Ask 411 Games 07.18.06: Peach/Toadstool, Mario vs. Sonic, & More
Posted by Jamie Lyons on 07.18.2006
Tally ho chaps! And welcome to the premiere edition of Ask 411 Games, with me, your host, Jamie “Mighty” Lyons. This week we discuss Mario, Sonic and find out who has appeared in the most video games!
As this is the debut, it will be a shorter column than usual as I've taken the questions from the Forum rather than Email, so here goes….
Penguin writes: "Why did Princess Toadstool change her name to Princess Peach?" Ask 411 Writes: In Japan, The Princess debuted as Princess Peach but when Super Mario Bros. was released in the US and UK, the name was changed to Princess Toadstool. A lot of people think this is probably because she is princess of the mushroom kingdom and a toadstool is a type of mushroom. The English translation of Yoshi's Safari was the first usage of the name Peach outside of Japan. Although Nintendo has tried, (in the UK at least) the name Peach has never really stuck.
What game character has appeared in the most games? Ask 411 Writes: Originally, I thought The Undertaker (of WWE/F fame) was going to rank pretty high on this list, appearing in a whopping 33 titles, however that's nothing compared to our winner, the fabulous Mr. Mario Mario who has appeared (including cameos) in a staggering 92 games! And as Plumbers charge by the hour, he must be raking in the dough.
What is your favorite game that nobody has ever heard of? Ask 411 Writes: I have to say, without a doubt that it's the Suikoden series (1 and 2 anyways). Although the graphics were not the best, the storylines and gameplay were; in my opinion; spectacular. I still pick up and play these games every now and again, unfortunately Suikoden III was never released in the UK and Suikoden IV sucked major monkey ass!
Is there a future for point-click adventures? Ask 411 Writes: I enjoy point-click adventures, the only 2 I can think of off the top of my head are the Discworld and Broken Sword games, and both provided me with hours of entertainment growing up. Although I haven't really heard of any in a while, given the right story and/or franchise; point-click adventures could still be a major part of today's gaming market.
Will 007 Writes: Why is my shirt on backwards? Ask 411 Writes: Because you're a complete ‘tard. Next!
Who would win in a fight, Mario or Sonic? Ask 411 Writes: So, in a battle to the death between a super-sonic, talking hedgehog and a middle-aged, overweight plumber you're asking who would come out on top?
Even with a Power Flower or Raccoon Tail, Mario just wouldn't be able to keep up with our spiky blue friend. Mario might hold out for a while if he managed to pick up an Invincibility Star but Sonic would wipe the floor with our mustached.
That's all for this week people. Send any feedback or comments to lyonsjamie@msn.com just remember, the column won't really kick off until I get some real questions from you lovely people. Hopefully, next weeks columns will be full to bursting and so long that the idiotors er, um..editors won't read it, they'll agree to post it!
Every week I will be answering 10 or so questions relating to Games and the gaming world (don't feel obliged to limit yourself to JUST video games either). I don't mind fact or opinion based questions, so get those emails coming in: lyonsjamie@msn.com!
