Working Title 06.24.2011: Why the Bad Press
Posted by Dan Watson on 06.24.2011

Welcome to the #1 Column to think that this summer blows with all the rain and bullshit happening out there. I am not Jordan Williams; I am Dan Watson, filling in for a banged up Jordan Williams. I will be filling in for Jordan for a few weeks while Jordan rests up.

Working Gaming Update

Duke Nukem: Forever

I picked up Duke as more of a game to play around with and relieve stress by laughing at his immature jokes. I am still laugh as if I was twelve years old again when I hear Duke make some joke about how he can see his Dick from the top of a building, or when I throw shit against a wall (literally shit), or even when I realize that the first part of the game is just a video game and while Duke was playing, he was getting a blow job from two chicks called the Holson twins. This game has been a ton of fun and I am happy that I picked it up.

Border Lands

I've gone back to playing this game for a few weeks now and I have to say the DLC is pretty cool. I am a huge fan of some the humor in this game as well and enjoy just running around blowing shit up. I am hoping to continue playing this one for the greater part of the next month as I go through and max out the achievements.

Brink

Alright, so I am playing Brink. I wanted to give this game a second chance and am starting to regret it. The game isn't bad, per say, it is more just annoying and stressful. I have teamed up with Adam Larck to play this game and each time we play, I just get more and more pissed off. There is no balance in the game at all I feel like. When I am level ten, I feel like the enemies are level twenty. The AI on my team, well they just suck. I have seen on numerous occasions the AI just run back and forth in one area that the battle is nowhere near. I get that some people are afraid to die, but it is a game.

Working Title: Duke Nukem Forever and why is it getting all this bad press

There was a time, not too long ago, when video games were mostly platform games, fighters, and racing games. Then first person shooters came along. Many of the games were about aliens invading the planet, with a sole hero saving the world. These games were great and very controversial for their time.

Then in 1991 came the most controversial yet, Duke Nukem. Originally, the game was about a man who the CIA hired to take out an enemy who was planning on taking over the world with his army of robots. The sequel came out two years later and again the game was pretty basic. Then in 1996, Duke Nukem 3D was released. Duke was redesigned to be more of the Duke we know today. The game had strong language, sexual content, cultural stereotypes, and tons of blood and violence. This game was every teenage boy's dream game.

In 1997, it was announced that Duke Nukem: Forever was being developed. This game had become the joke of many and it seemed that it was never going to be released. There had been information thrown out about it every couple years, just reminding us that the game was not cancelled nor was there any plan to cancel it. In 2009, that story didn't change, even though the entire development team had been released.

This year, the game released and the jokes were supposed to have stopped; they didn't. Instead, the game was rated extremely poorly and the reviews became very harsh and almost personal. This was before I had even tried the game and only persuaded me more to go and check it out, to see if it deserved this attack. After playing it, I have to disagree with these attacks. This is a solid game. You have to take into context that the game isn't going to be Call of Duty or Halo; it is an old fashioned first person shooter. You play the game as if it was a parody and the game is not bad at all.

I am over half way done with the game and have to say, it is enjoyable. There is no reason this game should be receiving ratings in the two through four range. I would say the game is a solid six to seven, as long as you don't take the game seriously. I will be posting a review soon, if it hasn't been done already ( I am typing this up on Wednesday keep in mind). The visuals are very much what I remember from Duke Nukem 3D, the voice reminds you of all those good times when you would be playing and hoping that your mom doesn't walk in and see what you are playing, and the violence, well there is tons of that as well.

In Summary

If you don't like Duke Nukem, have a reason for it. Don't just jump on the bandwagon because everyone else is. The game is pretty awesome in my opinion and really that is the only one you should listen to. If you like tits, booze, and blowing shit up; this game is for you. If you don't, well then I am assuming you aren't enjoying life and I recommend you start trying some of what I listed above, probably in that order as well.

The main problems I have with it are:

1) It's too short.
2) Vehicle controls suck, especially since the camera isn't glued to your ass, making some of the required jumps more difficult than they would be otherwise. Even Borderlands vehicle controls, while not the best, would have been a definite improvement.
3) Too many spots where you're not shooting things that aren't filled in with puzzles.
4) It's definitely too short.
5) Too many dark areas to artificially increase the difficulty (or make you pay for bypassing the difficulty with Duke Vision)
6) Not enough boobies to slap in The Hive.
7) Way too short. The DLC better make up for it, especially the free one promised for First Access Clubbers.

Get well soon, Jordan!

Also, Duke Nukem is a poorly made game, especially on consoles. The framerate is horrendous, the pop-in is bad, the graphics are weak, the load times are terrible, the aiming is off, the difficulty spikes are annoying...need I go on? I tolerated it because I'm a Duke fan, but even I know it's not a particuarly good game.

