B3yond the Report 07.01.08
Posted by Mark Salmela on 07.01.2008

Greetings friends! It's yours truly, the host of this Sony catastrophe, Mark Salmela. I've had a pretty busy week, especially now that I have a new laptop. So hopefully the column doesn't come off as rushed, but I've had a busy week and we haven't even hit the E3 rush yet. I haven't exactly planned what I'm going to do for E3, but I've proposed taking on the 360 and Wii writers in a 3 way fact or fiction. I may also do a special feature detailing the Sony E3 press conference *since their conference is like the day after next Tuesday's column*, but nothing is set in stone as of this point. In last weeks edition of B3yond the Report *which can be found here*, I made my predictions as to what I think Sony will unveil at E3 this year. If you didn't catch that be sure to go back and read up. By the way I did manage to forget two games, as both Buzz PS3 and Fl0wer should be at E3. That really just shows how many games Sony has in development right now, because I listed a ton of games last week. Any who that was last week, time to get to this week. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the last week before the video game industry explodes. Now, here's what I do best…

Appearing at E3 in spirit, it's B3yond the News of the Week~!

Sony has lost $3.2 billion on PS3, making it back new top priority

I'll start off with the bad news this week. In Sony's recent fiscal 2008 annual report, Sony announced that so far they have lost $3.2 billion on the PS3. Howard Stringer, the chairman of Sony, announced that making up the losses in their game and television industry will be their top priority. Video games and TV's are two of Sony's top money makers, so it should seem rather obvious that they would try to make those a priority. While many were quick to call the death of the PS3 claiming that there's no way they could make the $3.2 billion back in hardware sales, I'm surprised at how many major news outlets failed to mention that Sony had already knew that this would happen. If I'm not mistaken the PS2 had the same type of initial loses, and it was through their software sales that they made the PS2 extremely profitable.

So while it may seem that Sony has an impossible debt to recover on the PS3, realize that it's not as big of a debt as it may seem *although $3.2 billion is nothing to sneeze at*. Sony is one of the largest video game publishers around, and they make a pretty penny off of making those titles. As long as Sony can keep pumping out triple A blockbusters such as the God of War games than Sony should be able to make most of that money back. Not to mention that hardware costs are on the decline for the PS3 and it'll be a tough battle for Sony, but they still have the chance to make the PS3 a very profitable platform. They did it with the PS2 after all.

New document from Sony reveals interesting information

A document was released this past week from a Sony corporate meeting that had some interesting details. First off Sony is looking into some new "cost cutting" measure that could mean a cheaper PS3. With rumors of Toshiba already planning a 45nm RSX chip for the PS3 I guarantee price cut rumors are about to go crazy in the upcoming week(s). Whenever the PS3 gets upgraded with newer parts the price of making a PS3 goes down. It's always weird to me how making a 45nm chip is both more efficient and cheaper to make than a 65nm or 90nm chip. The PS3 currently has a 90nm RSX chip but will be upgrading to a 65nm RSX chip this fall. The cell processor chip was upgraded from 90nm to 65nm last fall when it received its last price drop.

Besides the new RSX chip rumors, Sony's new video service should debut sometime before their 2010 fiscal year. While rumor has it that most Hollywood companies are currently in the dark about Sony's movie service, Sony is such a large motion picture company that they could probably survive on their own for a short while. And finally, there was a list of games coming to the PS3 between April 2008 and April 2009, and one of those games was White Knight Story by Level 5. We haven't heard anything about White Knight Story in a long time, so this probably confirms that the game will either have an announcement at E3, or will have a huge presence at the Tokyo Game Show this year.

Sony Online Entertainment releases details on DC Universe

Ever since the Marvel MMO failed people have been skeptical about Sony Online Entertainment's DC Universe game. Well never fear, as SOE has confirmed that the game will be coming *although no release date was given* but it appears as if the game will not be at E3 this year. But thankfully I do have new information about DC Universe.

First off players will not be any specific DC character, but instead players will create their own unique superhero, thus avoiding a bunch of Superman's running around creating chaos. Second, DC Universe will be a mix between an action game and an MMORPG, including elements from both games. Players can make their own character with a wide variety of attacks, ranging from actual mystical powers to hard-hitting strength action maneuvers. Also, the DC characters will be in the game as boss characters, providing for some epic battles. Finally, the game will include a lot of PVE and PVP zones, so it shouldn't be hard to find a good fight. That's all for now about DC Universe, hopefully we'll hear more about this PC/PS3 exclusive later in the year.

Metal Gear Solid ships 3 million units

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots continues to clean up on store shelves, and as of last week has shipped 3 million units worldwide. That's 3 million games shipped in 2 weeks, and I'm pretty sure that doesn't count any of the PS3 MGS4 bundles. While I know that units shipped doesn't equal units sold, I'd figure that if the bundle sales were included that it's probably around 3 million sold.

Speaking of the MGS4 bundles, Sony promises to have more MGS4 PS3 bundles on store shelves this month. I guess I was right that the MGS4 PS3 bundle did sell out nation wide; thankfully Sony seems to have this covered and won't run into a Wii-like shortage. The US sales figured aren't out for MGS4 *and they won't be until around mid-July* but I predict that they'll be pretty good. As of a couple days ago *meaning it's slightly more current than the 3 million shipped figure* both Japan and Europe have sold 1 million copies each of MGS4, and I assume North America has too.

I'd go into more details about how awesome MGS4 is, but you guys should all know that by now. It's far and away the best PS3 game, and I'd go as far to say that it's easily the best game for this generation of consoles *PS3, 360, Wii*. You can check out my review of MGS4 here.

Sony PlayStation Store update for the week of June 26

Another Thursday, another PlayStation Store update. I was going to make a joke about it being reliable, but then I remembered it was the Sony PlayStation Store… Any who, this week we were treated to a couple of new demos, as both Top Spin 3 and Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds went up on the PS Store this week. I wrote a review of Hot Shots golf *which can be found here* and stick to my claim that it's the best sports game on the PS3. If you don't already own Hot Shots Golf then be sure to give the free demo a shot. Top Spin 3 is ok, although I wouldn't recommend more than trying the demo.

