The Checkpoint 06.02.08: Top 50 Games of All Time
Posted by John Curry on 06.02.2008
This week The Checkpoint’s John Curry unveils his top 50 favorite games of all time!
Recently, the staff of 411mania games got together to discus putting together our lists of top 50 games of all time. I present to you my top 50 games of all time, in my opinion. Don't forget to check back to see what the other staffers select as their top 50 games.
1. Maniac Mansion
Maniac Mansion was one of the greatest games to ever be put on a console of any kind. This was one of the first games I ever went back and played after beating it because it offered alternative endings based on how you played the game. This was a revolutionary game that garners almost no reception or appreciation today. If you can ever find a copy of this game pick it up I promise you that you will not regret it. Here's hoping someone out there reads this and sends me a copy of it for the original NES.
2. Halo 2
There is nothing to say about this game that has not already been said. This was the first time I ever felt that I was fully using the potential of my Xbox system While I enjoyed Halo 3, it was nowhere near as innovative or enjoyable as this one.
3. 1942
1942 is the greatest vertical shooter game in existence. As a kid I remember just playing this game for hour after hour. I have this game downloaded on my pc and still play it almost on a weekly basis. I am excited to see how the new sequel plays out on the Xbox 360.
4. Fatal Frame Series
This is the absolute greatest horror survival game in existence and as I have wrote about before I am pissed that it is not going to receive it's full glory on one of the next generation consoles. (And yes I have a Wii but would rather play it on the 360). I cannot pick between which game is better than each other as they are all equally enjoyable and again one of the greatest games ever made.
5. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
I actually stumbled across this game when a friend loaned it to me. 300 hours later I was in love with this series and sought out the previous titles. Great storyline, long gameplay and variety made this game the best game that has been released on a next generation console yet.
6. Mike Tyson's Punch Out
As a child there was no other game that could make me laugh and piss me off at the same time as Punch Out. I remember beating the game after owning it for years. The final fight with Mike Tyson still is one of the hardest final levels on any game.
7. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
This was one of the most innovative games for the "sports" genre. The game was fun, crisp and enjoyable. The soundtrack is still one of the best to ever show up in a game. It is too bad that this series has been watered down and milked for everything it is worth and has ultimately been replaced by Skate, but without this game there would be no Skate.
8. Kingdom Hearts
This was another game I stumbled upon simply by accident in the discount bin at the local game exchange location. The game surpassed all expectations I had. The combination of Disney characters and levels with the Final Fantasy styling just blew my mind. This was no simple game however and provided several different options to make it one of the best games to ever come out. Too bad the second one simplified the combat styling to make it less challenging.
9. Earthworm Jim
I am absolutely giddy to hear that there is another Earthworm Jim in production. The swinging of his head to rappel down through levels, this game is just one of the best games ever and in my opinion the best game to ever grace the Sega Genesis.
10. The Oregon Trail
Anyone who made it through school in the 1980's and 1990's remembers the Oregon Trail. This was my first introduction to video games on the PC. While the graphics may not have been the greatest, the storyline and enjoyment I remember having from this game was one of the best memories of my childhood.
11. Dr. Mario
Dr. Mario was the answer for the Tetris craze on the NES. Personally, I preferred Dr. Mario. The game just had something that kept you intrigued and challenged while playing it. I still break out my NES system to play it from time to time. An absolute gem.
12. Fallout
Many people are not familiar with Fallout for the PC. The game had everything. A nuclear holocaust, an RPG, the challenges, the storyline, everything. While many people will question this be an addition to this list, those who have played it will not. The sequel Fallout 3 from Bethesda, is the one game I am looking forward to the most this year. I cannot wait to see what Bethesda can bring to the next generation console after their success with Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.
13. GTA II
Yes you read that correctly, I have ranked the PS1 version of GTA II above San Andreas and Vice City. I loved the top down view and the necessity to balance who you attacked and which gang you felt most compelled to ally yourself with. This was the game that made me want to play all of the ones that would follow. Am I upset that the game has progressed to where it is now? Absolutely not. The GTA series is still enjoyable but I have to admit I am still a bigger fan of GTA II rather than the new series.
14. Battletoads
This game was one of the best graphically enhanced games to ever appear on the SNES. The gameplay was enjoyable and somewhat challenging but most importantly it was innovative.
15. BioShock
If I have to explain this one there are issues in your brain. The story, graphics, and gameplay. Enough said.
16. Aladdin
A lot of people were pissed that I had this as my number one game based on movies. I stand by it. This was the best movie based game and one of the best games ever.
17. - Resident Evil 4
This is the one game that has revived the series and actually has me wanting to play Resident Evil 5 when it comes out. I hardly think that one game is enough to continue milking a series, but the complete retooling of the series and gameplay has landed this game on my list.
