Achievement Unlocked 02.28.08: Making it Count
Posted by Rod Oracheski on 02.28.2008

Take it from me folks, when you get the sniffles you don't need to go to the hospital. Just call in sick and hit the couch with a blanket to enjoy some quality soap operas. When you get a fever, it's time to consider that hospital visit. When your fever tops 40ºC (104ºF) though, it's time to go to the hospital - period.

Not me, though. When my fever hit 40ºC, I figured I'd tough it out like the pioneers did and I covered a hockey game. Smart idea. Turns out a lot of the pioneers - who were at least smart enough to stay at home when sick - more often than not died from those minor infections and diseases, something people really gloss over when talking about the 'good old days' like they were there!

Thanks to modern medicine I'm not dead, but I did test the limits of safe Benylin usage. I can see why it's so popular with the homeless...

Anyway, as I mentioned in an earlier column, while I really like the idea of Achievements, I don't really care about Gamerscore all that much. Unfortunately that means that, when a game doles out Achievements in a 'boring' manner, the thrill of 'achieving' is lost. We all know games like that - a game with 10 levels and 10 Achievements, one for beating each level.

Fortunately some developers award more than just Gamerscore along with the Achievements - developers like BioWare with recent hit Mass Effect.

Giving in-game rewards for playing the game, not hitting Marketplace and buying them? Talk about old-school...

The most obvious Achievement-based rewards are the Expert/Mastery/Specialist ones. Get 150 kills with the Shotgun, Assault Rifle, or Sniper Rifle, for example, and you unlock that talent for your next character.

This allows for a greater degree of freedom in your future playthroughs, while also encouraging you to play through the game again. After one run through the game as a Soldier, for example, you could play as an Adept (a strictly 'magic' using class normally restricted to pistol only) who can wield a Shotgun or Assault Rifle.

If you played through the game as an Adept first, then perhaps you'd prefer a second run as a Soldier who can use Singularity, Throw, or Warp? Maybe an Adept who can also use Hack on Geth enemies? There are a lot of potential combinations, of varying power, to experiment with - all powered by unlocking these Achievements.

These Achievements also pushed me to try out skills that I likely wouldn't have used, or at least used nearly as much. Neural Shock, for example, which wasn't a skill that I saw the power of until I was 'forced' to use it because I wanted the Achievement.

Unfortunately, while unlocking a talent through a completion Achievement was nice, it was also limited. You could only unlock one talent for a new character build, leaving you with a finite number of 'useful' builds to experiment with.

Fortunately that's where bonuses granted by other Achievements picked up the slack. These bonuses, generally percentage increases, provide rewards that affect every character you have created, as well as any you'll create in the future.

Unlocking Completionist, for example, something easily done on your first playthrough of the game, will bump up your experience rewards by 5%. You should also get Dog of War and Geth Hunter Achievements on your first playthrough, granting +10% health and +10% shield strength, respectively.

You'll probably also hit 50 on your first play, granting another +10% experience reward bump from the Power Gamer Achievement.

On one play of the game (getting the Soldier and Krogan ally, Dog of War, Geth Hunter, Completionist, Power Gamer, and Tactician Achievements) will leave you entering a second play with +15% experience rewards, +10% damage reduction, +10% health, +20% shield strength, and regenerating 1 hp/second.

Complete the game twice and you can stack on another 5% to weapon damage for the Long Service Medal Achievement. Got to 60 with a character on the second play? Give yourself another +5% experience rewards for that Extreme Power Gamer Achievement.

It's not all fun and games, of course. If you want to beat the game on Insanity, you'll probably want to get a good deal of the Achievements out of the way first. Having all those bonuses really helps get that last Achievement - Medal of Valor - and the N7 gamer pic that accompanies it.

Sadly, thanks to being sick as hell, I haven't played much this week aside from Lost Odyssey and Call of Duty 4 multiplayer. Lost Odyssey does none of the things that Mass Effect did right with Achievements - including giving out four 125-point Achievements, one for completing each disc.

Still, it's a fantastic game that I wish I'd had a clearer head for. The in-game stories are great, but when you're floating along in a cough syrup haze it's easy to doze off and lose the thread...

Speaking of 'losing the thread' I remembered one more game I played in the last week: Commanders: Attack of the Genos. This Xbox Live Arcade title is one I'm preparing a review of, and I can already say that it's probably worth a look if you're a strategy fan. It's got some well-planned Achievements, like Survivor for making it through a mission without casualties, and some strange - but addicting - music.

