The Silicon Valley 10 &1! 3.30.10: Top 10 Animated Series That Should Be Video Games
Posted by Justin Weinblatt on 03.31.2010

Hello and welcome back to The Silicon Valley 10 & 1 by Justin Weinblatt. For those of you who may not have been here last week, there was a violent coup over at 411, and when the smoke cleared I was left in control of the Silicon Valley. So, I'll be here for all your listing needs.

Before I start, I'm going to take this opportunity to plug my other column.
On Fridays Check Out: Loves it or HATES IT!

Last week: The Silicon Valley 10 & 1. Top 10 Animated Series That Should Be Video Games!

Let's take a look at...

10. Hombre: Am I the only one who'd love to see a Crash Bandicoot animated series? Quite possibly. It could be a decent show, but nobody cares about the franchise anymore.

9. Guest 9717: Now that sega is out of the hardware biz and just publuishes, whats wrong with just having PSN and XBL ports of Shenmue 1 & 2? They don't have to do anything and the game is now legendary enough through word of mouth that it's a license to print money.

8. Guest 4364: Can you cant say you wouldnt want to see a Conkers Bad Fur Day series??? No, I cannot. I didn't think of it at the time, but that would be a great idea.

7. Sumo: STAR FOX should have been #1 Lot of love for Star Fox in the comments. It could work.

6. Jim: God of War 3. You'd know if you played it. The Porn Star shit is tasteless. Asia Carrera is a member of Mensa, a skilled pianist, a gamer, and a computer whiz.

5.Fox: Please not Kingdom Hearts. I hate that series. I just wish it would die already, since there is a recent rumor that they're making more KH games, I hope they never see the light of day.

On topic, I would like to see Star Fox as an anime. It is one of the few games that doesn't have an animated series yet, and it has the potential, as there is already superb voice acting in the games. I don't get the hatred for certain series. If you don't like a series, don't play it and it won't hurt you.

4. Gee Spotter: How about Splinter Cell, Gears of War, and Metal Gear Solid? Of the three, I've only played Metal Gear. It could work as an animated movie, but I'm not sure about an animated series.

3. Deathpool: Shenmue could be good, but you know half of every episode would consist of moving crates around and asking if anyone wants to try Lucky Hit.

2. Nick M: The hilariously bad/campy 1989 version aside, I've always wanted to see a true animated series for The Legend Of Zelda A few people mentioned this, but I'm not feeling it. Like Samus, I think Link should remain silent. However, unlike Metroid, I don't think Zelda would work as an animated series with a silent protagonist.

1. Steve The Goose: Justin, AWESOME job brother! I already like you 1 MILLION times then that other HACK! I'm glad he got fired for sending nude pics to Lansdell!
Is that how he got fired? I thought it was for that thing... you know... with Auron....

Video games and cartoons go together like peanut butter and jelly. Or at least they should. More frequently, they go together like fish and an old sneaker. Last week, I discussed video game series that should have animated series. This week we're going to flip things around.

Top 10 Animated Series That Should Be Video Games!

This list wound up being a lot harder than the last. The problem is that nearly any mainstream cartoon series has had a game devoted to it at some point. There have been a few very good cartoon based games out there. Any gamer from my generation has fond memories of the Ninja Turtle games, the Naruto Series has had some solid entries, and DBZ games are usually good for some stupid fun. Even Duck Tales had a very good game. Unfortunately, this is not the norm. Most cartoon based games are quick attempts to cash in on stupid kids. With that in mind, many series on this list already have a game or two (or 12) based on them. This list is meant to show the series that can have GOOD games.

And now...The LIST!

10. Voltron

Try to stick with me while I explain this idea. This game would require 4 players (sorry not five). Player 1 stands on a Wii Balance Board and controls your mech's movement by leaning in the direction you want to move Voltron. Lifting a leg will perform a kick.

Player's 2 and 3 each hold a Wii-mote in one hand. These Wii-motes each control one of Voltron's arms. The right arm would most likely be a sword, with the left functioning as a fist or cannon.

