411 Games Fact or Fiction 03.01.11 Skyrim, Minecraft, Medal of Honor and More
Posted by Adam Larck on 03.01.2011

Welcome back to another week of 411 Games Fact or Fiction. I'm Adam Larck, and I've been playing the over-the-top violent game, Bulletstorm. I also am working on Torchlight for XBLA, so look for a review on that in the upcoming week.

This week we have last second fill-in Dan Watson going up against Jordan Williams. Let's see how we'll these two will get along. Time for banner!

1.) The new Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim trailer looks impressive.

Dan Watson - Fact: Without a doubt this game has everything I look for in an Action RPG game. It has the large landscapes, amazing enemies, and multiple classes. This trailer got me excited for 11.11.11. If I still had the game, I would go back and play Oblivion just get back in the hang of things. Fallout: New Vegas will have to do for now, though.

Jordan Williams - Fact: Hell fucking yes it does. It's been a good long while since we have had not only a new Elder Scrolls game but a new game out of Bethesda with a new and improved engine. If they can keep the news rolling out for this game and make sure ALL of it looks as impressive as it does in the trailer, then it spells good things for that game.

Score: 1 for 1 - This game can't come quick enough, in my opinion.

2.) You'll pick up the Medal of Honor sequel.

Dan Watson - Fiction: That is a big fiction there. The story was okay in the most recent one but I am all war gamed out. Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Medal of Honor this past year in addition to Halo and a large amount of FPS games; I just don't want to go back to war. If there was an original aspect to the game, like Bulletstorm, I would jump on it. Call of Duty even realizes that the real life war is going out the window, so now we go to space. I just can't get into too many more war games like this.

Jordan Williams - Fiction: Nope. EA only makes one military/modern shooter I like and this one is not it. I didn't pick up the first Medal of Honor game because Bad Company 2 gave me all I wanted and this time it looks like Battlefield 3 will scratch that itch again. I am interested to see if they learn from any of the mistakes they made in the first MoH game...and if they don't get completely bent over by Modern Warfare 3.

Score: 2 for 2 - The first game was decent, but I don't think I'll be checking this game out unless they change something to make it stand out.

3.) Minecraft on iPad will be as big as a hit as it is on PC.

Dan Watson - Fiction: iPad gaming is more about fun little mini games as far as I know. I don't own an iPad but I have played a few games and most of them aren't anything that intricate or special. I may be wrong because of my lack of knowledge in the iPad, if anyone would like to fund my research in iPad gaming I am accepting donations.

Jordan Williams - Fiction: Although the way Minecraft ended up being a hit on PC is very close to how iOS games end up being hits...I just don't see Minecraft translating well enough to the iOS. What would iOS offer that the PC can't in terms of building or creating things? Let's also point out that the original version of the game isn't even complete yet. So no, I don't see it becoming a big hit...especially since that means people will actually have to build all of their creations themselves instead of using the editor.

Score: 3 for 3 - I'm not too sure. All I know is that I still don't understand the purpose of the game.

4.) Vietnam will be successful with banning online gaming at night.

Jordan Williams - Fiction: The way the question is asked, I will have to say FICTION, but if it was "COULD" Vietnam be successful with banning online gaming at night, I'd say it's a definite fact. We just witnessed a pretty developed country cut off the internet. PERIOD. So being able to shut it off for 8 ours a day for online gaming is definitely not outside of the realm of possibility. I just don't think it would succeed only because it seems like Vietnam has bigger fish to fry other than making sure that people aren't on WoW until the wee hours of the morning.

Dan Watson - Fiction: This is more fiction in the wording of the question. Vietnam may be successful in blocking ONLINE gaming but not successful in blocking gaming overnight. Once you take away online gaming after 10 p.m., most people will just switch to single player fun until the next day. With the way the world is going, I would not be surprised if the Vietnam government does block Online gaming after 10 p.m. until 8 a.m.

Score: 4 for 4 - I hope that the government changes their mind about doing this.

5.) You're impressed with the North American 3DS launch titles.

Jordan Williams - Fiction: I want the 3DS and I will probably end up getting one at launch but this is a pretty piss poor launch line up. Out of that list the ONLY game I care about is Super Street Fighter IV and even that is just because I want a portable version besides the iPhone one. Nintendo showed off all of it's third party support at E3 for the 3DS but so far none of it is going to be around at launch outside of what looks like to be the standard shovelware we saw on the DS's launch. I know Zelda and Kid Icarus are in the 'launch window' but that shit should've been out on Day 1.

Dan Watson - Fiction: Except for 1 game, Pilotwings, I would not be interested in this console. I will not be picking up the 3DS ever. I hate the concept of 3D. My brother has a 3D television and guess what I hate it. I have never enjoyed the idea of 3D, I love 2D. Each of the games on this list are just available on consoles except Pilotwings basically.

Score: 5 for 5 - I'm still surprised they aren't trying to put a Zelda or Mario title with the release.

6.) You're intrigued that Supremacy MMA is including female fighters.

Jordan Williams - Fiction: I never even heard of Supremacy MMA before this question. So...nope. It's cool that female MMA fighters are getting some recognition...but I don't think that this is going to get anyone to find out about the game.

Dan Watson - Fact: The big intrigue is will I be able to be a male fighter and fight a female? How soon will the media jump on this, if that scenario is possible, as promoting domestic violence against women? I am quite intrigued by the game to begin with and can only see this as great publicity for the game.

