Working Title 08.09.07: X vs. Y: Team Boss
Posted by Jordan Williams on 08.09.2007
Capcom, Marvel, SNK, and DC. They've all got a Dream Team but they all lacked one thing. Final Bosses. That is where Team Boss comes in. In the final issue of X vs. Y we see a team completely made up of Boss/Final Boss characters. Who made the cut?
Welcome to the #1 Column to still watch Power Rangers and not be ashamed of it, WORKING TITLE. No, I will not explain or put a witty comment on that last line.
Before I get started, I know a lot of you check out the Wrestling Zone here at 411. Yours truly made an appearance over this past Monday for Issue #101 of Hidden Highlights alongside my arch nemesis JP. I suggest you go over there and check it out.
If I seem a little 'off' this week, it's mostly because outside life and recurring sickness are pretty much kicking my ass this week and the column was very low on the bottom of my priorities. But I do have a responsibility to do and I AM feeling good enough to do the column so I can't really justify making it late.
This week is the final week of the current series X vs. Y. What started out as a simple rant ended up turning into a one month long funfest of people picking dream teams for their favorite Vs. Game. I can say this has been one of the most surprisingly fun series I have done in since Underrated/Overrated.
So, we have our four main teams set. Marvel, SNK, Capcom, and DC. Each one with a pretty diverse set of characters. But they are (mostly) all lacking one thing. Evil.
Sure, the SNK list has a final boss character on it, but the rests of the lists really lack a strong evil presence. Well, that's why I am setting out to the fix that today with Team Boss. This team will be made up of the 'evil bosses' or general evil people from the respective Dream Teams. It's more of a vanity list than anything, but hey. If you are going to have a game like this you are going to need final bosses, are you not?
With that, let's get this show on the road because the Nyquil is starting to kick my ass.
X vs. Y: Team Boss (DC, Marvel, SNK, and Capcom)
Any of you math heads out there will know that four doesn't exactly fit evenly into 10. So one team is bound to have more evil than other...but hey, it's for the common good. I'm not trying to split it up evenly, just picking a team. Let's do this.
Not in any particular order
#1 Mister Sinister Marvel Comments : Why hasn't he EVER been in one of these games? I know he isn't one of the bigger villains, but he is pretty recognizable to the non-comic book reading fandom. He even looks like he could put up a decent fight. Coupled with the fact that he is completely friggin' evil. He stands a pretty good chance of being one of those cheap villains in the vein of...
#2 Rugal SNK Comments : Are you really surprised? You'd better not be. If there was a competition to find who the cheapest of the cheap were, without a doubt in my opinion it would be Rugal. I mean, there is cheap, and then there's THIS IS SERIOUSLY NOT FAIR cheap. Rugal is of the former. Never in my life have I threatened a fictional character with as much bodily harm before as I have done to Rugal in the King of Fighter series. Rugal, you are truly a man of evil. You cheap bastard.
#3 B.B Hood Capcom Comments : While not exactly an evil character per say (she's quite eviler...), I still think that B.B Hood will fit in PERFECTLY with the evil team. Besides her being one of my favorite characters from the Dark Stalker series, just imagine a cute little girl who will suddenly whip out an Uzi and off you just screams Evil to me. One would assume it does the same to everyone else in the world. If it doesn't...then you need some serious help.
#4 Mr. Freeze DC Comments : I am really going to struggle with the DC Villains. Mostly because a lot of them I used for the original DC Dream Team, and the others...well, the other frankly don't fight much...or at all. So I resorted to using one of my favorite villains next to Bane. Mr. Freeze might not be in fighting shape (Although his The Batman version is), he could still make a formidable foe simply because until the other villains in DC's universe ESPECIALLY Batman's, he tends to like to take the offense himself rather then send henchmen. That's a good thing in my book.