@The Ogre
I don't know if it was just me, but I spent probably about 15+ hours on the single-player campaign (I did play on Hard however). That's extremely long for a type of FPS like this, especially when your average COD game has a 5hr campaign mode.

i havent played the game yet but ive seen many game play videos and even played the demo... i have to say from what ivs seen the game lives up to its name...

its duke nukem and it feels right...

as far as dated textures and gameplay elments go... i have to say no shit dumbasses!!!

if you even paid any attention to the devolpement youd know its been worked on for a long time and all gesarbox did was buy the ip finish what was unfinished and put polish on it...

it was a service for duke fans otherwise it would have been lost forever...

reviewers look retarded for rating it bat on the basis of old looks and old feel because they already knew that and mentioned it in previews...

no is it worth $60... i dont think so... more like $30... unless your a diehard fan and cant wait...

this game is treated like shit just like AVP before it and both were undiserving...

i think this should be around 6 to 7... and AVP from 7 to 8... neither diserved 5 and lower...

not all games need to be cod... unreal tournament, doom, quake, duke and avp are old school shooters that paved the way for everything else... and in our day and age their actually a refreshing change of pace from the typical shooters flooding the market today...

OLD SCHOOL DOSENT MEAN BAD!!!!!

i guess new gamers just dont understand because they started with great technology and advanced multiplayer...

real gamers respect and enjoy old school games....

I have to say that after playing the game for 1 hour or so, I was just disappointed. I'll try to give examples but I'm sure I forget some of it.

1) The graphics. Yes, the engine is old and I knew that we wouldn't get a Crysis but while they managed to make the game look good in certain areas (think about the fight with the laser cannon on top of the building against the huge mothership)it just looks crap in others. The more you progress in the game the better it looks, in my opinion, but there are spots that feel that they don't belong there.

2) Interactivity. What made Duke stand out so much back in the days was it's interactivity with objects. Sure, you couldn't use EVERYthing but since it was new it was awesome. I expected more of that in DNF. Think about the billiards table. It is the same as in 1996. You can click/use it and the balls start moving. I expected that you could use the billiard cues on the wall and have a real (basic) game of billiards. Would I have spent hours with it? No, but why make it that simple as if it was 96 again?

3) One Liners: There are some good ones but somehow the majority don't appeal to me. Maybe it is because I got older and expected even more vulgarity (it had to top Duke3D somehow)to be "shocked" again.

4) Easter Eggs/Secret Rooms. Now I'm sure that it's possible that I just missed some references to other games. But so far I only got the WoW/Jenkins, Halo, Donkey Kong that stick out. Again, possible that I missed some. But where are the secret rooms. Part of what made D3D so awesome was it's shortcuts in levels. Especially since you could use them in MP. I haven't seen any of that so far.

5) Editor. Please, for the love of god give us an editor that is as accessible as Build. It would boost the game's Mp enormously.

In the end I have to say that the more I progressed in the game, the more I enjoyed it. It's not the masterpiece that I secretly hoped for but I can't be suprised about it. I just thought that Gearbox could save the day and make it a standout game. To me, it's good. I enjoy it and I plan to do another playthrough to get the golden gun achievement.

I just hope that they work on another part which can compete with, by then up to date, games and it should be able to blow them out the water. Simply by featuring Duke Nukem.

I haven't played it as I don't own anything that can handle a game like this. But I have watched some play-throughs on youtube.

I think people forget that games are supposed to entertain. And this game looked entertaining. Maybe it isn't game of the year quality but it looked good to me. If I can ever get my hands on a 360, I plan on getting this.

Don't. Avoid the 360 version at all costs - *that* is the version that's causing the vast majority of critic and reviewer hate. The PC version's a lot better graphically, even on lesser hardware, and with the load times.

I call it the daikatana backlash, only daikatana didn't take as long as duke nukem to be released.

IMO there is no reason to ever put much time into great graphics in a game. Instead, put modding tools in and hope that your game gets mod attention.

My copy of Fallout 3 right now looks better than Crysis and Crysis 2, because I got the graphics mods for it that my system can barely run (GTX 470 overclocked). If I had SLI and cared even more, I could make the graphics look even better, as the modders always give different mod packs so you can get what your system can run. This is a far better system than a one size fits all.

Will Duke get mods? I don't know, maybe. I'm personally not that big a fan of FPS and console because of modding ability. A game like Oblivion or Fallout is still fresh years later because of user added content and graphics updates. Adding a new map on an FPS probably isn't the same, but I am probably wrong and an FPS head can shed more light on that.

This game really should have been $20-40 range. It's really not a major big budget title, the graphics and gameplay just simply are not up to that level. Devs need to learn to price their games accordingly.

I believe a lot of the complaints would be eliminated if this was a $40 game, which is the high end of my range even. I knew this wouldn't be a great game, and it's still a little disappointing even then honestly, but I don't hate it as much as other people do. I got it off of a friend that already got through the campaign. I offered $30 but he just gave it to me for free, I believe he's listing it online soon to sell it.

Duke is not a parody nor is it old school. It's actually that awkward phase between old school and new school FPS. The driving, platforming, and puzzle elements would have been new back in 1998 or 9 if had been released on time, but now they're extremely dated and trite. You can't parody something when you succumb to the same stereotypes.

Actions speak louder than words. While Duke may poke fun at modern day FPS(literally with voice-over) the game includes all the annoying puzzle and platforming elements that he claims to make fun of. Old school would have been Duke in a big intricately designed level with health power ups(not a regenerating health bar) a shit ton of weapons(not two at a time) and hordes of enemies to blow apart with new sections being locked doors and the next big level.