Score: 4 for 6 - It's good to see the game representing both sides, but I wonder if the female fighters will be able to take on the men.

Bonus Question.) Two part question. Sony really is making a "hack-proof" PS3, and it truly will be "hack-proof."

Jordan Williams - Fact, Fiction: Sony is of course going to make what they see as a hack-proof system. Pretty much everyone who makes technology makes it 'hack-proof' unless they intend for it to be open source. So to see them try to do this is not a shocker. What's going to be shocking is if they can actually keep it from being hack proof...because they won't. Everything can and will be hacked by the simple virtue of that it HAS to be hacked in the first place to make it hack proof. Someone has to go in and find every security loophole and bad programming to begin with just to HOPE that someone doesn't find another. So in this age of leaking data and copyright infringement there is no way in HELL someone is going to make something hack-proof when all it takes is either a very bored/skilled/driven programmer some time OR a very bitter one to leak it. In my opinion the hardware are not what needs to be make hack-proof, it's the software. But obviously no one knows how to do either yet.

Dan Watson - Fact, Fiction: Sony is probably wasting resources creating what they believe is a hack-proof PS3 or PS4 unit. However, this system will be hacked faster than any previous system as Sony just issued a challenge to ever hacker in the world asking them to go ahead and try to hack our system. I am not sure how to even begin to hack a system but am sure that there is no definite way to make a console that is hack-proof. Wouldn't this technology be better suited outside the gaming world, maybe in government offices, military information, etc.?

Adam Larck - Fact, Fiction: Sure, I can see Sony trying to make a PS3 that can't be hacked, and I can even see it on sale by the time E3 rolls around. However, as for it being hack-proof? Not a chance. People will take it as a challenge, and someone will eventually break into it, just as the current PS3 was broken into.

The pair goes 4-for-6 this week. What do you think? Agree or disagree with their answers? Let us know. See you in seven!

"I hate the concept of 3D"

Adam, the score this week is actually 5 for 6. You might want to fix that up.

If it's fully hack proof I don't think it will sell well at all. In this day and age, a certain level of piracy creates a buzz, it lets people spread the word of a good game.

Bootlegging movies is similar to this. There is a certain level that corresponds to popular movies. When there is zero bootlegging of a film that movie does very poorly. When there is too much the sales are impacted too because the bootleg is so good and so easy to find.

But there is a little Red Riding Hood "just right" level to go for. Make it hard enough to hack but possible enough that only a very small minority have it hacked. This minority then is free advertising and gets other people to buy the games.

If the games are good, most people buy the games. Companies constantly whine about hacking for PC games, yet Bethesda and Blizzard kill everyone else for PC sales. Bioware also isn't hurting and keeps making PC games. Why? Is it because they make unhackable games? Nope, in fact, when Bioware tried that they had their worst sales and everyone hacked their stuff. It's because they make good games with unintrusive hack protection. And they also know to price to the market. Steam curbs piracy yet gamers never complain. Why? Because it's a platform that actually delivers and is unintrusive anti-piracy. Steam also has sales on games and gives you a good price!

How is it Blizzard can keep breaking records? Good games!!!!

Piracy is an excuse used by companies that give poor products and service and can't compete with the better and more popular companies. The Wii and DS is hacked to hell and back but they destroy everyone else. The 360 is hacked more than the PS3 as well, all you need to do is flash the 360, I believe you need a chip or something for PS3. Sony has usually needed chips to modify their consoles whereas the other companies usually didn't, so were easier to hack.

Someone will just make another chip for PS3, probably within a few months of the "unhackable" console being released.

I will be buying a PS3 soon probably because my Xbox red-ringed and there are a few games coming on console that aren't going to PC. I will check the reviews first and see if it doesn't eat discs or have some major problems. Since I will only buy about 3 games I have no incentive to hack it, I just don't want it preventing me from being able to play what I bought.

laughing out loud at Guest#8312 07:22

as for the 3D matter, I can't see it well, because of my lazy right eye. I also have a hard time catching stuff, etc.

@ Jordan Williams:

"this is a pretty piss poor launch line up."

I'm just curious, which consoles do you think had good launch line-ups? Because as far as I can tell, the 3DS has one of the best launch line-ups ever. There are two awesome Nintendo games at launch (three if you like Nintendogs) and a really solid list of third party titles, plus all the pre-installed games and Virtual Console games (Super Mario Land and Link's Awakening at launch!). I can't think of any other console launch that had more than two good games in total, let alone from one company.

I also think calling it 'the standard shovelware we saw on the DS's launch' is really unfair. One of the games on the list is a new strategy game from the creator of X-Com: UFO Defence. Pro Evolution Soccer, Ridge Racer and LEGO Star Wars are all very good franchises (overall), and the new instalments look to be the best yet. The 3DS is getting some real hardcore games with real gameplay (and not all of them are ports) that could take weeks or months to complete, which is a hell of a lot better than a DS launch that had Super Mario 64 and about five gimmicky touch-screen titles that got boring after five minutes, and NOTHING else.

I understand that everyone has different opinions and I'm not trying to argue that your taste in games is wrong or anything like that. However, after seeing some of the rubbish console launches over the past couple of decades, I can't see how the 3DS launch couldn't be considered a step forward. I also think that there's a big difference between saying 'I don't like any of these games' (a perfectly legitimate opinion) and 'these games are DS-grade shovelware' (a completely unfair and untrue statement).
