Around the Gaming World News Report 03.16.12
Posted by Chris Ferrell on 03.16.2012

Hey everyone, welcome to the latest installment of Around The Gaming World. If this is your first time checking in I try to cover some of the major stories for each console in addition to news, which in my opinion, is the news of the week. And yes, I still did find a way to include Mass Effect 3 in the news report even though it's already launched. What can I say, I'm a fanboy!

Assassin's Creed 3 with 4 Player Co-Op - The Xbox Live Marketplace's listing for Assassin's Creed 3 briefly counted "Online co-op 2 - 4" among the game's various features, as well as "Online multiplayer 2 - 8." While the online multiplayer classification remains, the co-op listing has since been removed from both the European and North American Xbox Live Marketplace.

I'll admit, that I have enjoyed the multiplayer modes in the past Assassin's Creed games. But, I have always loved cooperative gaming dating back to my days playing the NES. If there is a co-op mode in Assassin's Creed 3 I might actually be enticed to buy the game at launch instead of waiting for it to get cheap. In the early days of the game there will be a lot of people playing online but as time goes on less and less people will be playing the co-op mode.

It just makes me laugh that yet again more information has been leaked over Xbox Live. XBL leaked the Mass Effect Day 1 DLC a couple weeks before the launch and now they leaked the co-op on Assassin's Creed 3. To be fair, XBL has posted erroneous information in the past and it could have happened this time. But this co-op gameplay sounds like a natural evolution so my bet is this is legit.

New Xbox Achievement Policy - The rules for achievements in Xbox Live arcade games are changing. There will now be a new maximum number of achievements/points that can be earned in an arcade game.

Old Rules
Base: 200 Gamerscore / Max of 20 Achievements
DLC: Up to 50 Gamerscore + 5 Achievements per Quarter (3 Max)
Total: Up to 350 Gamerscore / 35 Achievements

New Rules
Base: 400 Gamerscore / Max of 30 Achievements
DLC: Up to 100 Gamerscore + 8 Achievements per Quarter (4 Max)
Total: Up to 800 Gamerscore / 62 Achievements

So this means I can get more Gamerscore points? Sounds like a win to me. As the arcade games become longer and allow for more gameplay options it makes sense that there would be a need for more achievements and in turn more points for a player to earn. This is a simple change that will keep gamers playing the arcade games so it seems like a smart move to me.

House of the Dead 4 Coming to PSN - A new Sega arcade shooter comes home for the first time next month, when House of the Dead 4 hits PS3 on April 17, for $9.99. The PSN game will feature HD graphics, Move support, and multiple new Trophies

The House of the Dead games have always been fun. To this day I will still waste quarters in the arcade trying to beat this game. Being able to play it anytime at home would sure help me save in quarters. But, I'm not sure how well the experience will translate to the console without a conventional light gun. Will the Move be able to work quickly enough to translate into a lightgun? My guess is that it will, but it's certainly something I would want to try.

Ratchet and Clank HD Coming This Fall - The Ratchet and Clank Collection, an HD roundup of Insomniac's popular PS2 platformers, has been officially announced by the PlayStation Blog. Reportedly, the three titles will feature 1080p HD support (720p in 3D), Trophies, and the online, competitive multiplayer component found in the latest game. The game will be available May 16 in Europe and some time ‘this fall' in North America.

Last week I showed that Amazon France spilled the beans on this game. Glad to see Sony announced the game pretty quickly after the leak. It kept fanboy speculation from running rampant. That being said, all the additions to this game make sense and should make for a fun romp on the PS3. Having minimal experience with Ratchet and Clank I think I'll be checking this game out when it releases.

I was a little surprised to see that there is no exact date for the release in North America. I'm sure the game will come out around the same time it releases in Europe. I honestly have to admit I'm a little surprised that it looks like Europe will get the game first. Keep your eyes open to see what happens.

I Want A Gameboy Transformer - Some talented Lego artists have used their talents to create a Gameboy and Tetris cartridge made only of Legos. Not only that, but the Gameboy then turns into a Transformer!

Via: MOCPages

As a child of the 1980s I am already obligated to love this creation. Honestly, how can anyone not like this Lego creation? I can't even imagine the hours of time that went into crafting this Transformer. I'm sure there are hours upon hours of design time put into this... luckily it pays off because the Transformer looks awesome!

Mass Effect 3 Sells Big Time! - Mass Effect 3 sold 890,000 copies in its first 24 hours of availability in North America, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitello said Thursday at the Wedbush Securities, Technology, Media and Telecommunications Conference. Not only that, but BioWare has reported that 3.5 million copies of the game were shipped worldwide!

Via: PC Mag

I wasn't shocked to see that Mass Effect 3 sold that many copies in 24 hours. After all, there has been a massive amount of hype for this game's release. That being said, 890K is a huge number in one day. Personally, I wonder how many of these sales were pre-orders and how many copies of the game were the N7 Legendary Edition.

Combining these massive sales with an average score of 94 on MetaCritic and this is huge for BioWare. I'm sure the sales and reviews will be helpful for the next round of RPGs to come from BioWare. Too bad it won't be about Commander Shepard though...

Thanks for checking in for your weekly dose of gaming news. Before closing everything up, I wanted to make an offer to the readers. I'm looking to get a better banner for this column, and my photoshop skills are lacking to say the least. If anyone wants to try their hand at making a new banner for Around The Gaming World that would be great. If I pick your banner I'll give you a section in one of my future columns for you to talk about whatever gaming issue you want. Just something to consider if you can do photoshop and want to rant about games.

I have to say, I have been very impressed with Mass Effect 3 so far. I'm only about 11 hours into the game and I'm maybe ¼ of the way through the game. This one is shaping up to be a long game. I'm looking to start playing some multiplayer to up my readiness level and see how much of a difference that makes.

If anyone else wants to play some multiplayer on Mass Effect 3 feel free to hit me up on Xbox Live. My Gamertag is Spidey616. I need to up my galactic readiness level and I'm told multiplayer helps a lot.