Player 4 will be holding 2 Nunchucks (which will be attached to the Wii-motes that players 2 and 3 are holding). One joystick would be used to control the head of Voltron, effectively controlling your camera. The other joystick would be used to control Voltron's elevation. The triggers for the nunchucks would change/reload the weapons in the arms.

I hope that made sense. This idea is impractical, and most likely wouldn't work. If it could be managed though, it would reach levels of awesome never thought possible. It would be the ultimate co-op experience.

9. Wacky Races.

Screw Mario Kart, this series was the pioneer in ridiculous racing. Wacky Races featured 11 strange racers in 11 even stranger vehicles. As the racers try their best to reach the finish line the villainous Dick Dastardly and his pet dog Muttley (who reminds me an awful lot of the Duck Hunt Dog), try their best to screw everyone over. With a formula so easily converted to a kart racer, why hasn't this been made into a game yet?

Actually it has, which shocked the hell out of me when I did some research. There were several games for the franchise going from the NES to the PS2. The Dreamcast version actually was well received. The problem with all these games though, was that they were too close to the original. A newer version of the game should include other classic Hanna Barbera franchises, such as the Flintstones and the Jetsons, to bring in a larger fanbase.

8. Fairly Oddparents

Scribblenauts was a really interesting game. It featured a unique gameplay mechanism, and a lot of creativity. But the presentation was kind of... well boring. The main character in particular was a generic blob that could have easily been replaced by a piece of wood, without losing much. So next time, how about replacing him with good old Timmy Turner? The Fairly Odd license would fit this game like a glove. You control Timmy Turner, and you can type in "wishes" to the offscreen Godparents. If they could tighten the controls, and infuse some of Fairly Oddparents' wit and charm, this could go from interesting idea, to great game.

7..Dexter's Laboratory

Similar to The Fairly Oddparents, this game would be based closely on an existing game. Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts was a fairly good game, but associating it with the Banjo license made little sense. Having Banjo in a vehicle based game alienated fans of the series. You know what license would have made more sense for this game? Dexter's Laboratory. Instead of having Banjo competing with Grunty, you have Dexter competing with his arch rival Mandark in various events. You'd need to give Dexter a bigger arsenal of parts to work with, and more varied objectives, but if you did this would be a really fun game.

6. Captain N: The Game Master

Maybe this one is cheating. Captain N: The Game Master was a series about a dude named Kevin who is sucked into his TV. According to an ancient prophecy, he will help Princess Lana and the N Team , super deformed versions of Simon Belmont, Kid Icarus (no not Pit), and Mega Man, to reclaim Videoland from the clutches of Mother Brain.

As a kid, I loved seeing all of these classic game characters together. That being said, the series is painfully dated by today's standards, but with a few small upgrades this could make a great game. The protagonist, either Kevin or a new creation, could travel through various Nintendo worlds battling various Nintendo baddies. Basically a Nintendoized version of Kingdom Hearts. Preferably with less preteen hormones.

5. Scooby Doo, Where Are You?

With the recent resurgence in point and click adventures, (Phoenix Wright, Sam and Max, Zack and Wiki, Hotel Dusk, etc.) this would be the perfect time to make a Scooby Doo game in that style. Players would control Shaggy, with his faithful great dane at his side. They would seek to unravel the mystery behind a series of hauntings. Perhaps, the pair would stop occasionally to eat giant sandwiches, or toke on a Scooby Snack. Quick time events could be used for chase scenes, and capturing the crooked real estate brokers in ghost costumes. Think Phoenix Wright mixed with Day Of The Tentacle. Oh and the Harlem Globetrotters. Include the Harlem Globetrotters.

4. Captain Planet

Earth! Fire! Wind! Water! Heart! Captain Planet was a show that I'm sure most of you remember. Five teenagers are given rings that each control one of the 4 elements (and heart). These "Planeteers" are tasked with defending the planet. When things get a bit too hairy, the teens can combine their powers to summon Captain Planet.