The PlayStation Store update also saw a new Pain character go up, as players can now buy Nigel for $1. Nigel is basically your typical British punk rock dude, complete with Mohawk and bad accent. While Pain can be really fun, if you've purchased all of the downloadable content you'd probably have spent more than $20 by now on Pain, which is way too much. Any who Pain is a fun game, and Sony just put out a free update that adds a couple more level designs to downtown *basically new levels*. Besides Nigel and the two sports demos, the PlayStation Store included its normal set of Rock Band songs and trailers, with nothing really noteworthy this week. The PC Store put up Midievil Resurrection for download, and that concludes the weekly PlayStation Store update.

B3yond the Tabloids!

It's official, PS3 firmware 2.40 will be out tomorrow *July 2* and will include the long awaited in-game XMB *cross media bar* access. PSP and 360 users have had this feature for a long time now so it's awesome to see PS3 users will finally be able to access their friends and messages without having to quit a game. Trophy support will also be added into firmware 2.40 *kind of like achievement points* and Super Star Dust HD will have them right off the bat tomorrow. Have fun and it's about time guys!

While there are rumors about a 45nm RSX chip coming in the near future for the PS3, Sony has finally confirmed that PS3's will be shipping with the 65nm RSX chips this autumn. The PS3 has shipped with 65nm Cell processor chips since last Christmas, so it's about time the RSX chip got an upgrade for enhanced performance *at a cheaper price*. Maybe the PS3 price cut will be coming after all.

Sony is also prepping a new service called "Life with PlayStation" that will mimic several Wii features. Basically a globe of Earth will appear when users launch this feature, and players will be able to search the weather and news headlines of their location as well as their friend's location. This is basically a rip-off of the Wii Weather and News channels, although upgraded. While there's no release date for when this service could go live, I really don't care a whole lot. I don't use those channels on the Wii, and I won't use them on the PS3.

In some very awesome news for the PS3, CRI will soon release its FileMajik middleware for the PS3. FileMajik is a middleware that specializes in decreasing load times by using various disc mapping and compression methods. It will be available to developers free of charge and has been out for both the 360 and Wii for a while now. Hopefully this leads to smaller load times and less installs for PS3 games.

Valve has confirmed that Half Life 2: Episode 3 will not be at E3 this year. While I had assumed this for a long time, Valve confirmed this week that all of their priorities lie within finishing Left 4 Dead this point and making sure it releases this year for PC and 360 *I don't think a PS3 version is coming, although I have heard sparse rumors that it could*.

A Rainbow Six Vegas 2 map pack will be released for free this month, and it will contain Calypso Casino. Normally I would be jumping for joy, but to be honest I was so underwhelmed while playing Vegas 2 that I lost all interest in the franchise. I'll download Calypso for sure and try it out, but it won't be the same.

Rock Band 2 has been announced. It will ship for the 360 this September and on the PS3 later this year. The game will allow all of the DLC from Rock Band 1 to transfer over to Rock Band 2, and anyone who doesn't want to buy Rock Band 2 can still use all of the Rock Band 2 DLC on Rock Band 1. There'll be more details on Rock Band 2 at E3. Commenting on rhythm based games makes the B3yond writer sad…

Football fans rejoice, Madden 09 has apparently gone gold and will meet the August 12th release date. I haven't purchased a football game since NFL 2K5 and plan on keeping it that way. Actually, I recently purchased NFL Blitz 2001 for the PS1, but that doesn't count, because the game is pure awesome.

While we've known for a while that SOCOM Confrontation would offer the first official PS3 Bluetooth headset if you buy the $60 disc version when it comes out in September *as opposed to the $40 downloadable version*, we finally have some details and a picture of the bad boy. One of the new features is a mute button on the headset, as well as advanced noise cancellation techniques. I've seen some players with extremely bad sound quality on their headsets, so hopefully people will convert to the new headset. Here's a picture:

Sony Online Entertainment has revealed the list of games that they plan to show at this years E3. Free Realms and The Agency, two MMO's coming to the PS3 will be on display, while the PC will have Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Legends of Norrath: Oathbreaker, and both Everquests. I can't wait to see how these PS3 MMO's turn out, it's too bad that the 360 MMO's not named FF11 fail miserably.

B3yond the Cinema!

Here's some footage of Kasbah from SOCOM Confrontation. The game's looking awesome and we'll see more at E3 next week.

Here's some footage of Quarantine from SOCOM Confrontation. It looks even better than Kasbah.

Here's the demonstration of in-game XMB from the 2.40 firmware update.

Here's the demonstration of Trophies from the 2.40 update.

Finally, here's some footage of the upcoming Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, which will be available later this year on the PlayStation Network and XBLA.

The One Man Water Cooler~!

In last weeks edition of B3yond the Report *which can be found here*, Dave R. detailed why he doesn't like Cliffy B. of Epic games. After all, Cliffy B. can come off as a pompous prick that doesn't show any respect for the industry. Some people view Cliffy B. as a man who's let the success of one game *Gears of War* go to his head and completely overrate himself as a legend. While some of these points may have some truth to them, I personally never had a problem with most of the things that Cliffy B. has said, at least until now.

This past week an interview was done with Cliffy B. where he basically attacked Metal Gear Solid, and criticized Hideo Kojima's choice of telling a story. I mean come the fuck on. The guy who made Gears of War is trying to criticize someone for their storytelling? I have a message for Cliffy B., you are not in the same league as Hideo Kojima, and have no right to criticize how he makes games. This would be like Itagaki of Ninja Gaiden telling Hideo Kojima he sucks at storytelling. Hell, Cliffy B. isn't even in the same league as Itagaki, and I consider Itagaki to be overrated.

