The Game Plan 12.07.07: Gears Killed the Video Game Star
Posted by James McGee on 12.07.2007

I hate Jurassic Park. Oh, don't get me wrong, I think it's a great flick. I saw it multiple-times at the theater. I own it. I think its Spielberg doing what he does best. But after that first shot of the computer-generated Brachiosaurus grazing in the tree-tops, movies were never the same. CGI became the standard, and movie-goers have had to suffer through one over-wrought digital disaster after another ever since. Forget whether or not CGI is appropriate for a film, just make bloody sure there's something there that wasn't created on set. For every director that understands where and how to use computer graphics—your Spielbergs and Peter Jacksons—there's a hack that thinks the way to make a movie good is to fill it with a bunch of photo-shop monstrosities. And it all goes back to those beautiful, breathtaking, flippin' dinosaurs. Lord I hate that movie.

But movies aren't the only victim of this technological plague. Video games have suffered too. I know how silly that must sound—games suffering from advances in technology. Sure, better technology leads to better games, but that's only if the designers understand how to use it. The current generation of systems has the most advanced, mind-boggling capabilities yet, which only makes the problem worse. You know the old saying: power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. But if Jurassic Park planted the seed of corruption in movies, who's responsible for the gaming equivalent? That's easy: reigning graphic-whore champion, Gears of War. Like Jurassic Park, it came along innocently enough, just trying to be a bit of popcorn entertainment. But its success runs the risk of tainting all that is good about gaming. I'm James McGee, and here's The Game Plan.

Ooooh, pretty…

Before I'm labeled a Gears-hater, let me remind everyone that I praised it waaaaay back in my very first column. I used it to illustrate my Purpose Driven Philosophy—that is, that you have to judge things by what they're trying to be instead of what you think they should be. I defended Gears against all the people who criticize it for being derivative and having a lousy story, reasoning that all it was ever meant to be was a blockbuster testosterone-trip of a shooter. It would have received all the accolades and demonstrated such staying power if there wasn't a solid game at the center of it all. But let's be honest: when the first footage showed up, none of us said "Wow, look at that solid gameplay!" We all drooled over the graphics. "Holy crap," we said. "Is that really what the next generation has in store? Sign me up!" Don't lie—you're just as guilty as me.

No matter how good the gameplay, I seriously doubt Gears of War would have received half of the attention it has if it wasn't (arguably) the most visually impressive game released to date. There are far better games out there…just not many that look better. My biggest fear is that, like so often happens in Hollywood, other creators will see what made Gears so popular—or at least what they think made it so popular (i.e. the amazing graphics)—and shift their focus to a game's visual design first and foremost, neglecting all the meat of the gaming experience—things like gameplay, story, etc. It isn't like style over substance isn't already a problem in all forms of art, but by setting the bar so incredibly high, Gears runs the risk of aggravating the problem to epidemic levels.

Beautiful, but shallow…How typical.

A recent example that comes to mind is Heavenly Sword. Don't let the high scores fool you. Dig deeper into actual reviews, and you keep running up against the same things: derivative overall, sometimes frustrating gameplay, criminally short, but the graphics are to die for. 411's own Nathan Grayson summed it up beautifully in his review: "Heavenly Sword was supposed to help save the PS3 this fall, but instead it just feels like wasted potential." (Read the full review for his detailed breakdown of the wonderous graphics and disappointing final product.) How sad is it that Sony squandered the PS3's much-lauded power by valuing the shock-and-awe of pretty pictures over the basic building blocks of a great game? The advances made by Heavenly Sword could prove to be amazing tools in the hands of the right designers. But that's all graphics are: one tool among the many used to build a great game. Buying a fifty-dollar Craftsman torque wrench from Sears doesn't make me a great mechanic, and being able to slap some shiny graphics on a game doesn't make for a great developer.

That was for the "Halo 2.5" comment.

I'm laying all this at the feet of Gears of War, but while it may have inspired the problem, it obviously isn't causing the problem. It's all the people who look at it and get all the wrong ideas about what a game should be, from company execs, to designers, to gamers themselves. Remember when the multiplayer beta for Halo 3 hit? How many times did we hear "Halo 2.5" because the graphics weren't up to par with Gears in some eyes? For every rational voice that offered suggestions to tweak the gameplay, or wondered aloud if the single-player campaign would offer a satisfying conclusion to the story, there were fifteen morons shouting "Halo is fugly, Gears FTW!" If Bungie had trotted out some pixilated mess that looked like they'd cooked it up in the early ‘90s, yeah, there's a problem with the graphics. But they gave us a product that delivered where it counts, and looked amazing despite not being the photo-realistic masterpiece that Gears represents. I'm not saying games shouldn't keep up with the current graphical standards. I'm saying graphics shouldn't be the first and last word, as far too many people seem to think they are.

Unreal Looks better than gears and Epic thinks so as well and guess what? Its on the PS3 and If you didnt know epic made gears as well so there just a great developer with great tools that they make in house. Others will catch on and already have look at GT5.

Gears is an amazing game and it has nothing to do with teh graphics. It's the most instense, claustrophobic exciting shooter that has ever come out. It perfectly blends duck and cover mechanics with intense cinematic gun battles. The only weakness is the online "host advantage" caused by a lack of dedicate game servers and the control glitches that stem from that as well.

Halo 3 isn't called Halo 2.5 for the graphics. It's called Halo 2.5 because other then detachable turrets, a quad and a laser cannon it's the same game with new maps. Nothing at all to do with graphics.

