The Checkpoint 07.07.08: A Checkpoint Shut-up to Fanboys
Posted by John Curry on 07.07.2008
This week the Checkpoint looks at why gamers who are loyal to only one system are missing out in the gaming world and a look at how comments left are actually useless when the whole “fanboy” mentality is used.
This weekend was my birthday and as such I have not been really in the proper mindset to fully evaluate the world of gaming. However, I did find something that seems to be a consistent factor in the world of gaming, the fan boys of their systems. While I can understand how people want can be biased towards the systems they own, I do believe that entering with the mentality that one system is truly "superior" to another is detrimental to the gaming world.
Let us start by taking a look at the comments that signify how useless comments can be.
Gears of War 2 will still be the same drab brown colored mindless shooter, which will be on the PC too anyway.
Too Human will flop. M$ has NOTHING this year that will rival MGS4 or the other upcoming EXCLUSIVES the PS3 has. The PS3 has won 2008, give it up xbots.

MGS4 is perfect because Godjima made it. Not some hack western developer. Bow down to greatness fools. Exclusive only to the Godstation 3.

Sorry Joe, the Ps3 bricking isn't as widespread as you would hope.
http://kotaku.com/5021950/sony-240-firmware-problems-not-widespread
So you xboys can just quit with the sky is falling routine. Sony is on top of things. :)
And NG2 DLC is milking you xboys. LMAO
buying outifts? That should be there for free or included in the game. But i'm sure you guys are used to paying for stuff, if you get what i mean.

The fact tha Halo 3 pales in comparison to other games, that doesn't really mean a lot, does it. The hype of that series was created by Microsoft to sell consoles (and some people really like sipping their Kool-Aid).
I'm not going to argue with Derek about needing to end the Metal Gear Solid/Halo storyline. I agree with him 100%. However, Metal Gear Solid was the story of Solid Snake. They can make more Metal Gear games...if they want. Microsoft will do the same thing (Halo Wars anyone?) with the their series.

It is hard for anyone to sit here and logically call any one system superior to another when each system offers something unique and creative. The PS3 has MGS4 and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. The Xbox 360 has the advanced online system, Halo and Too Human. The Wii has the innovative control system and Super Mario Galaxy. If you simply select to follow one system that is your decision but to sit there and say that only one system knows how to make games better than other systems is just your justification for only purchasing one system. Somehow you feel that by telling people that they are "xbots", "xboys" "sony boys" among others is nothing more than your way to feel superior to everyone without a logical and reasonable argument. The simple fact is that by simply calling people who don't have the same opinions or feelings about games and systems that you do ignorant or fanboys is just childish. The simple reality is not everyone can jump up and buy all three systems. I mean seriously the total cost is over 1200 bucks for the three of them.
All systems have their own problems as well. The RROD, the patch problems for PS3, the lack of an internet system for the Wii are just examples of these problems. Not one of the systems is perfect in every way. The only systems that are really perfect are the ones you own. That is just the reality of it, you aren't going to go around telling everyone that you bought a $500 piece of garbage. You feel the need to criticize everything about the other systems simply because you don't own it and justify your reasoning for not owning it based on all of the other criticisms you read and hear about them. I don't blame you for it but realize that you do not one iota of good complaining about a system you don't own. If you do you will miss out on a lot of the great things about the world of gaming.
Your point is lost....since I own all three systems, I play all three systems, and I enjoy all three systems, your logic is flawed, at best.

I personally am loyal to a specific type of game, western RPGs and anything that will make the gaming industry turn away from other game types is great for me. I personally hope that the PS3 and Wii either fail or start their own decent line of western RPGs. When I heard the PS3 came out I was absolutely sure I'd end up buying it as soon as Sony made an exclusive RPG I could not resist. I am still waiting. The xbox360 has exclusives like Mass Effect, Too Human & the upcoming Fable 2. Then there's Star Wars The Force Unleashed which goes to just about all known consoles. That's the type of games I want and if a console doesn't devote any effort to such games then I dance on its grave the day it completely fails. Should the PS3 and the Wii start rendering such exclusives I would buy those consoles immediately.

