The SIXAXIS Report 02.05.08
Posted by Mark Salmela on 02.05.2008

Well hello again, my Sony friends. After taking a nice week off to get some things straightened out, I've returned to deliver all of the latest Sony news. Thanks again to Dan Owen for filling in for me; I was pretty sure we weren't going to have a SIXAXIS Report at all last week. Speaking of which, that would have made 3 out of the 5 weekly news reports absent, a pretty low standard. Hopefully everyone will be back this week; I've got a lot to say about Sony and Microsoft, so let's get to it.

A rumor in and of itself, it's Sony News of the Week

Sony to discontinue the 80 GB PS3 model?

Well rumors have been running rampant these past couple of weeks, and I'm here to give my opinion and see just how true these rumors are. The first rumor started when Best Buy sent internal letters to their departments that they will be dropping the 80 GB model from stores. Since then there have been rumors both for and against Gamestop also dropping the 80 GB model from their stores. Sony has gone on record saying they will not comment on the status of the 80 GB model but "leaked" insider information has said Sony will no longer produce 80 GB PS3's. The alleged reason is because the 80 GB PS3 has failed to meet sales expectations *much like why they discontinued the 20 GB last year*, and that focus will switch to the 40 GB model. The second alleged "reason" will be explained in the article right below this one, so hold on for a second while I looks into the first reason a little bit more.

First off let me say I have a hard time believing the 40 GB is outselling the 80 GB model. From what I've witnessed at my local stores is that the 80 GB is far outselling the 40 GB, and gamedaily.biz also reports that the 80 GB is the better selling of the two models. If this is all false however and it turns out that the 40 GB is outselling the 80 GB, then Sony is in the right for taking out the 80 GB. While not having PS2 backwards compatibility hurts, from what I hear Sony loses more money for selling an 80 GB model than a 40 GB model. It's just simple business to drop the model that makes them less profit.

But there's one more alleged "reason" as to why Sony is dropping the 80 GB model *if they in fact are, which is still unconfirmed*, so let's tackle the second rumor…

Sony to announce a new PS3 model in the near future?

The official SIXAIXS mole, who was right back in my first column with the 40 GB PS3, makes his second prediction.

Be aware everything from the first news article above and this one is almost entirely speculation. With that said, heavy rumors have been building up recently saying Sony is planning to release a new 120 – 160 GB model PS3 with DualShock 3 bundled in. Sony has recently gone on record saying the cost of components in the PS3 is dropping every day, so a new PS3 with a bigger hard drive isn't too far fetched. Once again, according to "insider moles" *meaning it's no guarantee*, Sony is planning to release the 120 – 160 GB PS3 model with no PS2 backwards compatibility *meaning no SKU's will have b/c*.

The new bundle won't be packed in with any game, and Spiderman 3 will no longer be bundled with the 40 GB model according to the rumors. DualShock 3 will eventually come with both models, but at launch will only be with the 120 – 160 GB model and take the price of the current 80 GB model *$500*. Around the same time Sony will also allegedly release its first "greatest hits" titles, Motorstorm, Resistance, and WarHawk. Sony also allegedly wants a 120 GB model to accommodate for the rapid increase in digital distribution.

If this rumor turns out to be true, I for one will actually be pretty happy. Despite me just saying I was frustrated at the lack of PS2 backwards compatibility, Sony needs to bundle in a larger hard drive to compete with the "360 Ultimate" which comes with a 120 GB hard drive. I'm still surprised at the lack of consumers knowing they can put in any SATA 2.0 external hard drive, so unless they raise consumer knowledge on that putting in a bigger hard drive will help make the PS3 seem more dominate over the competition.

One final rumor: PS3 learns a thing or two from WiiFit?

Once again this is a rumor, but the final rumor I'm going to talk about has to do with Sony releasing a slim-model of its PS3 system. We all know the PS2 and PSP received slim models, and a PS3 Slim was eventually bound to happen. But I think people were expecting a PS3 Slim sometime in 2009 or later, not in the second year of the life span. But according to recent rumors, Sony is already planning out a slim model, to be released late 2008. The PS3 Slim would feature a cooler Cell and graphics chip, so over-heating wouldn't be a problem. Also with Sony announcing that the cost of parts for the PS3 going down every day it seems a Slim PS3 may be coming sooner rather than later. I personally have no idea as to whether or not a slim PS3 is coming, but here are a couple more alleged prototypes of what the PS3 Slim would look like.

