The 8 Ball 29.05.12: Top 8 Funniest Video Games
Posted by David McGregor on 05.29.2012
From Conker's Bad Fur Day and Grand Theft Auto to Earthworm Jim and more, 411's David McGregor counts down his Top 8 Funniest Video Games!
Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of the 8 Ball for the games edition, I am David McGregor.
Last week we looked at games I wanted brought back, and it seemed to go pretty well. I will never really understand what you people want to see as I thought that one would have been a decent topic at best, yet PS1 games didn't get as much love which is sort of strange to me. Anyway, most said Crash Bandicoot but I had already spoken enough about the Crash series that I was pretty bored of writing about it.
I thought I would be writing this week's list on my new iMac, but sadly those people at Apple decided it was not to be. I'm stuck writing on this extremely annoying PC, I have deceased grandparents that are faster than this heap! Here's hoping next week I'm one of those Mac wankers. Anyway, this week I will be looking at the Top 8 Funny Video Games of all time! Or the ones I can remember anyway. Now this one is extremely subjective, what I kind funny others might not. It is hard to be subjective with humour so apologies if you all hate this one.
8th – Earthworm Jim
I actually thought this was originally a TV series before becoming a video game, as I can vividly remember watching this insane Earthworm Jim character on TV then going crazy because there was a game for the series. In fact only recently did I find out I was wrong, Google proving points since 1998. But that's meaningless as when I finally got my hands on a copy of the game I was not disappointed, it was fantastically done. The game clearly doesn't take itself seriously at all and rips into the other big games of the day, Mario and Sonic. The idea of looking for Princess What's Her Face while being hunted down for your super suit that fell from space is just fantastic, and this was still at a time when making fun of Mario and Sonic could be considered cool. Just ask those who developed Crash Bandicoot as they made millions from the very same thing.
While Earthworm Jim was platformer parody at its very best it was still a very good game in its own right. All of these games I listed are entertaining games, as well as incredibly funny. I mean Leisure Suit Larry is funny but that game sucks, but Jim was a great game at the same time and didn't have to lay back on just being funny in places. I should have put Earthworm Jim in my list last week as I quite miss the series, even if I did think it was a TV show spinoff for over a decade.
7th – Resident Evil
This is funny in a completely different way from the previous entry; mainly because the series is supposed to be deadly serious yet at the same time the voice acting is so ridiculous that it becomes hilarious. I really get a kick out of camp humour, for example the Eurovision Song Contest which is beyond words to describe it, and the original Resident Evil had that kind of campy humour by the bucket load! All of Resident Evil's humour comes from the terribly funny translation job they done from the original Japanese version. This lead to great quotes like when Jill is asked to unlock a door because she is the master of unlocking or when she is nearly squished into a Jill sandwich, brilliant.
The game is still amazing and quite scary at points, especially on first viewing. But there is no doubt at all that the game is just filled to the brim with hilarious quotes that are just so camp and awkwardly funny, like a poorly dubbed Japanese movie.
6th – Dead Rising
This is what I imagine Resident Evil would be like if they actually did try and be funny. The Dead Rising games are just ludicrous to the point of hilarity, the idea of mowing down hoards of zombies in a lawnmower is something I think 90% of gamers have been waiting to do for some time. This is one of the very few games that is really funny in its basic concept, not in cut scenes which is where most of the humour comes from in the other games on this list. In fact the cut scenes in Dead Rising are actually about the most serious part of the whole game.
The moment I realised Dead Rising was side-splittingly funny was the clown mini boss with the two chainsaws, seriously it is like IT on acid. The excessive gore and slapstick nature of the whole game just screams 80's B movie greatness. I really dislike Dead Rising because of its stupid saving system but I can't deny that I had a ton of fun just roaming around finding out every way you can take down the crowd of zombies. It is like Grand Theft Auto after you have completed the storyline, just fun exploring the game.
5th – Lego Star Wars (Lesser Extent the Lego Series)
I personally love the idea of the Lego series; it can take a film like Star Wars or Harry Potter and turn it into a hilarious little game just by recreating the original film. There is so much detail in these games that it is funny, it is odd to see your favourite characters recreated in Lego but when you realise how much effort and specific detail put in it becomes hilarious. I think the best example of this was the Lego Star Wars series; I just loved the whole thing and laughed my ass off throughout the game due to the absurdity of it. Also taking legendary villains like Darth Vader and Voldemort and recreating them in Lego is just amazing, definitely one of my favourite aspects of the series.
There are loads of Lego games filled with so much detail and references that there is something for everyone here. If you hate Star Wars go for Indiana Jones or Batman and if you hate them then there's something wrong with you, more so Indiana Jones. I would like them to start on random classic films next, especially ones that you wouldn't expect like Goodfellas or something similar. That is my favourite movie of all time but I would still get a kick out of Lego Joe Pesci. I just really enjoy these games and they are done in a way that is very faithful to the original material, as well as having enough in there for the diehard fans to benefit from.
4th – Wario Ware
This is a weird one; to me this is eccentric Japanese humour at its very best. These games would constantly surprise you with the ridiculous nature of the mini games, from brushing teeth to plucking hairs there was just so many comedic games here. I can remember the first time I played this and thinking it was a bit stupid, and then after about 10 minutes I couldn't stop laughing at how absurd the whole premise of this game was. I highly recommend playing the game with a group of friends because it is like Nintendo have created a game to make you look the like the biggest tool possible, which is always fun for social gatherings. It is like Singstar without the awkwardness of being made to sing in front of everyone, which without any alcohol is pretty weird.
This game doesn't take itself serious in the slightest and that makes for one of the most entertaining releases in the mini game genre. It might be placed a tad high but with hundreds of games to go through at vary degrees of ridiculousness there is very little like Wario Ware, even if Wario looks like a fiend with his chubby stature and moustache.
3rd – Conker's Bad Fur Day
I think everyone knew that this one would rear its rude little head eventually. Conker's Bad Fur Day is the go to game when you are talking about funny games, from the Poo Monster to the constant movie references there is loads of absurdity and wit throughout this game. It is one of those games that people still remember long after it is outdated, mainly because it is such a unique premise. A platformer game that is aimed at the adult market, and not in a Leisure Suit Larry way either, is a great concept. I still do not understand why Conker didn't start a trend as the idea is genius, it is the main reason South Park and Family guy are so popular. The idea of a childish form of entertainment in an adult environment is somehow very entertaining, maybe it's a nostalgia thing but it does seem to work very well. Yet the game industry doesn't seem to have gotten round to perfecting that one yet.
Back to the game, Conker was one of the funniest games I can remember playing. At the time most of the jokes went right over my head but there is universal comedy in there that anyone can enjoy, even though I was like 10 and way too young to get most of the jokes. One of the funniest games of all time, and rightfully remembered to this day for being something vastly different from the usual humdrum.
2nd – Portal
I put off playing Portal for years, I don't really like puzzle games and to be honest I had gotten bored of hearing about the bloody game. But a few months ago I thought I may as well give the game a go, I thought it was a decent game but I didn't understand the praise. But one point I didn't see coming was how hilarious GLaDOS was throughout the game, the constant taunts and one-liners are a real breath of fresh air all the way through the game. At first I was a little confused at the idea of this talking robot but when you settle into the game it becomes one of the most entertaining parts.
The whole promise of cake throughout the game brought a smile to my face on more than one occasion, I especially loved the writing on the walls which stated that there was no cake and that cake was a lie. Just ridiculous but so funny, something that was definitely needed as I got really frustrated with the game as I am terrible when it comes to puzzle solving. GlaDOS was the one bright spark that stopped me destroying my Xbox. A surprisingly funny entry that I am glad I experienced, even if I was hopeless at the actual game.
1st – Grand Theft Auto - Pick One!
I don't believe there is any game that is so jam packed with humour than the GTA series, literally everything from adverts to mission names to radio stations are filled to the brim with witty and funny jokes. My personal favourites are the radio stations, especially K-ROSE on the San Andreas game as they had some of the funniest lines I have ever heard. Country music is already funny but the presenter they had in between songs had me laughing so much the first time I played the game. But that is the same for every single radio station, and every website you go on, and every car you go in. There are references and side jokes everywhere you look, even the food is always called after some sexual innuendo.
One of the funniest things I can remember about Vice City is that in the police station you can find a massive pink dildo in the showers, that's just amazing. Seriously if you have the balls to put a massive dildo in your game as a weapon you deserve recognition. There is just so much to laugh at that I couldn't go through it all. Seen as it is Rockstar North is located in Scotland there are actually loads of Scottish references in the game that make it that bit more entertaining for us, such as FUD washing powder which in Scotland is a rude name for vagina. It is that kind of detail that makes games for me, also I'm a sucker for anything that appeals to a Scottish sense of humour which is dick jokes and slagging English people (the latter was sarcasm). So there you have it, the funniest game of all time is whatever GTA game you bloody well like.

