The 10th Hour 2.08.08: Top 10 Video Game Songs
Posted by Derek Robbins on 02.08.2008

Hello and welcome to the 10th hour! Before I get started, there are a couple of things that I wish to hit on.

-I'm currently listening to the enormous Brawl soundtrack. It's on every time I've played WoW in the past…week or so (or however long ago it was ripped). I still have fifty or so tracks to go (!!!) but I have to say…this game probably has the most complete soundtrack of all time. I think they really went all out with this game, and this gigantic soundtrack is further proof of that.

-I wish the Cubs would hurry up and trade for Brian Roberts. Not that he's what we need – we REALLY need more pitching – but…if he were added to our team, I think we'd clearly have the finest offense in the national league. Really, the only person on the starting nine who can't hit (assuming they'd move Fukudome to center, to move DeRosa to Right in order for Roberts to play second) is Theriot. And really, if you only have ONE person who can't hit…you're doing pretty good.

-For anyone who cares about my WoW progress – the one of you – I am now level 32 and climbing. I aim to have my mount (aka be level 40) by this time next week. If anyone wanted to hang around, I play on the Demonsoul server under the name of Melthalynn. I used to be on Dark Iron as Melthazalt…but apparently it's hard for a hunter to get into raids. Bah.

Okay, let's hit some feedback from last week.

Reader Feedback

First, let me address the "lack of God of War" comments. As much as I do enjoy the game, I think the SQUARE, SQUARE, SQUARE, SQUARE, SQUARE, SQUARE, TRIANGLE combat can get quite bothersome. I gave an honorable mention, but I didn't think it was quite worthy of being on the list. The series is a tad over-rated in my opinion. Good. But over-rated.

As always, their stuff is in italics, mine is in a neutral font.

Let's lead off with a comment by Sean McCabe

I don't get the love for FFX and KHII when those games are absolutely terrible
and among the worst RPGs I have ever played, but oh well. Hell, I don't agree
with a single game on that list besides what is at number 1. But that says a
lot about the sheer variety on the PS2, everyone's list is going to be vastly
different, and saying that, here is mine.

Honorable mentions: Yakuza, Clock Tower 3, Shadow Hearts, Grandia 3, Dragon
Quest VIII

10. Onimusha 2
9. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
8. Suikoden V
7. King of Fighters XI
6. Ico
5. Haunting Ground
4. Shadow Hearts Covenant
3. God Hand
2. Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
1. Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistance

Hmmm. Interesting list. I actually meant to include God Hand in the honorable mentions, but I forgot about it. That game doesn't get near the play that it deserves…and for whatever reason, critics didn't like it. I guess it was either A-) Too Hard or B-) the reviewers weren't paid off by the company, so they gave it bad marks to teach them a lesson They didn't like it.

I've actually played most games on this list – with the exception of Haunting Ground and Nocturne (sadly) – and I agree that they could be made a case for. I think Shadow Hearts was probably robbed of a spot on my list, but…I think my list was already pretty RPG heavy so I needed to make a couple of cuts.

I have to say, I'm glad someone else liked Metal Gear Solid 2. Ocelot came into the spotlight as the greatest villain of all time in that game…so it's good to see it get some credit.

Also, you are absolutely right. There are probably…hundreds of different variations of ten when it comes to the PS2. It's really, really hard to narrow the list down.

This next comment is from Raaaaaandy

r u cracy stupid ass top 10 games how old r u?? I bet like 10 thats why u like
that ugly japanese shit. the firt 2 r right but the other ones take them out
yooo

No u.

Here is a comment from Samer

This is list is too much RPG oriented.. Which is really unfair.

I agree. I didn't mean it to turn out like that, but it just did. I felt that the PS2 featured a glorious rebirth of the JRPG…so I think that's where my mind went.

