411 Games Fact or Fiction 11.08.11 GTA V, Modern Warfare 3, PS3 and More
Posted by Adam Larck on 11.08.2011

Welcome back to another week of 411 Games Fact or Fiction. I'm Adam Larck, and I'm enjoying the Sims 3 Pets and Batman: Arkham City right now, but my attention will go to Skyrim this week.

This week, we have Dan Watson and Jordan Williams going head-to-head. Let's see how these two do. Time for banner!

1.) The Grand Theft Auto V trailer got you excited already.

Jordan Williams - Fiction: Being completely honest, from what I saw I wasn't really that excited. It reminded me a lot of the GTAIV trailer that showed off all of the graphics but it didn't really DO anything for me. I'll wait until I see what's going on with the actual game before I get excited. Plus I have some real problems with GTAIV and I really hope there are addressed (Niko being a murderous fucker when not in a mission but the whiniest bastard out of a mission) or at the very least looked into before I get into full hype mode for it. All I can say right now is "Gee, that looks pretty" and that's it.

Dan Watson - Fiction: Honestly, with so little information out there, I just cannot get excited yet. This game could come out in 2013 possibly. There just isn't enough information out there and the trailer really only confirmed the location and that the character is a guy. If more things get released, I would be excited. It probably doesn't help that there are so many other major games coming out this month that are getting me excited, Saints Row the third included.

Score: 1 for 1 - It seemed like your typical GTA teaser trailer. I just want to know how much the economy will factor into the game.

2.) Modern Warfare 3 will sell more than Battlefield 3 did in a week.

Jordan Williams - Fact: As much as I love Battlefield, it's no secret that name recognition goes far nowadays and you just do NOT bet against Call of Duty this generation. I am even inclined to think that Modern Warfare might sell more in its first DAY than BF3 sold in its first week. Even though the war between the two games will be argued forever when it comes down to the brass tacks of how much money one brings in, CoD is going to always win.

Dan Watson - Fact: Modern Warfare 3 will outsell any previous game that has ever come out. The only concern I have for sales in this game is the fact that Skyrim is coming out just a few days later which may prevent some from buying MW3. Overall though, I would bet this game sets records for daily, weekly, and monthly sales.

Score: 2 for 2 - As much as EA wanted to compete this year, I think Modern Warfare will blow them out of the water.

3.) The PS3 will eventually pass the 360 in sales.

Jordan Williams - Fact: But I don't think so in the way some might think. I think we are nearing the end of the Xbox 360 and by 2013 it will gone in favor of the new push for the next console (to be released in 2014). But Sony has a notoriously long tail with its consoles. So I do think the PS3 will hang around long after the end of this generation and EVENTUALLY beat the Xbox 360 in sales, but it will be after the Xbox 360 has left the market proper.

Dan Watson - Fact: There are so many other games coming out just for the Sony console as opposed to Xbox 360 who are relying on bringing back older series that were supposed to be dead or have lost series already. This year Gears of War series ended, Halo is being brought back in what seems like a cash grab effort, and other Microsoft exclusives are just disappearing. Sony is bringing back Twisted Metal, has Resistance, Uncharted, God of War, and a plethora of other games. In addition, their games are still only one disc as opposed to Microsoft, which has many games coming out on multiple discs. I just don't see Microsoft holding the lead forever.

Score: 3 for 3 - Look how long the PS2 sold. If Sony can get the PS3 to that point, then they'll eventually surpass the 360.

4.) Dead World will end up being a sequel to Dead Island.

Dan Watson - Fact: This seems to be an eventual sequel but don't we need a few steps before then. Maybe Dead Mainland or Dead City and then maybe Dead World. I am hoping there is a sequel next year or the year after. There aren't many great games that are multi-player co-op games anymore but this was one and it was great at it. In the end, I just like playing with friends and kicking zombies so I'm hoping for a sequel.

Jordan Williams - Fact: I actually never got around to playing Dead Island but from all accounts it was certainly popular enough to get a sequel so I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case..

Score: 4 for 4 - It wouldn't surprise me if this was the actual sequel, but it'd be interesting to see how much of the world will actually be explorable.

