Four Player Co-op 08.21.13: Kinect, Sunday Ticket, WWE 2K14, More
Posted by Stephen Randle on 08.21.2013
Are we happy to see Daniel Bryan on the alternate cover for WWE 2K14? Should Microsoft give up on Kinect now that it's optional? Why won't NFL Sunday Ticket be on next-gen consoles? The 411 staff debates these topics and more in the latest 4PC!

Greetings, and welcome to another edition of Four Player Co-op, where we are pretty sure that we could speak more German than anyone from Microsoft, Sony, or EA who presented at Gamescom yesterday. And we wouldn't need cue cards to do it, either.
Start the game!
QUESTION ONE: First off, the continuing story of Microsoft backing up so fast I can hear the loud beeping noise from here. This time, they have announced that the Kinect will no longer be required to be connected to the XBOne in order for the console to work, once again reversing their previously held position in the face of negative responses. Of course, the Kinect will still be packaged with every XBOne, and the price as a result will still be $499, but hey…at least you'll have one, I guess. Don't forget, they made Kinect mandatory so that publishers would have an incentive to include motion functionality in their games, but now…should Microsoft just give up on trying to make the Kinect more than the little-used novelty it is?
I think they should quit looking to make the Kinect the wave of the future for gaming, but if they are fast enough, maybe they can explore other options. Just typing "Kinect hack" into YouTube reveals all kinds of creative things being done with the tech, so it would be easy to see Microsoft exploring some other avenues, like maybe more complex Skype integration or maybe even an undiscovered use in the medical field of some kind. Just because it was a failure in the gaming community doesn't mean it isn't an impressive system, it just needs to find its place in the world, and Microsoft has the deep pockets to search for it.
If it will get me a cheaper launch version of the Xbox One, then yes. If not, then I would appreciate if someone would find a way to implement it into the games in a way I can use and enjoy. It only takes one killer app to turn an item from novelty to necessity. I mean if I am going to have to buy the damn thing anyways, give me a reason to want it.
I see the Kinect making a comeback in a few years after the Xbox One install base is there and becoming mandatory again. Microsoft doesn't want the Kinect to be like the PlayStation Eye and basically be worthless. They see something that has value and they want developers to take note and use it. Plus, I've even found a use for it from time to time. So, no, I can't see Microsoft giving up on the Kinect and they shouldn't.
This follows perfectly with how Microsoft has handled this console release entirely. For starters, they have changed every issue that the general public has had a problem with. Maybe if we all complain enough, they will drop the price too. How many gamers can afford $499 for a console? Secondly, this makes sense that the company will release a second generation package that doesn't include the Kinect and makes the consumer happy and saves them $100. Kinect has fooled me once already this generation. I thought it was going to be the next greatest thing in gaming and guess what, haven't used it in over a year. If the room isn't lit like a second sun, the device has issues. Also, if you aren't in a small gymnasium, you will be constantly bumping into each other. Why couldn't Microsoft have done more with actual gaming and less with gimmicks?
In more interesting news, "Kinect" makes it through my spell-checker, so good work, Microsoft Office guys. Anyway, Todd gets 542 points for at least reminding us that if there are good Kinect games (and Fantasia: Music Evolved looks pretty good), the peripheral will survive. The question is, will anyone bother making good Kinect games?
QUESTION TWO: And it goes on like this, as Microsoft has also announced that they will be scaling back the number of countries that will be getting the XBOne on launch day from 21 down to 13, due to problems with language support and also they admitted that the original projections were overly "aggressive". So, if you live in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland, you're out of luck until 2014, but at least you'll get a free game if you pre-ordered a launch day console. Cutting out half of Western Europe from your launch seems like a bad idea for a console that already has problems gaining a foothold outside of North America, but maybe it's just me?
I think it would have been a bigger mistake had it happened with the Xbox 360, as all the people who would have had to wait would have got to hear about all the RRoD horror stories in advance, and would have had time to cancel their pre-order in favor of a PS3 (and it's YLoD). Announcing how they are making up for it in the same breath as announcing the delay helps to soften the blow, but the cynic in me has to wonder about the quality of the choice for "a free game" is going to be. Battlefield 4? Awesome. Shovelware XBLA titles? Not awesome.
Man, and I thought I hated Microsoft... Quizmaster really seems to have it out for them this upcoming generation. This does seem like a bad idea, but I think those countries would rather get it late than get it broken. remember the 360 launching with all those problems? If delaying the release reduces the chances of that, then it is a good thing.
Microsoft is just trying to secure a better foothold in stronger markets for them before spreading out. The good news is that it's region-free they've announced, so you may be able to find and import one if you have a friend in an area with the system. However, Microsoft better be quick with getting systems to these areas if they want any kind of sales at all there.
I am going to disagree, Quizmaster. First, if you have a shortage of consoles already in the area where you are strongest, then why not remove some of the other areas that are used to getting things a bit later and release more consoles in the markets that the console is selling well in. This allows for greater supply and more sales in North America and may upset a few consumers overseas but how many were going to purchase to begin with. I am okay with this move.
