411 Games Fact or Fiction 12.20.12: THQ, Street Fighter X Mega Man, Steam and More
Posted by Daniel Anderson on 12.20.2012

Hello everyone and welcome to this week's edition of Fact or Fiction. As always, I am Daniel Anderson, and I hope everyone has had a good week and has most of their Christmas shopping done. I only have a few more things left to pick up, and then a long drive to my family. Anyway, this week we have 411's Adam Larck going up against Gavin Napier. Let's see what they have to say, shall we?

1.) Steam allowing community created game guides is a good idea.

Photobucket

Gavin Napier - Fact: I remember the days of getting stuck on a game and being forced to refer to GameFAQs for help. It was quick, easily accessed, and the walkthroughs were usually pretty thorough. Steam's user community should be competent enough to handle the task, so I've got no issues whatsoever with them going this route.

Adam Larck - Fact: It sounds like a new version of GameFaqs to me. I could see this being helpful for people stuck in a PC game to just pull this up instead of trying to find a guide elsewhere. As long as people don't try to take advantage and make fake guides, there shouldn't be a problem with this.

Score: 1 for 1 - I think this will be like GameFAQs, but with Youtube videos to show what to do and not just someone typing page after page of instructions.

2.) The THQ Bundle selling 885,251 bundles and raising over $5 million is a success for THQ.

Photobucket

Gavin Napier - Fact: It's hard to figure how raising over $5 million dollars and getting your games into the hands of hundreds of thousands of people could be considered a failure. Will it be enough to maintain THQ as a standalone company that doesn't need to be absorbed by another publisher to stay in business? That remains to be seen. This does, however, open up a lot of new avenues for them. Reportedly, they're considering offering more Linux-friendly releases. With Steam becoming Linux-friendly in the near future, that can't hurt their future prospects, either.

Adam Larck - Fact: Probably one of the best successes the company has had in a while. I'm glad the Bundle did so well for them. THQ needs some help right now. Otherwise, they'll be going under sooner rather than later. Hopefully, this can keep them going for another year to let them get some of their big titles out, like South Park: The Stick of Truth, Company of Heroes 2 and Saints Row 4.

Score: 2 for 2 - Two hours before I posted this article it was released that THQ has filed for bankruptcy. At the moment though, Company of Heroes 2, Metro: Last Light, and South Park: Stick of Truth are still on schedule so at least we will have some games finished.

3.) The $24,999 price tag on Ebay for all SNES games (all in box with manuals included) is a fair price.

Photobucket

Gavin Napier - Fiction: That price comes out to roughly $35 per game. While that's not a ton of money, and actually a pretty good deal for some of the rarer releases, I can find a ton of these games at any one of four local flea markets within 30 minutes of my house for about two dollars each. That said, I don't begrudge the guy trying to make a buck. For me, there are much more affordable ways to play every SNES game ever released.

Adam Larck - Fiction: Out of all the games in that pack, maybe 10 percent if that have any actual value to them. The other ones could be picked up for a few dollars at most. I know the seller had made a comment that he had received offers of $15,000-$20,000, and that seems like a lot more reasonable offer than what he's asking.

Score: 3 for 3 - I have a hard time seeing the seller get his asking price for the collection. I think the seller will eventually remove the auction and repost it later at a lower price.

4.) G4 turning into the Esquire channel will end up making the channel more popular.

Photobucket

Adam Larck - Fiction: I doubt it. In fact, I'm still not quite sure how they're going to market to the crowd they want to. From what I saw, they want to bit the metrosexual crowd with cooking, technology and sports. Aren't these areas already being done better by other channels? I could see the Esquire channel falling quickly, but we'll see.

Gavin Napier - Fiction: I feel like it'll turn into a niche channel that moves away from what the current niche is. When I think Esquire, I think The Style Network for men. I think smarmy douchebags pretending to know about things that "real guys" are supposed to like, but getting it all wrong. I think the best option for most of G4's top content (X-Play, Attack of the Show) is to try to work out a deal with Spike TV and let the metrosexuals from Esquire pollute the airwaves without them.

Score: 4 for 4 - First SciFi (screw Syfy) and now G4. I think Syfy will outlast Esquire network and we will see another take on a video game channel.

5.) You will download Street Fighter X Mega Man when it is released.

Photobucket

Adam Larck - Fiction: It's already out now and still haven't. I may eventually check it out, but I'm not the biggest Mega Man fan out there. It sounds interesting though. Maybe once I catch up on some games I'll finally download this and check it out.

Gavin Napier - Fact. Fact fact fact. FACT: The seconds spent typing these words could be used to play Street Fighter X Mega Man. Capcom is a publisher that gets it. Giving their blessing to this project shows that they understand that not everything in the gaming industry has to be so serious all the time. There's still room for fun.

Score: 4 for 5 - I haven't checked the game out yet, but it is on my list. I have been too busy playing TEW 2013 to download a new game.

6.) The Glu Mobile shutdown of servers for several older games was handled poorly by publishers and Glu Mobile both.

Photobucket

Adam Larck - Fact: The more that comes out about this, the more it sounds like a he said, she said type deal. One side claims the rates went up without warning, while the other claims rates haven't changed in years. Why they weren't given any kind of notice of closer to give to gamers is still pretty odd, though. Hopefully, they can get it sorted out so players can get back to enjoying game servers.

Gavin Napier - Fact: I'm not sure how much publishers had to do with it, or how much notice they had, but I'm going to blame everyone involved for servers being shut down without notice. It's a bad business decision that will haunt them if there's any karma to be had. And if the world lasts past December 21st.

Score: 5 for 6 - This seems like a very messy situation that both sides of the issue will come out looking bad. Most gamers are not interested in who is to blame (and at this point each side of the issue is blaming the other) they just want to play their games and have fun.

Bonus Question: What are your plans for Christmas (or any holiday you choose to celebrate)?

Adam Larck - Just going to spend time with some family. Hopefully, I can make some more progress in Persona 4 Golden in my spare time. However, it'll be nice to see the family and just catch up.

Gavin Napier - I'll be working Christmas Eve and Christmas, so my celebrations will take place the weekend before and the weekend after. Mom's birthday is the 27th, so the weekend after Christmas will consist of a drive south and hopefully some home cooked meals for the weekend..

That wraps up this week's edition of Fact or Fiction. Adam and Gavin went 5 for 6 agreeing more than disagreeing. I hope everyone has a good week, and until next week, happy gaming and Merry Christmas.
