Silicon Valley 10 & 1 7.21.10: Top 10 Marvel vs. Capcom Candidates
Posted by Justin Weinblatt on 07.21.2010
From Resident Evil's Leon Kennedy and Mega Man X to Street Fighter's Sagat and Final Fight's Mike Haggar, 411's Justin Weinblatt looks at the top ten candidates to be in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 in the latest edition of the Silicon Valley 10 & 1! Plus, Jessica Biel is your &1 Model of the Week!
Hello and welcome back to The Silicon Valley 10 & 1 by Justin Weinblatt. Last week we took a look at some internet memes. Check out the link below.
10. Fox: At least no one mentioned "Krystal can't enjoy her sandwich". Goodness gracious! I hate that disguisting meme that the corrupted furry fandom has made! They even made a song about it somewhere. Please, let it stop! It is a disgrace to Krystal's character and I don't know why would anyone do that.
At least "Do a Barrel Roll" is awesome, because it is actually official and originated from a game. The same goes for "Falcon Punch". I did not know these two helped you solved problems, though.
If you don't like the Krystal sandwich meme, simply Falcon Punch it off of the internet. Alternatively, you can do a barrel roll.
9. Dave: Your forgot the second part of the Leeroy meme. After his raid group wipes you hear him say "at least I have chicken." The figures even depict Leeroy with a chicken leg in his raised left hand. Supposedly he was getting his dinner while the rest of the raid was planning their strategy.
8. Torvald: 'm sorry. I hate video Game Memes. I hate when they're wiggled into columns. I especially hate when people say them verbally. There is nothing good about them. And that goes for all Meme's, not just the video game ones.
Lighten up man. Memes are generally inoffensive fun, and rarely will they impact your life in any significant way.
7. 420 nz: what about "Is this Battletoads?"
I wasn't aware of that meme till this comment. Fun stuff though. Tempted to call GameStop and ask them if I can preorder the new Battletoads.
6. Greg: I've seen some really nerdy things posted here, but this takes the cake. Who the hell actually says this shit?
This can't take the cake. The cake is a lie.
5. SHADE: But Master Chief is a pretty cool guy! He kills aliens and doesn't afraid of anything Master Chief is not a pretty cool guy. Halo on the other hand is a pretty cool guy. Eh kills aliens and doesn't afraid of anything.
4. Kedrix: Great column, one of the best I've read on here in a while. Lol'ed a lot :D
Glad you enjoyed it.
3. NYF: I like the idea of that "Pro Tip: Don't stare" t-shirt, but the execution of having a nine year old boy pose for the picture of it is a fail.
Yeah, I looked for a more buxom model, but that was the only pic I could find.
2. August: A couple of good suggestions here. FLAWLESS VICTORY! and FINISH HIM! can go in a hilarious amount of pictures. And "Im in ur base killin ur doods" should have been a top 3. It's probably the most popular meme in existence. Just check out Lolcats or something to see all the many ways it can be applied.
I wasn't sure whether or not to count "In ur base". It did start out as a video game meme, but it really only became popular once it got taken over by lolcats. It's like an unpopular movie with a really popular spin-off.
1. Guest: "I used all of my daddy's money to hire two old men to book my wrestling company, and they're running it into the ground. What should I do?"
DO A BARREL ROLL!
I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite joke on the page.
I'm Commander Sheppard, and this is my favorite comment on this article.
A few months ago, Marvel vs Capcom 3 was announced to be in development. I wanted to do a top ten list based on the upcoming game, but due to the abundance of comic book based content on the site (this was also around the time of Iron Man 2), I decided to post a sort of joke column instead. Now that things have died down a bit, it's time for the top ten characters that should be in Marvel vs Capcom 3. With such a huge number of candidates, we'll do this in two halves. This week, lets take a look at Capcom's lineup. To keep things fresh, I'll only include characters that have not been in any vs game, from X-men vs Street Fighter all the way through Tatsunoko vs Capcom.
Top 10 Marvel vs Capcom 3 Candidates
And now...The LIST!
Honorable Mention: Amaterasu- I actually own Okami, but it is in my massive pile of games I bought and haven't gotten around to playing yet. Sadly, this will keep Amaterasu off of this list.
10. Mike Haggar
Mike Haggar is a pro-wrestler/mayor/total bad ass. He's the mayor of Metro City, which is a lot like Detroit, but with slightly less crime. While most politicians fight crime from the safety of their office, Mike Haggar has a more hands on approach. With the help of two buddies, Haggar sets off to piledrive every villain in his fair city.
Mike Haggar is the prototypical big and slow grappler, which make his chances of getting in next to nothing. Unfortunately for Haggar, his niche is already filled by Zangief, who has been in all of the vs games, except Tatsunoko. Hopefully, Capcom will give the Red Cyclone a break, and give the mayor a chance to shine. Move over, and behold the true creator of the spinning clothesline.
9. Mask De Smith
Killer 7 revolves around the exploits of a group of assassins, known collectively as Killer 7. The group has varied members, each of whom would make great additions to the Marvel vs Capcom cast.
My favorite of the assassins is Harman Smith, but he's in a wheelchair, so that probably wouldn't work out too well. We'll have to go with Mask de Smith. While Mask De Smith is not my favorite of the assassins, he's the one who would fit in best in the fighting game genre. As a Mexican wrestler, it would be easy to craft a moveset for the guy, and his grenade launchers would make for great super combos.
Then again, maybe we don't have to settle for one assassin. Perhaps Garcian could switch between various personalities in battle? At any rate, low sales and slim chances for a sequel will probably prevent Killer 7 from getting any MvC love. But a man can dream… a man can dream…
8. Sagat
I didn't want to include too many Street Fighter 2 characters, so I had to make a tough decision. Of the original 16 warriors (this is including the Super characters) only Ryu, Ken, Dhalsim, Cammy, Zangief, Chun-Li, Bison, and Guile have made it into the vs series. This leaves us with a ton of potential candidates. After narrowing it down, I was left with a tough decision between Blanka and Sagat.
