411 Top 5 Games Edition 03.02.07: Week 29
Posted by Vincent Chiucchi on 03.02.2007

Welcome to another edition of the Top 5. This week, we look at the people behind the games as the staff list the Top 5 People in the Game Industry.

Sean McCabe, The Retrospective

5. Tomonobu Itakagi
Boobs, nuff said.

4. Shinji Mikami
Creator of Resident Evil, Godhand, Okami, PN03, Devil May Cry. One of hell of a developer.

3. Gunpei Yokoi
Creator of the Game and Watch series, Metroid, the Gameboy, and, um, the Virtual Boy. Oh well, he was still an important guy, RIP Gunpei Yokoi.

2. Hideo Kojima
Shows that video games can have good, non-retarded or simplistic stories. MGS for the win.

1. Shigeru Miyamoto.
Do I really need to say anything?

Morakoth Tang, Reviews (Capcom Puzzle World)

5. Satoru Iwata
He's the man with the plan that's bringing Nintendo in a whole new direction.

4. Will Wright
Sim City, Sims, Spore...he's a genius.

3. Hiroshi Yamauchi
Nintendo Head figure that is older than time!!!

2. Shinji Mikami
Resident Evil, the one that started it all. It spawned other great titles in it's genre.

1. Shigeru Miyamoto
Because of Donkey Kong, Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, for goodness sake Pikmin!!!

Cory Moore, The Fun Factor

5. Bill Gates
I may get criticized on this one, but I admire Bill Gates taking a chance with video games when nobody really gave Microsoft a chance. His wallet's commitment to the Xbox project has really made it a viable competitor with some great innovations that will be felt in the gaming industry for years to come.

4. Reggie Fils-Aime
Reggie's no nonsense approach is just the edge Nintendo needed when no one else internally wanted to step up to the competition. I think he's only scratched the surface of what he's capable of.

3. Will Wright
Spawning The Sims was perhaps the best thing the Sim City creator could have ever done. And Spore looks like it might be the best original concept in years.

2. Naoto Oshima
It is a shame that the designer Sonic the Hedgehog and NiGHTS is not as well known outside of gaming circles. He has tremendous vision and is truly a creative genius.

1. Shigeru Miyamoto
Creating Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Star Fox has to mean something in the video game world, right? So why not the #1 spot on Top 5 People in the Game Industry?

Vincent Chiucchi

5. Gunpei Yokoi
The father of the handheld that would forever dominate the market, the Metroid franchise, and unfortunately the Virtual Boy. It's sad that we've lost this man as he could've done so much more, and perhaps his last idea, the Bandai Wonderswan, would be a competitive rival.

4. Alexey Pajinov
He created THE Tetris! He also created many other puzzle games on MSN Game Zone, but he'll forever be known mostly for Tetris, one of the most addictive games ever where he didn't get any credit or royalty until ten freaking years after he created it.

3. Will Wright
I declare this man the king of PC Gaming. Sim City, The Sims, and the soon to be released Spore, Will Wright is simply a freaking genius.

2. Shigeru Miyamoto
Miyamoto has created more AAA franchises than anybody. Between Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Star Fox, Nintendo is revolved around this guy alone. He also brought back video games after the crash of '83.

1. Nolan Bushnell
Because if not for this man, the other four on this list would not be recognized. Ralph Baer invented the video game system, but Bushnell's genius led to the true birth of the video game market. That and he created Chuck E. Cheese.

Across the board, everyone recognizes Shigeru Miyamoto as an important person (THE most important?) to the industry. Will Wright also has multiple votes for his excellence with everything "Sim", and Spore is sure to be a truly wonderful game when released.
