411 Top 5 Games Edition 03.23.07: Week 31
Posted by Vincent Chiucchi on 03.23.2007

Welcome to another edition of the 411Games Top 5. Last week I was offering the Simpsons rom and I've had plenty of requests for it, further proving that Konami should've ported it to a console. Amongst the requests was also a bit of feedback on our Top 5.

"Number10OE":

i was reading about the arcade games and you talked about WWF WRESTLEFEST. Yes it was a great game!!! Its been years and years since ive played that in the arcade but just like you i can ALSO hear that guys voice saying MR PERFECT...PERFECTPLEXXX......BUT my phrase that I personally remember the most is what I thought was "WARRIOR DROPKICK". hahahha great article, great game!!! Too bad that never game to consoles, hopefully it comes to GAMETAP under the arcade section.

Josh Bruno:

Vinny,
great article. I sure miss the days of rolling into an arcade with a pocket of quarters and wasting time. Arcades seem like a dying breed around here. Anyway, I feel you ommitted a few great arcade games like:

1. Street Fighter 2. Only one of the greatest fighter games ever, with a great variety of different characters.
2. Mortal Kombat: This was HUGE in the arcades. I was never a big fan, but it was always fun to see people do the "FINISH HIM" finishing blow.
3. Dungeons and Dragons: I dumped way too many quarters into this one, but it was addicting, multi-player & fun. No regrets.

You sure like your shooter games don't you? Are you a cop or hitman in your day job? Keep up the great work!

Josh in Sacramento

I never really played Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter 2 in the arcades, and I never heard about an arcade D&D. As for why I like shooting games, it's either because video games are training me for the day when I finally shoot up my school and create a massacre 10 times the factor of Columbine...or because you rarely get that kind of fun for consoles.

"D":

Even though everyone's top five is wrong, I would love a copy of The Simpsons rom. For the record, from someone who was around back in the good old arcade days, the top five arcade games are...

5. Joust
4. Mikie (hard to find, but well worth the effort)
3. Lucky & Wild
2. Road Blasters
1. Super Street Fighter II

Now I don't mind if people disagree with our lists, but what bothers me is that you might of read our top 5 wrong. It was the top 5 arcades games we PLAYED, as in our personal favorites. If we were doing top 5 arcade games of all time, then it probably would've been a lot different.

Now on to this week's Top 5: Best Controllers.

Ramon Aranda, Previews (Fable 2), Reviews (Tecmo Bowl) and News

5. Mouse/keyboard - Works like a charm for most games though the keyboard can be a pain sometimes. Generally speaking though, you can't get better FPS or RTS play than with a mouse and keyboard.

4. NES controller - A simple controller for simpler games in a simpler time. Two buttons, the first D-Pad and you know you got innovation man!

3. SNES controller - This thing was very comfortable and easy to play with. Street Fighter II played like a dream on the Super Nintendo.

2. Xbox 360 controller - Talk about a well made controller. This thing looks good and feels good. Perfect amount of weight and built tough. Wireless too!

1. Wii remote - C'mon guys...there's no cooler way to play than with the Wii's innovative remote...hell even your ma and pa can get down with it. It's not in the least bit intimidating which makes it the most approachable remote since Atari's or the NES'.

Runner up: Nintendo DS touchscreen.

Honorable mention: Gamecube controllers, Atari's joystick.

David Redkey

5) N.E.S.--I recall how well all the wonderful, wonderful games actually felt in my hand. Megaman 2 comes to mind firse and foremost. I miss it and I'm sorry that it was replaced by far inferior systems.

4) X-box 360 controller--Well made and fits comfortably. Its easy to use and the number games that show the joys of this controller are too numerous to name. The D-Pad sucks for 2D fighters, however...

3) Mouse/Keyboard--Every game I played on PC made this glow through and through. I wished it was more to the forefront but videogames took that edge (easy to use and much much cheaper).

2) Playstation 2 controller--Need I list the games that made this one a gem. It fit well in your hands and the amount of options was staggering. I stand befuddled by the library and how well it was used.