The Wii does have Internet. In fact it uses the Opera browser. You connect to a wireless network, use an ethernet connection directly to your modem or pay for an adapter to connect to Nintendo's Wifi system.
Posted By: Reality (Guest) on July 07, 2008 at 09:01 AM
LMAO. Really? They don't have to buy all 3 systems, just the ones that have more potential, like, the PS3. Sell the rest.

Cry more.

John Curry,
The actual problem for the Wii, besides your error on internet system, is third party publishers. That has been there problem for a LONG time. Almost all of the best games are released by Nintendo themselves. On a second thought, you might want to switch internet system with ONLINE play. Then your statement will ring true.
The 2.40 update had an isolated problem because Sony pulled the update before more people could feel the effects. Fortunately, I grabbed the update before it was pulled. In addition, I can report that my PS3 is working just fine with the update. *whew*
The RROD is an isolated problem...only 16-30% (depending on your source) have that problem. Fortunately for me, I only suffered a DVD drive that crapped out on me. While a problem itself, it isn't in the same league as the RROD. Unfortunately, it isn't covered by the 3 year warranty. :-(
But I agree with you about people being only loyal to one console. My only loyalities are with the games themselves. However, I will call a game out that doesn't really evolve the series at all. Hell, I will call out Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony when they claim that "this game" is best ever (and it just provides recycled themes from other games in that genre).
Also, nice chop job on my quote. I guess you didn't want people to know where you pulled that quote. ;-D

Awesome. Thanks for giving a shout-out to snake211 in this short, needless article. Now he'll never shut up and leave. Way to feed the troll.

Much obliged Archer :)

wow, you dedicate a column to getting owned in the comments section? you have no balls and no honor. snake211 is bringing you down to earth with his comments. the ps3 IS the future and you need to accept it and sell your 360 now before it becomes another dreamcast.
Posted By: Mike Shinobi (Guest) on July 07, 2008 at 10:19 AM
By the way, since when does espousing the strengths of the PS3 equate to trolling. Just because you don't like what i say, doesn't mean i'm trolling. I say what i believe in and i believe in what i say.
Posted By: Snake211 (Guest) on July 07, 2008 at 10:27 AM
DLG, Mass Effect isn't exclusive. Its also for the PC. Fable 2 will follow suit as Fable was ported to the PC. Too human will flop. The previews are horrendous. So, HAHA!

Wait...Was this an article? I mean...Really. I went up to blow my nose and by the time I came back it was over.
This isn't a blog. Learn to write.
Posted By: EyePawd (Guest) on July 07, 2008 at 11:19 AM
I don't get why people say "Console X is better than Console Y". If people just did a little homework, found a system that had the games they would enjoy, bought it and enjoyed it why should we care?
For example, Dreamcast ended up being a failure but does that discredit everyone who bought one? If they bought it, had fun with it then more power to them.
Same thing here, buy the system you'll have fun with and live your life.