The series is really campy, and has an early 90's edutainment aesthetic. Unlike Captain N, which should ditch the camp, Captain Planet should embrace it. Have the kids make frequent cheesy environmentalist speeches, crappy puns as they battle villains, and all that good stuff. This game could work, the same way that the 60's Batman series did.

3. Powerpuff Girls

My personal favorite cartoon. For those of you who haven't watched it, the Powerpuff Girls is a brilliant show that manages to simultaneously embrace and lampoon the superhero genre. There have been quite a few games based on the franchise, but all of them have sucked hardcore.

A good PPG game should be an sandbox game that takes place in the city of Townsville. As one of the three girls, you stop robberies, catch criminals, fight gigantic monsters, and cause massive destruction. Once in a while, the more noteworthy villains will make an appearance to move the story along.

Under the sweet innocent exterior, the Powerpuff Girls are violent and a destructive. The glee that the girls take in destruction is something that works with 5 year old heroes, that would not work with 20 year old heroes. Embrace this aspect of the show, and you could make a kick ass game.

2. Trigun

I'm sure that there are a whole lot of great anime series that I missed. Truth is I don't watch much anime these days. I did watch Trigun though, and that could make a fantastic game. Trigun tells the tale of Vash the Stampede, a legendary gunslinger who is feared by all, despite being goofy and somewhat of a pacifist. Vash is forced into constant conflict by his brother Knives, and his band of mercenaries.

Western settings are always fun, and Trigun could make for a very interesting shooter. The key difference between this game, and a typical FPS is that you would have to neutralize your opponents without killing them. If you kill ANYONE you lose. After all, Vash isn't the type to blast through every enemy in his path. The various Gung-ho-Guns could make for some excellent and unique boss fights. All in all, this series has the makings of a great game.

1. Avatar: The Last Airbender

Like the Powerpuff Girls, Avatar has had quite a few video games based on it. Also like the Powerpuff Girls, the games range from bad to awful. One or two of them have grazed the edges of mediocrity, but have failed to reach even those less than lofty heights.

Avatar tells the story of Aang, the Avatar. The Avatar's task is to bring balance to the world, using his control over the four elements; earth, water, fire, and air. Control of the elements is closely tied with martial arts, so this game just screams for motion controls. The standard Wii is not quite up to the task, but Natal could work if the technology is good enough. The PlayStation move could also work, using two Moves, as could the Wii if it allowed you to use two motion-plus enabled Wii-motes. Creating a system of controlling the elements with motion controls would be a hell of a challenge. However, if this is done right it could draw in core gamers with satisfying controls, and could also draw in Avatar's sizable fanbase.

I spend way too much of my time watching cartoons, but even I haven't seen anywhere close to all of the great animation out there. So, it's up to you guys to fill in the blanks. What makes YOUR list of Video Games That Should Be Animated Series? Remember, THERE IS NO WRONG ANSWER!

I'm going to try my best to go with girl gamers for as long as I can. Mila Kunis, is an admitted WOW nerd. It's always hot to see a girl who may actually be interested in all the nerdy crap that spews forth from your mouth.

Avatar? Man have you never heard of the Avatar game for the 360 where you can get 1,000 achievement points in a matter of 50 seconds?

I think both of these may have older games, but I'd like to see something on one of the new platforms for both Xiaolin Showdown and Danny Phantom.

Quite a few of these had games. I think I know the problem with this column and this section of the site in general.

Most of you guys writing are in your mid to late teens, at the oldest, and quite possibly younger than that. You hear or otherwise see things that us older gamers mention but you weren't around at those times so you have no idea what you're talking about. What's worse is that none of you are actually dedicated gamers, so even though everything is out there for you to try, especially with emulation where it is now, none of you play anything so it doesn't even matter.

Actually, no my theory is probably still wrong as SHADE pointed out, you guys are so far from being gamers you can't even get things right for current games.

