Working Title 06.28.07: Working Rant - X vs. Y: Capcom
Posted by Jordan Williams on 06.28.2007

Hey you cool cats. Welcome back to the #1 column to think Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia is one of the hardest games to come out this year, WORKING TITLE.

Now, I know the mood around the site right now is generally somber with the Benoit Tragedy, and at any given time some more news can drop which can cause the site to drop off the face of the Earth. So I'm going to keep this week's off week Working Rant fairly short and sweet so at least it's not much of a load.

With that said, let's go ahead and get into the rant.

X vs. Y

We've all played them. The infamous "Vs." series made by Capcom and SNK. TO me these were some of the more balanced 2D fighters out there, they had the people everyone played as mixed in with the people NO ONE played as and it just came off as a very good experience for all. Recently on the 411Mania forums, I was asked by a member/mod named Havok to post what would be a 'dream roster' in a Vs. game. The idea came along during a marathon Sprite Thread in which he noticed that I knew almost every character posted. So he just approached me and asked what my dream roster would be like.

So, hey. Never turn down a free idea when you don't have any of your own. Although a problem came along. The more I thought about this column, the more people I thought of. Eventually it all just spiraled out of control in a sense that there is just no way I'd be able to do this column as an off week idea. So now it's turned into a full blown series, X vs. Y.

Sort of.

The basic premise is that I have to come up with a dream roster for a Vs. game. I'm not going to limit myself to just Marvel or Capcom. Instead I'm going to just put in whomever I see fit. Each week will focus on a particular company/roster.

But seeing as this will really be nothing more than a glorified list with a few witty comments, this is going to be a series that I will only do on the Off Weeks(I.E weeks like this where I am between columns). That way Working Title doesn't get completely devoid of content for a month. Oh haha, save your jokes.

This week I figure I'd just start it off with the one I know best...Capcom. And when I say Capcom, I don't mean just Streetfighter, either.

X vs. Y: Capcom

It just gets pretty straightforward from here. Due to the overwhelming size of this game. I'm only going to put ten (10) from Capcom into this game. Here they are with some minor comments.

In no particular order

#1 Ryu (Marvel vs. Capcom style)
Street Fighter Series

Comments : Really, are you at all surprised with this? I mean when you think Streetfighter, you just know Ryu is going to be in it. Besides the fact that I personally hate Ryu and his clones (Ken, Akuma...yet not Dan. Also, don't email me explaining why they are NOT clones.) He IS Streetfighter, thus if there is any game with Capcom to be made he is going to be the one in it. Can't say the same for his clone-like brethren, though. Ken and Akuma will not be included in this game. Why? Because I really like Marvel vs. Capcom's style of Ryu. Where if you just put in a certain button combo you effectively got to use Ken or Akuma. It saves up slots for two more characters, and manages to keep everyone happy.

#2 Chun-Li
Street Fighter Series

Comments : The First Lady of Fighting just has to be in the game. Not only because of her Capcom roots, but because she is actually a very good character. Usually in fighting games the female characters are regulated to being speedy types. While this is true for Chun-Li, she can at least be played with a completely different style. Having different styles is ALWAYS good for a game that includes a ton of characters from other brands.

#3 Frank West
Dead Rising

Comments: Why the hell NOT? You've played Dead Rising. You've SEEN what this man can do. How many out of shape reporters do you know can execute a flash kick? How about pick up a shopping cart with one hand and throw it 30 feet? How about REACH INSIDE OF A LIVE ZOMBIE (Oxymoron) and rip out its intestines? Frank West can. This guy was the definition of utter badass when it came to Dead Rising. I'd love to see his raw meat, servbot helmet, zombie German suplexing ass in a real fighting game to see what he can really do.

#4 Guile
Street Fighter Series

Comments: My personal all time favorite character from the Street Fighter series. Why? Because for a decade that man has had only FOUR moves and STILL kicked ass. No insane button combos, no weird circle rotations. He was straightforward. He didn't need the flashy shit. Guile deserves to be in the game if not only for his simplicity, but his track record. Although it may not seem like it. Behind Ryu and Ken, many consider Guile to be a main character and integral part of the Street Fighting franchise. Basically. If we are going to put Ryu and Chun-Li in. We have to put in Guile. He's just as big of an icon as they are.