"However, I will call a game out that doesn't really evolve the series at all. Hell, I will call out Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony when they claim that "this game" is best ever (and it just provides recycled themes from other games in that genre)."
How is it you call MGS4 so amazing then? Talk about "recycled themes" LOL
You're such a fanboy you even had to take a shot at the 360 WHILE you were claiming not to be a fanboy. Maybe you just dont realize it but if so that would be pretty sad.
Posted By: LOL (Guest) on July 07, 2008 at 12:30 PM
I agree with this article. Fanboys are idiots. If you want to play one console, good for you. Just don't act as if it's superior to anything else ever created.
"Your point is lost....since I own all three systems, I play all three systems, and I enjoy all three systems, your logic is flawed, at best."
What are you talking about? Did you read anything at all?
"Wait...Was this an article? I mean...Really. I went up to blow my nose and by the time I came back it was over."
Wait... how could you read the article if you had left? That doesn't make sense.
Posted By: Brent (Guest) on July 07, 2008 at 12:56 PM
Ummmm...When did I take a shot at Halo 3? I guess that was supposed to be a joke. With a "name" like LOL, how can take them seriously? Brent, he quoted me, out of context, I read the article. Hell, he should ask Derek, Rod, Mark, Jordan, or Ramon to write his articles from now on. I feel they would do a better job. Hell, Ashish can have guys from the other sections improve upon this mess.
I call for a vote, Barack Obama OR John McCain as writer for the Checkpoint.
Posted By: David (Guest) on July 07, 2008 at 01:52 PM
Why do people mention Too Human? Are you bootlegging games again, John? How can you be sure it'll do anything promised? It really seems like this article can be summed up as "the pot calling the kettle black."
Posted By: David (Guest) on July 07, 2008 at 01:58 PM
Thank you John, it needed to be said. What the hell happened to being a fan of video games? I don't care if I have to take my old PS2 out of the closet to play a new game that I thought looked awesome. Who really gives a piss what system a game is on... An individual game is in no way a testament to the machine it is played on, it is a testament to the team that designed the game, and their ability to use said system to the best of its ability.
If Kojima would have developed MGS4 exclusively on the Xbox, would Snake still call it a truly magnificent game? Or would Kojima become an xbox stooge like Itagaki supposedly is? I have a friend who bought a copy of MGS4 and then borrowed a PS3 to play the game. So again I argue that the game is important, not the system it is available on. Exclusives suck! Doing away with exclusives, even though I know it is impossible, would be the absolute best thing for gamers as a whole. It's a damn shame that we all can't enjoy the same gaming goodness with out shelling out thousands of dollars for multiple systems.
David, just because you own all three systems, does not invalidate John's points. What it does do is show that he is right, because you think simply you owning all three systems, his views and logic on fanboys is flawed.
You own all three systems, and claim you call out all three companies, but I've only ever seen you comment on the RROD, or other Microsoft problems.
As a matter of fact, I just read in the comments of another article, where someone questioned where home was, or when it was coming, and David said... something to the effect of "Where is Alan Wake?" That to me sounds like you are diverting the attention to a different console, so you may own all 3 systems, but don't sit there and act like you show no bias to any one system.
Posted By: Toddo (Guest) on July 07, 2008 at 02:32 PM
"Ummmm...When did I take a shot at Halo 3?"