Gears of War had one of the worst storylines ever in a video game. Hell, I'm even going to begin to explain the story of Gears of War, and I just made a month long feature trying to explain the story of Metal Gear. I mean seriously, why was Marcus at his old house *not to mention it was a freaking mansion*, and why is he an arrogant asshole with no real sense of motivation other than being a serial killer for the hell of it? Cliffy B., you're famous for making a game where people can chainsaw each other, and that's about it. You make the game that satisfy's Halo fans while they wait for their next adventure with Master Chief.

I'm probably coming off as an angry fanboy, which is fine. I'm not really upset at Cliffy B., since I don't think anyone with a brain would actually put him on the same level as someone such as Hideo Kojima. Metal Gear Solid 4 was an amazing game, and it didn't need an arrogant asshole chainsawing the same alien 500 times to do it. At the end of the day Gears of War 2 will come out, probably being the same game with minor additions *curb punching people instead of curb stomping*, and will appeal to the same people that already own 360's, while Kojima won't even recognize Cliffy B. and will make his next video game.

B3yond the Mail!

To Snake211 (Guest): "The only column that really matters here in 411 games." I appreciate the support Snake. And by the way, I wasn't talking about you in The Full Circle column, it was directed towards Joe. I like my fellow Sony comrades.

To Vincent Chiucchi (Registered): Exactly, I do think that poll calling Sony innovative is useless. Why restate what everyone already knows?

To Brad Lascelle (Guest): I had no idea that I was "411's big gaming column". I may write a long column, but I've always stated that I'm the Sony writer, and do not normally detail Microsoft and Nintendo *although I reserve the right to make an exception*. I'm pretty sure the name of this column gives away the hint that I'm the Sony guy. Former 411 Sony writer Mike Minotti made the transition to talking about other consoles besides Sony, but I won't *or at least have no plans to*.

To calem (Guest): I did predict that God of War 3 would be a part of the Sony press conference. It was part of my number 7 pick. And Sony confirmed this past week that GOW3 will be at E3, so I'm already doing well on my predictions.

To Toddo (Guest): Final Fantasy Versus 13 will be more "realistic" and have a darker approach to the game, while FF13 will be a traditional Final Fantasy game *like FF12*. FF Versus 13 is being created by the Kingdom Hearts team, while FF13 is by the traditional FF team. Versus 13 is set in the same universe as FF13, but the two games have no relation. I'd predict that after work on Versus 13 is completed, that work on Kingdom Hearts 3 will begin, probably on the same engine as Versus 13.

As I said before I always read what you guys send me and I appreciate the comments, even if they're sometimes filled with hate. If you wanted a response to your comment and I didn't respond I apologize.

The Open Airwaves with David R.

Well due to complaints and people overreacting, it appears as if I'm "not allowed" to post this feature anymore. The whole point of this feature was to add a second opinion to this column, since otherwise I'm the only guy on this site who writes about Sony, while the site has multiple writers for every other platform *if you include the retro writers who detail Nintendo quite frequently*. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted *I think I can hold my own being the sole representative of Sony anyways*. I'd say more, but with the way people overreacted over this feature I'd probably "disappear". Sorry to Dave R. and Eric *maker of all the sweet banners*, this was out of my control.

In order to bring the mood back up, I present an image of a great man.

The 411mania Empire~!

The Full Circle by Joe Roche. Give Joe some credit this week, as he's finally learning "how to link the other articles" in his column. I guess someone sent him a copy of "HTML for dummies".
Nintendophiles by Theo Fraser. I bet Theo can't wait for all of the exciting news that Nintendo will present at its E3 press conference. Wii Music and Super Mario Baseball for life!
The PC Centric Extravaganza by Chris Evans.
The Select and Start News by Vincent Chiucchi.
The 10th Hour by Derek Robbins. I'd say something negative to Derek, but after alienating Joe and Theo *hey, got to get ready for E3*, I figured I needed at least one comrade.

B3yond the Wallpaper!

Well I have a special treat for everyone, as I am here to present to you the official B3yond the Report wallpaper. I recently tricked all of my fellow 411games comrades into giving me a little description of themselves, and it has led to the next strike in my war against the other news writers. A huge thanks to B3yond the Super fan Eric for the submission, and without further adieu, here's the official B3yond the Report wallpaper.

Download the official B3yond the Wallpaper here. It's available in many awesome resolutions. Here's a downsized version of the wallpaper.

B3yond the Report for life!

Signing Off!

Well that's it for me this week folks, as I've got plenty to do before E3 next week. I was planning to take a week off, but that obviously won't be happening with all of the E3 festivities taking place. If you're wondering what games I've been playing lately it's basically been a lot of NFL Blitz 2001 and NBA Jam. I'm in a craze of multiplayer arcade madness, and it definitely helps to pass the slow summer months *although MGS4 and Battlefield Bad Company are good games out this summer*. I also managed to check out the new Futurama DVD, which sadly disappointed me. I thought the first DVD was too much like a movie and didn't add in enough comedy *although I did like the first movie*, while I think the new movie is too much like an extended episode with lots of comedy and little story *it's still alright*. Any who, just thought I'd mention something other than games. Keep checking back here for all of your Sony news, I'll be back next Tuesday with another edition of B3yond the Report. Cya in 7!

So is it okay to flame your column since I don't care for the PS3 or are we only allowed to flame people that don't share the opinion the MGS 4 is god. You can't try to build a console based on one interesting game. Honestly, I will take my Wii and 360 any day. Not to mention that the douche bag Sony marks flaming every other column with "MGS Rules" is pretty lame and counterproductive. To relate you to college football you guys are like the Colorado of consoles, your not nearly as good as you want to think, your douche bags (most of you), and your subpar to average at best.

Posted By: rob391 (Guest)  on June 30, 2008 at 11:17 PM

Wow....

Rob391 is a gentleman, a saint, and a fine....pfft. I couldn't tell that lie for much longer. Loser admits to not owning a PS3, but comments in a Sony-centric column???? If we crack your skull open, are we going to find an IOU letter with God's signature? If they need to kill innocent people's brain cells, they'll ask you to write a column.