You write a video game column and you don't know Bully 2 is on the way? Dan Houser revealed a few months ago that the plan was to have Rockstar Vancouver make Max Payne 3 and then move on to Bully 2

I know the shame of it! It must have just completely escaped my knowledge, but still true that it deserves to come back.
Damn good list, especially throwing in Banjo-Kazooie & Mega Man. I gotta toss in Turok, Vigilante 8, & Road Rash.

Turok was in the original list but I found out that there was a Turok game in 2008, which I hadn't heard about at all. And by all accounts it sucked, so I thought it was too soon to demand its return.
Shenmue III isn't happening. Get over it.

I couldn't really care less, but a lot of people loved the games and would like a 3rd instalment. Also I'm not 100% sure that you are actually Sega, call me crazy.
Gr8 list David, as usual. And on a side note, if I see anyone here critisize my David's list or say anything else but compliments to him I swear to God right now I will hunt you down and do horrific things to you. I am not joking, I will find you. I know jealousy is a horrible thing, but no one can be as gr8 as my David. I am soaked just thinking about him. So, really people, don't test me.

I just need to highlight how ridiculously funny this comment is. Wow.
I'd like to see a Dino Crisis game in the vein of RE4. Imagine those controls, graphics etc. but with dinosaurs. Instant win.
Also, it's Falcon Punch. Falco is the guy who hangs around with Star Fox. ;)

I totally agree if Dino Crisis got the Resident Evil treatment it would be insanely good. And thanks for clearing that up, I knew his name was Captain Falcon but his dictation is awful when he is physically abusing people.
"Also who wouldn't love to see more right wing nut jobs get annoyed at a bisexual gaming character?"
Yeah, because the left is a fucking bastion of tolerance.

That was more aimed at the Westboro Baptist Church assholes. Right or Left it is still ridiculous how much attention is given to something like sexuality, this isn't a politics article but idiot mothers getting annoyed because of something ridiculous like a sort of bisexual game character is just beyond fucking stupid.
I do agree with most of your list, David, except Viewtiful Joe. I thought that game sucked as hard as I would if I was in the same room as YOU for 15 seconds!!

I feel Larry or Jeremy are ribbing me here by letting this comment through.