As much as I love Blanka, he's not an integral part of the series like Sagat is. Sagat was the boss of the very first Street Fighter game, and his showdown with Ryu is an iconic part of the game's lore. It would be great to reenact this epic battle in Marvel vs Capcom's over the top style.
7. Oro
Last Street Fighter, I promise. I had to show Street Fighter 3 some love, since Capcom barely acknowledges this game's existence. In the various crossover games (including Capcom vs SNK) there is only one Street Fighter 3 character represented (Alex in Tatsunoko). This oversight must be rectified!!!
I recommend Oro to represent the series, because Oro is badass. Oro is so badass that he had to seal off one of his arms, just so he could have a decent fight. Even with one arm he still smacked Ryu around like a little bitch. Plus, the dude is like 140. That's right, he's a one armed, 140 year old dude, who smacks Ryu around. How could you not put him in this game?
6. Protoman
Poor Protoman. It must be hard being trapped in your little brother's shadow. Protoman tries so hard to be cool with his shades, his shield, and his badass aloof whistling. Still, it's Mega Man defeating giant dragons, Mega Man saving the day, and Mega Man getting all da bitches. Mega Man even got invited to Marvel vs Capcom 2, the hottest party of the last decade, while Protoman stayed home, singing the Blues.
Throw the guy a bone Capcom. Protoman's trademark shield can differentiate him from whatever version of Mega Man gets into MvC 3. Plus, putting Mega Man, Roll, and Protoman on a team would be all kinds of awesome.
5. Falcon
Once upon a time, Capcom released one of the best, most innovative, most fun fighting games of all time for the Sega Dreamcast. Unfortunately, when the Dreamcast died, Power Stone died with it. Aside from a PSP port, Power Stone has laid dormant for many years. While Power Stone may have been forgotten by Capcom, true gamers keep the flame lit in their hearts. Hopefully, one of the game's colorful cast members will make it into Marvel vs Capcom 3.
I chose Falcon because he's the Ryu of Powerstone. He's not the most interesting character, and he's not the most fun to play as, but for better or worse he is the face of Powerstone. Falcon showing up in MvC3 would give fans a small glimmer of hope that one day Power Stone will return. And hope is all we have…
4. Hunter (Monster Hunter)
Monster Hunter hasn't caught on in America or Europe yet, but it's crazy popular in Japan. It's one of Capcom's most successful franchises, so it only makes sense that a character from the series should find its way into Capcom's fighting extravaganza.
When it comes to choosing a character to represent the series, there is only one choice. Monster Hunter contains one playable character, and a thousand useless NPCs. The one playable character is the titular hunter, who uses his mighty bronze age/prehistoric technology to slay giant monsters. The Hunter would most likely fill the Jill Valentine niche, by attacking using a variety of monsters. What could be better than summoning a giant sea dragon to swallow your enemies whole?
3. Leon Kennedy (Resident Evil)
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the President…'s daughter? Leon Kennedy is. Oh sure, the President could have sent a small army, but you know what's better than a small army? Leon freaking Kennedy. He can roundhouse kick your fucking head off. He can suplex your fucking head off. Plus his hair is perfect no matter what. On top of all that, he's the star of all the best Resident Evil games. So why does the roided out freak Chris Redfield get to be in MvC3? Fuck that guy. If Chris is in this game and Leon isn't, we riot.
2. Phoenix Wright (Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney)
Phoenix Wright is one of the most surprising success stories of this console generation. The series started out on the GBA over in Japan, but Capcom didn't think the game would sell well to Western audiences. It's hard to blame them. The game has a very Japanese style, tons of references to Japanese culture, and is an adventure game, a genre that wasn't very popular at the time. The game was eventually released in the US, with a very small amount of cartridges produced. It wasn't long before they sold out, and the series was soon a hit among the gaming community. The next step for the franchise is a representative in MvC3.
Phoenix is a lawyer, which doesn't lend itself well to a fighting game, but I'm sure Capcom is up to the challenge. The vs series has always had a number of offbeat characters. Saki comes from a quiz/dating game series, Servebot is a generic minion, and Sentinel is a 30+ foot tall robot. If these guys could be shoved into a fighting game, Phoenix should be able to make it in.
1. X (Mega Man X)
X must be feeling pretty shitty right about now. I mean, it's understandable that the original Mega Man made it into the Marvel vs Capcom before him. But the Mega Man from Mega Man Legends? Tron Bonne? Hell, even Servebot got into the series before him. The final slap in the face was Zero getting into Tatsunoko vs Capcom. Mega Man X was beaten by his own sidekick.
Marvel vs Capcom 3 needs a Mega Man. We've already seen Mega Man Classic, and Mega Man Volnutt, so that leaves us with Mega Man X, Mega Man ZX, Mega Man Exe, or whatever version of Mega Man is in Star Force. With losers like that as his competition, you have to like Mega Man X's chances. X's size and style would probably be a better fit for the game than Mega Man's anime inspired look and diminutive height, and he has a ton of abilities to draw from throughout his series. X would be a fantastic addition to the cast of Marvel vs Capcom 3.
Those are my top 10 Capcom Candidates for Marvel vs Capcom 3. Capcom has a ton of games to draw from, so I'm sure there are many characters that I missed. Feel free to point out any omissions.
I was running a little late, so I went to Chickepedia and clicked on the random chick button. Jessica Biel came up. No complaints here.
Well, that about sums it up for this week's Silicon Valley. Keep an eye out for me on 411, and be sure to check out 411 on Twitter.
Albert Wesker would be top of my list with Haggar. Wesker's got the ability to take on the strongest from both worlds and Haggar needs to be in a fighting game with Zangief for once.