18. Civilization Series
I group the entire series together here as the gameplay is almost the same thing but the series is one of the most enjoyable and mentally challenging games to ever be created. I own all of the Civilization games and play them nonstop.
19. Crackdown
While this game was not the most graphically advanced games ever, I have fallen in love with the constant desire to top out in this game and beat it 100% while unlocking all of the achievements. It is for this reason I believe this game deserves a spot on my list.
20. Dead Rising
Killing hordes of zombies with a wide array of weapons is all I need to say about this one.
21. Age of Empires Series
This is right there with the Civilization series. I enjoy this game almost as much as Civilization and believe the entire series deserves to be on this list.
22. F Zero
This was the greatest racing game to hit the Super Nintendo system ever. The game was beautifully done, challenging and enjoyable on every level.
23. God of War
One of the greatest games to ever hit the Playstation 2 system. I loved the graphics, storyline, and fight style this game brought to the system. I cannot wait for the sequels and the movie.
24. Guild Wars Series
I put this game above World of Warcraft for one reason. I don't have to pay to play online. Simple as that. The characters are great and the graphics are phenomenal if you have a computer that can handle it.
25. GTA: San Andreas
To me this is the best GTA of the new style GTA. Sure there were some kinks that needed to be worked out but as anyone who plays GTA can attest this is when the GTA series became a constant threat to the world of gaming.
26. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
I loved playing this game at the local Peter Piper Pizza down the street from one of the houses I grew up in. When I received it as a birthday present I was amazed how well it transitioned from the arcade to my living room. One of the best multiplayer games ever.
27. Return to Castle Wolfenstein
While not exactly the most graphically enhanced game to ever hit the PC this game along with Doom changed the way FPS games would be for years to come.
28. Katamari Damacy
One of the most unusual games to ever come out of Japan, this game provided an endless amount of "why do I play this game?" questions followed by "why can't I put this game down?" While Beautiful Katamari is enjoyable in itself, it does not compare to Katamari Damacy.
29. Gunsmoke
This scrolling shooter was one of the most challenging games to ever hit the Nintendo. I remember playing this game all the time and still not being able to beat it. I hope that someday I can find it again and finally beat it.
30. Elder Scrolls III: Morrowwind
While not as good as Oblivion, Morrowind was one of the greatest RPG games to ever come out and springboarded the RPG games for the Xbox system.
31. Hitman: Codename 47
This game was only available on the PC but in my opinion had the best storyline of any of the Hitman games to come. I enjoyed the 3rd person shooter that this game had and the different styles of killing your targets.
32. Super Mario Bros. 3
The best Mario game ever. I absolutely loved the different power-ups that were available to use including the Pwing.
33. Ikaruga
This is a relatively new game but the most challenging game to hit the Xbox Live Arcade so far. This scrolling shooter is unbelievably difficult but graphically phenomenal.
34. Uncharted Drake's PS3
The best game to hit the Playstation 3 in my opinion. This is the new Tomb Raider and I hope to see sequels abound with this series.
35. Viewtiful Joe
Innovative, challenging, and absolutely stunning graphics make this game a member of this list.
36. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
I have preached the praises of this game for years. There is no scene in a game that rivals the Tower Seige scene in my opinion.
37. Goldeneye 007
Yeah this is the one game I can see people will be complaining about being so low on the list. Yeah I loved the game. It revolutionized FPS forever but I do not think it deserves to be higher on MY list than this.
38. Reservoir Dogs
Often underappreciated this game is one of the best games to ever show the brutality of a film in all its glory. I am always game for Reservoir Dogs. The only think that would make me happier than this game is if Boondock Saints showed up on a next gen system.
39. ESPN NFL 2k5
To me this was the best football game to ever come out. That's right better than any Madden. Unfortunately ESPN lost its contract with the NFL and can no longer use current players.
40. Donkey Kong 64
One of the finest games to every hit the Nintendo 64. This game showed off what graphics can be without burdening the gameplay.
41. A Bugs Life
Damn was this game harder than I thought it would be. It was a graphic masterpiece that pissed me off by being harder than I thought it would be, especially the Dandelion scene.
42. Lion King
This was what Aladdin was to kids, Lion King was the challenging game for the older kids and adults complete with the soundtrack from the movie.
43. The Warriors
One of my favorite films of all time, the game brought information to the characters that the film couldn't. The reason this wasn't on my top ten movie based games of all time was because it was number 11. Plain and simple. I beat it too quickly to be happy enough to include it in the top ten.
44. Fight Night Round 3
The second greatest boxing game ever behind PunchOut. This game captured the life of a boxer and the challenges that occur in a fight, not to mention how great the graphics were.
45. Overlord
If you have not played this game this is one of the funniest and most enjoyable games ever. Pick it up.
