Average Gamer 6.29.2012: Summer of Gaming Part Two
Posted by Dan Watson on 06.29.2012

Welcome back to the Average Gamer. This summer I feel busier than I was last year and last year was the wedding, honeymoon, moving, etc. This summer at least is fun things to do for the most part. As I type this, it is 101 degrees outside and has tied the record set in 1971. I am sure it will surpass it here shortly. This weekend, I travel to the "Friendly Confines" of Wrigley Field. I hate this stadium. There is no parking facility so you have to pay whatever private lot owners want you to pay (usually $35-40) and then you are so boxed in that if you need to leave you cannot. To top that off, the staff there are terrible and just mean old people. What more can you ask for, I guess, when the team hasn't been a champion in over 100 years.

In the gaming world, I have been playing Gears of War, NBA 2K12, and have yet to open up Max Payne 3 still. Hopefully this weekend I can have some time to open it up and give it a fair shot. I haven't seen a review for it yet, so I will probably post one while I am at it.

Top 5 Non-gaming List

Last week I didn't get any takers on comments. This week, I am going to stick with the sports' theme and go with top hated players.

5. Lebron James This guy just bothers me. How can you consider yourself a king? Doesn't that right have to be given to you? I am sure there are more guys out there that have earned that title.
4. Carlos Boozer Just looking at him annoys me, but watching him play basketball is still worse. He is a terrible player and was only given the large contract because the team lost out on the big three.
3. Albert Pujols Look at his contract, now look at his numbers. Simple enough I would say.
2. Reggie Bush I still hate him from the USC days, his pro career just makes me laugh.
1. Alfonso Soriano He was the start of this generation's Cubs' decline. Terrible deal.

Arcade of Summer

Last week we took a look at retail titles and this week we are going to take a look at arcade titles. Most of these have not come out yet and are not remakes, but one or two may be out or remakes. Enjoy the list and please add in your own favorites at the bottom.

Hybrid

A multiplayer shooter from the Scribblenauts creators alone should sell millions but then toss in a cool story and you have a true hit of the summer. Here is the general story. "Hybrid is set in the post-apocalyptic year 2031, after an extinction-level asteroid collided with Earth wiping out billons. A single-celled alien bacterium buried deep within the asteroid spread into the atmosphere, infecting half of the survivors and turning them into the Variant, a genetically altered race. Six years later the Variant began a new world order and waged a massive global war against the immune populace, known as the Paladin." This game has awesomeness written all over it. Let's hope it plays out as well as it sounds.

Tony Hawk HD

I always enjoyed the Tony Hawk games. I never played the one with the board controller but the previous installments were always fun, especially early on. This game should be a ton of fun and bring back some great memories. It features stages from early on in the series plus a few new ones. This could be the summer remake if not for a game a bit further down the list. If you enjoyed the earlier titles in the Tony Hawk series, this game is for you. Let's hope that Spiderman makes a return in the game.

Dust: An Elysian Tail

Hmm, a side-scrolling RPG? That sounds interesting, however the visual appearance on this game is just the tip of the ice berg for how awesome the game is. This game looks amazing and the general idea here is just as good it seems like. Here is the synopsis. "Set in the beautiful yet mysterious world of Falana, Dust: An Elysian Tail is a 2D action-RPG game chronicling protagonist Dust's journey to liberate an oppressed village, and rediscover his past. He is aided by an ancient sword, Ahrah, and his helpful if unreserved sidekick, Fidget. Meticulously hand-animated and painted, this episode of Elysian Tail welcomes exploration, platforming, and above all else, mastery of a fighting system that rewards skilled gamers." Tell me that doesn't sell itself, go ahead. This game is going to be great and will end up being the game of the summer.

Quantum Conundrum

This puzzle game has already released on the PC and is coming soon to PSN and Xbox Live Arcade. It has gotten great reviews on the PC and should be equally as good on the console. Square-Enix created the game, which they have a pretty good track record so there is one more plus to this game. Couple that with great graphics and good sound and you have a summer winner.

"In the first-person puzzle platformer Quantum Conundrum , players must use the unusual ability to shift dimensions to navigate the twisting corridors of Quadwrangle Manor. Players take on the role of a young kid dropped off on his uncle's doorstep for the weekend; his uncle just so happens to be the brilliant, eccentric inventor, Professor Fitz Quadwrangle. Upon entering the Professor's vast manor home retrofitted with crazy technology to test his latest hypotheses, players quickly realize their uncle has gone missing. Fortunately, players soon gain access to Professor Quadwrangle's latest invention, the Inter-Dimensional Shift Device, which, at the press of a button, will shift the world around them to an entirely new dimension. In order to find him, players must use the newly found IDS Device to dynamically change the world to and from a variety of different dimensions to progress through the complicated Quadwrangle Manor. While on the journey, becoming adept at utilizing the various dimensions will help them trek from one bizarre and challenging room to the next. It might sound easy enough, but it is a tall order for a kid in a giant puzzle of a manor!"

Retro City Rampage

Do you enjoy open-world games? I do, and I enjoyed 8 bit games so this game is perfect. The game is the perfect parody of Grand Theft Auto. There are a total of fifty missions with thirty side missions/challenges. This game is going to contend for arcade title of the year but will probably fall short because parodies normally don't do well in the eyes of awards judges.

Thank you for reading. Next week we take a look at downloadable content and a few other arcade titles that will be coming later in the summer.