This section of 411 either needs to be scrapped or completely overhauled. Or maybe some writers just need to be axed.

Here's a great test to see who should be canned: If they are doing a Fact or Fiction if there answer is "I didn't play this game, I don't see why people like it" they should immediately be banned. That's just inexcusable. Maybe for an esoteric title you can understand it, but when people are posting that for major titles like Starcraft or what not, you have to just stop and go "is this guy really a gamer?"

Likewise if you never played Captain Planet on NES...well....

Dexter's Laboratory, Voltron, Scooby-Doo, Captain Planet, and Wacky Races: yes! I'm surprised Voltron and Dexter haven't had official console games (to my knowledge). I've seen ones for Captain Planet, Scooby-Doo, and Wacky Races, but a next-gen overhaul would do all of them good (hopefully).

Speaking of Voltron, 4 players using 4 Wii-motes to control different parts of Voltron doesn't sound too farfetched to me. I wouldn't be surprised if that showed up in a future Power Rangers Wii game. Then again, there likely has to be a "one player controls all parts" mode, too. Use the Wii Balance Board for movement and lift the legs for kicks, but use two Wii-motes - one in each hand (possibly with each hand having a different use).

Anyway, now onto the obligatory list of what animated series I'd like to see in video game form:

FLCL was the first that came to my mind. I wonder if a video game would be able to do justice to (or even contain all of) its craziness and chaos. However, there's not too much worry about cramming in too much content in one game since FLCL only had six episodes.

I'd love to see a Robot Chicken game, even though I wouldn't know where to start on what the game would be like.

I have to mention Clone High USA mainly because I miss that show. I don't know what kind of game it would be, but I think it would be hilarious in the meantime.

And finally, just a Looney Tunes game - not focused on one character, not a spin-off of some sort - simply a game involving only the Looney Tunes characters together. Actually, since WB acquired Midway, why not expand upon an idea like MK Vs DCU and have a Looney Tunes and Mortal Kombat crossover? It could give Kingdom Hearts a run for its money... okay, I'm joking about that. Somewhat.

I'm going to try to respond to this as calmly as I can.

IF YOU DIDN'T READ THE ARTICLE DON'T COMMENT!

"Unfortunately, this is not the norm. Most cartoon based games are quick attempts to cash in on stupid kids. With that in mind, many series on this list already have a game or two (or 12) based on them. This list is meant to show the series that can have GOOD games. "

"Like the Powerpuff Girls, Avatar has had quite a few video games based on it."

"There have been quite a few games based on the franchise, but all of them have sucked hardcore."

"Actually it has, which shocked the hell out of me when I did some research. There were several games for the franchise going from the NES to the PS2."

The fact of the matter is that I did put time and effort into writing this column. If someone disagrees with my columns, that's great. I like disagreement, and I've genuinely enjoyed reading and responding to most reader comments.

However, I will not tolerate people shitting all over my column when they didn't even bother to read it. Really if you don't like the column don't read it. Wait, you didn't read it. So don't even click on it. If you don't like the section, don't us. ALL of the writers here (in every section) put a good deal of effort into their columns, and we're not paid for our effort. I have shit to do in my life, and I'm not going to play an old Captain Planet game on an emulator so I could be qualified, in your eyes, to write for 411. You complain about us writing FoF without playing the games in question,(Btw we volunteer before we know what will be asked) yet you bitch about my column despite obviously not reading it. That is as hypocritical as it gets.

My name is Justin Weinblatt. I'm saying that for you, because I want you to remember it. If you see my name attached to any article I kindly ask you to not click on it, unless you are willing to take the time to read it (hell even skim it). I'm going to repeat this again. We work hard on these columns. Too hard to have people bitch about them without reading them.

To all other readers, I apologize for the rant. I've been really pleased with the responses I've been getting to my articles in the comments section. It's a great feeling to share your opinions with people, and have them read them and intelligently respond, even, and perhaps especially, when they have a differing opinion. Hopefully, you can understand my frustration.

nice try junior !

