Working Title 07.12.07: X vs. Y: Marvel
Posted by Jordan Williams on 07.12.2007
Last week we looked at the Capcom Dream Team, this week we take a look at the Marvel Dream Team. Might as well read it now because next week is going to be be filled to the brim with E3 Fallout.
Hello there! Welcome to the #1 Column to TURN 21 LAST WEEK! WORKING TITLE!
That's right folks; I decided not to write last week because on top of it being July 4th, it was also my 21st Birthday on the 3rd. No way was I going to try to write a column like that.
Although today, column is the operative word. I know that last week I said that this week we'd be kicking off a new series...but that's not going to happen.
Mostly because I forgot E3 was this week. I thought it was LAST week. So, I want to get my new series started (which deals with E3...like the whole site will) NEXT week. This week, you all get a Working Rant.
Oh stop groaning, they aren't that bad.
Seriously, though. I actually liked my Rant I did about my fighting game dream team, and so did a lot of the other fighting game fans out there. So I figure I'll go ahead and continue that one for this week. And next week you get a big dose of E3 Fallout, which will probably be taking over the site.
X vs. Y
So, a week ago you saw what ten people I would pick for the Capcom side of things. The logical next step would be to pick from SNK. Well, I'm not going to do that THIS week. Simply put...SNK has a metric shitload of characters and it's REALLY hard trying to narrow it down to ten I REALLY like. So instead, I'll pick a company that is easier for me to narrow down.
This week, we will see my Marvel Dream Team.
X vs. Y: Marvel
Yep, although they aren't exactly a big name in the fighting genre. They might as well be. Seeing as they are responsible for the other half of the Vs. series success. It only seems fitting to think that the ULTIMATE Vs. Game will have a few Capcom characters in the mix. So let's go ahead and get right into it.
In no particular order
Also, yes. I know Civil War and World War Hulk are events and not full out books. Big thanks to Steven Masters for correcting me on some of my dumb mistakes
#1 Iron Man Iron Man, Mighty Avengers, Civil War Comments : Well, if you are going to make a Marvel Dream Team, the logical answer is to look at The Avengers first and foremost. But this isn't really the case here. I just REALLY like Iron Man, fighting game-wise he offers up a good mix of defense and offense. Seeing as War Machine was one of the better characters in MvsC 1(In my opinion). I'd be glad to have Iron Man back in this one.
#2 Spider-Man Spider-Man, Civil War Comments: Really. This is pretty much a no brainer. If there is a more recognizable Marvel hero than Spider-Man, I really need to catch up on my comic book reading. The man is all over everything, and is also one of the fastest characters in the fighting games he was in. He'd fit in here just because every roster needs that really fast annoying character that no one really likes to play as...just button mash with. Plus, imagine the team up moves you can pull off with Spider-Man and Dante? Sheer asskickery.
#3 Mr. Fantastic Fantastic Four, Civil War Comments: Surprised? Well you should be. I Dahlsim was one of the people who BARELY missed the cut for my Capcom Dream Team, so I decided I'd put in someone who could fill in for him quite nicely as well as fill in an empty slot on another team. I'm trying to stay away from picking just the standard fare for Marvel's Dream Team. Every game has a Wolverine, Cyclops, Spider-Man, etc. But not many games have some of the other big name(or lesser known) heroes of the Marvel Universe. Mr. Fantastic fit the bill perfectly.
#4 Venom III Thunderbolt Comments: Yes, there is a reason I made sure to pick which Venom. The old Venom is just that...the old Venom. Might as well update it now, right? Sure, for the most part it's still the same old Venom we all know and love, but this time he is evil without a doubt. None of that anti-hero bullshit we've become accustomed, too. Plus, the Dream Team NEEDS some evil, and I'm actually trying to avoid the likes of Magneto.
#5 Wolverine X-men, and a lot of others Comments: If I had to choose an X-men member to be in the Dream Team, it'd be Wolverine. He is one of the more recognizable as well as one of the better characters from the team. Cyclops is way too vanilla and really no one else is relevant. He fits in here just fine. He fit in all of the other games just fine, too. Well...maybe not the Wolverine games...those were just horrible.
#6 Deadpool Deadpool, Cable & Deadpool, Civil War Comments: I don't care if no one thinks this man is a top tier Marvel character. You are wrong. DEAD WRONG. Deadpool is one of, if not my FAVORITE Marvel character of all time, this was even before all of the ramped Deadpool love he is getting now. I'd LOVE to see him in a fighting game. He'd be a GREAT replacement for Gambit or pretty much anyone else. He has real fighting ability, a real smart mouth, and most of all he is A COMPLETE AND UTTER BADASS. Don't agree with me? Too bad. Deadpool is awesome. Period.
#7 Elektra Daredevil, Elektra Comments: On Marvel's side of things, there have always been a big lack of females. I figure if we are going to put a female in, it might as well be one that can fight, right? I don't really like the character over all, but if were choosing a fighting game I'd rather have a girl that can fight rather than a girl that everyone likes...which brings me to...
#8 Emma Frost I seriously don't even know Comments: Okay, maybe not EVERYONE loves her...but she's a slut. People like sluts, right? Either way, in the attempt to inject more female into this Dream Team, I decided to put the X-men's current leading lady, The White Queen in the line up. She's been taking Jean's sloppy seconds so she can take the spot that I was going to give to Rogue...until I realized that Rogue sucked.
#9 Hulk The Incredible Hulk, World War Hulk Comments: The Dream Team needs the big hulking massive one. And as much as I like The Blob, to keep with the continuity of House of M, I just can't use him the way I want to. So it was out of The Hulk or Juggernaut...I choose Hulk. He's a bit more recognizable and Juggernaut as lost a lot of the fun he used to have due to his character being just plain crappy. Hulk can dish out the damage and the slams, so he's a perfect fit as the big slow one.
#10 Squirrel Girl I've lost count Comments: Dr. Doom, Giganto, Mandarin, M.O.D.O.K, Thanos, Terrax, Bi-Beast, DEADPOOL. What do all of those people have in common? Squirrel Girl beat them all. Nuff said. From now on the #10 spot is reserved for the joke character. Get used to it.
That's it
Well, that's it for this weeks filler/Working Rant. During the process of writing this I was actually watching the Nintendo and Sony E3 Feeds. Not to give anything away but I was really impressed with one while really disappointed with the other. More on that next week on Welcome to Next Gen: E3 Fallout starts.
Until next week, I'm Jordan Williams...AND TRANSFORMERS WAS FUCKING AWESOME.