I didn't say you did. I said you took a shot at the 360. It's like you HAVE to do that every time someone says something negative about the PS3. You can't help yourself.

David said:
"Why do people mention Too Human? Are you bootlegging games again, John? How can you be sure it'll do anything promised?"
Excuse me.... Is this coming from the same guy that was giving MGS4 a 10/10 before it's release? Even going so far as to say it will be the first game to deserve the 10/10 rating? I seem to remember you doing that Dave...
Posted By: Hater (Guest) on July 07, 2008 at 04:54 PM
I attack the 360.....HOW? By pulling out facts? The 16.4% is the lowest I've heard. If you don't know about that, you need to read more than ONE website.
About the comment? What did I actually say that was fanboyish? Hmmmm...Halo 3 WAS more of the same. Only Halo fanboys would dsagree. Hell, it seemed like they used the EXACT same character models from Halo 2...just add a LOT of HDR lighting to hide that fact.
Furthermore, the Xbox is/was a First Shooter console. Many of the best games on the system were first person shooters (there were exceptions of cours...like KOTOR 1, 2), and the 360 still has to kill public perception of it being a FPS first console.
There are exceptions (LO, BD, ME, NG2, etc), but most people really focus on the deluge of FPS on the console. Hell, a good 30% of the games I own for 360 are FPS (I have about 27 physical copies in total).
The developers are people as well. Most of all the really innovative titles are going to the Wii and the PS3 is system for everyone. That was Sony's platform for the PS1, PS2, and now it is going to the PS3. There are a multitude of games that are coming out for that system as well.
Ironic thing for me, it seems that the Japanese developers are having the easiest time using the PS3 specs (Infinity Ward is no slouch, though). Devil May Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc. are really showing what the system can do.
Good thing for me that Disgaea 3 is coming out in a month (as well as Madden). I may buy Madden for the PS3...I'll wait to see reviews on that game. I'm still a bit reluctant to pay-to-play online. Ya know?
If the 360 version is a lot better, I'm going to pick up that version. If it is a toss-up, I'm going to buy the PS3 version. On a side note, I'm getting Rock Band 2 for the 360. I already have Rock Band 1 and I want to carry over all my DL songs. :-D
Posted By: David (Guest) on July 07, 2008 at 04:59 PM
I'm pretty loyal only to Nintendo but for a reason. Back in the day, I owned a Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. I never played anything I enjoyed on the Sega.
Playstation came around and there was a game or two. But nothing that justified the purchase price of the console.
Now, I'm old and married (read broke). So, I can can afford only one system. Thank God the one I can afford is the one I've always enjoyed the most.
Sure, there is awesome looking stuff out there on other systems. But I'll never be able to afford it. So, I'll keep playing with my wiimote.
Posted By: David (Guest) on July 07, 2008 at 05:00 PM
Really, no good can come of even mentioning a console war. We're all trapped into our pampered lives that the only excitement we can brew up is to dig deep trenches of loyalty and isolation and conjure a shallow war. It's video games (and multi-media support but mostly video games). Lighten up. You don't need to justify your purchase. You don't need to belittle people who didn't make the same choice as you.
Everytime this console nonsense pops up, it gives me flashbacks to elementary school where we ended up arguing who's super soaker could do more rather then ... you know, fire them.
Posted By: AE (Guest) on July 07, 2008 at 05:09 PM
Did I say it was 10/10 prior to release? Did I say its score should be 10 out of 10? Is your memory a bit hazy, Hater?

