The Game Plan 02.08.08: The Greatest Video Game Heroes...Ever (Part III)
Posted by James McGee on 02.08.2008

If it seems like this series of articles has been a little Nintendo-heavy in the early goings, well, guilty as charged. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: for my generation, Nintendo is video games. Even if they didn't invent a game genre, you'd be hard-pressed to say they didn't refine it at some point in the early days. Those guys just knew how to create great games and great characters, and we're all still reaping the benefits today. A lot of "serious" and "hardcore" gamers like to turn their nose up at Nintendo's fascination with family-friendly, wiggle-centric Wii games and touchy/feely DS titles, (again, I've been as guilty of this as anybody) but I doubt we'd even be playing games today if it weren't for Nintendo, so show the proper respect.

Now, who guessed that I'm spotlighting yet another Nintendo character this week? Yup, my quest for the greatest heroes in video game history once again takes me back to the original innovators. Nintendo may be known for its adorable creations, but Metroid proves that there is more to the company than the cutesy image. Samus Aran is one of gaming's greatest characters, because she and her games defy categorization and give those serious nay-sayers something to sink their teeth into. Thanks to Ms. Pac-Man, I can't call this week's subject the first lady of video games, but she's definitely the toughest, and certainly the most influential. Plus, she has that tiny, pixilated bikini and sexy-sleek Zero Suit going for her. There's just something about a woman who can kick butt and look good doing it… I'm James McGee, and here's The Game Plan.

So far in this series, I've talked a lot about how certain characters defined and influenced games in their particular genre. Mario perfected the platformer, while the action/adventure tradition owes its continued popularity to The Legend of Zelda and its protagonist, Link. Samus is no different, but she has managed to cross the genre boundary with greater effect than perhaps any other character. The original Metroid took the precision jumping of platformers and added a much heavier combat element. So Mario jumped on some heads, maybe shot the occasional fireball? Well, Samus has a gun for an arm that can fry, freeze, or zap all of the nasty alien baddies standing in her path. Next, the explorative elements of Zelda were cranked up to 11 with Metroid's amazingly non-linear design. With the exception of later games in the Castlevania series, there really isn't anything quite like Metroid's game design. Whereas it's easy to trace platformer back to Mario and action/adventure back to Link, you have to look at a much wider range of descendents to find Metroid's influence—everything from RPGs, to survival-horror, to modern shooters. The series continues to defy simple categories, and its influence on other games does the same.

You've come a long way, baby.

But this isn't a series about great games. It's about great characters, and what really set Metroid apart from its contemporaries, and what has proven to be its most unexpectedly influential element, was Samus herself. She obviously made it okay to be a girl in the testosterone-dominated landscape of game heroes, but I'd go out on a limb and take it one step further. Samus was the first bonafide video-game bad@$$ of any gender. Mario had Luigi and, later, Toad and the Princess to help him out. Link is forever running into kindly old wizards who give him swords and whatnot. But Samus flies solo. She gets dropped into an isolated, alien world, and proceeds to lay waste to every ugly beast that dares give her a side-ways glance. The only help she has are the weapons she finds scattered about the environment—ice beams, morph balls, power-bombs, etc. She's the quintessential one-woman army—tough, resourceful, and deadly.

So, one person against a never-ending flood of bad-guys, armed with nothing but her favorite gun…am I the only one who thinks that description of Miss Aran sounds exactly like 99% of all the action heroes snarling their way through video games today? When she finally jumped into the 3D era, a lot of fans were horrified to learn that Metroid Prime was going to be a first-person-shooter. But once you saw it in action, you realized just how perfectly it matched the character. There has always been a sense of loneliness surrounding Samus, and the Prime cycle has really managed to enhance that feeling of isolation by letting players literally experience everything through her eyes. The FPS has always been about immersion and stacking the odds against you…qualities that have defined the Metroid series from the very beginning. Is it possible that Samus unknowingly invented the FPS all those years ago (minus the "F," naturally)? Well, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it. Halo, Half-Life, Quake, all the way back to Doom (Samus' arm cannon = the original "BFG")…the only thing they did was change the perspective. Samus set the standard for lone heroes gunning-down the alien horde, and no one has ever been able to do it quite as well.

Not only could Samus kick Master Chief's butt, but she does a much better job at filling out a cybernetic exo-skeleton.

In a stable of characters defined by their cute, cuddly nature, Samus Aran gives action-hungry gamers something to sink their teeth into. Metroid's unique game design is the perfect compliment to a leading lady that puts most muscle-bound action heroes running and gunning around modern games to shame. Talk about breaking the mold; Samus blew it to bits. She may seem out of place next to Mario, Link, Pokemon and Kirby…but who's going to have the guts to tell her so?

Next week, I wrap up my look at the greatest video game heroes of all time before moving on to the villains. I'm pretty confident that the character I choose for next week's column will be a big surprise to everyone, so I'll see you then.

Nintendo fanboy much? The fact that you didn't list Solid Snake, and only Nintendo characters, severly undermines the point of article. It should be entitled the top three nintendo characters (not including mario). that would make more sense. Link has received zero character growth since he has been created. The same thing goes Samus. I want to know something. Are you on cocaine? LSD? Some type of illegal drug? Your list would make sense, in a sad, sad way. Nintendo isn't the end all, be all representation for videogames. I was born on September 7th, 1981, and I don't let Nintendo rule my life. I guess I did a thing called evovling.

It's not James McGee's fault if it so happens that that three most iconic and greatest heroic characters in gaming happen to be Nintendo characters, there is, you know a reason why Nintendo have been the longest survivors in this industry.