46. Quake
This was one of the best games to ever come out but the sequels have been the same thing as this one just updated graphically. I cannot wait to play Enemy Territory though.
47. F.E.A.R.
This game creeped me out beyond belief but the game actually kept me intrigued and excited to see what was next. This was like combining Fatal Frame's scariness with a great FPS.
48. Crash Bandicoot Series
This series is one of the most challenging of all time. Unfortunately as time progresses for this series it becomes a milked out repetitive series. So far it has been an enjoyable series but I have a feeling the next game they make for this series will cause me to remove it off my list.
49. Super Mario Kart
This was one of the best racing games for all generations of game players. I love this game and am happy with the new Wii version as well. I think it will be considered one of the best games that will stand the test of time.
50. NBA Jam
Midway's greatest basketball game ever is still one of the most innovative sports games ever. I remember all of the special moves and dunks and shots ever. The only complaint I had was that it was too damn hard.
Pretty decent list...but Guild Wars? Its fun and all, but its basically WoW with less lasting appeal.
Also, glad to see that someone else thinks Crackdown is an amazing game, I don't think it gets enough credit.

Halo 2 in the number 2 spot is indicative of your excellent opinion on gaming. First, Halo 2 was a Xbox game (not a 360 game). Second, you completely invent a game, ESPN NFL 2K7. ESPN NFL 2K5 was the LAST NFL football game not named Madden. It was on the XBOX not the Xbox 360....
They did not make a Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtles for the SNES. You meant the NES. THEY DID MAKE Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtles 3 Turtles in Time or TMNT Tournament Fighters.
I hope you don't take offense, but I have to ask this question.....Do you really like video games? I mean...really? Your list was juvenile and Ikaruga did not appear on the 360 FIRST (it was a port). It appeared on the Gamecube first (it was released in the arcade first).
Do more research next time...I tore your list apart in a minute. Hell, you should use wikipedia next time...or something.

I didn't think it was possible...but your opinions on games are about as awful as your opinions on MMA.
Posted By: Pwnage (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 12:15 AM
You'll get some shit for this list, but it's not bad from where I sit. Everyone has different favorites. One complaint - it's more fun to read a list like this in descending order and build up to the #1, IMO.
Posted By: Satan (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 12:18 AM
David R,
Thank you for catching my errors. I am busy enjoying the effects of vicodin and a broken hand but I wanted to finish my article. And no I am not offended. I actually enjoy people questioning my choices. I understand Ikaruga is a ported system as I covered that in my review of Ikaruga for the XBLA but I put this one on this list because I absolutely loved the downloaded "sequel" for the XBLA. The point of this article as agreed on by the staff was OUR top 50 games not what we think our readers top 50 games are.
Posted By: John Curry (Registered) on June 02, 2008 at 12:34 AM
OK, I'm being pedantic. I'm sure that Ikaruga was originally written for a Naomi arcade board (which is effectively a Dreamcast). It had a Japan only Dreamcast release and a Gamecube version in other parts of the world.
Posted By: WadeMcG (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 12:41 AM
It's fairly safe to say that, as it appeared on the GameCube and Dreamcast, he's probably accurate to say that Ikaruga's XBLA debut is the first time most people have seen or heard of it.
Even Radiant Silvergun wasn't widely known outside of the shmup crowd after hitting here only on the Saturn.

I must be the only person that thinks that Oblivion is as boring as all hell. And that's coming from someone who adores RPGs.
Posted By: Robbie Brooksbank (Registered) on June 02, 2008 at 03:46 AM
Another correction:
Return to Castle Wolfenstein was the sequel released in 2001 based on the Quake 3 engine, the game that was the precursor to Doom and led the way to FPS'es as we know it was 'Wolfenstein 3D'
Posted By: Franko (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 08:45 AM
You're not Robbie, Oblivion is something I get prescribed for insomnia.
Posted By: Sean McCabe (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 09:12 AM
No Legend of Zelda!
You sir are an idiot.
Posted By: LOZ (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 09:26 AM
I'm guessing you never actually owned an NES or SNES.
Posted By: Mike Ray (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 10:20 AM
John,
Your reason reminds me of an Atreyu song (Five Vicodin Chased with a Shot of Clarity). I understand your desire to get your article out on time, and I respect that. And one more note, Oblivion was a PC port to the 360 (it didn't appear there first).
Rod,
That doesn't excuse the error OR make him right. It is still an error. You want to argue semantics?
Robbie,
Oblivion is a WRPG. WRPGs are directly related to D&D. Therefore, there is less an importance on the story. The point of the game is character creation (try Daggerfall or Arena).
