Four Player Co-Op 07.27.10: Kinect, Curt Schilling, & Marvel vs Capcom 3
Posted by Stephen Randle on 07.27.2010
Did Boba Fett or space combat make for bigger Star Wars news? Is $150 the right price for Kinect? Should the Fantastic Four be in Marvel vs Capcom 3? The 411 Staff answers these questions and more in Four-Player Co-Op!

Player Four didn't want to be the Invisible Woman
Quizmaster
Greetings, and welcome to another edition of Four Player Co-op. I am the Quizmaster, I provide topics for argument and sit in judgment of the answers of the 411 Staff. Then I pick a winner completely unrelated to any points I they may have accumulated. This week, we have the Fantastic Four…well, we were supposed to. But we persevere. Start the game!
QUESTION ONE: Well, the word is official, and Kinect (bundled with a motion control game) will run you a cool 150 bucks. Let's answer this 3 Bears style: too much, too little, or just right?
Todd Vote
Three bears style huh? How about this:
That sums up my feelings about the price point and Kinect in general since E3 2010.
Josh Boykin
Uh, too much. Not because the equipment isn't "properly priced;" I mean, $150 is going to sell the device to people who are hooked on the idea of having their "Kinectimals" for their 7-year old children. But $200/250 was the entry point (plus peripherals) for the Wii, the system that brought in the casual gamers Microsoft's obviously gunning for. 360 owners already paid that price (or more) before motion sensitivity even became an option. Comparing Kinect's price to Rock Band peripherals doesn't make any sense; Rock Band peripherals are tangible, life-size devices that people hold. $150 for a camera? A bit much.
Trace Aber
Just Right - I wouldn't pay anything more than $100 for this, assuming it would work right in my small room. And had good games. Though, from all accounts, this is pretty similar to what it costs them to make the thing, and adding the game for "free" will entice people on the fence. I'm just not sold on motion technology (as the next big thing, anyways), and really hope Kinect dies a quick, albeit painful, death.
Quizmaster
Tech costs be damned, when you can buy a Wii brand-new for 50 bucks more than Kinect, the price is too damned high. Boykin has the right idea, so 150 points for him.
QUESTION TWO: Curt Schilling (yes, that Curt Schilling) has founded a game company with Todd MacFarlane and R.A. Salvatore and they're set to deliver their first game, Kingdoms of Amaleur: Reckoning, in the near future. What are the chances of it being awesome?
Todd Vote
I was all ready to write it off till the end of the trailer. The glowing mystical Baraka blades, and the giant McFarlane monster at the end changed my mind a bit. The game has a solid staff behind it, and the trailer, while more than likely rendered graphics, and not gameplay looks like it could be interesting. I'll reserve judgment till I see more, but the potential for awesome right now is at a cool 62%.
Josh Boykin
Uh, I still feel like I looked up the wrong Curt Schilling...you mean the ex-baseball player? The one who was thinking of running under a conservative Republican ticket? I dunno what I think...the creativity is there with MacFarlane and Salvatore backing it up, but we've seen plenty of comic and book conversions fall on their face. I'd love an open-world RPG with God of War-style action, though, as long as the character creation was still as robust as other open-world RPGs.
Trace Aber
Unlikely to moderate. They seem like they have an experienced team on their side and some really big plans in mind, which usually means disaster. But, seeing as how some of the employees were already working on a similar project, perhaps it could work out. Though I'm not sure if having a 10,000 year history for a game is a good idea for your first project. I'd rather them start with some more reasonable projects before trying to sell me the next epic.
Quizmaster
Boykin loses some man points for not immediately knowing who Curt Schilling is, but no in-game points because hey, some people just don't like baseball. We call them heathens. I'd say you could do worse than a fantasy game backed by a decent fantasy writer and a guy responsible for some of the most fantastic graphic art of the last twenty years (and also one of the weirdest NHL logos ever), so we'll give Todd 392 points to Todd.
QUESTION THREE: Bigger Star Wars game-related news of the past week, from your perspective: Boba Fett to be a part of The Force Unleashed 2, or the inclusion of personal spaceships and space combat in The Old Republic?
Todd Vote
Fett in the Force Unleashed 2 is the bigger news for me. Simply because I am a hell of a lot more likely to play FU2 than I am the Old Republic. It's 3rd person action vs. RPG in this question. While personal ships might seem like a big deal, it all comes down to your game preference on which will be the bigger deal for gamers. I prefer action games, so the Fett-man is the bigger news, easily.
Josh Boykin
Any TOR news is fantastic news. Sure, it's interesting that Fett's going to be in Force Unleashed 2, but there's a lot more game-expanding potential with personal spaceships and space combat in The Old Republic than a single bounty hunter could ever offer a game. I just can't wait to look over my shoulder and say "Never tell me the odds!" That, or "Great shot, kid; don't get penis-y."
Trace Aber
Boba Fett in SW: TFU2, only because I see that making more money than personal spaceships. Don't get me wrong, the idea of a personal spaceship is appealing, but I'm also tired of being told everything in my virtual world is "personal" when everyone else playing has nearly the exact same thing since it's all based off the same equipment. At least with Boba Fett they're being honest about it - nothing personal, just a new character.
Quizmaster
Well, since personal space battles are all I'll hear about for the next week or so once my friend finds out (along with laments for why the game isn't out yet), anyone who answered that gets 238 points.
QUESTION FOUR: So, Super Skrull, Thor, and Amaterasu (the wolf from Okami) are in Marvel vs Capcom 3, but the Fantastic Four still are not. Disappointed that you won't be able to shout "It's Clobberin' Time" in an appropriate context yet again?
Todd Vote
Not really, The Fantastic Four are not all that for me. Deadpool is in there, Thor is in there, and Chris Redfield is in there. What more could you ask for? Could it be that Activision has the rights to the FF games that is keeping them out of MVC?
Josh Boykin
I can't lie; there's not a whole lot that lacking the FF will really do to stunt my MvC 3 experience (by the way, Fight for Two Worlds = FTW = TOTALLY AWESOME.). There's going to be tons of fan service on both sides of the coin, but they can't fit everything in...I'd love to see Dusk, Hornet, or Ricochet in the game (of the 4 Spiderhunt/Slingers characters, Prodigy's definitely my least favorite), but I'm guessing that's not going to happen. It's not going to stop the game from being completely badass, though.
Trace Aber
First off, I can only think of a few instances where I've said "It's clobberin' time!" in an appropriate context. It's pretty disappointing though, as clearly this is something fans have been asking for and it's something they keep disappointing us with. It's not a make or break decision by any means, but why not include them? Granted, I don't know much about the legal side of the issue, but, damn, just include them.
Quizmaster
Seriously, they couldn't at least put Thing in? I mean, the other three I could live without, but give me the ever-lovin' Thing. Plus, it's an easy way to expand the roster by four. I had not considered legal issues, so as we do for everything, we'll blame Activision, award Todd 150 points, and move on with our lives.
BONUS QUESTION: Well, with all eyes on SDCC anyway, we should probably talk about something comic-related. So start talking.
Todd Vote
Wait? Was that a question? Batman:Under the Red Hood releases today (27th). I'm looking forward to seeing the animated feature. How's that? Does that work?
Josh Boykin
Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 is an awesome comic from a couple years ago. Read it if you get the chance. That's pretty much all I know about comics recently...too expensive for my gaming-tailored budget. Seriously though, I never knew how many great comic publishers are out there that AREN'T Marvel or DC...they're worth looking in to if you get the time. And cash.
Trace Aber
Truth be told - I'm not a huge comic book fan. I've tried to get into them, never did. None of my friends are that big into comic books either, from what I can tell. I do enjoy checking out the occasional movie or playing a game here and there, but I tend to stay away from the comic book world, if only because it doesn't interest me. Though, I do have to admit, it's created some of the most unique characters and I can understand why people love them so much.