5.) With Nintendo and Sony both predicting losses this year, Microsoft will follow suit.

Dan Watson - Fiction: Microsoft may go the other route and say look at us we are the best and have won console battle. I am not sure how they are financially but Kinect seems to be taking off in sales and consoles are still selling. Everything seems to be going right for them and they had some major games come out this year so maybe that will translate to sales and money for them.

Jordan Williams - Fact: While I don't think that the losses that Microsoft will suffer will be a bad as the others I still think there will be loses simply because this year more so than others we didn't have that "Year Round" hot streak that we did last year with at least one big game coming out every month for every console. This year is super heavy on the back end and while it will help out the consoles I don't think it's enough to help them not post a loss.

Score: 4 for 5 - I think the big three will all have a loss this year, but I think Microsoft may come out the best of the three.

6.) Skullgirls will really be able to fix some of the problems the fighting game genre has had with balancing.

Dan Watson - Fiction: Until a game gives me a hands-on chance to see how it plays, I am no longer going to think that the video shows that balancing is fixed. I hate that fighting genre has become a sequel genre as of late and hoping that a few new IPs may switch things around. We will see though, but until I get a hands on opportunity, I won't be holding my breath.

Jordan Williams - Fiction: Skullgirls is certainly trying it's ass off and I will give them all the credit in the world. But I think the problem with fighting game balancing isn't so much in the characters being cheap or broken or someone exploiting something. It's all about teaching the players HOW to use the mechanics effectively (and competitively). Which with the limited time I've seen with Skullgirls (They are always a regular on Wednesday Night Fights) I haven't seen any of that. Given it's still and Alpha and we don't know if they have that stuff planned later we don't REALLY know. But what we do know is that all of the balance in the world won't help if the players (new and old alike) don't know what the hell they are doing...or what they CAN do.

Score: 5 for 6 - It'd be great to see some of those problems fixed, but until you see how easy it is to do in action I'll remain doubtful.

Bonus Question) What will you get this week if you get one? Modern Warfare 3 or Skyrim?

Dan Watson - Both: I have been planning a 3 game in 7 day binge for a while. COD, then Skyrim, and then finally Saints Row. I cannot wait until I have all three of these games and can stop budgeting so much for games.

Jordan Williams - Skyrim: MW3 can wait. After a year straight of playing shooting games online with people I just want to sit back and spend some time playing with by myself.

Adam Larck - Skyrim: This is a no contest for me. I have no interest in Modern Warfare 3, and loved Oblivion. I've been looking forward to this since it was announced, and can't wait to get my hands on it this week.

The pair finish this week going 5-for-6. What do you think? Agree or disagree with their answers? Let us know. See you in seven!

I personally hate COD, so I definitely wont be getting that. I am a huge gamer and have played nearly every game on the PS3 that has had any interest in me, but an exception is that I've never played any Elder Scrolls before but I have Skyrim pre-ordered. Looks fucking amazing.

I too hate COD and extremely blinded fan base is what keeps that game around. When they update it and make combat more realistic I'll get back on the COD band wagon. I will be getting skyrim collectors edition. And like the last one I'll be spending atleast the next sixth months lost in the world of skyrim. I'm a huge of fan TES and loved oblivion. Liked morrowind too but it was a bit too alien for my taste.

You've never played an Elder Scrolls game before? Man, you are in for a real treat :)

Definitely Skyrim. I'm getting tired of the modern FPS. It's too linear and dumbed-down. The main story only take 4-6 hours, In recent CoD titles. Skyrim will be much better with it 300+ hours of gaming. And what's better than the freedom that The Elder Scrolls series gives you? In CoD and BF, it's go here shoot that. In TES, it's do whatever you want. SKYRIM WINS.

That's irrelevant. When they released a list of the top ten highest selling games of 2010, only one was a console exclusive... and it was Halo: Reach. Every multi-platform game sells more copies on X360, which is why it has the lead. Sony's stable of exclusives are simply not translating into sales. Don't be surprised if Halo 4 outsells all of Sony's exclusives combined.

Also, I find it ironic that you claim that the Gears of War series has ended, while Sony still has God of War. God of War has also ended, and if it is brought back it will look like an even bigger cash-grab than Halo 4 (and this is coming from a HUGE God of War fan).

