411 Games Fact or Fiction 11.15.12: Black Ops 2, Wii U, Eternal Darkness 2, More
Posted by Daniel Anderson on 11.15.2012

Hello everyone and welcome to this week's edition of Fact or Fiction. As always, I am Daniel Anderson and I hope everyone has had a good week. This week saw the release of the yearly COD game. So far, Black Ops 2 is very enjoyable to me. Not game of the year or anything, but it is a fun FPS. Oh, this is the wrong zone, but it bares saying anyway, Skyfall is awesome. Anyway, this week we have 411's Chris Ferrell going up against Stephen Randle. Let's see what they have to say, shall we?

1.) The Wii U automatically shutting off by default after 90 minutes of no input is a bad idea..

Photobucket

Stephen Randle - Fiction: I don't get why this is a big deal. Apparently the fuss is that it still counts as "inaction" if you pause the game and wander off, which could lead to loss of unsaved progress. Maybe it just seems obvious to me, but if you're going to be away from your game for over an hour and a half, stay with me here, SAVE THE GAME AND TURN THE MACHINE OFF. It's not like we don't live in an age of games that auto-save every five minutes of anything. I mean, come on, what a waste of energy, leaving a console turned on and running for enough time that you could have watched a movie in the interim. You people probably leave the lights on when you got out too, don't you? I'm no massive environmentalist or anything, but seriously, it's completely unnecessary to leave your gaming system on all the goddamned time. These things have a "Power On/Off" button for a reason, you know.

Chris Ferrell - Fact: Sure it's a bad idea, but from what I've read you can change the idle time for auto shut off or even disable auto shut off. The first time someone pauses a game and leaves for a couple hours they will probably get angry when their progress is lost. But after that just change the settings. Hopefully Nintendo puts in the manual that by default your Wii U will shut down after 90 minutes.

Score: 0 for 1 - The only issue I see with this is if someone was watching a movie on Netflix or something like that. Then again, as has been pointed out, you can change the settings to extend the shut off time or even shut it off completely, so I don't see it being a big deal

2.) The latest ruling against Silicon Knights has killed any chance of an Eternal Darkness 2.

Photobucket

Stephen Randle - Fact: I would imagine that being forced to liquidate most of your existing catalogue, including some currently in development, would probably seriously retard your ability to remain an operating game developer, let alone worry about reviving older franchises. On the other hand, it's not like they have anything better to work on right now. But more likely, Silicon Knights will likely be out of business in the near future.

Chris Ferrell - Fact: Being ordered to destroy code and unsold games is a death sentence. This means any projects that were currently in development that use the Unreal engine must also be destroyed. Factor in they paid Epic $4.5 million in May and then another $4.7 million in court costs and Silicon Knights is done. Also, there are reports that the company only has 5 employees including the founder Denis Dyack. No, you won't be getting Eternal Darkness 2.

Score: 1 for 2 - I am sad to think that there will not be an Eternal Darkness 2, but after 10 years I am used to it. I think Silicon Knights just took over the top spot from THQ on the list of game companies about to go under.

3.) You were surprised to hear that Dishonored sold 460,000 units in October.

Photobucket

Stephen Randle - Fiction: Not particularly, it was getting favorable reviews and good buzz from the community, and it caught a good release window just before all the massive big titles started coming out. I wouldn't imagine the trend will continue into the coming months as Black Ops and Assassin's Creed and Wii U games start to dominate heading into the holidays, though.

Chris Ferrell - Fiction: Early reviews of the game were promising and there was a pretty good advertising blitz. I haven't played the game but from what I've seen it looked like the gameplay was fun if somewhat twisted.

Score: 2 for 3 - I really enjoyed this game. Not only did you get a steampunk game, but you also got to be a teleporting assassin. Oh, and to any of my friends reading this, no I did not utter "BAMF" when I had the character teleport.

4.) You like that Gamefly is now offering a digital PC client.