A couple of things I wish to mention before the final comment. First of all, for everyone who said Resident Evil 4…the game was ineligible. It was released on the Gamecube first, so it was technically a port. Ports had to be called off. If that weren't the case, RE 4 would have made it (along with Prince of Persia). I would also like to mention that, while I have played Shadow of the Colossus, I did not like it as much as most people. I don't know why, so I can't really explain it to ya'. I just didn't have much fun while playing. Finally, someone also mentioned Fatal Frame. I like the game, I really, really do…I'm just not sure I would rank it among the best games on the PS2. It deserves more credit, but I'm not going to give it THAT much.

Also, I've never played Silent Hill 2. I really want to, though.

Here is one from Vitamin D

Yeah, I understand about Mario DDR. To each their own.

So now to the PS2. Must of been difficult. First off, I'm VERY thankful you
left God of War off of there. I mean it's a cool game but not as cool as
everyone makes it out to be. But I guess this is the closest people can get to
"Ninja Gaiden" on their Sony consoles.

I digress, the list is interesting. Everyone already said it and I guess I'm
another, no Shadow of The Colossus? I can see that though. Not for everyone,
though I enjoy it.

We've talked about it before on e-mail but surprised, once again, of no Odin
Sphere. heh But I know your reasons.

DMC3:SE is a cool game but not sure if I'd rank it that high. I'd say a 7 at
the most to be honest.

Final Fantasy X was mediocre in my opinion. The sphere grid I thought was
stupid. There was a few elements I enjoyed but the fact that sometimes you
"level" but get nothing was retarded.

Overall, pretty good list. Outside what I said, I agree. Once again, thank you
for not listing God of War. And Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence is simply
perfect. They definately raised the bar with that re-release. I just wish that
Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution was ranked 6 instead of an honorable mention. =)

For those who didn't know, my reason for not including Odin Sphere was really quite simple: While it plays like a lost SNES side-scroller…it really felt like I was playing the same game six times in a row. Good story? Sure. But man does it get repetitive.

Man, am I the ONLY person who loved Final Fantasy X? Hahaha…I don't know why there's so much hatred in the RPG community for it, but…maybe I just have horrible, horrible taste.

As for VF 4: E. I have to be honest, the game was originally supposed to be on the list but I accidentally scraped it for a different game. By the time I noticed, it was too late so I had to delegate it to honorable mention. Before you ask, I forget which one it was…but it really attests to the PS2's quality that there are so many possible games for this list.

The final comment is from Simpleton

Good list, I would put the first DMC ahead of the third as for me it was the
first game I played that really drove home to me that I owned a 128-bit
console. It looked and played like what I thought all videogames would be like
in the future when I was a young 'un.

However, I REALLY can't stand MGS 3. Don't get me wrong, it's a very well made
game, and I certainly wouldn't say that it's objectively bad, it's just that
the presentation and story really put me off playing. The cut-scenes were even
worse than SoL (IMO), as they mainly seemed to consist of boring fighting that
lasts forever. The scene were Snake gets found out and is pounded by
lightning-guy is particularly farcical. The boss fights have some good ideas,
but they start to outstay their welcome fairly rapidly. The sniper battle with
The End kinda sums the whole game up for me, as at first it's the most amazing
thing ever, but by the end you're completely tired. Oh, and don't forget THE
FUCKING LADDER.

I really loved MGS 3, but I can totally understand why someone wouldn't like it. The series has become so cinematic that it probably drove off a lot of gamers. I like your analogy of the fight with "The End" by the way. The game can get a bit old, but for me…I loved it throughout.

Since you hated MGS 3, you may not like this week's list…

Top 10 Videogame Songs

This week features songs that have appeared in videogames. Now. There are hundreds upon hundreds of videogame songs, so I'm sure I left out your favorite. Make sure to comment about what you would have put in instead.

The rules this week are simple. WITH ONE EXCEPTION, every song on this list has originated from a videogame. That means games such as "Guitar Hero", "Rock Band", and "DDR" are disqualified. So anybody wanting some Ziggy Stardust will have to look elsewhere.

Also, games not released yet in America have been DQed. This mostly means Mother 3, yet again. Ouendan 2 as well. My reasoning for this is…though I can hear a lot of these songs on the internet, a pretty large audience is missing out on it over here. Since those people miss out on it, I'm simply going to count them out.