WTF?? By animated I thought you would at least have some anime in the list and only Trigun? FAIL!!!

Posted By: Arnab (Guest)  on March 31, 2010 at 09:09 AM

Justin,

I totally agree with your comment. The only problem is if these people aren't going to read your article, what makes you think they'll read your comment? Sadly, I'm sure almost all the comments made out of spite are ill-informed. As you said, they won't read the article. At most, they'll simply see the article title, look at your list without reading any reasons, and make assumptions. Just as people love to hear themselves talk instead of listen, they love seeing what they said instead of reading complete thoughts.

I confess that I get annoyed when reading a "Fact or Fiction" where an answer is not an informed opinion in the least. Surely a little extra pre-article communication can clear that up. But if it got to the point where I can no longer stand the article, I simply won't click it. I doubt anyone out there is being forced to read your or anyone else's articles.

In closing, thank you for your articles.

Hmm, whacky races with some bigger name Hanna Barbara characters thrown into the mix? Could that be LAFF-A-LYMPICS!!!

Thanks for the props on my comment last week.

For what it's worth, some of the negative comments in this particular article could've been spared if the column had been titled something along the lines of "Top 10 Animated Series That Could Have Better Games", since it applies to nearly half the list.

Posted By: the triple germans (Guest)  on March 31, 2010 at 12:14 PM

pretty good article some of these could use an updated game and or a game period. Most of them did get put out to try and capitalize on the popularity for the moment. Captain Planet was a rushed game to keep up with its popularity. Dexter's Lab was the same rushed to catch up with its popularity. Guess, its all dependant on if you are a huge fan that lets the little things/glitches go on a rushed game. Voltron I can't remember if it ever had a game but if you based the game off of the TV show in putting in the platforming, finding the keys, finding the different lions...that game would be huge on a current gen console.

I would LOVE a Thundercats game, I would buy 3 copies just in case I lost one

Posted By: ScottieD (Guest)  on March 31, 2010 at 12:58 PM

Thundercats dude... That is all.

Oh and to the "guest" who seems to have a problem with the writers in the game section, due to perceived age and or experience with games: I've been gaming for 26 years... How old are you? In my 26 years of gaming, I've come to know what I like in games. I've also come to know what types of games I don't like. I tend to stay away from genres that I don't care much for. It's as simple as that. I am always willing to try something new, but when I am paying $60+ for a damn game, pardon me for stickin with what I like.

For the record, can you say that you have played every single game ever created since the inception of video games? I bet you can't, so does that mean you are less qualified to read a gaming column than you initially thought?

HE-MAN ....Can't believe no-one has even metioned it!
You gotta go 80's for cartoon classics :
THUNDERCATS!!!
MASK!!!!
Centurions!!!

"Hmm, whacky races with some bigger name Hanna Barbara characters thrown into the mix? Could that be LAFF-A-LYMPICS!!!"

Yeah, I think Laff-A-Lympics would have been a good idea, though a racing game would be harder to screw up.

Let's see, cartoons.

How about the Centurions? That'd be pretty kick ass, actually. Depending on the level you'd be Ace, Jake or Max, and you'd be able to pick out which exo-suit or whatever they're called for the mission.

How about Dinosaucers? Fuckin' dinosaurs from space, fighting it out, that sounds kickass, too.

Though I remember it more for the toys than the cartoons, but how about a Dino Riders strategy game? Can you imagine two dinosaur-riding armies clashing?

I know it's had a game, I've got it, but I would mark out for a new Tick game.

I used to want a game based on the SonicAM cartoon, but judging from Sega's handling of Sonic over the years since, I don't think that'd be such a good idea, now.

I dunno, if I thought more, I'm sure I could go on. Those are the ones I thought of off the top of my head that I don't think there's been video games of.

GI JOE. HEMAN. Johnny Quest. Samuri Jack.

Posted By: DH (Guest)  on March 31, 2010 at 03:08 PM

Funny thing is, nobody of the game's writing staff is under 20 as far as I know.