1) SNES Controller--By far the best controller ever created and by far the most entertaining. It was utilized by so many great games I can't even begin. It just plain rocked...

Steve McHugh, Flashback, Previews (Assault Heroes)

5. Keyboard/mouse - For those games you need precision on, ie strategy or FPS games the normal keyboard and mouse combo take some beating. It's only downside is when you need to use developers don't use easy controls with the keyboard.

4. N64 - The first analog stick means this controller gets the nod.

3. Sega Saturn - The 2nd best pad to use for 2D fighters ever made (and in some peoples eyes the best). It's an awesome technical achievement that's actually better made then anything the PS1 did at the time (shame the same couldn't be said about the console eh?).

2. Xbox 360 - It's comfortable and durable and has fantastic analog control, it even looks great too. And it's wireless which makes it even better (how did ever I cope before the wireless pad?)

1. Megadrive (6 button)- Released along with Street Fighter 2 this is just a fantastic controller that was much more comfotable then the SNES counterpart. The fact that people mod it so they can play 2D fighters on current systems just goes to show that.

Hon mention - DS stylus. When used right this is superb, too few developers use it right though.

Sean Garmer, Previews (Ar Tonelico), Monthly Roundtables

5. NES Controller- It was simple with two buttons, a D-Pad, and Start + Select. What more could you ask for?

4. Nintendo DS w/ Touchscreen- I love the DS controls with the simple button scheme that fits well over your fingers. Then the stylus with the touch screen controls make this the must have handheld and allows for innovative gameplay.

3. XBOX 360 Controller- I agree with Ramon this controller is not only well made, but looks cool. Microsoft was smart to take out the bulky oversized part of the original XBOX controller and gave us this for the XBOX 360. They took out the white and black button that were placed in a frustrating place, and made it more like a Dualshock adding the LB and RB buttons on the top, and you can't forget the menu access button that made navigation on your 360 a whole lot easier.

2. Playstation Dualshock and SNES Controller- There's not much that beats the Dualshock controller it's just comfortable all the way around and has a sleek style to it. They even put in MIB as a way to drive a car (If you could really do that, that'd be awesome.) The SNES is my favorite system ever, and sure it's not much more than a NES controller with four more buttons. It's what led to the design of the Dualshock and is used for the Wii Classic Controller now. That just tells you how well it was made.

1. Nintendo's Wii Remote- Talk about great innovation. This a whole new way to play video games and I love it. You swing your arms and the remote around in actual real motions. Sure they may give you a workout, but they end up working well for most games. And I'd rather feel like I'm doing something, than sitting on my butt all the time.

Vincent Chiucchi, Select and Start News, Gaming Trends

5. Mouse and Keyboard - Even though they sell gamepads and joysticks for the PC ad I'm way more of a console gamer then a PC gamer, I'd rather have the Mouse and Keyboard. It just feels more comfortable for some reason.

4. SNES's Controller - A very well made and easy to use controller.

3. PS2's Dualshock - This is almost like the SNES controller in a way, except with two shoulders on each side which is great for fighting games because the left shoulders are not comfortable for me in fighting games. Throw in the dual joysticks that are very smooth unlike the N64's jagged one and this was one great controller.

2. Wii's Remote - You know why it's up here: because it's original in design and has motion sensoring, not to mention the possible add-ons for other types of games that can be created. Unfortunately, there are times when the sensors don't work and battery life is REALLY short compared to my #1 choice, so sorry remote: you take #2.

1. Gamecube's Wavebird - The regular Gamecube controllers felt great, but this is truly the best controller of the 6th Gen because it was wireless and the battery life was great. I might seemed biased though since I never tried PS2/Xbox wireless controllers, but nevertheless the Wavebird is perfect.

We had quite a variety this much as different controllers got the #1 nod. Nintendo however always seems to get their controllers right as plenty of their controllers made the list, and the Mouse and Keyboard also gets some mentions.