10-) Emerald Hill (Sonic 2) - The very first game I got with my Sega Genesis was Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Honestly, I didn't even play the original until after Sonic 3 came out…so this song holds a lot of fond memories for me. Honestly, I can recite the whole thing from memory. Hell, whenever I think about it – even while listening to it from the Brawl soundtrack – I somehow mentally insert the squeal of Sonic's feet from when he slams on the breaks. While some people may insist that Ice-Cap from Sonic 3 is the best "2D" Sonic song, I personally beg to differ. Emerald Hill is possibly the most iconic piece of music from a videogame – discounting, of course, world 1-1 from Super Mario Brothers – and holds a fond home in many-a-gamers' heart. While Sonic may not be quite what he used to be…when you listen to this track, you'll be remembering a time when games were simpler and when Sonic hadn't "sold out". No. At this point, Sonic the Hedgehog was Sonic the MOTHERFUCKING Hedgehog. Really, I prefer a gaming world in which Sonic is like that.

Click here to listen to the song

Wow - I have a great idea! I'm going to run Sonic the fuck over!

9-) Aeris's theme (FF VII - Now, I am not the biggest fan of Final Fantasy VII. I have admitted as much several times in the past. Having said that…Aeris's theme is simply a wonderful work of art. Not only is the song beautiful, but it is also quite tragic. It captures the emotions that you should be feeling after Aeris tragically departs your party. A thing that is common-place with your typical Final Fantasy VII fan is that they loved Aeris. For YEARS after the game was released, people desperately tried to revive this character even though there was no way to do so – outside of a gameshark, of course. Her theme captures the emotions of the character, and even as a guy who doesn't particularly enjoy Aeris I can't help but get caught up in the emotions of the song. Great job by Nobuo Uematsu.

Click here to listen to the song.

Aeris - Aeris and Zack from Advent Children

8-) Sweet Sweet Galaxy (Super Mario Galaxy) - This song is an updated track from Super Mario Brothers 3, though I'm not quite sure what the original one was called. That said, whenever I hear this song play I can't help but whistle along and it made Sweet Sweet Galaxy one of the more enjoyable levels in Super Mario Galaxy. Really though, the entire soundtrack of Super Mario Galaxy is quite remarkable and one of my favorites of all time. I had to choose one from the game and I chose the one that simply made me the happiest, and this one was it. Really…as far as Galaxy goes you can't go wrong at all. For those of you who grew up as Nintendo Kids, try listening to this song and not wax nostalgically about your past.

Click here to listen to the song.

UMG - One of the many things Mario Galaxy does well.

7-) Elite Beat Agents cover of Jumping Jack Flash - This would be the exception to the rule that was mentioned above. Honestly, the very first time I heard this song OUTSIDE of the game…I didn't like it, but Elite Beat Agents made this song very enjoyable. The unique rhythm-based game-play of Elite Beat Agents allowed for an immersive experience with various different types of songs. The final song in the game was Jumping Jack Flash, and it feels like they pumped the difficulty up for that one…because it is hard as hell to beat. Time after time, I'd try to beat JJF and I'd always fail…but when I finally beat it, it was really rewarding. If for whatever reason you HAVEN'T played EBA, get on it right now. The soundtrack appears to be average, but…EBA has the best cover-artists around, turning an average soundtrack into an actually pretty good one. I cannot say enough good things about this.

Click here to listen to this song.

BONUS: Click here to listen to Ouendan 2's (Japanese EBA. The sequel to it, though.) JJF equivalent: Sekai wa Sore o Ai to Yobundaze!

Hurr - EBA. EBA. EBA.

6-) STILL ALIVE (Portal) - Portal was one of the finest games released in the last year and yet it was only a couple of hours long. The game was well noted for its high caliber writing and wit. Very few games coax me to laugh, but this one was able to…so this song gets a mention. The very first time you hear it, it is literally a laugh riot. This is the ending to the game, there really isn't much of a cutscene (there is a scene, but…I mean, it's nothing special). It's absolutely shocking and speaks levels to the quality of the song that people consider this a good ending to such a fantastic game. If you haven't heard it yet, you simply must.