The fact that you owned an older console and played some games doesnt mean that you are aware of EVERY single game that comes out or have played EVERY single game. That statement is ridicolous. Nobody gets to play every single game that comes out. NOBODY!

So yeah, apparently writing about games without having played every single friggin' old game automatically makes you a teenager. It's like "Game Column Time Machine" or something.

how about samurai jack as a game?

I was thinking ThunderCats too. Another one, Imo would be the cartoon with the policeman named Bulletproof. I can't think of the name right now.

I know this will probably be void when DC releases their online game soon, but I think Justice League Unlimited would have been fun. Heck, release one for the current Brave and the Bold toon.

Has there ever been a Johnny Quest or Space Ghost game?

Futurama?

I also vote for Heathcliff.

The Voltron control scheme sounds tricky, but cool. Forming a Blazing Sword would take some real teamwork.

Scooby Doo game also sounds fun. But in addition to the Globetrotters, we need Phyllis Diller and Sandy Duncan.

I totally agree with previous comments on Thundercats, Dinosaucers, and Laff-A-Lympics.

My suggestions: Silverhawks, Paw Paw Bears, A Pup Named Scooby Doo, Fantastic Max, and Denver the Last Dinosaur.

damn, I'm old.

Quite a few unnamed "Guests" don't seem to read the words of any article, so I would not sweat it too much. You handled it well in my book.

As for Avatar, I'd go old school RPG (Chrono Trigger style). The series screams for a quest style adventure with parties, items, powers, magic points, etc.... The older RPG style would make it great for WiiWare and could make it accessible to all ages.

Also in the "point and click adventure" world, I'd go with Danger Mouse! For the MMO style I'd go for the highly underrated EXOsquad. Now if I could just figure out what the heck to do with Love Hina I could fill my anime quota...

"Now if I could just figure out what the heck to do with Love Hina I could fill my anime quota.."

Go with Negima, it lends itself to video games better with all the magic and shit. Unless you want to go with a Love Hina dating sim, which there's a flash one out there that was fairly entertaining.

"Another one, Imo would be the cartoon with the policeman named Bulletproof. I can't think of the name right now."

That would be "Cops" or, if you followed it later, "Cyber Cops". The name change was to prevent confusion with the FOX reality series of the same name.

“I'm going to try to respond to this as calmly as I can.

IF YOU DIDN'T READ THE ARTICLE DON'T COMMENT!”

And I'm also going to try to respond to this as calmly as I can…

TAKE YOUR OWN ADVICE AND STOP READING THE COMMENTS IF THEY UPSET YOU TOO MUCH!!!

"The fact of the matter is that I did put time and effort into writing this column. If someone disagrees with my columns, that's great. I like disagreement, and I've genuinely enjoyed reading and responding to most reader comments."

The fact that you didn't even know there was an Avatar video game (on the Xbox 360 and PS2 no less) says otherwise!

"However, I will not tolerate people shitting all over my column when they didn't even bother to read it. “

You not tolerating people’s criticisms means you have an ego problem!

” I'm saying that for you, because I want you to remember it. If you see my name attached to any article I kindly ask you to not click on it, unless you are willing to take the time to read it (hell even skim it). I'm going to repeat this again. We work hard on these columns. Too hard to have people bitch about them without reading them.”

Victoria FREAKIN Jackson comes up with better material than you!

”To all other readers, I apologize for the rant. I've been really pleased with the responses I've been getting to my articles in the comments section. It's a great feeling to share your opinions with people, and have them read them and intelligently respond, even, and perhaps especially, when they have a differing opinion. Hopefully, you can understand my frustration.”

And I’m sorry that intelligent people like Guest#3944 have to deal with people like you!

@Jay, JP Prag, Armando Rodriguez and especially Todd Vote:

What's wrong? Jealous because you can't come up with anything intelligent like Guest#3944 has? Hey we can't all come up with intelligent stuff like Guest#3944 can! So get over it, all four of you! That's an order!
