The Checkpoint 05.05.08: Top 10 Movie Based Games
Posted by John Curry on 05.05.2008

In the world of gaming there seems to be some mentality that when a movie is successful in the theaters that it should be transferred to the world of gaming. More times than not the games are horrible representations of the movie, often times bordering on downright embarrassing the film itself. Apparently someone needs to show the makers of these games exactly what a good movie based game looks like. What pissed me off enough to create this list, you might be asking yourself. My answer is simple. Play the Iron Man demo on the Xbox 360 and you will see what I mean. This week I decided to take a look at the Top Ten movie based games of all time….In my opinion.

10. The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge (Playstation 2): This is one of the only games I am embarrassed to put on this list but the fact of the matter is this is a great game all around that pays homage to the movie in ways that leave you begging for a sequel to the game and the movie. The graphics are stunning, the music is great and the story is delightfully dark much like the film. This is definitely a credit to the mind of Tim Burton.

9. Toy Story (Super Nintendo): The SNES version of Toy Story was one of the most important games for the genre of film based movies. The game was enjoyable, especially when it came to racing the RC car. The game maintained its tradition to the movie while still providing a decent level of interest in the game play. Regardless of how childish the game is there has still yet to be a Pixar game to rival this one.

8. Dick Tracy (Nintendo): No matter what anyone says this is where you begin to see the formation of the original Grand Theft Auto series. Often times the quality of this game is overlooked simply due to the hit or miss liking of the film. The game is actually a great game that in some ways outlives the film itself.

7. Lord of the Rings Return of the King (Playstation 2) : This game brought to life what the film presented. Hoards upon hoards of orcs and beasts coming at you while you try to build up your abilities all while staying true to the films. The castle siege is one of the greatest levels of the entire world of gaming.

6. GoldenEye 007 (Nintendo 64): Simply said this was the game that revolutionized the FPS that we still play today. This is one of the few reasons that I have kept my Nintendo 64 and still break it out every once in a while to play. Good story line, excellent variation of weapons mixed with an acceptable level of challenge makes this game one of the best movie adaptations of all time.

5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Arcade (Nintendo): As a diehard Ninja Turtles fan growing up I remember saving all my quarters to play this game at the arcade. I always played as Donatello, and remember the challenges of the footclan and the battles with Beebop and Rocksteady. This is one the games that again has held its own against time and will continue to hold its own as long as there are gamers who appreciate the style of gameplay. This is the only TMNT game worth buying or even playing.

4. Batman Returns (Super Nintendo): The graphics and soundtrack are just the beginning of this great game. The storyline, the fight style and the ability to stay true to the film makes this game the best Batman version to date. Here's hoping the Dark Knight will have a game half as good as this one.

3. Lego Star Wars the Trilogy (Xbox 360) : I have placed the complete saga version of the six Star Wars films as the episodic versions of the game are equally as good as the next. The graphics are crisp, the gameplay was enjoyable, and the lego rendition of the story is actually refreshing to play. I mean for the love of life who doesn't smile when they see Lego Yoda? The game is one of the best film based games to be created in years. If it wasn't for the quality of the Star Wars series would anyone be looking forward to the Lego Batman and the Lego Indiana Jones? I highly doubt it.

2. Reservoir Dogs (Playstation 2): This was a hit or miss game for many players. For me it was a hit. This is one of my all time favorite films and moreover one of the greatest films of all time. The game gave you the chance to play as any one of your favorite colors while adding intricate details the story that the film did not cover. If you haven't played this game yet go out and get yourself this game. You will not be sorry. How bad could it be, it was banned in Australia for excessive violence.

1. Aladdin (Sega Genesis): This is the pinnacle of what video games based on films should always strive to be. Aladdin has everything that makes for a great game. Good soundtrack, quality graphics, and enticing gameplay. Was it the most challenging game you have ever played, I doubt it, however this game was challenging enough to keep you playing when you were ten or eleven years old. This game also holds up really well over time.

I probably shouldn't respond since you have Aladdin as your #1 game which pretty much seals the deal of how bad this list is, but TMNT isn't based off a movie and uh there are 4 or 5 decent TMNT games.

My favorite movie game was Lion King for Genesis. TMNT isn't really a movie game as it was based on the TV show first. But since that is the case, it is the best TV show game! Children these days will never get to experience a real arcade.

I thought Aladdin was pretty good. But Goldeneye 007 definitely should be number 1.

Goldeneye lower than number 1? Expect a ton of irate responses.

Chronicles of Riddick for XBox is also glaringly absent.

Wade mentioned Chronicles of Riddick being absent, and I'm thinking that as well, Spider-Man 2 probably should've made the cut somewhere.

Agreed on the TMNT comments, as well. You might have had a case, except that even the picture you used includes Bebop and Rocksteady, who were never in any of the TMNT films.