Japanese RPGs focuses on the story. You have control on how powerful your character becomes, but you don't have control on his appearance. I would suggest picking up Shin Megami Tensei Persona 3 FES. It just came out, and it is $29.99 for the PS2. You can also pick up Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne. Atlus released more copies of the game...it should be relatively cheap if you go to Gamestop or order online. Dante from DMC makes a guest appearance.
Posted By: David R. (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 10:25 AM
Besides RE4, which should have been higher, this list was the worst best of list I've yet to read.
Posted By: Jonas (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 12:06 PM
Where's MGS?
Posted By: Jason (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 12:08 PM
My top four would be devoted to the Metal Gear Solid series. 1) Metal Gear Solid 2) Metal Gear Solid 2 & Substance (and I would go into great detail. 3) Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops 4) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater/Subsistance.
The reason would be well thought out. Metal Gear Solid brought hollywood style production/storytelling to gamers (plus it was fun to boot). Metal Gear Solid 2 was a worthy sequal that introduced a new character and the story was a worthy successor to the original. Portable Ops brought Metal Gear-type gaming to the PSP. It also introduced creating (usign Wi-Fi Hotspots) and caputring new soldiers (in-game). Metal Gear Solid 3 brought a more Rambo-type feel to the game; however, the story-telling wasn't quite up to the same level. The Cobra Unit was never really explored (outside of The Joy).
About Zelda, I would include A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time. I would not include the original because the others were...just...better. That would be the flow of my list...
Posted By: David R (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 12:44 PM
With Sega, did you mean the Genesis, the Master System, the Nomad, the 32X...what did you mean? I infer that you meant Genesis. Sega was the manufacturer, it was NOT the name of the system.
Posted By: David R. (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 12:46 PM
Shouldn't this list be going from 50 to 1? I mean I really could care less about the rest of the 49 games when #1 is the first thing I see
Posted By: natedoggcata (Registered) on June 02, 2008 at 01:05 PM
This is one of the worst lists I have ever laid eyes on. It is dreadfully aweful. You are clearly a 360 fanboy. There is no Metal Gear Solid, Half-Life, or anything on there. This must be a joke.
Posted By: Bill (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 01:14 PM
lol halo, what a rubbish game lmao
Posted By: gest30000 (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 01:14 PM
You're missing a lot of crucial titles. No Half Life 2? Metal Gear? Gran Turismo? Chrono Trigger? Gunstar Heroes?
Looks like you love your 360 but missed quite a few titles on other platforms.
Posted By: guest (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 01:43 PM
Wow, youre list is definately unique, but hey, I can appreciate that. I know for a fact that my Top 50 would be pretty different too. So yeah, any nerd asses that give you flak about your list, no one cares about them. Ha, it was kind of refreshing to read a list that wasnt full of all the "usuals."
Posted By: daniel (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 01:45 PM
Oblivion ahead of Fallout? Really? That's a strange decision, and that's putting it mildly.
Posted By: il-cattivo (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 02:17 PM
to David R
firstly being rude isn't the best way to get noticed. But also if you want to do fact checking then Ikaruga was released on the dreamcast first (after an arcade version).
TMNT 3 was in fact not turtles in time but was Radical rescue for the gba. the snes version of turtles in time had no number.
before you correct people you should check your own facts.
as for the list well there's a bunch i wouldn't have added but i don't know how long you've been playing games. if its been since 1990 then i'm surprised there arn't more genesis/snes games in there.

Ive never seen such negativity towards someone else opinion, oh wait I forgot this is the internet where anonymity and stupidity reign supreme.
Posted By: DaddyBojangles (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 02:24 PM
Just because the games you like arent on this list doesnt make it the worst list of all time. The people who've said that should put a list up and then have other people turn around and say their list is shit. Everyone is entitled to like any game they want. It's the right to choose and freedom of choice.
MGS isnt there? Who gives a flying fuck. I love the MGS games but alot of people don't and its their choice to like them or not. Some of the people on this site remind me of mini Hitlers who trash anything that they dont agree with and expect the world to bend to what they think is good, right or cool. People like that really piss me off and if you think you can do better, fuck off and start your own web site where you can post your own lists and have your friends come and say how wonderful you are, how right you are and where you can ban the people who don't agree with you.
I liked this list. It was DIFFERENT, which is something so many people hate these days, and included alot of great games other people wouldnt include.
Posted By: FDuk200k (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 02:35 PM
Here are some games you obviously haven't played. Mario Galaxy and Mario 64. Legend of zelda ocarina of time. Metal Gear solid. Gran Turismo 2. FF7, FF8 or x for that matter.HALF LIFE! Star Craft, Counter Strike, Contra, Crono Trigger, Tekken 3. Panzer Dragoon the only reason to own a sega saturn they made a new one for the xbox so you can play it on your 360 and get a feel for the original . Soul Caliber , Legacy of Kain : Soul Reaver, MDK, Silent Hill, Vagrant Story. Shenmue!!! ICO. There are a lot I have missed and there is a lot that you have missed out on.
