Working Title 07.08.11: My Personal Favorites
Posted by Dan Watson on 07.08.2011
From having a college dorm-wide Halo 2 war and loving WCW/NWO Revenge to playing through the original Resident Evil, 411's Dan Watson looks at his personal favorite moments in gaming!
Welcome back to Working Title. This will be my last week writing as your host, next week your normal guy will be back. It was good to be your host temporarily; however, all good things come to an end. So this week, I am just going to give you a top five list of my favorite games with little stories attached.
Working Games
I am currently working extensively on the Call of Duty map pack. The game is basically the most hellacious map pack so far. The achievement for zombies this time around is even worse than the previous map pack. This one requires all four players to play and takes way too long with too many intangibles.
I have continued to play Dungeon Siege three as well. This game is very good just with a few minor issues that I have. Look for reviews on both games coming this week hopefully.
Also, I am still playing Half Minute Hero. Check this game out in the arcade if you get a chance to. The game is fun, quick, and has a different feel to it. I truly am enjoying the game.
Working List
This week I wanted to give a few personal favorite moments or games in general. Please feel free to add some of your own stories in the comments section.
5. WCW/NWO Revenge (Nintendo 64)
When I was playing this game it was around eighth grade. I enjoyed this game more than WWF No Mercy because this was the one all of my friends were playing. I would now say that No Mercy is a better game, but this was the game to play back then. So my personal favorite moment was playing at a birthday party and the guy lost a long ass match. Next thing I know, he runs upstairs slams his door shut, then kicks the damn door so hard, his foot goes through. His parents are screaming at him, and we are just laughing. Man that was some good cake that night.
4. Metal Gear Solid (PS1)
So this game is one of my all-time favorites, however, there is one story that stuck with me and has caused me to never forget the game, while also teaching me irony. So I was playing the game all day one summer day with everyone telling me to go outside. At the time, I had one of those old televisions with twistable knobs on the front to change channels. Anyways, so I am at a part in the game where you have to fight a helicopter. This thing is kicking my ass for most of the fight. I finally down the helicopter and smoke starts coming out of the back of the television. I watched the helicopter crash and then a big flash and television was dead. Ever since then, I have always loved playing that game and think of that situation whenever I hear the name Metal Gear Solid.
3. Resident Evil (PS1)
So the Sony Playstation had just launched and I was not going to give up my time with N64 for a Playstation. Well I was visiting my cousin and he had just picked up this console with a few launch titles. One of the titles was this game, Resident Evil. So he puts the game in and we are playing. I was impressed already by the graphics. Then we get into the mansion, hear the glass break, and walk into the next room. Inside the room there was the first zombie of the game. The cutscene was intense. He turns around and walks towards you, blood dripping from his jaw. From then on, I was hooked. I became an instant fan of Horror/Action genre and have played almost every game in the genre that I can get my hands on.
2. The Last Remnant (Xbox 360)
So a few years back there was a RPG that I was told to pick up called Last Remnant. The game was amazing. Well one of the boss fights was this enormous dragon. The problem with the dragon was he could kill your three teams in very few hits. If you got behind, you would be in a pathetic loop of healing each group and then dying and trying to keep up. Well, this game was being played while I was a Resident Assistant back in college. My buddy, Adam, would hang out in my room while I was on rounds and play games and we would just switch controllers between rounds. Well, I leave the room for my two A.M. rounds and come back and Adam is back in this fight for the hundredth time. We I was up already so I figured let's try and see what happens. After about an hour of fighting, Adam beat this dragon. The room was filled with overwhelming joy and all was right in the world. We never beat the game. I had graduated and Adam lived too far away to continue the game on my console. I still wonder what the final cutscene was.
1. Halo 2 the $6,000 War (Xbox 360)
In 2005, I realized I shouldn't have a roommate in college that has been there longer than most doctors go to college. He had been in school for about seven or eight years and still had a year to go. We were rooming together and I had a girlfriend cheat on me and he had just broken up with his girlfriend. We were miserable and the semester was about a month in. We decided to play Halo 2 against anyone on the LAN. Well we ended up finding this group of guys that were just total tools. We got into a match and it was three versus two. We destroyed them and then the trash talking began. It ended up being guys from down the hall. That semester, the battles had gone on so many times that the five of us had recruited others in the building and we continued to skip classes. Our building ended up having the lowest GPA on campus and I would like to think that we had a huge hand in that.
Well guys, it has been a fun couple of weeks with you all. Please post any stories you have down below. Look for a great article next week and if you enjoy my writing check out the average gamer each week.
LOL that Halo story reminds me of my time in college, except it was Tekken 3 and WWF War Zone on PSX that ruined all of my dormmates college careers. Good stuff!

I'm a Brit who spent a year at a University in the States and I liked to joke around with the locals that American Football was just a pussier version of rugby. I got invited to join in their long group sessions on Madden, presumably to shut me up. Unbelievably I managed to destroy all comers despite having never played an American football game in my life with my button mashing and random play selections (including running from my own 30 yard line on 4th down). I was quickly exposed as a total amateur but for one night I was a king.
