The Red Snifit 06.17.08: 10 Favorite Games
Posted by Chris Scott on 06.17.2008
With almost everyone else listing their favorite during the recent past, 411mania's Chris Scott proves his lack of good timing by listing his 10 favorite games of all time. Why only 10? Who knows! Plus, he takes all of his snifiteers into the new and exciting (well, sort of) world known as The VC WiWare General Store!
Welcome to another edition of The Red Snifit. I am you host; complete with a mild case of the flu, Chris Scott. Today, seeing how I'm not exactly in a creative mind set, I'll be participating in a column style that has been done several times in recent weeks here at 411mania.com. Hopefully Curryman and International Superpimp Derek Robbins don't send hitmen out on me for it (I doubt they would, because of how cool they are!). So, without Freddy Adu, let's move on to………….
Our Feature Presentation: MY 10 FAVORITE GAMES OF ALL TIME
Before I start listing off games that I hold near and dear to me, I'd like to point out that this list is solely based on my opinion and mine alone. You will disagree with some (if not most) of my list, and that's ok. We all have out preferences, that that's what makes these lists entertaining. With that being said, here we go!
1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) - This game will always be #1 in my book not just of how awesome the story, and gameplay, and everything else about this game was; but because of the team effort that my sister and I put forth to progress throughout the game. This game united us, and although I suck at it, it still represents my childhood.
2. Tetris (Game Boy) - As I said last week, I declare Tetris to be the most perfect game ever made. Although it's been ported onto every system ever made, it's the Game Boy version with the pea soup screen that brings me back again……and again…..and again.
3. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - Take the awesomeness of Super Mario Bros. and multiply it by ten, and you have my thoughts on Super Mario Bros. 3. I just wish every Mario game had the tanooki suit, don't you?
4. Smash TV (Arcade) - Even though it's basically Robotron 2084 all over again, it added a futuristic game show feel and witty banter by it's host. Simple run-and gun blast away action done at a mind numbing pace. I'd buy that for a dollar!
5. Ninja Gaiden (NES) - For it's time, Ninja Gaiden was revolutionary because it's move-like cut scenes. Nearly 2 decades later, it's well known for it's high level of difficulty and addictive gameplay. Just 1 question; how can a bird to more damage that a bullet?
6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) - Although I thing A Link to the Past was better, Ocarina of Time showed what the future of the Zelda franchise become and offered the deepest story to any game in the franchise when it came out.
7. Galaga ‘90 (TG-16) - Galaga ‘90 took the classic gameplay of Galaga and injected it with performance enhancing goodness. The enemies were tougher, you could connect 3 ships together instead of just 2, and there were boss battles! Add in Galactic Dancing (bonus level) and vertical scrolling levels and you make Chris a very happy man.
8. Super Mario Galaxy (Wi) - I know most of you think it's asinine that I would put this game about Super Mario 64, but it's my list, damn it! Super Mario Galaxy has done the best job in it's franchise so far when it comes to storytelling. Add in the great controls and The Toad Brigade (I hope they get their own spin-off franchise) and you have the best game on the Wii thus far.
9. Pokemon Red/Blue (Game Boy) - Either you love Pokemon or hate Pokemon. As for me, I was just at the right age when Pokemania was running wild, and this game was EPIC! Even though newer versions have come out, it's basically the same deal as we were presented with the original versions. And yes, Gary was, is, and always will be a douche!
10. Crazy Taxi (Dreamcast) - It's short, it's unrealistic, but boy is it fun! Racing against the clock to service as many pedestrians as possible with while breaking every rule of the road is just so addicting. Also, unlike some people, a rather enjoy the musical styling of Offspring and think the music and the game fit each other rather well.
Well, there's my list. Please don't hurt me!
In combining the VC Corral and WiiWare ranch, it is my honor to introduce for your reading pleasure……..

Virtual Console
SAMURAI SHODOWN (NEOGEO 900 Points):
This first entry in the extremely popular and revolutionary fighting-game series was released in 1993. Choose from 12 swordsmen with highly individualistic characteristics and fight furiously, ultimately confronting the evil Amakusa Shiro Tokisada. Each character wields his or her own specific weapon, but you must be careful not to lose it during the heat of battle. Some of the fighters also bring an animal companion into the fray, offering a unique aspect to the quick-paced action. Another significant feature of the game is the anger gauge, which indicates the level of anger felt by each of the combatants as they suffer repeated injuries. If the anger reaches its maximum level, the attacking ability of the character increases, leading to even more intense confrontations. Through it all, the refined camera system smoothly zooms in and out of the playing field, presenting the frenzy of the battle while showcasing the lively background (watch as the referee scores hits). Awaken the samurai spirit within and get ready for a new kind of fight.
I must say, I'm not exactly thrilled about the WiiWare releases we've seen in recent weeks. This week we get a Breakout/Arkanoid clone and a fishing game. I'll give credit to Cocoto Fishing Master; it looks different and seems like a good buy for the youngins who are into fishing, but it's still fishing and just don't find it appealing. As for Brock Breaker Deluxe, it's the same deal as I said about the Blackjack and TV Show King games; why buy it on the Wii when the internet offers it for free?
As for Samurai Showdown, I recommend picking it up if you're into 2D fighters. It's slower than most, but it has it's charm. The zooming camera gets a little getting used to, but the music fit's the game perfectly and it's fun,
That will end this week's episode of The Red Snifit. I'm Chris Scott, and boy does my head hurt!