#4 Megaman X
Megaman Series

Comments: We've had Megaman, Roll, Zero(albeit Megaman Zero). It's about time we put X in a game. Personally, I'd love a chance to see a lesser known badass of the series like Bass/Forte in the game, but I know more people know of him rather than X. This really helps all around because with this being X, he himself looks more adult and fits in better with the rest of the characters style wise...sort of. Also, the fact that he and his counterparts are considered the official mascots of Capcom doesn't hurt either.

#5 Leon Kennedy
Resident Evil Series

Comments: I never really understood why Jill was in MvsC2. She didn't really strike me as much of a badass and I personally just didn't like the character overall. Leon, on the other hand, IS a badass. If Resident Evil 2 didn't prove that point, Resident Evil 4 drove that point home for DAMN sure. Despite him mostly fighting with just guns, you can see the man himself knows how to fight. It'll be interesting to see how he would translate to a traditional 2D fighter. It'd be even more interesting to see how he would deal with Frank West.

#6 Alex
Street Fighter Series

Comments:At the expense of pissing off the purists. Zangief is just old and tired. It's a rule that you have to have one big slow grappler character, and that role was usually always filled by Zangief. Well, it's about time he moved out of the way and let the new class handle such duties. I chose Alex because Hugo already got his time to shine in CvsSNK Chaos. So this time it will be Alex's turn to show people what he can do. That...and since SF3 doesn't have Guile, I had to use Alex a lot.

#7 Dante
Devil May Cry Series

Comments: I'm not exactly a big fan of the DMC series. But I can definitely see a reason to have him included. One reason is this is supposed to be CAPCOMS roster, not STREETFIGHTER. So you definitely want to have people from other Capcom games show up, and when looking at it like this Dante is DEFINATELY one you should look at. He could easily be adapted into a fighting game. Hell, I was honestly surprised he hasn't appeared in one as a secret character yet. There's not much I really need to explain here. Including Dante in this game is pretty much a no brainer.

#8 Sagat
Street Fighter Series

Comments: Although I'm trying to keep an overabundance of SF characters in the game. There are just some you can't deny. Sagat is one of them. Sure, if I wanted to include a villain I could easily put in someone like Demitri or M.Bison/Vega. But frankly. I don't like either of those characters. Where with Sagat, I actually like him and he has a good play style. Again, the few SF characters I do put in here aren't just throw away(sans Alex), but bonafide big name icons in the series. I feel if there was someone from the 'other side', it would definitely be Akuma or Sagat...and Akuma is already in the game(sort of).

#9 Morrigan
Darkstalkers Series

Comments: Man, let me tell you. When it came down to putting a second female in here. It was tough one. This was literally decided via a coin toss. It was between Morrigan, a longtime staple of Capcom in these sorts of games vs. BB Hood my personal favorite Darkstalkers character. Sadly Morrigan won. Morrigan is a solid fighter and like I said, she's really just a staple of the Vs. games. Hopefully if anyone one ever gets made, she will have an updated sprite. Please?

#10 Viewtiful Joe
Viewtiful Joe Series

Comments: Ah yes, the joke character. It's always in this type of game. There was Dan, The Martians from Metal Slug, Servbot, and the list just goes on. Now it's time to pass it on to good ole VJ. I know calling him a joke character would be a bit much, but just look at him? Can you not look at him and think he was a joke character? Regardless he would be on my roster simply because he would make a GREAT joke character on top of being a character that could actually fight. Also, the fact that I REALLY want him to be in SSBB has nothing to do with it.

That's all
Well, there you have it. It may be a bit unorthodox or small, but there's a definite reason as to why. Because it's MY personal dream team. Next time there is an off week you will be treated to my SNK Dream Team. Despite my earlier feelings I actually had a lot of fun writing this. It brought back a lot of good memories. Don't expect a column next week. Why? BECAUSE IT'S MY BIRTHDAY. I'll officially be 21 on July 3rd, so the rest of the week will be a legal drunken blur. If I can find myself the week after, expect a column.

I think I'm going to go play some Megaman.

Until next time, I'm Jordan Williams...and Megaman X Command Mission was a good game!
