411 Games Top 5 03.15.13: Top 5 Most Anticipated Gaming Releases of 2013
Posted by Sean Garmer on 03.15.2013

Hello everyone, I hope it has been a good week for all the readers out there, the anticipation builds for all things gaming in the year 2013.

Honorable Mention: Grand Theft Auto V, Assassin's Creed 4

5. Deadpool

Comic cook-related games are generally high-risk, high-reward for me. Some of my favorites are comic book-related (I'm a fanboy, so go figure), but there have been a ton of them that are just terrible. Similarly, Deadpool is a notoriously tricky character to do right because he's so unlike most of his Marvel compatriots. That being said, everything related to this game just looks awesome. The trailers have Deadpool's style and attitude but look like they haven't skimped on the game itself either. This could fail disastrously, but nothing up to now suggests such.

4. Injustice: Gods Among Us

I'm a sucker for fighting games and the new Mortal Kombat is a favorite of mine. As I said above, I'm a comic book fanboy so a comic book fighting game automatically earns points with me. This looks great as it doesn't try to rely on established fighting franchises and just lets the DC heroes kick each other's asses all over the world, with a new storyline built into the game to boot. The list of heroes so far is impressive and I certainly can't wait to get my hands on this one.

3. Remember Me

A recent discussion panel on Geek & Sundry discussed the dearth of great storytelling in games, and I can't say that I disagree. It often seems like the game is created and then at the last second someone who took creative writing once is brought in to fill in the dots with just enough story to justify the action. Remember Me looks to rectify that. What we know of the the storyline so far--a "memory hunter" in 2084 Neo-Peris getting her own memories erased and trying to find out who she was--has a distinctly tech-noir feel, which is a genre of film I always tend to enjoy; the dystopian future doesn't hurt either. It's a great set-up that should lend itself to the idea of a game which integrates story and gameplay fluidly and I'm really hopeful that it will pull that trick off.

2. Watch Dogs

The only single concern I have with Watch Dogs is that the current-gen version will lack compared to the next-gen version being released at or around the same time. However, that's a pretty small concern, all things considered. Information warfare is a great idea for a game and the setting looks fascinating; everything we've seen so far about the game looks to be exceptional so far. Ubisoft is a company that very rarely disappoints and I'm expecting this to be more of the same on that front.

1. Playstation 4/Xbox 720

Come on, these bad boys are THE anticipated game-related releases of 2013. We know that the PS4 will be out for the holidays and it is impossible to imagine that Microsoft's next-gen Xbox won't be the same. Of course, we don't know what the Xbox will have as features and we don't know what the PS4 looks like, but everything so far has seemed pretty good and the fact that used games won't be banned is a big step in the direction of confidence. There was no question of #1 for me.

5 - E3:

Don't we always anticipate this? Its the biggest games show of the year and features near everything we want over the next year and then some. We get to see new game reveals (though these tend to happen in the run-up thanks to leaks nowadays), we get to see new gameplay, if you're there you'll even get to play some. We get to see the companies we support tell us why we should keep supporting their franchise. Plus we all enjoy the arguments after about who 'won'

4 - Steam Box:

I'm pretty sure I won't even get this but I'm damn sure curious to see how people take to it. If it takes of it would change the gaming landscape. I expect there'll be issues with the first one though so I'll wait for the 2nd generation but its still the most exciting completely new thing happening.

3 - Vita Price Drop:

I want it, I want it, I want it. Sure this might not even happen I'm just crossing my fingers based on Japan drop and console life. I wanted a Vita since launch and the fact the Plus is throwing all the best games at me for free makes me want it even more, hell I've probably got enough unlocked games now that I wouldn't need to purchase any for months.

2 - New Xbox:

Now whilst I am going to be brand loyal to Sony for launch Microsoft have 1 year from then to make everyone else tell me why the Xbox is better. Fact is new consoles are exciting and for all I know Microsoft may produce the best one with the best games in which case I'd be a fool not to make it my leading console. So bring it on, lets see what its got.