PLAYER 3 WINS
IT'S ALWAYS CLOBBERIN' TIME
COME BACK NEXT WEEK TO TRY AGAIN
1. Too much, wasn't intending on buying it anyway.
2. Story might be good, but I'm not really expecting much from the gameplay
3. The Old Republic without a doubt. Everything Bioware does just seems to be great, and the original Force Unleashed was a hugely disappointing heap of shit. I they want to make a third person action game from the franchise I'd rather they revived the old Jedi Knight series or do something in a similar mold
4. Thing is cool, but I never really got into the Fantastic 4, there were always far cooler superheroes than them.

The Fantastic Four are overdue for an appearance in a GOOD videogame. Unfortunately, I don't see any of them making it into MvC3.
Personally, I'd like to see Ronan the Accuser and Nova in there so that they can be teamed in a fashion similar to the Anihilation storyline.

Why is Boba Fett so popular? Wasn't he just a bit character? Did I miss something?
I understand he is a god to geeks around the world.
But why?

Fett might not have been a prominent character in the films, but there was just a certain aura about him that seemed really cool. For example, he has a go at Vader for wanting to put Han Solo in carbonite which could kill him and leave fett out of pocket. Vader would put anyone in their place for daring to challenge him on such a matter, but in Fett's case he actually tries to keep him happy, which pretty much shows that fett is definitely not a man to be messed with.

$150 is way too much for something that's only going to work with one game. Oh wait that's why Rock Band wouldn't sell...
