The Average Gamer 12.11.12: Top Multiplayer Games of 2012
Posted by Dan Watson on 12.11.2012

Welcome back to the Average Gamer.

Talk about a Vikings' Victory Monday, nothing is better than celebrating a Vikings' win than doing it in Chicago after they beat the Bears. That was a hideous game though. As one of my peers wrote last week, it is sad that Peterson is averaging more yards per rush than Ponder is per reception. Yesterday, that didn't change at all. Peterson averaged near five yards per attempt, while Ponder was around four and a half yards per attempt. On top of that, Peterson also topped Ponder in total offensive yards. I don't see this team making the playoffs and honestly am starting to wonder who they can add or draft that can complete this offense. We are just a quarterback and strong receive away I feel like.

In the gaming world, I finally prestiged in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. It takes a while but then you get rolling after the prestige and in just a few hours I was back into the twenties. In other gaming news, I have been playing Halo 4, Borderlands 2, Madden 13 returned to my Xbox, and I have started playing Happy Wars. All in all, I have been gaming a ton lately.

Top 5

It is that time of the year where everyone is giving gifts and being happy. So, I am posting my top five things I would like for the holidays this year. Feel free to send them to me if you would like.

5. Money Who doesn't love money as a gift. The only problem I have with money right now, is all of it that I receive goes directly to the house savings account.

4. Gift Cards to food places You can't put a gift card into the savings account. These are ideal for me as I like to eat out on weekends and gift cards make the choice much easier as to where to go.

3. Ted I loved this movie in theatres. I am sure my memories are over-hyping it because I do remember feeling slightly let down, but overall it was a good experience.

2. Dark Knight Rises I missed this in the theatres, so it ranks up there on the list out of speculation and need to see the end.

1. Assassin's Creed 3 and Far Cry 3 I don't have either of these games and would like to play them both. Far Cry 3 ranks slightly higher as it has co-op and stronger multiplayer.

Top Multiplayer Experiences

This year was a pretty good year for multiplayer games. Many games this year made a valid attempt at adding multiplayer. Some of them did a really good job, while others not so much. So, without further ado, here are my top five multiplayer experience titles of the year.

5. Madden 13/NBA 2K13

Both of these sports titles did a great job of incorporating a multiplayer experience that was fairly memorable into their games. Madden took their Superstar mode and transformed it to fit into a perfect multiplayer experience. Now you could compete against friends in a race to the Hall of Fame as a coach or player while your friend was a different position.

In NBA 2K13, they took what was already great and made it better. Their online servers are some of the best with low lag or connection issues and tons of people. They find ways with promotions and gameplay to make you keep coming back. These two titles did what each sports game should be doing, find a way to get gamers to play for more than just a season.

4. Halo 4

Master Chief returned this year and brought with him a few new experiences. The inclusion of the Halo Ops Seasons is perfect to keep gamers coming back. The story is a bit lacking as of now and somewhat hard to follow but that doesn't mean it is any less fun. Also, Halo brought back their normal multiplayer versus modes with twists. This installment of Halo truly felt like they were focusing entirely on multiplayer and letting the single player campaign ride itself.

3 Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2

Huge open course racing, evading cops, and awesome graphics made this game a top multiplayer experience this year. Instead of having tracks to race on like other titles, you had check points to hit or goals to get to. There was no set way to get there which made the game that much better. In the end, this game was probably one of the best multiplayer racing experiences in a long time.

2. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

Call of Duty again brings their same formula with a few changes. This time, score streaks make it easier than kill streaks to get some of the fun perks. There are plenty of game modes as well for the versus games. The real difference here is the zombie mode. No longer are you stuck in a house, building, etc. This time you are in a town with a bus that follows a route. There are different settings and even one that you don't need the bus for. In addition, you can now build objects to help you stay alive as long as possible. This truly did improve the zombie mode and made the game a major improvement from previous installments.

1a. Borderlands 2

Borderlands 2 was just as fun and over the top as the original. The story didn't seem as amazing but the villain was one of the best video game villains in a long time. Jack had some of the best script I had heard and the easter eggs that involved him were even better. There is no versus per se but there is a ton of co-op with more on the way. Leveling up as a group is extremely fun and the boss fights are great as well.

1b. Mass Effect 3

I was extremely torn on which order to go with Mass Effect 3 and Borderlands 2. Both games combined took up a majority of my year with multiplayer fun. Even though Mass Effect 3 was nothing more than a 10 round glorified horde mode, it was still pretty awesome. The different promotions were what set this game apart from others. Very rarely does a company support a game so much after launch with weekly promotions and free downloadable content. I hear that the next DLC is set to be extremely well done but only time will tell.

Well guys and gals, that is it for me this week. We continue our snow-less winter right now and I am 100% okay with that. I hope we don't get snow until at least after January. I am perfectly okay with a drought this winter.