Sony PlayStation Store update for the week of January 31

My guess is that it looks better than it plays.

Well there wasn't a very big update for the PlayStation Store this week, but I'm actually not very upset. Last week Pixel Junk Monsters was released on the PlayStation Store, and let me say it's quickly becoming one of my favorite games on the PlayStation Network. It's basically based off of flash games like Y3K defender where you set up defenses to stop oncoming enemies, but let me tell you this game is worth a purchase at $8. I've had a bundle of fun playing each of the levels, and dancing to upgrade your weapons is awesome. I definitely recommend everyone pick up Pixel Junk Monsters for the PSN.

As for this week's updates, there were demos for games like Conflict: Denied Ops and the typical Rock Band update, but I didn't try either of them. Folklore also saw more downloadable content, but I never saw anything cool or fun about Folklore. After that was more videos and PS3 themes, which still makes me laugh how they're totally free for the PS3 yet actually cost money on XBL. Right now I'm sporting a cool Pixel Junk Monsters theme with a Killzone 2 background image, it's sweet.

Forever faster than that sellout hedgehog in Brawl, it's Sony Quick News!

For those who aren't aware, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will be coming out in the US on April 17. The game will be released via the PlayStation Store and Blu-Ray disc *like WarHawk was* for $40. Both Blu-Ray and download will cost $40, but the Blu-Ray version will have some extra behind the scenes video content. GT5 Prologue will feature 16 player online, numerous race tracks and over 40 cars. As for the full Gran Turismo 5, it probably won't be released until late 2008.

In an interesting piece of information, NCSoft, makers of MMO's like Guild Wars, made a pretty bold statement this week. NCSoft claims that while it'll be a slow transition, MMORPG's will slowly make their way to consoles in the near future, which is pretty much PC's last major market. Citing examples such as FFXI, MMO's should slowly be making their way to consoles in the next few years. World of Warcraft on consoles? It looks more and more likely every day.

Unreal Tournament 3 now has over 56 downloadable multiplayer maps for the PS3. Basically, the modding scene has exploded on UT3. I haven't played anywhere near all of them, but let me tell you there are a lot of awesome ones. I think overall my favorites are the bedroom style maps where you fight on desktops and bookshelves.

For those still wondering, Naughty Dog went on record recently saying they won't be releasing any downloadable content for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Uncharted was one of my favorite PS3 games last year, but I can understand Naughty Dog's already hard at work on their next PS3 game, whether it be Uncharted 2 or a new Jak and Daxter for the PS3.

The makers of the Fight Night series have announced their newest title, Facebreaker for the PS3/360/Wii. The game promises to take advantage of EA's new "facial deformation technology" which basically means you can really mess people up in the game. But *yes there's always a but*, the god dammed game is a cartoon. The game looks like they took the characters of Team Fortress 2 and made a boxing game out of it. Why they couldn't make Fight Night Round 4 is a complete mystery to me, and I can basically guarantee right now I won't be picking up Facebreaker for any system.

Despite recent rumors that Final Fantasy 13 would be released world wide in 2008, it appears that FF13 is planned for release in Japan only for 2008, with the US version coming early 2009 due to all the translation involved. No word on Final Fantasy Versus 13's release date.

National Geographic is the latest studio to announce Blu-Ray exclusivity, further killing HD-DVD. Although really, HD-DVD is on its death bed and it's only a matter of time before Universal and Paramount, the only major studios still with HD-DVD, make the switch to Blu-Ray.

In some awesome news, Valve is planning more downloadable content for Team Fortress 2 and Portal. Portal was easily one of the best experiences in a video game for 2007, and I can't wait for more Portal action.

Video B3yond!

Here's some Pixel Junk Monsters footage for all of you who have yet to pick up this awesome PSN gem.

