411 Games Fact or Fiction 03.29.11 Duke Nukem Forever, Australia, Torchlight and More
Posted by Adam Larck on 03.29.2011
Was Bioshock wise to leave BioShock Infinite without Move support? Is it a surprise that Duke Nukem Forever has been delayed again? Will Australia get an adult game rating? 411’s Jeffrey Harris and Mark Salmela debate these questions and more in this week’s 411 Fact or Fiction: Games!
Welcome back to another week of 411 Games Fact or Fiction. I'm Adam Larck, and I've finished up Dragon Age II. Now, I've set my sights on a few DS reviews, namely Pokemon Black and Okamiden. Look for reviews of those in the upcoming weeks.
This week we have Jeffrey Harris going up against Mark Salmela. It's the first time these two have met since I took over. Let's see how these two do. Time for banner!
1.) It's no surprise that Duke Nukem Forever has seen another delay.
Jeffrey Harris - Fiction: Almost nothing surprises me anymore. This game is the king of delays so much so that it has almost become a joke and parody of sorts. It seems somewhat fitting that the game has been delayed again despite the big renewed push and promise. I think the game will come out but this delay is no surprise.
Mark Salmela - Fiction: I'm not going to lie, I thought it was actually coming out on May 3rd. After all this time I believed Gearbox that it was going to finally ship in May. I'm not upset. May is a pretty packed month as it is, and it's only a one month delay, but I actually thought all the delays were over. Oh well…
Score: 1 for 1 - After all this game has been through, it almost feels right for one more delay.
2.) Duke Nukem Forever's Capture the Babe mode will stir controversy for slapping a babe on the butt.
Jeffrey Harris - Fiction: This is pretty tame compared to what we have seen come out of games in the past 10 years in the form of female exploitation. It's not like Duke Nukem is a stranger to such material. In previous games he was going through strip joints and rescuing strippers or encountering adult movie theaters. Also, if its good for John Barrymore in the 1932 classic, Grand Hotel, it's good for Duke Nukem.
Mark Salmela - Fiction: There are a lot of things that are going to stir controversy about Duke Nukem, but I don't think it'll be because Duke slaps a girl on the ass. The whole blowjob thing? Maybe. Two girls making out with each other? Possibly. A slap on the ass? Nah.
Score: 2 for 2 - I'm just waiting until Fox News gets their hands on this.
3.) Australia will succeed in getting an R18+ game rating.
Jeffrey Harris - Fact: It seems the government supports it and the times and changing and evolving. I'm not familiar with Australia law or ratings, but since it does seem to have some strong support for the change, I guess it will happen. I see no reason why not at this point.
Mark Salmela - Fact: I hope they do. It's ridiculous that games like Mortal Kombat may simply not be sold in Australia because they won't implement an R18+ game rating. Come on Australia, get with the times.
Score: 3 for 3 - I really hope so. It seems disappointing that they miss out on so many games because of the rating system.
4.) It's a good move by Irrational Games to not include Move Support with BioShock Infinite.
Mark Salmela - Fact: I don't hide the fact that I hate motion controls. I hate the Wii and I don't like PlayStation Move. I own PS Move, but there's not a whole lot I'd recommend for it. I still don't see a reason someone should go out and buy one. BioShock Infinite doesn't need Move support. I want the best possible game and I want to play it the best possible way on a console, and that's with analog sticks.
Jeffrey Harris - Fact: They shouldn't force or integrate a gimmick they don't really see the need for and don't want. PS Move was a poor gimmick and way to attempt to mimic the success of the Wii while I also feel missing the point completely. I don't feel the BioShock series is one that compliments or requires Move support. It doesn't need it. Developers should not be forced into using such a cheap and pointless gimmick if they don't want to.
Score: 4 for 4 - I honestly think more developers should do this route instead of throwing something in at the last second.
5.) George "Geohot" Hotz is really hiding in South America to avoid Sony.
Mark Salmela - Fact: To be honest who really cares? I don't see what the big deal is about trying to find this guy. There are plenty of other hackers Sony could go after if they really wanted to. I don't care where this guy is hiding if he is at all.
Jeffrey Harris - Fact: His "legal counsel" admittedthat Hotz is in South America. Are we honestly supposed to believe he went there to "go on vacation and visit a friend?" No, he fled the country just like Roman Polanski. If you did nothing wrong Hotz, face the music and stand by what you did. If what you did was legal and just, you and your lawyer should prove it. Don't kick a hornet's nest and run away. Face the consequences. That Hotz has fled is proof of his guilt. That's your smoking gun right there.
Score: 5 for 5 - This case just seems to be getting weirder, especially if this is true.
6.) The Torchlight MMO will get more players by not charging a subscription.
Mark Salmela - Fact: I don't see why they wouldn't. Free to play seems to be a pretty popular business model. It works well for
Facebook games. Sony makes a ridiculous amount of money off PlayStation Home. I think this will end up being a smart move for a Torchlight MMO.
Jeffrey Harris - Fact: Well since there is no pay subscription I definitely think it will. But whether the model will actually be successfulor not remains to be seen. But that they are not charging for a subscription definitely appears to be getting a positive buzz. And at least it's something different than what the competition is doing, specifically Blizzard with World of Warcraft. It's a bold move, but one that I support going forward.
Score: 6 for 6 - This game already had my interest, but even more so now that it will be free-to-play.
Bonus Question.) With Capcom revealing that two Resident Evil games are getting HD remakes, what game from the last generation do you want to see get a remake.
Mark Salmela - Metal Gear Solid 3:This is a hard one for me. Since Shadow of the Colossus and the God of War games are already/have already gotten HD remakes, I'm not quite sure. There are plenty of games I would like to see in HD, but if I had to pick just one I guess it'd be Metal Gear Solid 3. I love that game and I'd love to play it again with new HD graphics. But to be honest most of the games I'd like to see given the HD treatment are from the PS1/N64/Saturn era.
Jeffrey Harris - Star Wars: Shadow of the Empire: This is my favorite Star Wars game of all time. It's also one of my favorite N64 games ever. I loved what you could do with this game. You could use a jetpack. You got to fight the AT AT's in the battle of Hoth. You got to fight Boba Fett and the Slave One. This was like the perfect Star Wars game and IMHO still better than the newer ones that have come out as of late. So re-do it in HD. Add some Luke Skywalker levels so you can use a lightsaber and add an online battle arena mode similar to Jedi Knight. There you go.
Adam Larck - Final Fantasy X: Hey, if we can't get a Final Fantasy VII sequel, why not try for a remake of this one. X already looked impressive on the PS2, but I want to see what an HD polish could do on it. Plus, it would give me another reason to get back into the game, which I enjoyed for quite a while.
The pair goes perfect this week, getting a 6-of-6. What do you think? Agree or disagree with their answers? Let us know. See you in seven!
HAHAHAHA Jeff answered the first question wrong. It asks if it's NO surprised. You summarized FACT.