Check out the demo for that one while you wait for the final word.

Lost Odyssey fantastic? Well, I guess that is your opinion. I guess you are one of the very few that would think it is fantastic. It is adequate at best, in my opinion (how can the Immortals get hurt? Really? Doesn't injuries on an immortal kind of defeat the purpose?)

I guess it is a bastardization of stories about Casca Rufio Longinus (wikipedia it if you don't know).

Posted By: David R. (Guest)  on February 28, 2008 at 03:22 AM

Yeah, I'm one of the few - along with all the reviewers - who think it's a really solid game. Immortals getting hurt? Whoever said immortals were invulnerable? The neat thing is that if you have an immortal 'die' in the course of battle, if it goes for another round they come back to life with a portion of their hitpoints.

Kind of a neat way to include the notion of immortality in the gameplay.

Still...is there really a reason to knock a game you've never tried? I guess you're one of the very few who think that makes sense.

Did I ever state I never played it? I understand you have different opinion; however, that doesn't mean I didn't play it. Acutally, I generally play the games for the story. It pains me to see the same convoluted garbage recycled over, and over again. MistWalker should try to innovate the most important aspect of a RPG (you know, the story). When they do that, you can get back to me.

I will bet you ten that (insert quality RPG here) on the PS3 will do much better than LO. You can take that one to the bank.

Posted By: David R. (Guest)  on February 28, 2008 at 05:51 AM

Which RPG - Final Fantasy? You really think that's not "convoluted garbage, recycled over and over" at this point?

And your gamertag shows you've never played Lost Odyssey. Take your uninformed bullshit somewhere else.

You have proof that I didn't play that game, son? Since broadband penetration is not 100%, your argument is laughable at best.

Did you ever think that I played the game at a friend's house? Did you think that I didn't borrow it because I have better games to play?

Are you saying LO is superior to, or even the same league as, Rogue Galaxy, Growlanser Generations, Final Fantasy Tactics War of Lions, Disgaea Afternoon of Darkness, Valkyrie Profile Lenneth, Tales of Eternia, Front Mission 3, Star Ocean The 2nd Story, Star Ocean Till the End of Time, Front Mission 4, La Pucelle Tactics, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom, Xenogears, Xenosaga 1, 2, 3, Digital Devil Saga 1, 2, or Dragon Quest 8...

I would compare it to Tales of Legendia, Wild Arms 3, Wild Arms 4, Radiata Stories, Suikoden IV. None of those games are impressive. However, I can understand your admiration for it. You were impressed by Halo 3.

JRPGs are my forte. I'm the equivalent of Carl Sagan. This is my turf. 60 RPGs say so...

"

Again, your gamertag - updated as of a day ago or so - shows you haven't played it. Sure, sure - you played it at a friend's house. Whatever you can come up with to cover your ass.

You still haven't said what mythical PS3 RPG it's not as good as...funny, since the PS3 has what...one JRPG out? Enchanted Arms.

White Knite Story, Disgaea 3, Valkyria Chronicles, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Vs. XIII, and some cross platform like Fallout 3, the next Shin Megami Tensei game, etc.

How well is the 360 doing in Japan? Were do the excellent Eastern RPGs come from? Now, do you honestly think you are going to see more in the year and a half the 360 has left?

Posted By: David R (Guest)  on February 28, 2008 at 11:23 PM

And your argument is based on the fact that I played at a friend's house? Can you stop projecting your reality onto me? I know for certain that 411mania allows people to review games they don't own nor rent. They allow people to review games for systems they have access to. Hell, how the hell do you think I reviewed Resistance Fall of Man?

And to the victor goes the spoils...

Posted By: David R. (Guest)  on February 29, 2008 at 02:55 AM

LOL - victor? You're not worth arguing with. Like I said, you got caught saying you'd played Lost Odyssey and now claim to play it at a friend's house. Believable - especially considering the source.

I thought when you stopped writing for 411 you actually meant any of the stuff you said about trying to get 'better' - obviously that was just more bullshit.

Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered)  on February 29, 2008 at 03:06 AM

Bullshit?

About suffering my injuries?

