PS2. However, by the same logic, you should hate Microsoft because of the amazingly high failure rate of the 360. Don't let your feelings bout the PS2 cloud your judgment about the PS3.

I love the PS3 and the 360. The PS3 has been mostly a Blu Ray player until MAG and Ratchet and Clank. My 360 is the system I use the most for gaming, though I also use it for Netflix.

I love my PSP. I don't like the PSP GO, but I feel the PSP is better than he DS because the DS has too many flash games.