A trailer for Go! Sports Skydiving, which if Go! Sports Ski is any indication; this will be the most awesomely bad game ever!

Here's a final showing of Devil May Cry for PS3/360, which comes out today. The PS3 version sports exclusive features like faster load times via installing onto the hard drive *360 can't do that* and smoother gameplay, I'm just saying.

The One Man Water Cooler~!

Well before I took a week off I wrote an article expressing my frustrations for Xbox Live. Needless to say a lot of Microsoft fans did not find my article to their liking and wrote in or left comments expressing their dislike for me because they have more achievement points than me. Well I must admit my problems with connecting to Xbox Live have been for the most part fixed *finally*, although now I'm having hardware troubles so I'm going to exchange it for a new one at my local Best Buy as soon as they get a new shipment in. Which reminds me, what's with the recent problems with Microsoft stocking the premiums? I haven't been able to find premiums at most stores since Christmas ended, but that's besides the point. In a positive update I resubscribed to Xbox Live, Rainbow Six Vegas was calling *more like peer pressure caved in to me*. That said though, I want to come back with a Sony song in my heart, so I'm going to describe why the 360 doesn't have the legs that Sony does in the current console wars.

Sony went into the console wars with a ten year plan, they've had everything all planned out since the beginning *well not everything obviously*. Sony's put in all of the seeds for making the PS3 last an entire decade, something Microsoft and Nintendo did not. I've said it before and I'll say it again, The current console wars are a marathon, not a sprint. The PS3 is the only one built for a marathon, at this rate Microsoft is going to run out of gas.

The biggest factor is and has always been Blu-Ray. I don't think anyone on the internet needs a refresher about what DVD did for the PS2. Well let me tell you, with the Warner Bros going exclusive Blu-Ray has won the war. Say what you want, but HD-DVD is dead and buried. The reason Blu-Ray and HD movies haven't taken off yet is because of the confused consumer base. Movies aren't like video games; competition doesn't come in the form of multiple platforms. Never has, never will. With Blu-Ray finally winning the HD wars within the next 2 years Blu-Ray will become a much bigger standard in the movie business. Downloadable movies are still a good 8 to 10 years off before becoming a true standard, and until then Blu-Ray will reign supreme. At Blu-Ray's side will be the PS3, off and on the cheapest Blu-Ray player out there. For Blu-Ray's inclusion alone PS3 sales will go up as more people buy HDTV's and decide to get a spiffy HD player to go with it. Even a couple of years from now when stand alone Blu-Ray players become cheaper than the PS3, it'll be an easy question of do you want a stand alone player, or for $100 more a video game console that plays CD's, DVD's, Memory sticks, Flash Drives, PS1 games, PS2 games *depending on which model PS3 you get*, and brand new HD PS3 games. That's not even mentioning if you like to tinker it can become a full computer running Linux.

Microsoft right now is bragging about their movie download service, but let me tell you, it's a horrible service. Don't make the mistake I hear everyone making, you're not buying anything. The marketplace does not put up movies for sale, you're RENTING DRM movies. No DVD extras, no packaging, nothing. You rent a movie and it can only be used when you're connected to your 360 and signed on XBL. Can't connect to the internet? Microsoft doesn't give a shit. Even people such as myself occasionally lose internet connection temporarily, and if I've changed Xbox's since I bought an arcade game or something, I can piss off. I can't play them at all *well the demo on XBLA, but that's meaningless when I've already paid for the full game*. I hope you like that number next to your name *gamerscore*, as that's about all you can do. What if you for whatever reason need to sell your 360 or can't use it anymore and have no way to get it replaced? Guess what, you're fucked. Sorry for the language, but you're flat fucked. All of those movie rentals and games are gone, there's no way to get reimbursed. The XBL Marketplace flat out sucks for downloading movies, end of statement.

On the PS3 you can move ANY game you've downloaded with the exception of WarHawk to 4 other PS3's at any time you want, regardless of what PS3 it was downloaded on. Don't believe me? If you've paid for Calling all Cars you can give it to 4 other PS3's for free and all of those PS3's can play together online and do whatever you want. It's completely legal and free, buy the game once and put it on 4 other consoles and anyone on that PS3 can play it *even online*. I know because I do it, it works.