ow, why oh why won't they make a power stone 3. Wang Tang was the best power stone character closely followed by Valgas. A new rival schools game would also be sweet.

I disagree with the Leon Kennedy opinion you have there, as I feel pretty good with Chris in MvsC3. Aside from that, Falcon and Megaman X would be FANTASTIC for the game. Power Stone and the X series should be shown some more love.

No love for Rival Schools? I think a couple of them (or maybe just Kyosuke) made it into Capcom vs SNK... I'd like seeing the baseball, soccer and volleyball kids (I can't think of their names at the moment) make it into MvC3... I also hope SonSon makes a return, she was my favorite in MvC2. Actually, I'll be dissapointed if anyone from 2 doesn't return, and especially if there's less characters than were in 2.

Phoenix Wright vs. Deadpool is all
I need to live a happy life. Maybe throw in Travis Touchdown in there and I'll be in heaven.

what they need is a dc vs marvel game

Thor. How did he not appear in any of Capcom's previous marvel games I'll never know.
Ultron. He's the Marvel Universes best killer robot. Give him a super where he brifily becomes invulnerable, and he'll be perfect.
Cosmo. Okay, not a well know charecter, but this Guardians of the Galaxy cast member would nicely fill in the odd charecter for the marvel side well. He's a talking russian cosmonaut dog with psychic powers, and that is awesome.