Todd, I take offense to the idea that I'm not fair and balanced towards Microsoft. If Sony would spend all week making announcements that create intense debate, we could talk about their mistakes as well. But they aren't.
QUESTION THREE: Hey, remember how Microsoft talked a lot about how they have a partnership with the NFL somehow involving their consoles over the next few years? Well, apparently that doesn't actually involve football games, as the NFL has announced that their Sunday Ticket service will not be available for current or next-gen consoles, neither Microsoft nor Sony, until next year at the earliest. I'm not sure what that partnership is, but you would have thought Sunday Ticket would be involved, wouldn't you?
No. As a recovering NFL addict, I know all too well how much money they make off of Sunday Ticket, and they will want to keep as much money to themselves on that as they can, not to mention they don't want to dive head first into bed with Xbox after all the controversies lately. I would be far more surprised if they never planned to include something like Red Zone, as that would fit better with the "Play games, pause to check the score, go back to playing" motif they are going for.
Hell at this point, who knows. Microsoft has done themselves zero favors in the way they announced everything with the Xbone, why are we surprised they would be shady about this one? Maybe Microsoft's deal gets them exclusive access to Thanksgiving day games? Who the hell knows?
I think this is less of a problem with the NFL, and more of a problem with DirecTV. Don't forget that the service is not directly through NFL, but comes from DirecTV. This could be a negotiation problem between NFL and DTV or with DTV and Sony/Microsoft. Either way, look for it to be back next year in some form would be my guess.
I would have thought so, but I guess Microsoft is just giving the NFL Network or something along those lines. Each day I have gotten on Xbox they have reminded me that there is NFL news videos on the right side of the main screen. We should have known though that the NFL was going to give rights to the Sunday Ticket or actual live game footage without some upcharge for consumers and some time to build interest.
Adam gets 2684 points for providing the answer that I suspect may be correct, but I don't really want to get involved in the murky world of cable TV negotiations, because it seems like every four months some channel is in danger of being dropped from someone's cable package.
QUESTION FOUR: So WWE 2K14 ran an alternate cover contest and surprise, surprise, the winner was…Daniel Bryan. Your thoughts on the victory?
I love the guy. I wouldn't say he's an all-time favorite, but he is absolutely one of the best in the business today, so he certainly deserves it. I just hope this isn't a fan phase, and it truly is a transition into the next "generation" of the WWE like they are building it up to be. As this is being typed before SummerSlam, I am going with my gut and saying Vince accidentally costs Cena the match, only for Triple H to pedigree Bryan and have Orton come down for the cash-in. Or something even more over-booked. Hopefully this will be the match/moment to cement Bryan's status in the Main Event for years to come, at least.
I heard after the announcement Triple H delivered a Pedigree, then Randy Orton used his Cover in the Bank case to steal it away from him... Yes, I am a little bitter about Sunday night.
Randy Orton will cash in and take it over from him, with HHH in the background.
I'm not shocked but am disappointed. I have nothing against Daniel Bryan, I just think video game covers should be more intense looking than a guy on the cover. If it was Daniel Bryan performing a running kick to the head of Cena, I would be all for it, or coming off the top rope, but just standing there, they just seemed so generic. If we are going to go with a generic shot of a wrestler, I would have thought Taker or Kane would have had a better image. Also, if you would have put a Diva on the cover that would have sold to more teenage boys and AJ Grey than any other wrestling game. Toss AJ on the cover and it works out well.
I guess we have to give 3426 points to John, who basically picked the finish for SummerSlam (yes, he submitted his answers before the show, I promise). Well, almost. It's a shame, though, because at the last second, Triple H swooped in and stole those points and also every other point earned this week. Because he's The Game, apparently.
BONUS QUESTION: From famine to feast, a metric tonne of games are either on shelves or on their way shortly, including Disney Infinity, Saint's Row IV, Gone Home, Mario and Luigi Dream Team, and Final Fantasy XIV is back in open beta ahead of an end-of-month launch date. So, what are you playing?
I am currently scrambling to play catch up on a lot of stuff; I just recently finished Assassin's Creed II which was fantastic, and now I'm on to Lego Batman 2 for a more relaxing game. Looming over me, however, is my 3DS and the library I've assembled for it; Code of Princess, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, Project X Zone, and Shin Megami Tensei IV, NONE of which I've completed yet. I told myself I had to beat at least one of them before getting Animal Crossing: New Leaf, but I don't know... it's just too damn cute to resist much longer...
I will be playing Saints Row IV starting Tuesday evening, and I can't wait.
Saints Row IV right now. Been loving that game and can't wait to hop into it more with friends. Other than that I'm playing Mario and Luigi: Dream Team off and on and may check out Disney Infinity soon.
I'm typing this from my work desk on Tuesday right now, anxiously waiting to pick up Saints Row 4. Previous to today, I was playing NCAA 14, Dead Island: Riptide, and a few iPad titles. Saints Row 3 was one of my favorite titles to screw around with and plan on enjoying this one just as much.
Please wait…Host is calculating scores…