Microsoft is not on track for a 10 year console, you can't put any external hard drive into the 360 like PS3 *there's a couple exceptions, but almost all external hard drives work*, you can't get Wi-Fi without a $100 add-on, there's no HD player in it like on the PS3, and 360 games can't require a hard drive without pulling a Sega CD and cutting off a portion of the audience. If you think games can require a hard drive on the 360 without pissing people off, just ask EA with people who can't play Burnout Paradise online because they don't have a hard drive.

The 360 doesn't have the technical specs of the PS3. If you want to make that argument, I've done a little math as to how to get the PS3 and 360 on an equal playing field. So let's do the math:

Xbox 360 Premium with 20 GB hard drive: $350
Wi-Fi add on: $100
Subscription to XBox Live: $50
Blu-Ray add on if Microsoft chooses to release it like rumored: aprox $200 *like HD-DVD originally did, and remember Blu-Ray has always cost more*.

That's about $700 to get anywhere near the features you get in a base-line PS3, which last I checked cost $400, not to mention I've totaled $700 BEFORE taxes. Yes people, the government is going to take a pretty penny if you want a 360, that's easily another $50 if you're getting the 360. This is also failing to mention that the 360 Xbox Live is an annual fee, its $50 every year. The PS3 has no bullshit annual subscription fees. I've already brought up how bullshit the fee is because Xbox Live charges you $50 to run off of your servers you already pay for with your internet provider, while the PS3 is totally free and allows you to play *still for free* off of Sony's own lag-free *99% of the time as long as you have basic high-speed* servers.

I could go on forever about my problems with XBox Live, but just for the fact of stretching the column on to long I'm going to stop here. Microsoft does not have the tools necessary to make the 360 run ten years, it's a simple fact. The next 360 will be out by 2011 as will the next Wii *unless they like shitty 3rd party support*. The PS3 is the only console built to run ten years, and the current generation's console wars are a marathon, not a sprint. Microsoft's going to run out of gas at this rate unless they make some BIG changes. They are definitely getting arrogant much like Sony did at the end of the PS2's lifespan, which is how they got into the mess that was the launch of the PS3 *they're still digging themselves out of it, but they've gotten much better*. Microsoft needs a big change and now!

On the argument of paying for a subscription, couldn't the same be said for games like Wow or Lineage II, where people will pay a monthly fee to play the game? If we go further, Sony did the same thing with Everquest I and II. So, it's not so much in the interest of Microsoft being the evil corporation. You pay for a service that spans an entire game line-up at a smaller fee of $50 a year than double or even triple that for one. I don't see too many people complain about paying for WoW than I do for XBL. Double standard? Could be.

Note: I have a 360, though my subscription is out. I'm not taking personal because it was well worth the $50. I might be broke, but it's still a fairly good service for what you're getting (minus the cheaters on SVR 2008 who get away with it because of damn THQ).

I find it a bit tough to believe Sony plans to ride the PS3 alone for 10 years. You really think there won't be a PS4 before 2017? You're looking at another two years - at the absolute max - before we start being deluged with PS4 news. There's no way they let Microsoft get out of the gate with a one-year lead on their next console.

If they don't claim a serious chunk of the market, I don't know that they'll be giving the PS3 the same soft send-off that the PS2 has received. They'll want people moving to the PS4 a lot faster to get that software moving.

DMC4 smoother gameplay on PS3?

Thats an actual lie. I know you have a bias, but to actually lie to get your point across seems silly.

The load times is true though. Having played both versions it is slightly noticable and a small advantage to the PS3 version.

i like your artical.. however in unfortunate that it is solely based on ps3 and the bashing of the other consoles

Sony don't dictate the pace of the console war. So what if the 360 wasn't built to last 10 years? One can't really blame Microsoft for that because to upset Sony's dominance, they need to rock Sony's comfortable boat that led to the long term viability of the PS and PS2. The 360 has done this, now they need to show that Sony's "Future proofing" will only work in their own little bubble.

