411 Games Fact or Fiction 02.7.13: Wii U, GTA 5, PS4, and More
Posted by Daniel Anderson on 02.07.2013
Is it disappointing that Grand Theft Auto 5 isn't coming out until September? Will the WII U get a price cut in 2013? Will the Warcraft movie be any good? 411’s Todd Vote and Tony Baldwin debate these topics and more in this week’s Fact or Fiction: Games!
Hello everyone and welcome to this week's edition of Fact or Fiction. As always, I am Daniel Anderson, and I hope everyone has had a good week. We had the Super Bowl at the start of this week, and with the exception of the power outage (which I would be willing to place money on it not happening next year at Wrestlemania 30), a good game broke out in the second half. Anyway, this week we have 411's Todd Vote going up against Tony Baldwin. Let's see what they have to say, shall we?
1.) You are starting to get excited about Injustice: Gods Among Us.
Todd Vote - Fact: What do you mean starting to? That would indicate that at one time I was not excited about the game. To be honest, I have been following it since the announcement was made last year... It's made by the team that did the fantastic reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise, plus it is set to feature one very pissed off Superman. What is not to be excited about, honestly?
Tony Baldwin - Fact: I've actually been excited about Injustice. First of all I love comics and have actually just gotten back to heavily playing DC Universe online with the new Home Turf expansion that just hit. I also really enjoyed the last Mortal Kombat game so this coming from the same team, and playing similarly is a plus as far as I'm concerned.
Score: 1 for 1 - I started off being fairly tentative about this game. I was curious how they could explain in a storyline why these heroes were fighting. As I hear more and more about the game and see more and more gameplay I am starting to get excited and interesting in picking this up.
2.) You agree with the WSJ that the PS4 will launch this year.
Todd Vote - Fiction: I am not entirely sold on the idea of this 2/20/2013 announcement necessarily being the PS4. Sony has went on record and stated that they are going to let Microsoft make the first move. Announcing the PS4 in February, and announcing that it is coming this year is not letting Microsoft make the first move. I will admit that most signs seem to be pointing to that fact, but I'm not fully believing yet.
Tony Baldwin - Fact: We've been in this current console cycle for what seems like an eternity and while I'm in no hurry to have to start shelling out for the new systems... the writing is on the wall so to speak. Developers are strangely very hush hush about what systems certain games are being developed for when you play close attention to interviews for future projects, games like Watch Dogs and Star Wars 1313 come to mind. When you add to this equation the fact that Sony has a private press conference scheduled for later this month, speculation naturally runs rampant. I for one think if we don't see the PS4 this year, then next year is a lock.
Score: 1 for 2 - I wonder about the PS4 being released this year. I keep thinking that Sony is going to let Microsoft announce the new Xbox before they announce the PS4. Only way we will find out is to see what happens on 2/20/2013.
3.) You were disappointed that GTA 5 was delayed until September.
Todd Vote - Fact: Yeah, of course I was. I can't wait to get my hands on the game. The sooner the better. That being said, I am okay with them taking more time to develop the game and make it the best game they can. The way they are tackling the campaign with the three protagonists is something fairly new to them, and I imagine wasn't easy to implement. I'm willing to wait, but it is definitely slightly disappointing.
Tony Baldwin - Fact: I have been waiting for this game more than any other. Hell, it will have been 5 years since GTA IV came out in just a couple of months. I've been a huge fan of the series since the days of the overhead view on the original Playstation and have played every single GTA that has been released for a home console. GTA 5 is the only game I have pre-ordered, with the game just 15 bucks from being paid off. Am I disappointed... what do you think?
Score: 2 for 3 - I am not surprised that GTA 5 got delayed. Everything felt a little rushed to make a Spring 2013 release date. The reasoning they gave, needing a little more polish, makes me wonder if there are issues with the game. Only time will tell.
Tony Baldwin - Fact: This is going to be short and sweet. I think the Wii U will have to see a price cut to survive, especially if Sony and Microsoft are about to roll out the new systems.
Todd Vote - Fiction: With all of stuff they just announced that got 90 percent of the gaming world reconsidering just how awesome the Wii U could be? Not a chance. There may be some new bundles created to add a bit more value to your purchase, but as far as a system price drop? I highly doubt it.
Score: 2 for 4 - Unless we start to see the Wii U tank with new games, the price will stay the same. Although Tony does bring up a good point about the Wii U surviving with the new Playstation and Xbox coming out.
5.) You have hopes that the Warcraft movie will be good.
Tony Baldwin - Fiction: I'm going to just come out and say that I never cared for any of the Warcraft games, honestly I hate RTS games. Now I'm going to go on to say that while I played WOW for a few months years ago, I walked away and never looked back. I really just didn't care much for the game. So when you factor my indifference to the games in with the fact that videogame based movies traditional suck, my answer is clear. I think it's safe to say the movie will be horrible, at least as far as I'm concerned.
Todd Vote - Fact: Absolutely. Anytime there is a game franchise turned into a movie, I have high hopes, and low expectations, as do a lot of gamers, I'm sure. Putting Duncan Jones in the director's chair is a step in the right direction. I haven't seen Moon, but thought Source Code was a very good flick. That being said, Warcraft is a different kind of movie altogether, so we shall see what he can do with it.
Score: 2 for 5 - There is a lot of story in Warcraft, and it is difficult to see how everything could be jammed into one movie and things not feel like they have been left out. I am not saying it can't be done, but it would be difficult.
6.) With EA delaying Fuse, taking Medal of Honor out of commission, and posting a large Q3 loss you are starting to worry about the company.
Tony Baldwin - Fiction: While THQ may not have been anywhere near the juggernaut that EA is, their demise should serve as a warning. The videogame industry is too competitive for companies to constantly roll out unimaginative rehashes and expect to just keep making the same kind of profit they always have. Maybe EA should start developing some new, creative titles and stop pushing out yearly roster updates and yawn worthy sequels. That being said they're still the king of the mountain and it's going to take a number of quarterly losses before anybody presses the panic button.
Todd Vote - Fiction: Not yet. EA has enough big franchises that they will be just fine. They took a chance on Medal of Honor last year. While the game was seemingly highly praised, it apparently just didn't reach sales expectations. EA will be looking to turn that around this year. Putting a non-selling IP out of commission is one step towards that.
Score: 3 for 6 - EA will be fine as long as more of their IP's do not start dropping in sales numbers. If we start seeing a trend, then we can start saying EA is in trouble.
Bonus Question: Feel free to talk about whatever you want.
Tony Baldwin - I touched on it earlier so let me just say that DC Universe Online is probably the best MMO out there that not enough people are playing, or talking about for that matter. The game initially suffered from a horrible launch, poor creative direction, and was hit hard by the legendary Sony Hack during its infancy. However, now over two years later, the game is going strong and is hardly recognizable when compared to what existed at launch. Also of note, is the fact that the people in charge clearly seem to know what they're doing now, and this coming from a guy who walked away from the game for about a year... add in it free and more people should give it a try. While I'm talking about online games I would also like to mention my intrigue with Defiance... it's definitely an original concept so here's hoping it turns out awesome.
Todd Vote - I know it is not gaming related, but have you checked out the new Netflix original series House of Cards? If not, I highly suggest that you do so. I am not normally into political dramas as far as my TV viewing, but this one is just kicking so much ass right now. Kevin Spacey is absolutely tremendous in the show, and you can tell he really dug into the role of Frank... Check it out, what have you got to lose?
That wraps up this week's edition of Fact or Fiction. Todd and Tony went 3 for 6, agreeing as much as disagreeing. I hope everyone has a good week, and until then, happy gaming.