Posted By: David (Guest)  on June 30, 2008 at 11:45 PM

Yeah, thanks for the props Mark.
MGS4 IS the game of the generation. Cliffy B is a douchebag. He'll never become or even reach the godlike status of Kojima. Gears of War 2 will be the same ol' shooter that makes Xbots gibber and hoot. With diminishing exclusives, same old games and nothing much else, you'd forgive these xboys if they get excited for scraps.

Posted By: Snake211 (Guest)  on July 01, 2008 at 12:48 AM

Rob, MGS 4 is godly and it rules. GTFO, you douchebag. YOu just can't stop crying because the PS3 is owning right now. LOL

Posted By: Snake211 (Guest)  on July 01, 2008 at 01:16 AM

David, I doubt Snake owns a PS3 or Wii butit doesn't stop him from trolling other non-PS3 columns does it? Double standards much? Can't you jerks enjoy what you game on without the need to revert to being 6 year olds?

Posted By: Dogmatic (Guest)  on July 01, 2008 at 01:40 AM

I wonder how the DC MMO will handle people making copycat characters. People, as City of Heroes showed, want to be the heroes they know - not Joe Nobody with a cape.

It could be interesting if they keep your character in contact with the 'real' heroes, like Star Wars Galaxies tried to do after the revamp.

Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered)  on July 01, 2008 at 02:58 AM

Nobody wanted to read through David R having his little hissy fit anyway. The last one didn't make much sense, just a bunch of name calling and other words put together.

"Something really bothers me. I have to get this off my chest. It will really help matters. Damn public opinion because I really need to get this weight off my chest.

I have something to say about the "bass ackwards" thinking of some 360 supporters"

We get it, you have something to say. Spit it out.

Guess that was his way to make his speech longer

snake may not own a ps3, but he does own a wii. blame the american economy.

Posted By: michael shinobi (Guest)  on July 01, 2008 at 05:49 AM

I must have took Cliffy B's comments in a different light than you did Mark. Admittedly I didn't read teh whole interview or article in question, and have only read little snippets, but I took it as Cliffy was just trying to say that Gears was polar opposites with MGS. I did read on IGN, with the Gears Multiplayer hands-on, that Cliffy acknowledged the problems with the story in Gears, and said they are trying to make it more streamlined and easier to understand. As I said, I didn't read the whole transcript with Cliffy, but we took that statement in different contexts. I don't think he was criticizing Kojima's storytelling ability, that would be extremely idiotic. I think he was rather using it as a bench point to say that Gears would be more action oriented, and less on the extended cut-scenes.
Just thought I would offer an alternate take on your thoughts.

This just in Snake is still a douche, and now joining him in the douche ranks is Rob391. you kids have fun now, ya hear?

Posted By: Toddo (Guest)  on July 01, 2008 at 10:49 AM

I feel like I'm the only one who still likes Gears of War. When it came out everyone else seemed to like it but now everyone thinks its some god awful shooter. What did I miss?

Posted By: Drew Robbins (Guest)  on July 01, 2008 at 11:18 AM

I hope they sell that headset seperatly too.

Posted By: Ant-LOX (Guest)  on July 01, 2008 at 11:35 AM

Drew,

In the movie industry, the Oscar winners are released in the Fall/Winter. Gears, to me, was like any other summer action flick. Heavy on action, light on story telling. It isn't a bad game, per se, but its faults are more apparent when compared to recent releases.

Posted By: David (Guest)  on July 01, 2008 at 01:32 PM

All I'll say is, total sales...

Wii - 28.18 million
X-Box - 19.48 million
PS3 - 13.77 million

Credit to http://www.vgchartz.com/

So all the arguing can end. The PS3 is selling, MGS4 is good. The PS3 is last because one good game does not make a good console. Live with it.

Posted By: Realist999 (Guest)  on July 01, 2008 at 04:11 PM

I have all 3 consoles and when MGS4 came out my PS3 was never off. Now I've finished it that's it. Im back with my Wii and Smash Bros and my Xbox and Call of Duty. If the PS3 is cleaning up, its not doing a good job. I still can't get Wii Fit anywhere but theres still plenty of MGS4 games and PS3 consoles for sale everywhere.

Posted By: Guest#6384 (Guest)  on July 01, 2008 at 04:36 PM

What I don't understand is why when someone critises the PS3 they are an XBox fan boy. If you're a realist (taking a pun from a posters name here) you should be able to look at your console and note its pluses and neagatives. No console is perfect and if I was being honest, the best we ever had was the 16-bit era because there was none of this, my graphics better than yours crap. It was all about the games and which game was better. The Wii doesnt have the best graphics. Microsoft has WAY to many FPSs and the PS3 costs an arm and a leg and has hardly any good games. Gametrailers.com did a top 10 PS3 games feature and could only list 7 because there just isnt a top 10 list out there.

The 16 bit era was just about good games. There was no "Look how many polygons we can pump out." What the hell does that have to do with how a game plays??? The PS3 and XBox 360 are just the XBox and PS2 with better graphics. At least the Wii is doing SOMETHING different. So different and so successful than both Sony and Microsoft are making Wii-mote like controllers.

Now MG4

You are not the only one who liked Gears of War. I loved the co-op campaign, and thought it was a blast to play through. Once you got into multiplayer matches though, that is where the fun stopped for me. I did not like the idea of having to put 3 clips in an enemy just to get them down, and then hope you get over to him before he is revived, or you get shot by someone else, to deliver the fatal curb stomp. This is the same reason I didn't care much for Halo online. With that said, I am looking forward to Gears 2. I hope they offer a 4 player co-op, instead of just two. Still not excited about the multi-player, but I am willing to give it a second chance to see if it's improved any.

Now MGS4 is out it will get the rewards it deserves because it really is a masterpiece, but people will find faults with it. Everyone finds faults with games. Look at Mario 64, Ocarina of time, MGS1, 2 and 3. Given time MGS4 will bring up faults as well.