Yes! You figured me out! I made all that stuff up. Hell, would you mind talking to the John C. Lincoln North Mountain, Rehabilitation Specilist, and Rehab Without Wall? You can let them know I made up that injury.

Hell, I guess the PEG tube and tracheotomy were needless. Right?

Hell, I guess they'll listen to you and waive the quarter of a million dollars in medical bills I owe. Pfft...

I love arguing with Fanboys, such as yourself, because you help reinforce the superiority complex.

You also help to show how the US is so far behind in many different areas. We don't provide health care to everyone, George W. Bush is a moron and our commander and chief, we have christians that are anything but (I guess they forget the part that God is Love), and so on and so forth.

You fall into that same crowd. Unfortuanetly, you help validate the fear that we are pretty close to descending to level of mediocrity.

Take our health care system for example, it is a joke. People spend millions just to stay alive for a few more days. You know who really suffers? The people that need basic healthcare are pushed step over by selfish individuals that don't need to be kept alive to take more from our society.

However, back on topic, you don't know me, you never met me, and you are nothing to me. So, how the hell do you know anything about me? Really?

In your corner we we have one M$ fanboy...

In my corner, I have my family, my girlfriend, my coworkers, my HR, the medical staff, and my lawyer. Who do you think wins there?

What have you done to validate any of your arguments?

Are you going to keep crying over this little altercation caused by the fact that I don't have your opinion? Hell, you like twisting the facts as well.

All the reviewers think it is a solid game? Why is it 78%?

Some examples:
NZGamer 75.0%
GameSpot 75.0%
Worth Playing 75.0%
GameTap 70.0%
GamePro 65.0%
GameDaily 60.0%
G4 - X-Play 60.0%
GameSpy 50.0%

A really solid game? A 78% is solid? I guess that 50% is really solid, right?

Quit giving Bill Gates the O-face, it isn't becoming of you.

Posted By: David R. (Guest)  on February 29, 2008 at 04:21 AM

Peasant,

I don't take you as an intelligent man, because you haven't proven me wrong (came close at all), you haven't proved that my friend doesn't have the game, basically, you have done nothing but throw a hissy fit.

Posted By: David R. (Guest)  on February 29, 2008 at 04:25 AM

You're the one replying multiple times to one post, and going off into rambling diatribes that make no point while you brag about sticking it to me. I noticed you ignored all the 80+% reviews - including the 90% ones.

Wonder why that is? Oh right, you're an idiot who's not worth arguing with. Have a good day, being right about everything because you can't understand basic arguments against you.

Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered)  on February 29, 2008 at 05:14 AM

Actually, you stated: "Yeah, I'm one of the few - along with all the reviewers - who think it's a
really solid game."

I guess those reviews just proved your wrong. That was the point. You said that everyone thought it was a solid game. And I just did what I do best, I proved someone wrong.

Did I say that no one like the game? No, I did not. I said: "Lost Odyssey fantastic? Well, I guess that is your opinion. I guess you are
one of the very few that would think it is fantastic. It is adequate at best,
in my opinion."

Do you need me to define fantastic for you as well?

Seriously, you really need to get back on Midol. You are the one that acted like a child when I didn't agree with you.

In addition, you are a coward to boot. I guess I would high tail it out of here when my argument turned out to be a failure.

On a side note: I must be a sadist, because I like to crush an ill-prepared opponent. You make an adequate represenation of Karl Rove, and George W. Bush (two morons that would taste the back of my hand).

I'll say it again:

"To the victor goes the spoils"

Posted By: David R (Guest)  on March 01, 2008 at 02:51 AM

No one's the victor here, this argument is stupid.

Posted By: Daniel (Guest)  on March 02, 2008 at 08:46 PM

...Since when was a 78% not 'solid'?

Posted By: Jordan Williams (Registered)  on March 03, 2008 at 04:29 AM

another great column in a series thats quickly becoming one of my favourites. i also loved mass effect (although i kinda wish i hadn't played as a soldier the first time through). and along with orange box they probably have the best achievements of any game i've played. Lost Odyssey is great so far (only at end of disk 1) and its easily been the equal to many JRPGs that have come before on other consoles. In fact a few of the things it does are even better then those other JRPG's.

Posted By: Steve McHugh (Registered)  on March 03, 2008 at 05:18 AM

Oh wow, David R. Butthurt much? You know ranting and raving just because you got caught out in a lie doesn't make it any better.
