Average Gamer 1.13.12: Top Horror Games Edition
Posted by Dan Watson on 01.13.2012
The Average Gamer takes a look back at the top horror games out there on the first Friday the 13th of the Year.
Welcome back to the Average Gamer. Today is the first of three Friday the Thirteenths we will have this year. Last year we had one and normally we have one or two but three seems abnormally high, especially for a year with so much gloom and doom projected. In addition to all that, you have Tim Tebow throwing for 316 yards and averaging 31.6 yards per reception…. Either someone didn't calculate those numbers right or someone wanted to have this guy look really biblical.
In the real world for me, snow has finally arrived. Luckily, I have a job with a boss that is nice enough to let me work from home once or twice a week which saved me Thursday from driving in the snow. On top of that, Illinois is robbing me blind on the toll way now; my monthly payment to them went from $38.25 to $81.95. If any other company would try to have an increase like that, the entire country would be outraged and boycotting. I tried to go around the tolls by taking surface streets and ended up wasting more gas than I was saving by avoiding the tolls.
In the gaming world, since I have completed Saints Row 3 100% for the time being (until DLC is released), I have gone to WWE12 to try to finish up those achievements. Also, Gears of War 3, Call of Duty and Forza continue to spin in the 360. I tried to cheat to get an achievement in WWE 12 and it backfired. The achievement simply states win five titles with a created superstar. So, I put my created superstar in five title matches and won each of them. Guess what, it doesn't work. You have to win titles in matches that you are placed in by the computer. Which means going through and becoming number one contender and going through the matches that way. So I have to lose each title and go back to win them.
Top Horror Games
For those that don't remember, Friday the Thirteenth used to be a cool day to watch horror movies. Normally channels like USA and TNT would play scary movies all night. That isn't the case anymore sadly but I still like to be scared on the days when the thirteenth falls on a Friday. So let's get to some scary games that are always good for a jump or two.
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil was a creepy game and was great for some stressful moments. Resident Evil 2 was best for moments that made you jump. I was always on the look-out for Mr. X to come slamming through walls or chasing after me. This was great for moments to jump during. Normally it would happen just after finishing a puzzle or clearing an area and then boom, here he comes. If you got caught in a corner you were done. This game was awesome for scare factor.
Dead Space 2
Here is another sequel that provided tons of dark, scary moments that made you jump out of your seat. You would be walking down the hallway and an enemy would fall out of the vent or grab you from the wall. Also, it had creepy children attack you and that always just gets to me. I don't know many people that aren't creeped out by demonic children. In the end this game provided about eight to ten hours of dark creepy shooting. I would recommend picking this up if you haven't already done so.
Silent Hill (pick any of the installments)
This has always been a series that intrigues me. The creepy enemies, the foggy sceneries, even the strange characters. Each game has a stranger supporting cast than then previous game. It really is just a strange game. Top that with the weird time changes and buzzing of radios as well as enemies crawling out from under cars and you have a very scary game. Homecoming was a great game if you are looking to pick up a current generation copy of the series otherwise I am clueless as to any others in the current generation.
Condemned
Another current generation game that was very creepy. This one just really had a scary story with it mixed with some unpleasant people. Even in the end, you kind of had to sit back and wonder what just happened and why did it happen. It takes about six hours to beat this one and is good for a weekend rental or a cheap used pick up if you don't already have it.
Prey
Ah, nothing like aliens killing humans, right? This game started off awesome with "Don't Fear the Reaper" playing while you are being abducted. You play as an American Indian who was just abducted along with your girlfriend and your grandfather. This game took about sixteen years to release so if you never had a chance to pick it up, why not? The multiplayer was terrible but the single player story was pretty good. You see everything from humans being devoured to just the normal gore of a first person shooter. Give it a shot.
Alan Wake
Again, this was a game that took a while in development. It was, at some point, supposed to be a 360 launch title and didn't come out until recently. The game is pretty good, and the story is just as creepy as Silent Hill. You can tell from get the get go things are about to get really screwed up and you are unsure as to who to trust. The fun part about this game is that there are multiple endings which means that multiple playthroughs are needed to find the true ending. I would encourage you to at least rent this game especially if you like a few moments where you are spooked.
Well guys and gals, hopefully none of the crazy superstitions are real and today will be just another normal day. For the sake of entertainment though, give me some of your favorite superstitions, whether related to Friday the 13th or anything else.

As does The Suffering

Project Zero/Fatal Frame says hi.

Seconded.
Also, I've never understood why Resident Evil 2 is considered the best of the old-school survival-horror style Resident Evil games. Resident Evil 3 was just as good, if not better, and the remake of Resident Evil 1 on GameCube was great and scared the piss out of me.

Eternal Darkness didn't make the list?

Fatal Frame 1-3 and Suffering were great games, but we have been blessed with a genre filled with fantastic games and in a list of only 8 choices, not all of the greats are gonna be there. I haven't played many of the newer games, but I am excited to see them on this list which means that they are probably worth my time.
Has anyone tried Rise of Nightmares? I'm curious how it stacks up.
Since I still have 2000 characters left, I'll give an honorable mention to Siren. It did a great job of actually making me feel helpless in a survival horror game and I cared about the characters. The flow of the game timeline was well done and innovative, as well.

So with Resident Evil 2 I am assuming you have it mixed up with 3 as the scenario you describe would be in that game.
I wish someone who had played more of the games would have posted a list as you seem to just slap them together with very little knowledge other than "It's a scary game" subbing in scary with creepy or whatever you wanted.

Thought I was losing it there for a moment. I was thinking to myself "Oh yea, when the dogs busted through the windows when you were going down the corridor made me jump so bad I dropped the controller" Then it mentioned Mr X, and I thought "Who? I don't remember being chased in that one"
So was it 2 you liked or was it really 3?

Because it couldn't have been a simple typo, right? COULDN'T POSSIBLY have been that. Just whine about him not knowing anything instead.

No, this is in resident Evil 2, if you bothered to finish it and play the B scenario you would see Mr X chasing you, breaking walls etc
Nemesis was Res 3, Mr X was Res 2
Posted By: Smithy (Guest) on January 13, 2012 at 05:28 PM
Mr. X was better and more scary than Nemesis

Amnesia is the scariest game I've ever played, followed by Eternal Darkness.

I guess no one ever played the Clock Tower games. Now that's some scary shit.

Fatal Frame for me, and the series got better/scarier with each installment.
I thought Manhunt had a pretty scary atmosphere, enough so that I felt unnerved playing it in the dark.