Yup...and this generation is not going to be ANY different. The Wii is cleaning house again. The best the Microsoft can hope....is a second place finish.

Microsoft will be 3rd. thbe PS3 surge can't be held back anymore. I want M$ to get the hell away from the gaming industry as their ethics (such as buying exclusives and buying developers) sicken me and most true gamers

"I want M$ to get the hell away from the gaming industry as their ethics (such as buying exclusives and buying developers) sicken me and most true gamers"
Kind of strange that you'd support Sony then, as they also buy exclusives and developers. Over the years they've actually bought more developers than Microsoft has, with rumours that Ready At Dawn is the next purchase.
But don't let actual fact stand in your way.
Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered) on July 07, 2008 at 09:47 PM
Sorry Rod. Its was either David Reeves or Jack Tretton who said that Sony does not need to buy exclusives (unlike M$), the developers come to them as a sign of mutual respect and willingness to actually make games for Sony's consoles.
Posted By: Snake211 (Guest) on July 07, 2008 at 10:06 PM
Maybe you don't remember how they got people to switch from Nintendo to the PS1, but other people do. There was more than the disc format and Nintendo's strict policies at play - they bought themselves an awful lot of exclusives. They do the same co-op marketing arrangements and lower licensing fees that Microsoft does - they just don't choose to call that 'buying' an exclusive.
Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered) on July 07, 2008 at 11:23 PM
Snake, you talk about Too Human being a flop after all the hype, and you act like that only happens to the 360. Well...**coughLairsuckedcough**
Posted By: Drew Robbins (Guest) on July 08, 2008 at 10:22 AM
My memory is not hazy at all, and I cared enough to bother I could look through the numerous beyond the reports. I bet I could find it. But it's not that big of a deal to me. Just found it funny that someone anticipating a game not on PS3 got under your skin so much. Admit it Dave, you were just as psyched about an untested MGS title as some folks are getting about Too Human. Everyone heard you talking the greatness of MGS even before it's release... Are you denying this? Is your brain a little hazy dave? I love the way you twist and turn what you say.
Hell your first comment here is how you own all 3 systems, and then a comment further down the way says you are a nintendo fan, because that is the system you own... Which is it Dave? and if your loyalty is to Nintendo, because that is what you could afford, how do you have all 3 systems? How do you even know how good MGS is?
Posted By: Hater (Guest) on July 08, 2008 at 11:02 AM
How can I have all three systems? I do...and more. I have a Nintendo Wii, Nintendo Gamecube, Nintendo 64, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Gameboy Advance SP, PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, Xbox 360, Xbox, and about....ohhhh...260+ games.
Now, how can I afford that? Hmmmm...oh yeah! I have a job, I didn't rush into marriage (like some other fools from my highschool), and I know how to save for what I want. I guess that is why I have all of that stuff.
Now, you bring up a comment about me liking Nintendo? Well, I have NEVER had a problem with Nintendo. The extent of my problems was blowing into a cartridge when I owned a NES.
About MGS, there is not a developer, in my opinion, that can create the type of games that Kojima Productions produce. Now, that is the same as saying a Shigeru Miyamoto produced Mario game is going to rock.
For Miyamoto, it is the Mario series. For Kojima, it is the Metal Gear series. Hell, I could mention Will Wright and Sim (insert term here)...and that would be the same idea. There are some designers with that Midas touch. Those are the three best examples that pop from the top of my head.
My friend, you lack faith in the abilities of some people. Are you projecting your own problems onto Kojima, Sony, etc? This would be very fascinating to find out.
Posted By: David (Guest) on July 08, 2008 at 04:46 PM
First David said on July 7 at 12:29am: "Your point is lost....since I own all three systems, I play all three systems, and I enjoy all three systems, your logic is flawed, at best."
Then David said on July 7 at 5:00 pm: "Now, I'm old and married (read broke). So, I can can afford only one system. Thank God the one I can afford is the one I've always enjoyed the most.
Sure, there is awesome looking stuff out there on other systems. But I'll never be able to afford it. So, I'll keep playing with my wiimote.
So which is it fucker? and where the hell did you draw the conclusion that I lack faith in some peoples abilities? When did I question Kojima's abilities, or Miyamoto's for that fact? I haven't even mentioned Miyamoto's name. I just wondered allowed if MGS would get the same love from the fanboy Snake,(read: David R)if it would have been developed for the Xbox instead of the PS3.
But if you can point me to where I bad mouth Kojima's abilities, I will own up to it.
I'm just trying to figure out how you can own all three systems in one post, then later the same day, only have a Nintendo, because that is what you can afford... Then one day later, you all the sudden own 438 game systems, and 260+ games...
You are nothing but smoke and mirrors Dave, someone calls you out on a mistake, and you try to put words in their mouth and change the subject to something that the conversation wasn't even about. Get them looking left, then when they realize that is bullshit, try to get them to look right and see this whole other thing that Dave created. If you want to argue with me, thats fine, but at least make sure you call me out on shit I actually said. It's not that hard to do...

You're quoting me here? That is asinine. What is your IQ, honestly? Is it in single digits? Do you honestly think that there is only one person in this world with the name DAVID? Now, you think I'm married. *facepalm* Is your family tree a straight line?

"enjoy all three systems"
Did I say that I ONLY owned those three systems? AGAIN, you logic is very flawed. You fail to realize that there is more than one DAVID on this planet, your inability to understand the language we call english, and your arguments are formulated in a haphazrd fashion, you are in a bad way, son.

Well jackass it's a little convenient how you can post under so many different names when it serves you to do so, then all the sudden when someone catches that you act as if all the sudden there is more than one person posting under the name Dave. A little convenient that both responses to my last post are from "different" people, yet they come at almost the same time. Once again smoke and mirrors from Dave. Once again someone paints him into a corner, and he tries to change the focus, making it look as if someone else is the dumb one. Nice one Dave, and by constantly calling people dumb, what do you prove there neanderthal? Oh yeah, I can't win an argument, so I will just try to make this guy look dumb. Go away Dave, for the love of all things good in the world, go away!

All these people are one person? Right....You sound like you're a bit paranoid. You may want to go check with a psychiatrist about that. :-/ There should be multiple medications that can treat your possible condition. Good thing for you, doctors do not use electro-shock therapy.

John,

It's kind of funny that someone who said they always put their name to what they say continually pops up as Dave, David, David Redkey (Registered), and random guest-based names also apparently has a login as Guest#6997 (Registered).
Are there REALLY four or five guys, all named Dave, who say the same things - often at the same time? That seems like a bit of a stretch.