My only really fault is the bosses. This isnt a knock on them in the game, but when you compare them to The Fox Hound group and the Dead Cell crew they just don't seem as fun. A perfect example of that is why Psycho Mantis makes a cameo and theres an almost similar Sniper Wolf battle. I admit that after the amazing characters of MGS1, 2 and 3, it would have been so hard to top them and thats why Vamp and Ocelot are the only ones who really matter at the end of the day.

You guys need to actually listen to Cliffy B's comment before channeling your inner fanboy. All he said was he was not trying to make a game that told its story like MGS. IE, GOW2 will be more action oriented. I don't see what the big deal is. MGS4 is definitely one of the best games this generation (and my personal favorite), but that doesnt mean all games would work using its cinematic style. Had Cliffy B said Bioshock or Mass Effect (the other AAA games this gen) you guys wouldn't have your drawers in a wad.

This is the difference betwen japanese and western developers. Japanese developers are humble, honorable and let their work speak for them, while western developers are brash, full of hot air and always under deliver. The only exception is Itagaki but he's M$ stooge and they have no honor whatsoever.
Cliffy B can never bcome Kojima's equal nor release a magnum opus as awesome as MGS4, which is EXCLUSIVE on the PS3.

Snake211:

So Itagaki is a Microsoft stooge because he developes for them. He developes for the DS as well and feels he is owed money and is attempting to get it. Like Peter Jackson and New Line. Thats a pretty pathetic way to look ar something. Kojima used to develope for the NES and, while he finished the series on PS, do you really think he will commit all his games to a Sony system? Will that make him a stooge then? When he decides multiformat is a good thing? It's business and developers do what they can to make money.

Resident Evil 4 was supposed to be a GameCube exclusive. Sales of Cube were low so it was ported. PS3 sales are up right now, but in total, they are behind Xbox360 and Wii, and before you go into fanboy denial just LOOK AT THE FUCKING SALE FIGURES!!! Staying with PS3 will mean less money and while developers may have passion and drive, their companies need money to survive, or get bought out.

When did Cliffy B EVER say he wanted to or was Kojima's equal? The whole comment made in this article and everything said in the comments is pathetic, especially since they have not even taken what Cliffy said in its proper context. Plus, he's not likely to care what you or anyone else thinks seeing as he's probably pretty well off right now.

Oh Middleman, so angry. I'm suprised you didn't bust out a vein

Yes he is an M$ stooge, he does nothing but talk smack to DMC and Tekken developers, thatis very unbecoming for a Japanese and obviously influenced my his M$ dealings. He even criticsized NG: Sigma (which outscored NG2 BTW) for being on the PS3. So if that's not moneyhats talking, i duno what is.

2. The Japanese are more likely to gravitate to the PS3 than the 360. Look at the worldwide sales, The PS3 is outselling the 360 in Japan and Europe. America isn't the whole world.

3.Like I said, Cliffy B., like all western developers, is an arrogant ass. He should know his place and not comment anything on Kojima and MGS4.

Once again, your fit induced arguments have been demolished, courtesy of me. :)

Middleman, just in case my previous post isn't posted, here it is again

1. Kojima has badmouthed DMC and Tekken while having a self inflated view of his mediocre works. That isn't becoming of a Japanese. He also badmouths NG: Sigma, which not only outscored NG2, its the superior version of NG. PLUS it sold more than NG2. So if that's not M$ moneyhats talking, i don't know what is.

2. See my NG: Sigma point. Japan would rather buy it on the PS3 then spending money on the embarrasment called the 360. Which is true, look at its sales there, an embarrasment. Its also outsold by the PS3 in Europe. America is not the whole world.

3.Cliffy B is a typical arrogant western developer. He should have just shut up instead of making comments about Kojima, who has done so much for gaming than he ever wished he could.

Stop being so angry LMAO

CliffyB isnt real. he was created by microsoft to give a face and hype to their mindless shooter gears of war so it can appeal to idiot mtv blink 182 fratboy idiots and not the people who made gaming what it is.

Snake211

LOL, you have a very high opinion of yourself dont you. Are you possibly of Western origin, being arrogent enough to assume I was angry and that you have stemed an "argument" with your witty reply. Has it ever occured to you that I wasn't angry, but just passionate and sick of fanboys like you who like to twist things to fit their own logic. The bottom line is the PS3 may be selling well and outselling at the moment, but it is waaaaaaaaaaaaay behind in sales compared of total world sales.

America isn't the whole world. I know, I don't live in America, again you assume something, showing your arrogence. You must be of Western Origin.

Ah, I see so Kojima badmouthing a game means he is humble and passionate and yet Itagaki badmouting a game makes him a sell out and a stooge. I like your logic. Since Itagaki developes for DS too I dont see how he can be seen as a MS stooge. I simply see it as developers forming an opinion. Myamoto said he could make a game like Halo but didnt want to because he wants to make games everyone can enjoy. Is that a knock on Halo? Does that make Myamoto a stooge too? If Itagaki is a stooge then I guess, by your logic, Kojima is too. I dont believe either of them are, but if we're following your logic then they both are. Even taking the time to write 2 replies, you still make yourself look like an arrogent idiot.

Have you actually listened to Cliffy B's interview. He doesnt say at any point in it that he wants to be Kojami. He offered, if anything, a small critic of the MGS series, in saying how their style of story telling won't work for all games. He's right too. Can you see a Mario or Zelda game working with an MGS story. If Cliffy had said this about Myamoto or someone else the Sony fan boys wouldnt be saying a thing, but because it involves something about a guy who developed a great game for the PS3, they feel they need to tear him down. Now theyve got something to crow about now, with MGS4, they think they have an opinion now. Like rob391 said earlier, you're all like the Colorado of consoles, not nearly as good as you want to think you are. I'd put you up with Liverpool. Not as great as you used to be and living off of past glories to justify why you should be treated better. The fanboys are in total denial about the performance of the PS3 and thats pretty sad to see.