The followup to the 360 needs to absolutely blow the PS3 out of the water, thus trashing Sony's dreams. Now I am not saying it will, but that is what Microsoft have to do, and have laid the foundations for.

The console wars are not any kind of race. they are about building. And Sony have built a tall tower with loose foundations. It can crumble down whereas Microsoft who are more willing to build safer, secure structures that are steadily more impressive is a eprfectl viable strategy and one that certainly has a chance of working. I'm no oracle, but right now both Sony and Microsoft have strengths and weaknesses in their long term planning.

How come you never mention the Wii in your trashing of the Xbox? The Wii will have a bigger impact on Sony or Microsoft than each other in terms of future design, price, and wide scale application. In all these console war articles, most never mention the Wii because it doesn't have blu-ray, or isn't "next gen". Still doesn't change the fact that it's blowing the doors off both systems.

As for your assumptions that hardware is the most important factor in buying a console, that is also untrue. It is, and always will be, about the games. Who has the bigger library, best exclusives, etc.

Blu-ray may be a simple stop gap in HD technology until internet delivery improves. With the ability to download HD content right now, why do you think that blu-ray will be so important? At a certain point, hard copies of media (CDs, DVDs, etc.) will go the way of the 8 track. On demand from your cable company, downloads from iTunes, Xbox Live, streaming from Netflix, Hulu, there are more than enough viable outlets that will grow and become the new standard. It might win the current format war, but there is no way it will ever beat the internet. Nothing will, it is the medium that will deliver ALL content to your home.

So sure, Blu-ray is important...now. Probably not that important a few years from now.

I think that Microsoft is actually in a better position for this very reason.
The life cycle of the console doesn't need to be 10 years, in fact, this is a horrible strategy. Computers aren't built with this in mind, so why is that smart for a console? I think Microsoft and Nintendo both realize this, that consumers will buy consoles over and over again, just don't overcharge them for it or load it with features they might not want or need, like blu-ray, to play games. Which is still the main reason to buy a console, right?

Posted By: Guest#7617 (Guest)  on February 05, 2008 at 02:31 PM

Even if every point you made there was true, Sony having a 10 year plan within one console is just plain ridiculous. First off, there WILL be a PS4 before 2017, whether they wanted to or not, it's just technological evolution. What is Sony gonna do come 3 years from now when Stereoscopic 3D is worked out and already being marketed on TV's and by Microsoft/Nintendo? Are they gonna wait 7 more years to make a new console with Stereoscopic 3D that will already be outdated by that time? That will never happen. That would literally end the console war between Microsoft and Sony, which Microsoft would win in that case.

You make a viable point to how XBLM is garbage for movies, I will definitely give you that. But it's funny how you have slipped away from comparing Sony Online to XBL and just went on a rant about how XBL should be free. Maybe you have realized that XBL is FAR superior than Sony Online (you did renew your subscription btw). Now I just don't get why you have such a problem with paying $50 a year for a high quality online experience opposed to a free service with Sony that is so irritating to use, you go back to XBL anyways. It just seems to me that you are siding with Sony because the masses prefer Microsoft's superior console, and you just want to be different. It doesn't seem anymore complicated than that. The facts are there to why Microsoft's product is far superior than Sony's (offline and online), but you do your best to focus on the bad things (as if everything is supposed to be perfection) and blow them WAY out of preportion.
If you weren't bending the truth and didn't have such a biased view, it would make for a better article. This is why I'm posting comments to you every column. I would just like to see a more well rounded column. If that's not what you do or this is actually supposed to be an anti-Microsoft column, I'm sorry and I will stop reading your inaccurate views

I think it's silly to complain about not being able to keep a movie you rented. I don't rent a movie from Blockbuster then complain when they expect me to return it. They don't claim it's a movie buying service, it's clearly stated that you're renting the movies. You can buy TV shows if you want. You an even delete them and redownload them for free in the future.

Throw out tech specs all you want, the games are all that matters.

If I want a computer running Linux, I'll flash an old box in my garage. Don't need it in my living room.

