411 Games Top 5 10.19.13: Top 5 Funniest Games
Posted by Sean Garmer on 10.19.2013
From Saints Row IV and Secret of Monkey Island to Discworld, Clay Fighter and more, the 411 staff counts down the top 5 funniest games of all time!
Hello everyone, I hope it has been a good week for all the readers out there. Everyone loves a laugh.
This week the 411 staff were asked to come up with lists for the Top 5 Video Games That Made You Laugh
*Laughing is a wonderful part of life that can occur in almost anything we do. So, I figured it had to apply in Video Games as well, if a staff member could explain why the game was funny or why it made "you" laugh it counts.*

5.Grand Theft Auto series - though the series has taken a more serious turn with the two recent games, GTA still is one of the best gaming franchises when it comes to satire. So many subtle things in this series crack me up. If you have GTA V, try taking the Vinewood tour bus for a spin.
4.Clay Fighter - Back when fighting games were at the height of their popularity, Interplay graced us with this gem that was a send-up of all other fighting games. The game poked fun at fighting game giants of the time like Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter II.
3.Earthworm Jim - Eat Crow! Earthworm Jim is probably one of the earliest games I played to feature an outlandish funny story. Why oh why hasn't anyone made a new Earthworm Jim game?
2.The Adventures of Captain Smiley - By far one of the funniest DL only games I have ever played, Smiley kept me laughing from start to finish. Such an obliviously egotistical character, Smiley offered plenty of laughs.
1.Saints Row Series - While GTA has taken on a more serious tone lately, the Saints Row franchise has went in the complete opposite direction. Saints Row has gotten progressively more ridiculous as the series goes on, with Saints Row IV cranking up the crazy meter to a million. One of the things I enjoyed most playing through the SR games was the humerous interaction among the different members of the Saints. Oh, and Pierce. Who gives a F*&$ about Pierce?

Since Humor is one of the most subjective facets of human existence, I have chosen to discuss the five games that havemade me laugh the most, but were not necessarily meant to be humorous (your mileage may vary, et cetera.)
Honorable Mentions; Conker's Bad Fur Day, Superman 64, Mario Party (series), NFL Blitz
5. Super Paper Mario
-About as plot-filled as a Mario game can be, Super Paper Mario is probably the game with the cleanest (most innocent?) humor on my list. It's something the whole family can enjoy, which was nice for when I was living with my family. It was a game I didn't have to worry about playing in front of them, which is still something fairly rare, even in this era of gaming as a subculture-gone-mainstream. From inside jokes, to goofy plot twists, and even some good-natured self-deprecation, SPM is a fine addition to an already funny and well-loved series of games.
-As a kid, many things will make you laugh. Fart noises. People falling over. A cat chasing a dog. These things are not necessarily meant to be funny, but the underlying key to all humor is the experience of something unexpected. Banjo-Kazooie was the first time playing a game that I can remember, as a kid, thinking "Wow, this is really clever," after laughing until I turned red. Everything from the banter between Kazooie and Bottles to Grunty's rhymes shine in this game. You can become a washing machine, for pete's sake.
-Talk about a gold mine. No other game has ever inspired so much creativity, and so much content production, as Minecraft. If you've only ever played Minecraft alone, this may be a bit of a head scratcher, but those that have played with friends online, or even made friends through MP servers on Minecraft know there is much hilarity to be had in Minecraftia. Even if you don't like playing Minecraft, you ought to be able to find something funny in the *literally* thousands of people posting video content of it on YouTube. That's how I was actually introduced to the game, WAY WAY BACK in 1.6 Beta days (almost three years ago?) I found a channel called Hat Films, and since then I've constantly had something to laugh at with Minecraft. It really is like the LEGO of the video game realm.
2. Fable II
-It's hard to believe Fable II is five years old now. Rather, its hard to believe that a lot of games haven't capitalized on a lot of the things Fable II did so well in the last five years. It was a morality play that simultaneously had a serious element to it but also didn't take itself TOO seriously. There are many things I could mention that made me laugh in the game; the demon doors, wooing random strangers, those annoying gargoyles, even the town crier when he says "The time is!... VERY LATE." The game oozes charm, and you just can't help but laugh out of sheer genuine amusement.
1. You Don't Know Jack (the first two or three)
-There have been very few times that I laughed myself into hysterics; red all over, tears rolling down my cheeks, inability to breathe. The first weekend my brother and I owned You Don't Know Jack, it happened three times. THREE TIMES. The writing was fantastic, the rules of the game were perfect, it's absolutely one of the best trivia games ever made. The more recent entries into this series have felt a bit try-hard, but they still have their moments. I will never forget the first time I "screwed" someone into answering, and the look of utter shock and frustration on their face.

5.Discworld series - The adventures of Rincewind and the luggage (in the first two games, anyway) kept me hugely entertained and as a Discworld fan, even the jokes about the characters and places within the universe made me chuckle. Still delightful games to play.
4.Portal 2 - Oh, man. Portal 2 is one of my favourite games and along with Left For Dead, is another game I'd rather see Valve complete the trilogy for before they go to Half Life. Anyway, your journey back through the Apeture labs and escaping the complex once and for all, with Glad0s in tow this time, was hysterical in so many ways.
3.Trials Evolution - Remember when I said that my list is games that made me laugh? Well, Trials did in spades. Even the most tenuous levels were made all the more amusing with a physics engine that ensured no two deaths were ever the same, some of them were downright hilarious.
2.Saints Row IV - If you only play one open world sandbox game this year, make sure it's Saints Row IV. Sure, GTA V is the better accomplishment and I don't want to compare the two games, but I had more sheer joyous fun playing Saints. Even 10 minutes in, as I climbed a launching rocket while everyone in the series said their goodbyes to me as "I Don't Want to Miss A Thing" by Aerosmith blared away in the background, I was playing through tears. Love it or hate it, SR4 really tickled me and I loved every minute of it.
1.Monkey Island - I really, really hope that the Monkey Island games are as revered in the US as they are in the UK. The sheer stupidity of some of the characters, the tongue in cheek mocking of LucasArt's own franchises, the insult sword fights and pretty much every single thing placed in this perfect point and click adventure was there to bring a smile to your face. Which is appropriate, because you fight like a cow.