I have MGS4, I love it and I've finished it and now I'm ready for the next thing. The only thing that interests me is Resident Evil 5. If Sony think their system will sell just because of MGS4 their sadly mistaken.

We all know CliffyB is really an android. He was created by Doctor Noonien Soong. Being a first run model, CliffyB lacks logic. He has too much emotion. I think that is one of the reasons (besides Lore) that Emotions are cut out.

Metal Gear Solid=Rehash of previous games. Say what you want about the 360 and the Wii but at least they are attempting to try something new with Gears of War and Wii-mote. MTS4 is simply the same as it's predecessor with better graphics and a few new bells and whistles . I mean I would be more interested in simply watching the cut scenes as opposed to playing it. You can only go to the well so many times. Same with any game, hell I own GTA4 but I am not under the delusion that it is paving any new ground. It is simply another version of the GTA franchise with a few new features. Also before anyone bitches I have played MGS 4, 3, 2, and 1. My primary console in the previous generation was a PS2 and before that a PS1. I would love to get behind the PS3, however thus far they have shown me nothing that excites me enough to buy the system. The fact that every column I read has some douche bag screaming that everything sucks besides PS3/MGS4 further removes me from any interest in the system. I want a system to play games with, not an overpriced Blu-Ray player...

Posted By: rob391 (Guest)  on July 02, 2008 at 10:16 AM

Rob391,

You are the exact same type of douche...but from the opposite end of the spectrum. You have NOT played MGS4. If you did, you would KNOW that it isn't the same game. Quit acting like you have an ASD and use some common sense.

You are just a jealous fanboy that can't play MGS4. You claim that you claim that you played MGS4, but how do I not know you are lying? PROVE ME WRONG! You say it is the same game, but you haven't played it. So, shut your yap and get out of this column hater. IF you played the game, you woul see the error in your statement. (how many writers for 411mania state that the game is crap...?)

About the 360 doing things new? What the **** are they doing that is new? A 16-40% failure rate? I guess that is new. I mean, no company with their right mind would release a system THAT prone to failures.

The Wii, I will give you that one because the controller. That is new. I can't fault your hate-filled logic on that one. It also has the best download service out of the three consoles.

In short, you are a tool. You bend over backwards and you let Microsoft stick it where the sun doesn't shine. That is fine...if want to get married in CA, but don't bring your agenda into this column. There are other columns for you.

Reminder: Shut your mouth and PROVE ME WRONG.

Its the return of David R hater... I have donned a new name, for I see a new enemy to common logic and tasteful posting... You can now call me Snake211 hater. Snake you are now on notice. Whenever you post your ignorant, pro PS3 propaganda, I will be there to point out your stupidity.
By the way Dave, thank you for now making your posts not so hateful. Much appreciated.
Snake the douche said: "Like I said, Cliffy B., like all western developers, is an arrogant ass. He should know his place and not comment anything on Kojima and MGS4."
I'm sorry, exactly what game have developed to be able to say anything about Cliffy B? Let alone udder Cliffy and Kojima in the same sentence. Man the game you produced must be the best thing ever, in order for you to comment on both of those guys.
Sucks when someone uses your own logic against you doesn't it?
I wonder if Sony knows there are people that dumb, who are out there speaking the joys of thir system? Its funny how Itagaki is labeled as a MS stooge, yet he is one of the amazing Japanese developers you spout off about... Is this simply because he doesn't like the PS3? Did he hurt Snake's feelings by saying he didn't like the PS3? How can you be so disrespectful of this Japanese developer? He clearly fits into your fantasies... Can we get on finding some Japanese game developer fetish porn for Snake? I think that may be the best way to get him to shut his fuckin mouth.
To quote the moron one more time: "your fit induced arguments have been demolished, courtesy of me. :)"

Kojima has never ever badmouthed any developer, Itagaki has.
And The PS3 has actually moved thanks to MGS4 in Japan and Europe.
The PS3 has a lot of exclusives in its sleeves like FFXIII, FFXIII Versus, White Knight Story, Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5, Infamous, DC Universe MMO. The 360 just can't compete as most of its games will be appearing on the PC, so no exclusives.
You just got owned by Snake 211, kid ;)

Rob when you said MGS4 is a rehash, i stopped reading there. You obviously never played it. Heck, you said you weren't interested in a PS3. Your arguments are mindless rants at best. Try again when you actually have something to say :)

Rob, MGS4 got a 10 or very high marks and praise from major reviewers. None of them ever said it was a rehash. They said it was a well executed cinematic like experience. So no, its not a rehash, your argument has failed.

Snake211:

You seem to think everyone is arguing with you. Maybe they're just stating a point, you know, like you are. You don't agree with their point, they don't agree with you. Just man it up and accept it.

The Playstation 3 is selling because of MGS4. Yes, that's true, but still world wide sales figures show it waaaaaaaaay behind.

Wii - 28.18 million
X-Box - 19.48 million
PS3 - 13.77 million

When it reaches the 19 million of Xbox360 then you'll have something to talk about. Until then you're just a little boy trying to make some noise because his system isn't.

Snake211
The problem with most of the "exclusives" you listed there are most of them are sequels and in Sony's case, their sequels are just more of the same with better graphics. What does the PS3 do differently to the PS2, which in my opinion was the greatest console of all time. Apart from throw prettier graphics at me, it does nothing. The PS3 is a groundreaking piece of hardware but Sony's arrogence have caused it to get trapped where it is at the moment. Like Sega, they assumed if it had their name on it people would buy it, no matter the price. Fortunatly, unlike Sega, Sony have the money to pull themselves out of this. Exclusives are all well and good but unless they offer something new I really don't care.

Snake and David R., why don't you tell everyone what makes MGS4 not a rehash instead of just saying it isn't with no support.

I have nothing against rehashes, but come on? What is it doing thats new?