So go play those and we'll see you remake that list of yours.
Welcome to gaming.

I don't know why people have a basic inability to READ when they're on the INTERNET...but if you look, it's **HIS** list of **HIS** favourite games. If you don't like them then pull your panties out of your asscrack, man up a bit and make your own list of YOUR favourite games.
Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered) on June 02, 2008 at 03:40 PM
I stand corrected. However, I'm a reader...NOT a writer. Shouldn't we hold the writers at a higher level than ourselves? I mean an editor is supposed to catch that, right?
Posted By: David R. (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 03:43 PM
Yikes! I'm glad this is your personal favorites and not a comprehensive list; many glaring omissions are listed in above comments. Just a thought, you might want to use the word “My” in prominent lettering in your title next time to avoid said troll-fest. Just FYI.
Posted By: Nate (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 04:20 PM
Both of us meant TMNT IV: Turtles in Time. I was overzealous with three...I knew that was wrong. Oh well...impulse control.
Posted By: David R. (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 05:26 PM
lol internet
Posted By: natedoggcata (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 05:53 PM
"I present to you my top 50 games of all time, in my opinion."
I don't know how it gets any more clear than that. The writers aren't responsible for readers who can't be bothered to read.
Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered) on June 02, 2008 at 06:00 PM
What a XBox 360 fanboy. 8 XBox 360 games on the all time top 50? What a joke. Have you ever heard about Tetris? Donkey Kong? Golden Axe? It's obvious you aren't much of a gamer...
Posted By: Limanima (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 06:16 PM
Well, I guess that is a good thing I didn't fall into that trap, right? I only corrected some of his mistakes (one was off by one number...a three instead of a four). However, I stated that was constructive criticism...not destructive. That is some what of a foreign concept to you....Isn't it, Rod (the person that claims to be an editor)?
Posted By: David R. (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 06:29 PM
Games are super serious business, Mr. Curry, and because you're opinion isn't the same as mine, you are an IDIOT!
Posted By: Robbie Brooksbank (Registered) on June 02, 2008 at 07:44 PM
"However, I stated that was constructive criticism...not destructive."
That's what you call this?
"...I have to ask this question.....Do you
really like video games? I mean...really? Your list was juvenile..."
That's "constructive" at all? Really?
Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered) on June 02, 2008 at 08:05 PM
Uh-huh
What would be the first thoughts that would go through your head when you saw a similar list? You would question the person's commitment to said medium. It was a valid question, and it received a valid response (him being on pain killers and wanting to put out his article). Therefore, thank you for quoting me, but you fail to illustrate how I wasn't providing constructive critism. I did not resort to attacks, I only questioned his expertise in type of entertainment.
Posted By: David R. (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 08:53 PM
Intersting list. The original Legend of Zelda is a glaring omission. That game was awesome in its time and paved the way for all lengthy adventure/puzzle games. Resident Evil 3 deserves a spot, Tomb Raider Legend, Ninja Gaiden Sigma (or whatever the original was on XBox), Super Mario Bros. 2, WWF Attitude (PS1), Sould Calibur 2, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, T2 arcade game, Medievil (PS1), GTA Vice City (WAY better than San Andreas to me), Super Ghouls n' Ghosts (SNES), the first 4 Sonic games (Genesis). Doom should be there for introducing a genre that's still the best selling today.
Posted By: Shockmaster (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 09:21 PM
"Your list was juvenile..."
Again...that's constructive? Looks more like an attack on his opinion.
I'd love to hear you rationally, without resorting to your typical "Bush is a demon" and "people are idiots" rhetoric, explain how someone's PERSONAL list of THEIR favourite games could be wrong in some way.
That's not 'valid' criticism. Correcting his mistakes on the background info - that's valid criticism. Try to learn the difference before you spout off about it lol
Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered) on June 02, 2008 at 09:27 PM
Please, please, please...take classes on reading comprehension. You are severly lacking in this area. I don't know if you're allowing your emotions to control you, or you like looking like an moron (or an ox moron...if this was Renaissance Man).
Posted By: David R (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 09:53 PM
I did not discredit his list...or the choices he made. I did say that there were errors in his list. That made the list come off as being juvenile. Now, you see MY reason...and YOUR error in the entire conversation (if you re-read my comments...instead of cherry-picking comments and pulling them out of context).
Posted By: David R (Guest) on June 02, 2008 at 09:59 PM
LOL - Dave, you become more of a joke every time you post your inane shit on the comments.
Every time someone pins you down to EXPLAIN YOUR SHIT, you just try to change things up again. Get over yourself already.
Emotions? You think I really care about your ridiculous rambling? This is all the writing you do now.