Click here to listen to this song. Seriously, do it. You won't regret it.

Wut? - Aww...

5-) Rival Appears! (Pokemon Red/Blue) - Say what you will about Pokemon. It's a game that people of all ages can enjoy, and I think it's quite admirable. From the original game, the song that sticks out the most to me is Blue's (Gary Oak, for those goofy anime fans) theme which is this one. Throughout the game, Blue is a complete dick to you and this song goes quite well with him. I mean, the dude shows up relatively early in the game and claims to have captured 80 pokemon! Like that was even possible at that point in the game! While a lot of you may complain about the placement of this song on the list, I think you really had to be there to appreciate this. I was at ground-zero when pokemon mania hit, and I gotta tell ya'…this song is very memorable to me.

Click here to listen to this song.

Gary Oak - The face of evil.

4-) Hyrule Field (Zelda: Ocarina of Time) - A majority of people think this is the finest Zelda game of all time. I'm under the impression that this is because this is the first 3D Zelda…but I could always be wrong. The game is fun none-the-less. Anyhow, the song that sticks out the most in my mind from this game would be…the very first time you set out onto Hyrule Field and you hear this beautiful song. It's really an adventuring song at its finest. Honestly, there are a ton of quality Zelda songs that could have made this list, but I ended up settling on just one – even though I probably could have used more. I honestly use this song when I think about the series, so I have to give Hyrule field the nod.

Click here to listen to this song. Obviously, this track also appears in Smash Brothers Brawl.

Huh? - One of the few times I've mentioned non-cel-shaded Link. What?

3-) Live and Learn (Sonic Adventure 2) - A lot of people don't like the music in the later Sonic games, but…I feel the way this song comes off is just excellent. Sonic and Shadow turn into Super Sonic and Shadow and fight the prototype of the Ultimate Life form. During the course of the fight and the transformation the two go through, this song plays in the background…and it really makes the fight sound significant. On top of that, whenever something intense happens in a game (or hell, even during a sporting event or something) you can turn on the music and it just seems to fit. It feels like a universal song, I must say. As far as the 3D Sonic games are concerned, it seems that either you are a fan of Live and Learn or Open Your Heart. I fall into the former camp. I feel Open Your Heart is just lacking something while this game just…seems to flow really well. Regardless of your opinion on Sonic's transition into the third dimension, I feel that this is a song that you must listen to.

Click here to listen to this song. Again, SSBB has this song. This explains the background.

Yay! - I may not care much for Shadow, but he was actually tolerable in this game.

2-) Lonely Rolling Star (Katamari Damacy) - I have to be quite honest here: I feel that Katamari Damacy has one of the best video game soundtracks ever. Every song on the entire thing is very catchy and can get stuck in your head. Nothing says "Roll up the World" like catchy J-Pop, am I right? I could have included multiple songs from the game, but I ended up settling on just one. I think that Lonely Rolling Star is the best track from the game and deserves your praise, so I'm ranking it up here. Katamari Damacy may have lost its charm when it comes to its sequels, but it doesn't change the fact that the soundtrack is one of the best ever.

Click here to listen to this song. Hell, search the internet for the entire Katamri soundtrack. You will not regret this decision.

Whee - Rollin', rollin', rollin'

1-) Snake Eater (Metal Gear Solid 3) - The title track of the game and a very good one at that. The whole thing comes off as very James Bond like, which is fitting…as the game itself can come off that way at times. One of the most memorable moments in Snake Eater utilizes this song and it is listed above. You're about half-way through the game and you begin climbing a really, really long ladder. On your way up, the song starts playing out of nowhere and it just fits. It may seem kind of chest from the outside, but I have to tell you…I just thought it was awesome. I think the Metal Gear series as a whole has pretty good music, but this song just takes the cake in my opinion. Cheesy or Awesome, it's up to you…but I think when it plays at the appropriate time, it is quite the awesome song and probably my favorite videogame related song ever.

Click here to listen to this song.