Isn't metal gear solid 3 getting a remake on 3ds? The question doesn't ask if it's to be in hd

Here's a game I'd love to see get modernized that no one even really gets into: Final Fantasy VI/III (US). I know it's been rereleased for the PS & The DS/GBA, but they kept it in the original format & not doing a new overhaul of it

"That Hotz has fled is proof of his
guilt. That's your smoking gun right there."
You really think he'll get a fair trial against Sony's team of Voltron lawyers? Riiiiiight...

Remake KOTOR 1&2 - this time with 2 being fully finished.

The campaign for an R18+ rating here in Oz may have been hurt today, with some jackass who is up on murder charges claiming he commited the murder of a young girl after a night of "booze and violent video games".

"No, he fled the country just like Roman Polanski"
Yes, because the two situations are exactly the fucking same. Idiot.

most ps2 games can be played on pc in hd, but my real point is that these games arent really remakes at all. They just up the rendering resolution and resell it. Damn you sony removing backwards compatibility!

Speaking of HD quality has anyone played Dynasty Warriors 7? I about threw my controler at the TV. Holy Shit DW 2 had better graphics. How could they screw something up so bad

I have to agree with Victor Law. Fact or Fiction went 5 for 6 this week.

When was the last time a game wasn't delayed?

On the subject of HD remakes, I think Sony could have had themselves a nice seller for the Move if they brought back Bushido Blade.