#5 Angel SNK Comments : Mmm. Angel (said as Ann-Hell). People always call Mai the true fan service character of the SNK universe. They are wrong, wrong, wrong. Angel is the biggest pieces of fan service this side of Shermie. Here's the kicker, while she isn't exactly evil she DOES get a spot on this team because she is all KINDS of nasty when the computer plays with her and has it out for you. Ask anyone who frequents SNK games, they will know that PLAYING with Angel alone is a feat in itself, but we all know the computer cheats. So it will be able to pull off her "Unchained Heart" moves with no delay at all and really just make it a pain in the ass. This is why she is on this team.
#6 Typhoid Mary Marvel Comments : You have no idea how hard I had to search to find the picture with her nipple not showing. Anyway. Has anyone noticed how female heavy this list is? Either I am subconsciously making up for the lack of females in the other Dream Teams or Marvel, DC, Capcom, and SNK really like making evil females. Whatever the case, if the same vein as Elektra, Mary would fit in good in a fighting game. She can fight, she has powers, and she's fucking crazy. There's really no reason why she hasn't been in a game before this one. Also, for those of you expecting to see Magneto or Juggernaut to pop up in here any time soon. Sorry to disappoint you. None of them are showing up on this list. Consider them carry overs. I'm going with Phil's method for this and trying to include characters that haven't been in a VS. Game before.
#7 Hyo Imawano Capcom Comments : I really feel bad looking at my Capcom list now. Since that was the first Dream Team I made I was still in the mindset of putting together a good team...rather than I my favorites. In the heat of things I ended up leaving out characters from one of my favorite 3D Fighters of all time, Rival Schools. If I could go back I'd really take out Megaman X and put in Shoma. But, I guess I'll rectify that now by putting in Hyo from Rival Schools. He is one evil dude...mostly because he works at a Japanese high school, and I am under the (hopefully wrong) impression that damn near everyone who works in the Japanese School System is an evil person who just wants to brainwash children. This is what Capcom has done to me. Thank you.
#8 Kain R. Heinlein SNK What is with SNK Final Bosses not having any good pictures?
Comments : For anyone out there who has had the raw pleasure of playing a Garou: Mark of the Wolves. You should know the name of this man. He was the guy at the end of the game that made you realize that Grant was NOT the final boss...and then he proceeded to kick your ass all over the screen. Kain is a bit of an anomaly in the SNK universe in that he really isn't that well known of a final boss and on top of that he isn't THAT cheap. He's just really good. But to make sure I am pulling people from SNK that haven't been in a game, and aren't all from the King of Fighters series. I am putting Kain on this list.
#9 Red Skull Marvel Comments : So, this was one of the harder decisions. Other villains up for this were Rhino, Carnage, The Blob, and Phoenix. But I decided that this list lacked some Silver Age. So I decided to put in a villain that I always thought was a bit of a badass in his own right, if not necessarily someone who did a lot of his own fighting. If you were to ask me how Red Skull would fight in this game...I'd have to get back to you. Where as the people he beat out all have a definitive fighting style, Red Skulls would be a bit more...mysterious? Yeah. That word fits. But we all know the next villain wouldn't be mysterious at all...
#10 Superman DC Comments : I really love the #10 Spot. I mean, I really really do. I got SO MUCH SHIT last week for putting in Batman instead of Superman. A lot of people said that my reasoning was pretty lame...and it was. It was so I could just do this. In my mind, Superman as a character and a person seems so much better a villain. And in a video game aspect, your character is NEVER the person who's indestructible, invincible, and has a ton of powers. That's what the final boss is. So I see NO problem with putting Superman on the Boss Dream Team. You can just tell how much of a pain in the ass it would be to go against him.
Well that's it. I might do one of these again someday with the other fighting game franchises I left out. But right now I'm going to go ahead and call it quits before I end up getting too far ahead of myself. I hope you all enjoyed it because it was really fun and I got a lot of good feedback from it.
Next time...
Next week means it's an Off Week...and just as I typed that I realized that about two weeks ago I hit my 1 year Anniversary with 411mania.com and Working Title. You'd think I'd do something special for that, huh? Well, we'll see next week. Right now all I am interested in doing is going to sleep and hoping I wake up NOT sick.
Until next time, I'm Jordan Williams...and for a year now...THIS COLUMN STILL DOSEN'T HAVE A NAME.