Sigh - I have too many references to the end of this game in my columns. It's depressing.

Honorable Mentions:
Eyes on Me (FF VIII)
Theme of Love (Mother 3) *INELIGIBLE*
FF VI Opera Part I
Part 2
Super Mario Brothers Overworld Theme. Arguably the most recognizable song in videogame history
Theme of Laura (Silent Hill 2) - Ineligible because I have not played it, but it sounds ridiculously awesome so I figure it warranted a mention

Well that's it for this week. As always, if you have any comments feel free to comment below or send an e-mail to Dragonmaster_Alex_158@hotmail.com or Desipiot@hotmail.com Your choice.

Well for a person who defends Final Fantasy X it's completely unbelievable that you left off the theme from the battle with Sin/Jecht! It's Nobuo Uematsu doing Metal, very unexpected and very badass!

Posted By: Kurruption (Guest)  on February 08, 2008 at 01:41 AM

not a bad little list, I agree with the Sonic 2 Emerald Hill theme, it's pretty catchy. I don't have a top 10 but 3 songs that stuck with me was:
White Jungle stage- Sonic adventure 2 (still get pumped when I hear this)

Funky Dealer (Jet Set Radio Future)

Any of the songs from Guilty Gear XX

what no love for simple and clean from kingdom hearts i tink its catchy

It's nice to see Aeris' Theme get some love. It has to be my favorite from any Final Fantasy game I've played (rivaled only by Sephiroth's orchestral theme), and I am sure anyone will agree, it's hard to pick a favorite, as those games are stacked with great sound tracks. Nobuo Uematsu is a bloody god of video game soundtracks.

As a side note, I always prefeered the classic Overworld Theme song for Legend of Zelda over Hyrule Field, it felt more iconic to me, and it brings back great memories of Link's Awakening.

But over all, great column again.

Not to mention the many other songs in Final Fantasy like FF2's "Main Theme", FF6's "Dancing Mad", FFMQ's "Battle Theme", and the many versions of Victory, Mog, & Crystal themes.

All of these could have made your honorable mentions list at least.

The Super Mario theme should have won #1 hands down. Ask virtualy anybody who grew up in the 80s to hum the tune and they probably can.

Posted By: Ty Huston (Registered)  on February 08, 2008 at 09:58 AM

Haha, you could have put the whole Kingdom Hearts soundtrack on here.

Ditto the person who mentioned FFX's Otherworld; then again, that game had a phenomenal soundtrack.

I just can't believe you missed FF7's world map theme. That song is just gorgeous, yet powerful and mysterious as well.

But Snake Eater? hmm.. I know you like the game, as do I; but that song repulsed me.

And for an Earthbound lover as yourself, I can't believe you forget those songs: I mean, with the exception of a few songs, that game has the best 16 bit soundtrack ever. Fourside, Onett, the Starman battle theme, Giygas, Magicant, Flying Man, it just keeps going. Amazing soundtrack.

Also... Kingdom Hearts 2:

'Sanctuary'

Enough said, right there.

i love the nod to the hyrule field song. i use to come home from work and jump on epona for a few minutes to unwind before delving into any actual gameplay. great addition to a wonderful list.

What?! NOTHING from Castlevania?! Man, that's a crime. I mean, who doesn't love the theme for the first level of the original Castlevania? Or anything from Symphony of the Night?

Posted By: xjuggernaughtx (Guest)  on February 08, 2008 at 02:18 PM

good list, but no Mega Man at all? Dr Wily Stage 1 from Mega Man 2 is the best song in video game history, Clash on the big bridge from FFV is also great

Posted By: Rpglord95 (Guest)  on February 08, 2008 at 03:14 PM

Gotta totally agree with Mega Man 2: Dr. Wiley Stage 1 theme...that song is the SHIT!!

Posted By: Ramon Aranda (Registered)  on February 08, 2008 at 03:33 PM

Totally, Symphony of the night had one of the best sountracks of all time. One of the few with mass apeal to non-gamers too..