But you keep reading, Dave. You keep reading.
Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered) on June 02, 2008 at 10:02 PM
David R,
I appreciate your comments as I do everyone's comments. However I don't see your logic in chastizing MY favorite games simply because they are not YOUR favorite games. Everyone has their opinion and quite frankly just because my list does not adhere to your thespian standards does not mean that I am any less of a bard than you.
Posted By: John Curry (Registered) on June 02, 2008 at 10:10 PM
Ok...I'm going to break this down into a very easy-to-follow method.
1) I did not disagree with your list.
2) I did not attack your list.
3) The corrections I made were just that...corrections.
4) The only thing I mentioned about a list...was my own. That was that.
5) Please, please, please don't listen to Rod. He has no idea what he is talking about. AGAIN. He is cherry picking my comments to state I was attacking you.
I stated that the list was juvenile because of the errors? Did I state that YOUR choices were wrong?
Rod-Show him where I said...exactly that his choices were wrong? Where? Are you manufacturing a reason? Did I say that the list was inferior because of the choices...or the errors that I llustrated?
Didn't I state that I picked the list apart in a minute? Picked it apart...what does that mean...oh yeah. Breaking the list down and showing the errors. Wow! Yeah! That was an attack.

I don't know what your is up yoru butts, but I don't see ANY part where that poster is attacking your article, John. That Rod guy is coming off as a total douche. I mean, he is trying to twist his words around. It is sad that you are starting to believe Rod's view on reality. I don't know what is Rod's problem. He likes coming off as an @$$. Maybe his girlfriend or boyfriend left him. I don't know. He just seems to have this boner everytime he tries to pick a fight. He has to make stuff up.
Dude-maybe he has a crush on you or something. I don't know. It just seems that way.

"Did I say that the list was inferior because of the choices...or the errors that I llustrated?"
You doubted his passion for GAMING entirely lol
Did you create a new guest login to agree with yourself, Dave?

For the record, the majority of what I said about people not understanding when he said it was HIS list of HIS favourite games was directed at the other people who were taking clear shots at his list.
But you go on thinking you're the only guy who matters, Dave.
And keep reading. Nothing will show us all how 'bad' we really are like more hits, right?
Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered) on June 02, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Actually...Rod...you lumped me into that same group. You quoted me (out of context) to argue your point. Therefore, you can back up and be the coward all you want...but you excuse lacked a transition. You start out attacking me and then you switch to the other people? Now, am I supposed to guess that you are referring to other people? Hmmm...or did you just leave that part out?
"looks like an attack on his opinion"
"yadda yadda yadda Bush yadda yadda yadda'
Now you are going to back pedal out of this? Be a man and own up to your mistake. Jesus! Now, you are trying to weasel your way out of it, and say that I was attacking his list.
You stated that my corrections were constructive; yet, you take the word juvenile out of context. God, man up next time. I hate having to punk you out...so effortlessly and so easily. Hell, if you call me on a mistake...I'll own up to it. However, when you act like this, and try to twist my words around. It just makes you look like a fool. Dems da breaks, my friend.

"I don't know why people have a basic inability to READ when they're on the INTERNET...but if you look, it's **HIS** list of **HIS** favourite games. If
you don't like them then pull your panties out of your asscrack, man up a bit and make your own list of YOUR favourite games."
""I present to you my top 50 games of all time, in my opinion."
I don't know how it gets any more clear than that. The writers aren't
responsible for readers who can't be bothered to read."
I don't see where I referenced you AT ALL in either of those David. And I didn't take your comment about the list being "juvenile" out of context at all. The only thing I left off was your inane "I hope you don't take offense" line that you use every time you plan to say something idiotic.
Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered) on June 02, 2008 at 11:50 PM
Rod,
Honestly, you started another argument. You quoted me...out of context. When you were attacking the other readers...I didn't say anything. When I said that I provide constructive critism...THEN you wanted to start an argument. You need to leave well enough alone. Okay? That is when it became an argument between you, me, and the readers.
I was minding my own business (30+ posts) until you aimed your sites on me. Did you get tired of picking apart the readers corrections? Did you have to focus on me? Hmmm? Well? From that point on...you did not differentiate between myself and the others. That was your flaw, your failing. Now, you can say that you were referring to other people...but when there is more than one group, you need to transition from one to another. THAT is why the misunderstanding occured.
I'll man up and apologize for taking negatively, but history has taught me to treat you a certain way. Now, if you can apologize for your error...then we can it at that.
What do you say?
Posted By: David R. (Guest) on June 03, 2008 at 12:17 AM
My first reply was pointing out that the majority of gamers wouldn't know a thing about Ikaruga, not that he said it appeared first on the 360 in any case.
My second clearly is aimed at the people who were freaking out over THE LIST not being 'right' - that seems pretty clear.