And as a side note, I personally download movies from On-Demand more than I purchase them. Mainly because I watch a movie once and then never again. Why spend 30 bucks for that when I can spend 2 for the same experience?

Sony is killing me with their lack of love for backwards compatability.

The thing is, none of the systems really have a ton of "great" games right now. That's the main knock especially against the Wii. But in the end, it really is the games that matter. The virtual consoles will maintain an edge for a while too.

And a 10 year plan is stupid. There's no way technology in any form right now will be able to compete in 10 years. It might last if they keep putting out ad ons, but by the time you drop all that money on ad ons, you could have had a new system anyway.

And I gotta give props to the public for remembering a gaming system is about playing games, not blue ray dvd's and surfing the net. We obviously all have computers so why would that even be a difference maker unless you plan to buy a blue ray player anyway?

We don't ALL have computers, Bahb. Some of us don't need the aggravation and just want to shove a disk in and play (yeah I'm in the minority). Regarding this whole technical debate, I couldn't care less. Sony needs to release some f%&#ing games I want to play so I don't feel like I wasted my money. For what I paid my PS3 should work like a computer without any alterations/ad ons. At a minimum the browser shouldn't be this pathetic. As for Blu-ray, it's awesome IF you have the means for a good HDTV and a movie with vivid colors and effects. And regarding hard drive size, what use is a 120GB hard drive anyway? If we all have computers what would ever go on a PS3 to require that much memory? All it does is make people who already have a PS3 feel like it's an inferior version, and they won't spend on another one. They'll just be reluctant to buy a PS4 when the time comes. In politics "It's the economy stupid". With consoles "It's the games stupid".

What's with the long DMC4 installing time? It takes forever on PS3. At least the game looks good.

DMC installs about 5 GB to the HDD, so that's the delay. It gives the PS3 slightly better load times than the 360 version, 2-3 seconds better on area loading, so I have to wonder what the load times were like without the mandatory install. Obviously Capcom hasn't mastered the PS3 yet - since other games avoid the install and don't have terrible loading.

lmao all that cussing put into how bad Xbox Live is and then u turnaround and resubscribed to it. Must not be to bad if you're forking over more money to get back on it. Sound like a junkie deciding whether to kick drugs. Very entertaining column u have here, I definitely had a good laugh

Personally, I own all three consoles and two computers. In regards to the comments calling larger hard drives in consoles being a waste of money, I agree for the most part. After messing around with the 360 and my computers media center to view video content and play music I ultimately decided it was too much of a hassle. I plugged an extra 120gb external drive I had into my PS3 and loaded all of my music and movies I had ripped from my dvd collection. Now I use the PS3 as my complete media server at home. This has also served to keep my laptop from getting slowed up with tons of data that is routinely virus scanned and defragged. PS3 is the multi-use console available in my opinion.

Ah, taking potshots at the 360 again, I see? As an owner of both consoles, I can tell you that these constant attacks towards the 360 have left me looking for my PS3 news elseware. You'd be better off just sticking to PS3 news so I don't have to swim through paragraphs full of fanboy rants before finding a nugget of interesting news in your article. You come off as a complete tool by buying into this "console war" nonsense. There's no need to take sides, this isn't World War 3. If you don't like the 360, stop bringing it up in your articles. People like you make me so glad that I can enjoy both consoles without letting personal bias get in the way of a good time. Long live the PS360 revolution!

If you idiots dont like what your reading on this report about the 360 then why are you reading it in the first place..... Its arrogant to defend your crap console on a report about the ps3. Personally I like honest opinions from a guy who actually owns both consoles. What the 360 community seems to keep forgetting about is THIS UPCOMING YEAR. Rant on and on and on about the 360 exclusives all you want.... bottom line is they suck. gran turismo 5, metal gear solid 4, god of war 3, haze, FFXIII, and the list goes on and on and on full of excellent exclusives. 360 is getting..... halo wars.... who cares. As for 360's bigger (current) library of games.... its kinda like the wii... most of them arent worth crap anyways. And AGAIN. the bigger library is only a right now thing... not a going to last till 2008 thing.

Thought this was a PS3 column, not a 'whine about the 360' column.