I'm not gonna deny Aladdin as #1. That game was indeed awesome. Although I wish the original Batman for the NES would've appeared.

So glad you didn't put Goldeneye as number one. It was important for console FPSes, but I would not call it the best movie game of all time.

I also think you're mistaken about the turtles only having one good game. TMNT in the early days was a really good gaming franchise. If my memory serves me right, I only played one pre-32-bit era that I did not like.

My personal choice for number one would be Chronicles of Riddick...anyhow good list Curryman.

i guess its a matter of opinion, because i always thought goldeneye sucked. i definitely would have put the spiderman movie game somewhere on this list.

Alladin on Geneis is soooooo frigging overrated. Also, that's a screenshot of the SNES version. Just saying.

Posted By: Hawkeye (Guest)  on May 05, 2008 at 07:49 AM

The weird thing is he mentions the Sega Genesis version of Aladdin, but the screenshot is of the Super NES version.

I think one of the Super Star Wars games should have been on the list - preferably Super Empire Strikes Back. One of the Jurassic Park titles could have made the cut too.

Another omission is the amazing Terminator 2 arcade game. It's a quarter cruncher, but between the digitized graphics, sounds and the huge dual mounted guns it's a great game.

echoes sentiments about TMNT, but will let it slide since I love it. I will point another correction though, you mistakenly typed Alladin instead of THE WARRIORS!

Posted By: Les (Guest)  on May 05, 2008 at 09:44 AM

The Warriors should be on there somewhere. Highly underrated game.

Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay?

Posted By: Sam (Guest)  on May 05, 2008 at 02:00 PM

Aladin is good stuff.

Another of my favorites: Michael Jackson's Moonwalker.

Spiderman 2

Lion King was great.

Enter the Matrix, while not the best game ever, was pretty good, too.

Also, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Hmmmm...I think I'm compiling more of a nostalgia-based list, rather than movie-based.

I realize TMNT was from TV but I just love the damn game so much. I was not a big fan of the Chronicles of Riddick game and I had to take Enter the Matrix back to best buy 5 times because it went black at the helicopter scene everytime. I enjoyed the warriors but I just didn't think it was a top ten. If I had honorable mention I would have placed it there but honorable mention is just another term for not on this list.

GoldenEye for number 1!!!!!!!

Posted By: guest (Guest)  on May 05, 2008 at 04:20 PM

Point: "I realize TMNT was from TV but I just love the damn game so much."

Counterpoint: Fair enough, but your list was the "Top 10 Movie-Based Games." Not to be a jerk about it, but even if the list is your opinion, shouldn't it still stick to the format that YOU selected?

Well now im just pissed off... i demand... DEMAND that Goldeneye is #1 as it is clearly the best game from a movie.

Hell i still play it

Posted By: I mark for Goldeneye (Guest)  on May 05, 2008 at 07:05 PM

Actually a pretty good list. GoldenEye should be #1, but very good pick of Aladdin, I was hoping it would be on here. SNES version is a little better, methinks.

Posted By: MidnightMayor (Guest)  on May 05, 2008 at 09:23 PM

I've played both and while the Genesis version certainly looks better (a switch considering normally SNES games look better - I believe the team that would work on the well animated Earthworm Jim worked on Aladdin for Genesis), the SNES version plays better. Having Aladdin jumping on enemies is more in line with the movie - swinging a sword just wasn't his thing.

I won't bother listing a top 10, but a couple of my favorites are The Lion King, and The Matrix: Path of Neo

Posted By: Toddo (Guest)  on May 06, 2008 at 10:45 AM

Ninja Turtles doesn't count by your own criteria. And with possible exception of the NES one (which I kind of liked), there was never a bad 2D TMNT game to my knowledge, and Turtles in Time was outstanding.

I'd never even heard of the Dick Tracy game and never played Nightmare Before Christmas, so I can only trust your judgment on those.

The Warriors, The Lion King, and Spiderman 2, and the Chronicles of Riddick game are all better than Reservoir Dogs... and still very good outright, because being better than Reservoir Dogs doesn't mean all that much.

Glaring omissions aside, I think it's a pretty decent list. I mostly agree with the placing of everything else I didn't bitch about. :P
Goldeneye is most definitely not #1.

And it's you opinion anyway. It's not like it particularly matters what any of us thinks.

You left off a big one: The Warriors. It's not just that Rockstar so wonderfully recreated the look and feel of 1977 New York and a great brawling system. They also had the brilliant idea of putting in about twelve hours worth of missions BEFORE you get to the events of the film. They deepen the characters, making them truly relatable and with great voice acting to boot. It also has nice touches like the spraypaint markers and bonus missions showing how the characters joined the gang. Overall, a terrific experience that makes the movie even more terrific.