Posted By: Drew Robbins (Guest)  on July 02, 2008 at 02:55 PM

Hey Snake211. You are a moron. If your biggest argument of a system selling is because of ONE game... There is definitely a problem. I'm not going to bash the PS3, but I will bash your arguments. You spout off like a broken record about MGS4 moving PS3's and then go on and on about how M$ has no exclusives to sell their machine.... If that is the case, and Microsoft has sold 19 million units, how is one game selling a few PS3's a good thing in the long run?

I'm all about games, and I do not doubt that MSG4 is a great title. I have played it... very limited (right up until the Dreben character and system is introduced), but I have played it. The type of game is not for me, but I told my friend that I want to come back and watch all the cut scenes in one fell swoop, so nobody is denying the greatness of the game... Well except that one moron. But my point is that it speaks better of a system selling on it's own merit, as opposed to having to have that one killer app to move systems. I would like to suggest you find some other evidence that proves the PS3 is the better system. and I don't want to hear shit about the failure rate... That argument is OWNED by David R.. (cheap plug!!)

Does anyone else notice that Snake is trying to word all his arguments so that it seems like only ninjas play and develop for the PS3? All this talk about honor, and being humble... I could really care less if the game is made by a nice family man who works his job to raise his 2.5 kids and pay a mortgage... On the opposite side of the spectrum, if the game designer is a closet junkie, with a $10,000 a day addiction to gambling and hookers, it has no bearing on me purchasing a game.

Gears is fun for what it is, MGS4 is a masterpiece for what it is. Can't you just enjoy being a gamer with options? who gives a flying fuck what system I play a game on. I sure don't. It's a consumers market... I say fuck loyalty to one or the other. I am going to enjoy as much gaming goodness as I can, no matter what system said goodness comes out on.

It's funny how you mention Kojima being a honorable japanese developer, and only western idiots develop for the Xbox... How do you explain the MGS titles that were ported over on the last generation of consoles?

Your tired argument has failed like a three legged cat trying to bury a turd on a frozen pond. :)

Wow nothing goes wrong with the PS3...lol. For added fun why don't you check out the comments:)

"Last night's update didn't seem to go all that well for most PS3 owners. Sony has already pulled Software Update v.2.40. They will be pulling back to version 2.36.

"PS3 owners were reporting that their systems would hang on the initial Playstation wave screen and no icons or controller functions, not a damn thing but the wave would show up on screen."

the RROD problem is worse than this ps3 firmware bit. i call it a bit because it will be fixed and forgotten by the weekend while the 360 will be forever tainted by this like the nes and blowing into carts or the gamecube sucking. the cell has more cpu's and thus allows for bigger greater games to be ran and not kill the machine. 360 cannot handle this and thus dies.

face it children ps3 is the future of gaming while 360 is just a middle ground console like the dreamcast.

Ahh, Snake211 hater. Do you have a mancrush with me so much that you have to put my name in your name? lol

Now, MGS4 IS the killer App for the PS3. After the that, is a whole slew of killer games that will sustain the PS3's rise. Compared to the 360? What has it got? Nothing, that's what.

Sony has a sense of honor and fair play. That's why they don't resort to buying exclusives from developers, according to SCEA. Developers go to them because of Sony's fair nature.
M$ is ruining the industry with its money hat attitude, and that is why i will never have anything to do with their consoles. Their greed also turned off Japanese gamers, who are all to wise to their desperate attempts. Its all about loyalty and honor.
MGS2 was ported but it was a rubbish port anyway, and it didn't sell well on the xbox. The Twin Snakes was a Silicon Knights attempt, with some input from Godjima, but was a noble failure. Other than that Kojima NEVER ported MGS3 and will never port MGS4.
So, again your ramblings are neutralized. :)

sigh, Drew, its not a rehash because NONE of the reviewers said it was a rehash. It wouldn't get perfect scores if it was a rehash. Why can't you xbots stop being jealous of this game and why do you insist on posting lies and FUD, that is too stupid to be believable?

Posted By: Snake211 (Guest)  on July 02, 2008 at 10:39 PM

What makes MGS4 NOT a rehash?

-The ability to use Militias as tools to sneak past PMCs.
-The ability to have full scale wars with multiple PMCs (with the help of the militias.
-The ability to buy/unlock weapons/ammo on the fly.
-The ability to mimic your surroundings due to Optocamo.
-The A.I. of the PMC's and the troops/your interaction with both.
-The ability to play it completely via stealth OR to make it as action pact as you wish.
-The ability to take weapons of your enemies and use them against them.
(a number of reasons that make it very remarkable)

NOW, are you guys just lazy or what? Do you need people to spoon feed you answers? Seriously, you can read ANY professional review and get the EXACT same information (and more).

Thank you for listing MINOR changes in the game play David. Except for "The ability to play it completely via stealth OR to make it as action pact as you wish." since if I remember correctly you could do that in the previous games.:)I stand by my opinion. :) Also Snake, your reasoning about it not being a rehash because reviews told you so was priceless. Opinion and free thought are obviously not encouraged here. I didn't say it wasn't a well made rehash but even with small additions to gameplay it is still at the core pretty much the same game as MGS 3, MGS2, and MSG except with, like I said, better graphics and more bells and whistles. I mean I have played the previous ones and didn't have much problem jumping in to this one. Also unrelated to this, if you follow the link to the PS3 software update 2.10 crashing you will find for some reason PS3 owners complaining that Sony keeps deleting their threads about the failure from their messageboards.:)Well I guess I will just have to stick to my Nintendo Wii and 360 that have worked perfectly since I bought them.:(

You already stated that you don't own a PS3, why would we value your opinion? Therefore, you invalidated your own opinion. You know nothing, and you are just a jealous fanboy.

About the changes being minor, that is your opinion. We already know that you invalidated your own opinion because you don't own the system. HA!

Get back to us when you have a PS3. I don't want to hear the garbage about you playing it on a friend's system. Unless you have a PSN ID, you can shut your mouth. Until then, the exit is on your right.