If anything, lets leave gears alone because it's one of the first of it's kind. IMHO (which isn't very humble at all), Gears is the one game that's come out of late (though I haven't played COD4) that deserved and lives up to the hype.

Take assassin's creed. Now if you want to talk about Graphics over gameplay, take a spin on that piece of repetitive rubbish.

Anyhow. My thoughts.

You need to actually play real games before you blame gears for a problem that existed ages before that game did. As for the length of Heavenly Sword everyone bitching about it needs to remember that it is effectively the same length as Halo 3, Gears, and Bioshock. Like the other guy said it is called Halo 2.5 because they did not change anything at all and they want people to believe that it is the second coming, dream time, and Ragnarok all rolled into one.

As for Gears being the first of its kind please go play a real tactical shooter like Rainbow Six or Graw. Gears takes what those games did right and totally destroys it with an unessecarily messed up control scheme, crummy map design, and needless removal of the reticle in a THIRD PERSON game. If it was an fps at least you could properly follow the gun model and would not nessecarily need the reticle but how can you do that if you are actually looking at your character from behind? It just shows that the game is very weak if they feel the need to pidgeonhole people into using cover etc by removing a visual cue. Funny thing is taking cover and looking down sight is something that has ALWAYS BEEN DONE in fps' so there is no real need to force it like they did in Gears.

How Stupid is this guy?!
Gears of War was and is still is one of my favorite games of all time. That is why it won so many Games of the Year award.
"So many stupid people in this world, and no one to eat them!" lol

Spencer, you are a twat. The author's article is completely unbiased and bringing up "console wars" is off-base. And besides, the fact that Gears remains arguably the best looking console game says alot, considering that it is over 1 year old now. Have fun justifying your $500 purchase.

I never came across a 3d title with real pretty graphics. Stuff like gow
is neat at best. Maybe in a few years. But to me 3d is still in the early stages. Sad to see that 2d is dead by now. There was lots of potential never used and the 3d gimick has completely taken over. And i agree, gameplay is about to die too.

can you beleive that everybody compare now-games to a year-plus old game? this game was the reason that everybody got confused about the ps3

Json025, quit being an idiot. You obviously missed this part: "No matter how good the gameplay, I seriously doubt Gears of War would have received half of the attention it has if it wasn't (arguably) the most visually impressive game released to date." I didn't like Gears of War for exactly the same reasons as him. The funny thing is, HE's praising it. He says it's a good game. I think it's overhyped, and I totally agree with this article, it's just graphics and chainsaw, but regardless, this article isn't bashing Gears, it's blaming it for making other developers believe that graphics are everything. Learn to read.

All I can think of are the wonderful XBLA games that place gameplay high above graphical presentation. Why not champion them?

I also disagree that Gears is all style and no substance. Not sure we even played the same game, in fact.

I find it odd that no-one has yet to bring up the Wii in this debate. The Wii is the graphically inferior console, no question about that, yet by focusing on gameplay, it has managed to seel the exact same number of 360's worldwide in half the time (16.5 million in one year compared to two).

Could it be because the Wii is home to some of great games that rate high on gameplay? Mario Galaxy, Metroid, Zack and Wiki, Zelda - none are as pretty as Assassin's Creed or Heavenly Sword, but they don't pretend to be. They are great games built for playing, not for ogling. If I want to watch 6 hours of pretty cut scenes I'll watch Lord Of The Rings.

My own personal view of GoW (even though I think this issue is bigger than one game, it is in fact the attiutude of game developers) is that it is an amazing looking game, and while the gameplay is great for a 3rd person shooter, it is far too repetative, which is once again a problem with the gameplay.

I think this is a foolish article. Why in the world should I choose between the two? Why can I not have both great gameplay and great graphics? Singlehandedly GOW proved that I can have it. I don't have to be hoodwinked into buying a Wii for last generation technology, and pay new generation money. Even if it is cheaper than the competition doesn't make it better. The sad reality of the Wii is that Nintendo as good as they are rely on the fact that people will love and play redundant character led titles such as Zelda, Metroid, and Mario for generations and not want to move forward. If were up to Nintendo I would never have Xbox live for my console, I wouldn't be playing Ninja Gaiden in it's new form, or for that matter Halo. Which have been around for how long? How many new franchises have Nintendo brought to the world that have the same impact as their innaugural franchise. Not many. I will not even speak on the obsurdity that GOW is repetitive. Metroids past three games are the poster child for that that. I paid good money for my 360, and I want it to dominate in my gameplay experience. I want to sit in front of my HD television and be blown away by everything that entails with new technology and great gameplay. I'm not interested in controlling a Wii character for tennis when I can play Top Spin. Spare me...I enjoyed every minute of GOW and didn't have expectations beyond have something good to play. I want to see developers digg in and bring thier best to bare. I want to not only play it, I want to see it evolve in front of my eyes. If you want innovative game play, then buy Viewtiful Joe, and quit playing your Wii. Because outside of Wii sports innovation with so called focus on gameplay doesn't exist. Instead like every Nintendo generation, wait for them to justify your purchase. You can await Mario Universe...I'll be playing and enjoying the next level. More Mass Effect Please...

Here is this article summed up for ya.

Gears good graphics and gameplay. Heavenly Sword good graphics not so good gameplay. Me blame pretty graphic game for publishers selling games on graphics. Big pictures take up space to make article bigger.
Ideas for good article needed bad. Please help.