Have I EVVVVVEEEEEEERRRRRR in my 26 years of existence claimed I was married? I like....No! I love sex with woman. I have roughly 40 notches "on my bed post" over a three year period...Why in blue hell would I ever say I was married? If you get old enough- Rod, your father should teach you about the birds and the bees.
Posted By: David (Guest) on July 10, 2008 at 04:13 PM
Thanks Rod, I'm glad someone agrees with me about all the Daves being the same, just trying to show different angles of the same argument. I need to see a shrink, Why? Because I think that all of the similarly written, similarly timed, similar views seem to always pop up surrounding the Dave posts? And how the fuck does that make me paranoid? Yeah I am worried that the Daves are gonna track me down and hurt me... Ohhh the paranoia.... AHHH!
You know what type of people "keep track" of the notches on their bedpost? The kind that lie about the number of notches on their bedpost. And what does you being married or not have to do with Rod knowing about the birds and the bees? Oh yeah, someone called you out again, so you have to throw up your smoke and mirrors. "Look, Rod don't know about Sex!" "Xbox has RROD!!!" For once why don't you try to respond to something with out using your typical smoke and mirrors? Try addressing the situation, and leaving it at that. Are you capable of doing that Dave? Is it possible to have a conversation with Dave about a chicken salad, and disagree with him, without him bringing up the Xbox 360 RROD tired ass argument?
I'd be willing to bet his next response is something to the effect of "how is it a tired argument, when it is still happening?" Well Dave I will answer that for you right here. 19million xbox 360's sold worldwide.... unless they all contracted the RROD at the same time, it will be a while before all the the original run 360's are out of circulation, right? They have to break before they can be fixed dumbass. And if there are 158 different Daves on this site, why don't you save yourself a headache of being confused with everyone else by simply signing in before you post your drivel? problem solved. Or here is an even better solution. Just go away!

Whine, whine, whine, whine…:-D I feel like McCain’s economic advisor, Mr. Gramm. Why in God’s name would I do anything that you want? Really? I need to tell you to keep you from becoming confused: You are nothing to me. You are a nobody, a nothing, and out of God’s good graces, I acknowledged your existence. You should not think more of yourself. It is not very becoming…
Posted By: David Redkey (Registered) on July 11, 2008 at 01:50 AM
So now you think you are doing me a favor by showing me any recognition? And I need to not think more of myself? Wow... Thats like the pot calling the Kettle black... You think you are doing the people you respond to a favor by acknowledging them, and you act as if I think to highly of myself... I take that back, that is not the pot calling the kettle black, that is the fucking moron calling the kettle blue. If you only practiced a small portion of the bullshit you try to preach we would all be better off. Face it Dave, apparently registering would save you a big headache as well, them we wouldn't have all these supposed imposter "Daves" running around. You would not get accused of writing their similarly sounding, similar in view, similarly typed, similarly shallow posts, now would you? So now lets hear your 3 rings of death, hater must have ridden the short bus response.. I know it is coming.

*Yawn*
You remind me of the people that thought the world was flat, the earth was the center of the universe, God created us in a day, etc. Unfortunately for you, the similarities between a new children'ss toy and you are quite striking (i.e. you are as borrowing as hell). If you think like unintelligent, inbred swine that is your problem. I've done my duty.
I've tried to teach a caveman fire, but he only thinks the gods grant his request; so, I wlll let you continue on your path. From this point forever, I'll let you live your narrow-minded view and I'll will no longer acknowledge your insignificant life. You bore me, and I'm putting you back on the toy shelf.
If you cannot follow, I'm no longer going to acknowledge your viewpoint. You are background noise. In short, you are my CMB (cosmic microwave background), and I will not longer refer to anything. You will be ignored from this point forward. My apologies if you though you had any say in this matter.

OH NO!! David is going to ignore me... That is not how I expected you to react to someone putting you in your place Dave. My world is now going to come to an end. I don't have to worry about some holier than though, I know it all, asshole responding to me. Oh darn... Now if I can just get you to stop posting in general, my work will be complete. Funny how you throw out how I bore you, and whatnot. I seem to remember someone telling you something along the same lines... Oh yeah that was me.