For what it's worth, Solid Snake definitely deserves the fourth slot but as there is only 3, c'est la vie.

You evovled, eh? Perhaps you, are on, some sort of illegal drug, that makes you, bad at comma, usage, and mess with, your spelling? That would make your response make some sort of sense...in a sad, sad way.

Come on. Mario, Link, and Samus are the Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman of video games. The fact that he's only done Nintendo characters so far means nothing. He's done the holy trinity of gaming. He's done three articles, and he did the arguably the three most recognizable, influential characters in gaming. This isn't like he's writing articles about Bubble Bobble or the Ice Climbers.

David, he CLEARLY explained as to why he has been Nintendo friendly throughout this series of columns, and for good reason as well. His points are more than valid in every way. You talk about how you have "evolved" as a gamer. Well good for you, I have as well. But in order for you to evolve, you still need that starting point. Nintendo DID start it all in a mainstream fashion, so they should get the deserved credit. The fact is that if it wasn't for Nintendo, gaming and characters would not be the way they are today. Sure people are gonna be pissed that Master Chief is not one of the greatest ever, and that is debatable. But we wouldn't have Master Chief if Nintendo didn't step up when they did. Again, debatable, but the thing about evolution is that it cannot be a dramatic change. In this case, if Nintendo never existed, we would have jumped from Atari/Sega to XBOX and Playstation. Seems very feasible now, but that would have been way too big of a jump in that time. There some nuggets for you since you want to bring the whole evolution game into play.

As for you James, you keep doing what you're doing. You clearly know where respect is deserved, and that is with Nintendo, I 100% agree

oh didn't u just owned?
awesome I agree with every single thing u just said
and yes this is a debatable point, but Nintendo will always get the credit cuz they are the ones that have kept this industry alive, and today have made it bigger and i assure you that MS and Sony have a lot to thank Nintendo for...

Evolving? It sounds more like your bitching because characters you like havent been listed yet. Solid Snake is one hell of a character but he hasnt been around as long as Mario, Link or Samus and as a character he doesnt command half the respect that these characters do. The revalation that Samas was a woman at the end of Metroid was a huge thing back in the day and, while I doubt, paved the way for characters like Lara, having a kick ass female character as the lead and not having her being captured and looking for help broke boundries. Mario perfected and continues to perfect the platform genre. Link IS action RPG and Samus has cornered her own corner of the market and these characters have continued to own these genres for over 20 years. That is the reason they are 1,2 and 3.

I'm a huge Playstation supporter, they've been the top dog for a few years now. Yes, the Wii might be winning the console wars now, but we all know the PS3 will reign again once the outrageous price lowers. Still, Nintendo started it all, so this article got the point across.

Plus, when you get right down to it, the majority of the most well-known video games heroes are basically Nintendo related. He's hasn't even talked about Castlevania's Simon Belmont yet. Might as well add Kirby and Mega Man. There's also Starfox.

Sega had Sonic, basically. Playstation had Lara Croft. Then there is Solid Snake. The point is, when one company/system is responsible for about 80% of the most recognizble characters in video games, it's not bias, it's logic to talk about them more.

Posted By: JLAJRC (Guest)  on February 08, 2008 at 05:20 PM

Well, I'm not talking pop-culture impact. I'm talking about character development, dialog, character actions, and everything else that help to establish a character. Mario, Link, Samus, etc. are horrible characters from a literary standpoint. They are one dimesional, and lack any form of character growth (new flash: character groth isn't uncovering new abilities). Solid Snake has a plethora of detail involving his psyche. Tell me ANY character (not in a jRPG) that has experience the same amount of evolution that compares to Solid Snake? There is none. Heck, I dare you to illustrate how these characters are superior to the characters in the ORIGINAL Final Fantasy.

Mainly because they have grown out of just being video game characters and are icon of their genre, icons of a company and are well known throughout the world. People, who dont even play games, granted, may not know their names, but will still recognise them. Snake didnt become remotly interesting until MSG. Also, wheres does it say that characters should be rated on growth, dialogue and actions. I would rather they be measures on history and impact. Snake has made an impact, yes, but when compared to the listed 3 he's no where to be seen. He's featuring in a game that STARS these 3 characters. The dialogue I dont agree with either. If Samus or Link started to talk they would lose alot of their luster to me. Snake is always talking about Metal Gear and Life on the Battlefield. That bores me to be honest. Id rather play a game than watch it...and thats not to say I'm not a fan of the Metal Gear games, because I really am and cant wait for 4, but if given the chance to play a silent Link or a talk talk Snake, Link would win hands down.

Nintendo fanboyism or anti-fanboyism aside...Samus shouldnt be on the list, in my opinion.

Except for the "woman" part, this also describes the protagonist/s of Contra. He took out a horde of aliens by himself (in 1-player mode). Weren't Lance or Bill the first bad asses then?

Mario, Link..... Samus?

Starting to notice a trend.

Contra was originally released in the arcades in 1987, where as Metroid was released first, in 1986, so in answer to your question I'd have to say no, especially since Samus came first and she only ever flies solo.

Posted By: FDuk200k (Guest)  on February 09, 2008 at 08:25 PM

Metroid is the most overrated game franchise. Mario, Link deserve their spot, but other than being the 'first' video game heroine, samus has done stuff all. Anyone who will argue that she is an icon, go and ask anyone who knows nothing about games, they wouldnt know what the hell you are on about. Ryu, Scorpion, Sonic, Lara Croft, hell even Jill Valentine deserve more of a mention than samus.