Posted By: Snake211 (Guest)  on July 03, 2008 at 05:42 AM

I love the Sonyfanboys thinking that because people don't own a PS3 it makes them a jelouse fanboy. I do own a PS3 and since MGS4 was finished I've not looked at it. I've been happy with my Wii and 360. Why? Because they have good fun games, that don't break down, crash and now with the added firmware problem and Sony having the arrogence to pull complaints and threaten their customers, I wont be putting it on for a long time. The arrogence of that shocks me and the fact that Sonyfanboys have to defend that shows how dense and narrow minded they really are. You keep being loyal to a console that is last and let the open minded realists enjoy their gaming.

Posted By: Realist999 (Guest)  on July 03, 2008 at 05:50 AM

Those arguments are pathetic.

What makes MGS4 NOT a rehash?

-The ability to use Militias as tools to sneak past PMCs.

Right, and that makes the game a total new experience because...? You're still sneaking past things. Only this time they're mini metal gears.

-The ability to have full scale wars with multiple PMCs (with the help of the militias.

Again, replacing the soilders from previous games with mini metal gears. Hardly anything new.

-The ability to buy/unlock weapons/ammo on the fly.

Oh you mean like in Resident Evil 4 with the merchant? Only the Merchant didnt need a half hour cut scene to get his point across.

-The ability to mimic your surroundings due to Optocamo.

Wow, AMAZING !!! That really helps you advance doesn't it. Optocamo and the Camo from MGS3 is the same thing, only you don't need to select it.

-The A.I. of the PMC's and the troops/your interaction with both.

How does that make the game different? Its just a nice touch? The A.I was at it's best in MGS2 and 3. What you have here is no real difference. They've just added so you can't hide in a box.

-The ability to play it completely via stealth OR to make it as action pact as you wish.

Oh, you mean like MGS1,2,3 and any other Metal Gear Solid game?

-The ability to take weapons of your enemies and use them against them.
(a number of reasons that make it very remarkable)

Oh, like in Goldeneye 007 on the N64. Yeah, the N64. It's about time MGS did something like this, seeing as Goldeneye is over 10 years old.

So by David's reasoning none of the PS3 owners should ever talk about the X Box 360 or the Wii since their opinion doesn't matter because they don't own the system. GREAT!!! I will make you a deal, if you guys can extend the courtesy you expect I will gladly not comment in this article or any other PS3 article again. This means whenever I read a 360 or Wii article I shouldn't read any flaming from Sony fanboys, which is the whole reason I even commented on this article. I could have cared less about the PS3 until, while trying to read articles I care about pertaining to the systems I own, I kept having to read through flame comments. In my opinion I am happy that there are 3 different consoles to enjoy and whichever you like is your own opinion. I would venture to guess the fact that your system is last in total sales and relying on one game probably make PS3 owners pretty insecure so they feel the need to flame other articles. Not to mention that said game is more of the same old, same old. Wouldn’t it be nice just to comment on articles that actually have relevance to the console(s) that you own? Now dance monkey!

Why defend a game to people that aren't blessed enough to understand it? Sometimes, I feel like I'm trying to explain fire to neanderthals. If you don't like it, that is fine. It is your loss.

Okay I will drop the snake211 from my name so as not to get your hopes up about a supposed mancrush... So Dave, let me get this straight... Because I played the game, but do not own a PS3 I am not allowed to comment on the game? That is the most asinine thing I have ever heard you spew... And Snake if sony is playing with such honor and nobility, why is it they are taking all the great things about the 360, and the wii and implementing them.... excuse me, trying to implement them with the latest firmware update? things like Trophies (cough*achievements*cough), a cross media bar, which is a regular thing currently on the 360, they tried a bit of motion control, but from what I hear that failed miserably... Hell even their supposed Great games , Killzone, and Resistance, are constantly labeled as the "Halo Killer". If Halo is such a bad game, why is your precious Sony so gung-ho on creating a game that has to be a Halo Killer?
Your reasoning for MSG not being a rehash of previous ideas is astounding... None of the reviews called it a rehash, so that means it is not. I got news for ya pal... GTA4 got near perfect scores from every site as well, but that doesn't change the fact that it is basically the same game time after time, with a spit shine on the graphics.
In regards to the latest firmware update problems, So Sony sees a problem and fixes it, and all will be forgotten and forgiven, but Xbox sees the problem and makes steps to fix it, yet they will be forever tainted by it.
Good ports, bad ports, it doesn't matter. The fact remains that they were ported, and you admitted yourself they were done with input from Kojima... All's that proves is that the driving force for Kojima is the same as it is for everyone... MONEY!! If MGS was so special to him, why would he let a bad port happen? If that is his baby, you would think he would take steps to make sure it is done right. Oh no, he got paid, right? So I'm sure this makes him a noble Japanese man, that did what he did just to stick it to the west, right?

David-What is there to explain?? Or is it the fact that people have valid points about MGS4 being a rehash and you can't handle it??? Your reasoning skill fail. I would go over this more but what999 and realist999 have pretty much destroyed you. Also when you make a statement such as "You already stated that you don't own a PS3, why would we value your opinion? Therefore, you invalidated your own opinion. You know nothing, and you are just a jealous fanboy." then IMMEDIATELY go to a 360 column to say shit you invalidate your own statement. If you believed what you said you wouldn't be in the 360 column since you don't own the system. You not only fail in your argument but at life. Now dance monkey!

"Why defend a game to people that aren't blessed enough to understand it? Sometimes, I feel like I'm trying to explain fire to neanderthals. If you don't like it, that is fine. It is your loss."

Not blessed enough to understand it. LOL. The game's storyline becomes a total waste of time when they make it so crazy that nobody understands it. Except for fanboys of course who mull it over like it makes sense to them and declare it genius because they can't admit that it doesn't. The game relies on the story since you don't actually get to play much of it and when the story fails, so does the game.

You don't get the 'rehash'' comments? How can you not understand how the game just treads the same tired ground over again? They even go back to an earlier game. So sad.