Posted By: Bahb (Guest)  on February 08, 2008 at 03:34 PM

The music in Pac-Man is probably the second most recognible video game music next to Super Mario Bros.

The Tetris music is also catchy.

Then, of course, there is the Legend of Zelda music.

Posted By: JLAJRC (Guest)  on February 08, 2008 at 05:32 PM

I just want to add the Mute City theme from F-Zero X, To me that's the rockingest music I've ever moved very fast to.

Oh, for...

Sweet Sweet? Of all the orchestral pieces on SMG, you chose the Synthed one?

Gusty Garden Galaxy. The most epic Mario song ever. This deserves to be on top.

What about the LUNAR series of games? There was some great BGM in those (referring to the PS1 remakes, which were packed with the soundtracks as an added bonus courtesy of Working Designs (RIP, Working Designs)), and Both "Silver Star Story" & "Eternal Blue" feature great vocal songs as well ("Luna's Boat Song" in 'Silver Star Story' being a personal favorite).

Those are absolutely wonderful songs!

Also, the Hamasaki Ayumi vocal tracks from "Thousand Arms," while nothing great in the realm of video game music, hold a special place for me as they introduced me to Hamasaki Ayumi's music.

Seriously, though, someone out there's gotta echo the LUNAR love!?

Good stuff, this column made me spend this afternoon just going through YouTube and kicking back and relaxing to some of my personal favorite tunes. Donkey Kong Country 2 may have my favorite soundtrack of all original music, and glad someone mentioned a song from it (Tack Angel). Overall I loved the Earthworm Jim 2 soundtrack which included some "groovy" original stuff and then some classical music. Sonic 2 definitely had a sweet soundtrack too, thanks for linking one of the songs (Chemical Zone also has some great music).

I hope this spacing works, it doesn't for me in the wrestling forum. Otherwise you may want to reject this upcoming list and links due to it looking like a mess.

"Anything But Tangerines" - Earthworm Jim 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ai796m3Qlc

"Leon's Theme" - Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwPbP4tFl0Y

"King K. Rool Boss Theme" - DKC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O_53rg1o9A&feature=related

"Bramble Scramble" - DKC2; same song Tack Angel mentioned
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaMcOo-k23U

"Web Woods" - DKC2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5o_XqDmS1c&feature=related

"Castle Crush; Toxic Tower" - DKC2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wjl4V_G8Fws

All good stuff to me. Again, if my formatting didn't work, you may want to reject this post to avoid it looking like a mess.

D'oh, didn't even notice that... my bad! Guess I need to read better... still, since the LUNAR music didn't make the top 10, they damn sure should've been in the honorable mention section (IMHO). And I agree, as well, that "Still Alive" is an addicting tune!

Don't know if it counts, but here i go again:

Raging STorm (Geese Howard's theme) is one of the GREATEST theme songs of all time...as well as Castlevania's Bloody Tears

Dammit, i almost forgot!

if you do not find yourself whistling that song later on, you dont have a soul

Yeah, here I am once again. I can't seem to leave, can I? haha

Don't get me wrong, there is some cool aspects about Final Fantasy X. Auron is an awesome character. Switching between characters mid-battle is genius and Blitz Ball is just awesome. It may not be my favorite but it's not the worst either.

Top 10 Video Game Songs....honestly, this would have to be THE hardest list for me ever. This goes beyond "choosing your favorite child." This is like asking to choose who your favorite parent is. It's just damned diffucult. While I enjoy the list, I think people have already voiced a good opinion of songs not on there.

Theme to Wild Arms. Now you know that whistling is cool.

No Castlevania? No Vampire Killer? Nothing from Symphony of The Night? Bold move my friend. Bold move.

No Ridley's theme from Metroid? Or any of the Metroid music in SSB:M?

Truth be told, there's a million of great songs in video games new or old. Personally a favorite of my brother and I is the song in Rocket Knight Adventures when you fought Axel Gear with a techno beat. Forgot the name of it but it is simply bad ass! If you play the game, go to Sound Test. It was either song 9, 11 or 14 (I can't remember).

Anyways, great list and can't wait until next article!