Photobucket

Chris Ferrell - Fact: Its probably a good thing to have if you subscribe to Gamefly. I'm not a subscriber so I thought ‘meh' when I heard the news. I do my PC gaming via Steam. I can buy games on sale on there most of the time so I haven't gone down the Gamefly route. I will say it was pretty cool of them to give away BioShock 1 for free at launch.
Stephen Randle - Fact: Technically, I'm neutral, leaning towards happy, because I'm a Steam devotee and I like where the market for digital distribution is heading, especially on the PC where the focus has been shifting away more and more as consoles become the prevalent gaming platform of choice. However, Canada's major Internet distributors still insist on keeping download caps on their services, so until that gets sorted out (and could they make our Netflix more comparable to the super-library it is in the States while they're at it?), I'll be forced not to explore things like this to their fullest extent.

Score: 3 for 4 - This has me interested enough to consider subscribing to Gamefly. I like the thought of being able to play some games on the PC without spending a lot of money to try a new game out (or having to wait for a Steam sale).

5.) You will be willing to check out the Diablo 3 expansion when it comes out.

Photobucket

Chris Ferrell - Fiction: That would require me to have played Diablo 3. I just recently got a PC that would play the game but I haven't purchased it yet. I was a diehard Diablo 2 fan so at some point I will pick up Diablo 3. I just have concerns that the real money auction house has made it so that the ideal loot is much harder to find now.

Stephen Randle - Fiction: And it's a damned shame too, because I was the #1 supporter of Diablo III around here. I warned my wife when we started dating, years ago, that Diablo III was coming and that it would steal me for a while when it eventually released. She let me buy it while we were on vacation celebrating our second anniversary. I played it for a few weeks and realized it was a soulless, dull, unimpressive monstrosity that had collapsed under the weight of expectations due to the first two iterations being totally awesome games. Sorry, Blizzard, you shot yourselves in the foot with D3, you're not getting my money for an expansion.

Score: 4 for 5 - I enjoyed the story in the game (even if it was predictable), and will check out the expansion when it comes out. Just because I will check it out however does not mean that I will spend hours playing it online.

6.) You will buy Black Ops 2 before you get a Wii U.

Photobucket

Chris Ferrell - Fact: I have to pick one here so its fact. I honestly have no interest in a Wii U. I want to try one out but I don't see it being an addition to my game systems. At the same time, I am just tired of the Call of Duty franchise, to me it's the same old game with new maps and a few new weapons. But, in the spirit of the question, I am more likely to purchase Black Ops 2 than a Wii U.

Stephen Randle - Fiction: I'm not buying Black Ops 2. I know, how can I call myself a gamer if I don't play Call of Duty, but there you have it. On the other hand, I fully expect to end up with a Wii U at some point, if not right away. The lure of some of my favorite franchises will, I expect, simply be too great.

Score: 4 for 6 - I picked up Black Ops 2 on Tuesday and played it some Tuesday night. I enjoyed the feel of the game, and it felt different enough to not bring to mind MW3. So far, I am enjoying Black Ops 2. I will eventually get a Wii U, but just not anytime soon. Too many things to pay for after moving to a new place to be able to justify the purchase of a new console to myself.

Bonus Question: What, if any, Black Friday deals interest you?

Chris Ferrell - Right now, not much in the Black Friday sales is interesting to me. The past couple of years I haven't even gone out for Black Friday. What I will probably do is check the online retailers on Black Friday and see if anything jumps out at me. Amazon and Best Buy had some good online only deals, and the biggest perk is I didn't have to leave my house and deal with the crush of people..

Stephen Randle - Um…Canadian. We don't have Black Friday, because we're not insane. Although WWE '13 for $25 would probably be enough to get me to pick it up.

That wraps up this week's edition of Fact or Fiction. Stephen and Chris went 4 for 6 agreeing more than disagreeing. I hope everyone has a good week, and until next week, happy gaming.