1 - PS4:

Bah, living in Britain we probably won't get it till a year from now :-( at least I get to see everyone's initial reactions and won't get duped into a crummy launch game. It all looks very exciting no? What I most love about new consoles is whilst it always feels like a step up initially, its not till the 3rd year that you really start to notice it, those games will shame the likes of Watch Dogs + Killzone 4.

5.GTA V - I am greatly anticipating GTA V. The idea of three protagonists that I can switch between at any time I choose really intrigues me. I can't wait to see how they will bring it all together.

4.Deadpool - The Merc with the Mouth finally getting a standalone game? Count me in. From everything I have seen on this game, they appear to have nailed just what it is that makes Deadpool great. Whether it be his breaking the 4th wall, or his trademark humor, this one looks like it will be a home run.

3.Watch Dogs - Like most, I was blown away by the E3 2012 demo of this game. The only downfall I see with this is that it may now be a next gen only game. I know it will be a PS4 launch title, but I am holding out hope that a decent version of the game will come out on the current generation as well.

2.The Walking Dead: Survival Instincts - I know this will not be the same game that TellTale did with the license, but I am still looking forward to it. A chance to gun down zombies as the Dixon brothers seems like a good starting off point for the game. I just hope they remember that the walkers are only a small, small part of what makes The Walking Dead great.

1.Injustice: Gods Among Us - I am a big fan of Mortal Kombat. I was also one of the few people who liked MK vs. DCU. I thought they did a decent enough job bringing the two worlds together. So when it was announced that the team who brought us the MK reboot would be handling a fighting game featuring a cast of DC characters I was interested. From that point on, everything that I have seen about this game has just brought more and more interest from me. April 16th can't get here soon enough.

5. Tales of Xillia - I have a love/hate thing with the Tales of series, *I love you Tales of Graces F, FUCK OFF TALES OF LEGENDIA!* Tales of Xillia has been out for a few years in Japan and not only is it one of the bestselling Tales of titles in years, it also received a near perfect score from Kotaku. Hopefully everything holds up in translation and this ends up as one of the "love" entries in the series.

4. Dragon Age III: Inquisition - Yes, Bioware stumbled with Dragon Age II, but I'll be damned if Dragon Age: Origins wasn't one of the best games I ever played. Word is the third entry will be an amalgamation of the first two games and will also be massive, being highly influenced by Skyrim. Not a bad thing, if you ask me and hopefully this will redeem Bioware of the hiccup that was Dragon Age II.

3. Dragons Crown - A 2D Side-scrolling beat em up similar to Golden Axe? In this day and age? Yes, please! Vanillaware has crafted beatiful 2D graphics in both Odin Sphere and Muramasa: The Demon Blade, this still holds true in Dragon's Crown. Although while the previous games held a style similar to other traditional fantasy setting, Dragon's Crown has taken a left turn at Albuquerque and looks like it was influenced by the likes of Conan the Barbarian and Heavy Metal Magazine. Also, did I mention it's a 2D beat em up? How can I not be excited!

2. Dark Souls II - I jumped onto Demon's Souls a little late, let's just say a little too late, I just beat the damn thing about a month ago, Dark Souls is next in line, and god-willing, I'll be done by the time Dark Souls II arrives. Regardless if I do or not, Dark Souls II will be a day one purchase for me. Fantasy setting, a hardcore challenge, and sometimes just plain gamer torture, that somehow equates to video game crack for me.

1. Bioshock: Infinite - Yes, it's only weeks away, yes, it's just the beginning of the year, and yes, there is a huge amount of games that still haven't even been announced, I don't care. This is the game I'm anticipating the most this year, and yes I know there is a new Gears of War, GTAV, and a Final Fantasy XIII sequel. After the greatness that was System Shock 2 and Bioshock, I don't think anything else has my attention as much as Bioshock Infinite. Making the wait of a couple of weeks feel like a freaking eternity!