You keep saying I took your quote out of context, though it appears you don't know what "out of context" means. The only thing I removed was your inane "don't take offense" disclaimer - your typical line before you attack someone's opinion.
Don't take offense, Dave, but I don't see how the 'misunderstanding' was mine at all. You were the first to decide you wanted to take offense to the column, then to my admonishments to people who were trying to say he was wrong about a list of HIS favourite games.
And like always, you extend the olive branch with one hand while trying to take a slap with the other. Seriously, the split personality "I'm sorry/You're still wrong!" thing is really getting old.
Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered) on June 03, 2008 at 12:31 AM
If that is what you are feeling, I am sorry for the misunderstanding.
Posted By: David R (Guest) on June 03, 2008 at 12:43 AM
Some good choices and classics. Bit more clarification of exactly which games and platforms would be helpful, especially the film tie-ins. No Baldur's Gate? And Oblivion, really, calling it a McDonald's version of fantasy would be a compliment, with beasts so lame it looks like 4 year olds designed them... hang on Goldeneye revolutionised FPS? I'm giving up now, you're beyond my help.
Posted By: Guest#6755 (Guest) on June 03, 2008 at 06:49 AM
John, where did you get that Halo 2 boxart with the Xbox 360 logo?
David R: You did in fact set out to tear the list apart, and then even bragged about how you did it so quickly, and I quote: "I tore your list apart in a minute. Hell, you
should use wikipedia next time...or something."
Hell you even commented on someone asking if anybody else thought Oblivion was boring. I thought it was boring, and I don't care if it is a WRPG, a JRPG, a WNBARPG or any other kind of RPG, I still find it boring. Your comment about it being a character builder and not so much story driven is irrelevant. Maybe it is the fact that Robie does not like to ride a horse or walk for 150 miles to get to his next objective. You assume he doesn't like it because it is character driven. That's pretty arrogant just to assume you know why he doesn't like it and offer your two cents, based on your assumptions. If you wanted to respond to that just say "No, it's not boring", or "Yes, it is boring". That is all he asked. You even said that WRPG's are directly related to D&D. I wonder how the developers of the Elder Scrolls series would think of you saying their game is connected to any D&D story.
And why the hell should we hold writers at a higher level than ourselves? Just because these guys write a column, does not make them better than any of us, nor does it validate their opinions more-so than any of ours. The words of a writer are still just that... HIS WORDS! I read them for entertainment, not because his opinion has so much more value than mine.
I will give it to ya that some stuff should be caught by an editor, in the traditional sense. However I think of the editor on sites like this as more mediators than anything, make sure the site runs, and does so smoothly.
But I do find it funny that you attack the editor of a site that will not let your hack ass write for them.. They must be doing something right.
And to question the expertise of a writer in an OPINION column is completely ridiculous. I am in no way shape or form an expert on any subject, but that doesnt mean that I am not allowed an opinion on the subject...
Further more, assclown, incorrect backround information does not make a list of JOHN CURRY's favorite games juvenile. All it means is his backround info was off.
You can spout off all you want. But whatever your reason for calling the list juvenile, whether it be for the mistakes in background info, or the list itself, calling it juvenile is still an attack. You are an idiot, but just based on your posts. There, now because I said it was based on your posts, you can't get mad, and it wasn't an attack. Oh, I left out the "I hope you don't take offense to this"
GET A LIFE!!

Interesting list John. David R, back in the day, you either owned a Sega, or you owned a Nintendo, there was no Genesis or SNES needed to show which system you were talking about, so I knew what John was saying there. I'm not going to make a top 50, because it would take forever, but I will give a couple of my favorites that weren't listed and give you an urging to try them out if anyone hasn't already.
Indigo Prophecy-(now available on XBL originals.)
Advent Rising-(The game had its problems, but as with Indigo Prophecy, the story is incredible.
Psi-Ops - This game was just plain ass fun for my money. From throwing a flaming barrel at an unsuspecting group, to sneaking up and making a guys head pop off, this game was fun for me.
If you haven't tried them, I would recommend doing so. Indigio Prophecy has the most unique controls I've ever run across, but it works, also a great storyline in this game, that makes it worth playing through even if you do not like the controls.
A great list is one that generates controversy, looks like from the words below you have managed to do that. Keep up the great work you do for the site.
Posted By: Toddo (Guest) on June 03, 2008 at 02:16 PM
Good call on Psi-Ops, I loved that one. You had so much freedom within the confines of the environments, and the controls for the powers were really well done.
Never played Indigo Prophecy, just skipped it I guess.
Advent Rising I quit after an hour or two after hitting endless bugs. Elevators that wouldn't work, cutscenes that didn't advance, etc...
Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered) on June 03, 2008 at 03:41 PM
Toddo,
I never played IP. However, I played Advent Rising. I felt that game need lots of work. It is kind of sad that they never completed the triology. Poor Orson Scott Card, you still get my love for the Ender series (not so much for the Bean series).
About Psi-Ops, that is a pretty fun game. I enjoyed the hell out of it. :-D The use of the different powers was pretty entertaining.
About Sega or Nintendo...or whatever. I was just nitpicking because he was referring to some systems by their proper name, and then he switched up to Sega (I was never one to refer to a system by the manufacturer). *shrugs*
It was just nitpicking. I mean, I was correcting some stuff (more than one item), why just leave it their. Don't want to pull out (so to speak). I have to **** it all the way. JK

I'm sorry but no Knights of the Old Republic automatically invalidates the whole list.
Posted By: Michael Weyer (Registered) on June 03, 2008 at 04:31 PM
Advent Rising, was full of bugs. And it was really to bad that it was like that, because the story was awesome. I too, was bummed when the rest of the trilogy was canned.
Also to Rod and to David, Indigo Prophecy is worth a look on the XBL originals. It is one of the most original titles I have ever played. I stated earlier that the control scheme was a bit odd, but in a good way. I have never felt more like my actions on the controller had a bearing on what happens to the character on screen. I can't possibly recommend the game enough.
Posted By: Toddo (Guest) on June 03, 2008 at 04:56 PM
Toddo,
I really, really want to pick it up. I'm thinking I'm going to get a copy...but a copy for Xbox. I don't want to fill up my 20 gigabyte HDD. I also like to own the original copies...I'll really look into picking up. I'll shop around. Thanks for the advice. :-D
Posted By: David R (Guest) on June 03, 2008 at 06:14 PM
I'm sure you can pick up a hard copy for about the same price as the XBL download.
Posted By: Toddo (Guest) on June 04, 2008 at 12:34 PM
"Oblivion is a WRPG. WRPGs are directly related to D&D. Therefore, there
is less an importance on the story. The point of the game is character
creation (try Daggerfall or Arena)."
David R., I think you have played the wrong D&D games. The standard pen & paper version is all about story if you have a good DM. For PC Baldurs Gate was full of story. It was as open ended as Elder Scrolls but most people never completed every quest.
John,
Lion King, Seriously? I never thought I would see someone pick that as a top anything. That level with the Purple Gorilla would drive me nucking futs.
The real question is how many games did you think of after you made the list?
Posted By: JediHoplo (Guest) on June 04, 2008 at 06:54 PM
Now that, Jedi, is an excellent questions. I'd love to see a follow up column with the ones you thought about after posting the list.
Posted By: TODDO (Guest) on June 05, 2008 at 01:34 PM
You are a true gammer, I like a lot of games on that list. P.S I have a copy of maniac mansion if you need one
Posted By: James (Guest) on June 05, 2008 at 04:48 PM
James where'd you get the copy of Maniac Mansion? I NEEEEEEEEEEEEEED IT!
Posted By: John Curry (Registered) on June 06, 2008 at 12:08 AM
Jedi....good question. I tell you what next weeks Checkpoint I will include the games that I thought of after the list that I wanted to put on the list.
Posted By: John Curry (Registered) on June 06, 2008 at 12:10 AM
Wasteland!!!! One of the best RPG's ever! Starcraft would be in my top 50 too. Then there's Tetris too.
Posted By: Roy (Guest) on June 07, 2008 at 06:31 PM
On most of you captions, you said how much more important it was for a game to have a good enjoyable storyline than to be advanced. But you labeled Oblivion way higher on the list than morrowind. This is completely retarded because if you actually play the games you know that morrowind was in every aspect better done than oblivion, it just didnt have horses or the advanced grafics. The world of morrowind in much, much larger despite what people tell you, has more NPCs, more quests, more creative environments, better spells, better enchanting system, if you get the right texture pack the water and sky actually look more realistic than oblivion, way more monsters to fight, they took away about half the weapons when they made oblivion, in morrowind you could fly and teleport but you cant in oblivion, and you had a lot more armour choices in marrowind, they looked better too. Basically compaired to marrowind, oblivion is way overrated. If you actually play the games, you can't honestly say oblivion way better, because marrowind was far better done they took a lot more away when the made oblivion than they put in to it which is really a step backwards and isn't really the purpose of sequals, despite the ffact that that is how they usually turn out. As for the rest of you list, it looks like you just grabbed a bunch of mediocre games, some overrated games, and a couple of good games and threw them all together in a random list.
Posted By: Mike Hays (Guest) on June 11, 2008 at 11:54 AM
Wow, this list is trash, no zelda games? Mostly old crap no one has ever heard of. HALO 2 IN #2? LOLOL Seriously man, do you even play games?