Also, I get the feeling that multiple discs is not as much of a problem as you make it out to be.

I think Jordan is right however- if the 360 is canned in a couple of years while the PS3 actually has that 10-15 year lifespan they were talking about, PS3 will eventually get the lead. The question is whether Sony have enough faith in the console to keep going for that length of time.

Is this response for real? This is such a bad "fact". Sounds like a fanboy answer. I liked the Jordan's answer. That makes sense.

good questions this week i think though on whether ms will make a loss this year depends if its just there gaming division then maybe but if its not then no they will be in profit. (MS software Windows, office etc, server and maintenance contracts, licenses etc...... plus the gaming division they be in profit)

Its why Nintendo losses are huge because they are just a gaming company they do no have any other means of income unlike Sony and MS

The thing with CoD is that every game of the series is basically the same thing with a different map. Having played 650+ hours of Oblivion, I cant wait to get my hands on Skyrim and have had it preordered for 2 months. Friday can not come soon enough. I have a bunch of friends coming over to my place for 3 straight days of Skyrim nerding. Even had to go out and get another flatscreen to bring the total up to 5 in my living room.

If you didn't get excited by the GTAV trailer, you weren't paying enough attention.

Certainly they didn't give any details out. . . but I'm pretty sure I know Ray Liotta's voice when I hear it, and I'm pretty sure that was an older Tommy Vercetti in the trailer.

I'm also pretty sure I saw CJ in that trailer, and certainly a house from that neighborhood being marked for sale.

And was that homeless dude with a sign Niko Bellic?

Dan. Your 360 multiple disc argument is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. So what if some games require multiple discs? If that's your argument for the 360 being obsolete, than i would wager you cant you cant bend over. Skyrim fits on one disc and that's a massive game.

Besides every PC game now contains two discs (I know its because the video is uncompressed) does that make PC inferior to the PS3's mighty 2x read speed Bluray disc drive?

Id rather change disc than have to install games because the drive is too slow to read off the disc.

Skyrim for sure.
I'm psyched that you can burn down all the farms and poison all the wells around a town then go into the town to find that prices for wheat and non-poison water skyrocket! An actual direct cause and effect based on your actions!

What on earth makes you think microsoft is going to make a loss?! Just pull that out the air did you.

Skyrim is more or less a glorified runescape. MW3 ftw

nintendo and sony lost money because of the STRONG YEN, something microsoft doesn't have to worry about. if the yen gets devalued or the dollar gets stronger nintendo shouldn't even post a loss next year.

Posted By: Guest#1382 (Guest)  on November 08, 2011 at 08:07 AM

Ok so this is stupid. MW3 and Skyrim are two completely different games. MW3 is a shooter and Skyrim is an RPG. How can you compare the two? They both have different audiences. Personally I'm going to get Skyrim over MW3 because I prefer RPGs and love the Elder Scrolls. Also I don't have online so I wouldn't enjoy MW3 as much.

You guys really aren't that smart lol. What's this about a new Xbox? I haven't heard anything about it. I mean, maybe I'm just not that updated but the only thing I'm really know about that's coming out is the PS Vita.

While COD: MW3 is a glorified Combat Arms, but without the fun.

It's sad to think that COD has fallen victim to Maddenitis. You know putting out the same game every year, but having a fanbase that doesn't know that.

Amusing how the 360 has nothing but series they're "bringing back" and that's bad, but the PS3 has a ton of games like 'list of series they're bringing back' and that's good.

God of War, Twisted Metal, Resistance, Uncharted...so fresh.

PS3 fanboys just will not let that multiple disc thing go. Like it's that big of a deal to change a disc on a couple of titles.

... cause it's the only thing they got!

Superiority doesn't factor into sells, multi-platform & 1st party games almost always sell more on the "inferior" multi-disc console.

BF3 game and quality of players transition from CoD so there might be a few BF3 players online and will move over to CoD but who knows. I never did like CoD players that think everyone is a noob if you don't kill how they want and if you dominate said players they whine and bitch that you are this and that. BF3 > CoD.

I hope by next generation people forget FPS' ever existed because they simply ruined this one.
