B3yond the Report 07.15.08
Posted by Mark Salmela on 07.15.2008

EDIT: Sony E3 Conference thoughts are now live, check them out here.

Holy crap has it been a busy two weeks for yours truly. And at the busiest time of the year for a gamer as well. Hey, I missed a night at the casino to write this column, so screw you guys for saving me from losing a bunch of money.

But let's be serious here, you're not here to listen to my bitch and moan about my personal life. You're here because it's E mother f*cking 3! Ok, maybe that's a little too hyped *after all we already have firmware 2.40, we PS3 fans are good to go!* but this is a once a year event that we at the B3yond team don't want to pass by. Now seeing as this column goes live every Monday at 11 pm Eastern, Sony's press conference is literally only 12 hours away *give or take, depending on those dammed Nintendophiles*, so rather than make you guys wait a full week, yours truly will be back Tuesday afternoon *July 15* for a *near* live analysis of Sony's E3 press conference. Trust me, Sony always provides the best conference at E3, and you won't want to miss my thoughts on the grand press conference. I believe Ramon or someone will be posting live thoughts of the press conference, but I will be back about an hour after Sony's conference, so make sure to catch both *which means around 3 or 4 PM Eastern on July 15 as long as someone from 411 can approve and post the article on time*.

Besides tomorrow's *July 15th* column covering Sony's news report, check back here again Thursday night *technically Friday morning* for another special edition of B3yond the Report. E3 is such a big event, I'm posting 3 news columns in one week! And the best part of all this, it's FREE! Take that IGN Insider. Sure, I won't provide a live video feed to the conference *hell I won't even be at the conference*, but that won't stop me from being a one-shop Sony guru. With all that out of the way, as long as you've gone through the trouble of clicking my article, I might as well do what I do best!

It's time for the King to take back his thrown…

Truly Christmas in July, it's an E3 edition of B3yond the News of the Week~!

Dateline Crisis: The 2.40 fiasco

My first PS3. I still love it too.

After the millions and millions of deaths in Sony land, help has finally arrived in the form of firmware 2.41. By millions and millions, I mean less than a thousand *though no official statistics have been released*, and by deaths I mean bricked PS3's, and by Sony land I mean Sony land *or the world, your choice*.

While a certain number of people had their PS3's bricked after downloading PS3 firmware 2.40 last week Sony has taken PS3 firmware 2.40 off the market and replaced it with the much safer PS3 firmware 2.41. While no one has figured out why PS3's were bricking *I've heard numerous theories and all have been debunked*, thankfully it was an incredibly small number and the problem has been averted. In even better news, if you were one of the unlucky few, Sony has offered to fix your PS3 for free. So all is right with the world. At least it would be if any game actually supported in-game custom soundtracks *from using the new firmware, not including any that previously supported it*. With that said, let's all get back to collecting Trophies in Super Star Dust HD, and anticipating the inevitable release of Pixel Junk Eden next month!

This is my private collection of PS3s, not including my two PS3 dev kits. Thanks Sony!

Big announcement for Final Fantasy 7 looming?

Well, well, well, if it isn't the annual rumors of a Final Fantasy 7 remake? According to Square Enix character designer Tetsuya Nomura a big announcement for Final Fantasy fans is on the way. If Nomura is to be believed, this announcement will come at the same time as the release date announcement of Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children Complete. Taken from a rough translation:

The Japanese release date [for FF7ACC] has been decided, but it will have to wait (probably to the event DKΣ3713 in early August) so that it is unveiled. Nomura also notes that a big announcement that should accompany the release date, without giving more details.

While some people were quick to point out that this will be the time when Square finally announces a FF7 remake for the PS3, I'm not so sure. A FF7 remake would mean big bucks for Square Enix *who needs it pretty badly I hear*, but as far as I know most of the Square teams are pretty busy right now, especially with Final Fantasy 13 and Final Fantasy Versus 13. That's not to say it can't happen *I think gamers around the world would explode if it did*, but I just can't imagine Square announcing 3 Final Fantasy games as once *as far as I know the cell phone version of FF13 is cancelled*. Square's denied an FF7 remake so many times that I'm starting to believe it will never happen. Anyways, big news for Final Fantasy will be coming at either E3 this week or at the Final Fantasy event in early August, so be sure to stick around for updates.

Millions of boxers could be ruined with one simple announcement.

First details on 007: Quantum of Solace

New details went up regarding 007: Quantum of Solace this week, including a video featuring gameplay of the upcoming video game. 007 QOS will be a first person shooter made by Treyarch *the same people as Call of Duty: World at War* and will be released this November for the PS3, 360, PC, Wii, PS2, and DS *sadly PSP owners get screwed*. 007 QOS will be made using the Call of Duty 4 engine, and will use cover mechanics similar to games like Gears of War and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. 007 QOS is not only a first person shooter, but there will be 3rd person elements as well, including shooting from behind cover as well as combat sequences that take place in 3rd person. The 007 QOS video game will take the best scenes from 007 Casino Royale as well as 007 Quantum of Solace and combine them for one awesome looking game. I am highly anticipating this one.

One thing that I haven't had the chance to talk about however is the release date of Call of Duty: World at War. As I mentioned earlier, 007 Quantum of Solace and Call of Duty: World at War are both being developed by Treyarch and are first person shooters using the Call of Duty 4 engine. Since both games basically appeal to the same audience, I can't honestly see Activision releasing both games this year. First off I don't know how big of a company Treyarch is but I can't imagine they could handle putting out two games in one year *especially within a month or two of each other*. Second, if they did manage to complete both games, they would be taking sales away from one another. Both games are first person shooters running on the COD4 engine, and I can't imagine Activision is looking to make competition for itself, especially when other high profile games such as Gears of War 2 and Resistance 2 will be launching. And since 007 Quantum of Solace HAS to be released when the movie comes out in November I honestly think Call of Duty: World at War will be released in 2009. I can't imagine Treyarch is big enough to make both FPS's and release them at the same time to virtually the same audience. If one has to be delayed it has to be Call of Duty: World at War. I'm thinking Activision might try to say both games will come out this year at E3 but I think that COD: World at War will end up getting pushed back to early 2009, just like Sony did for Killzone 2 *so it wouldn't compete with Resistance 2*.

Bond is a badass. Period.

Your final E3 preview

While I understand that by the time this column goes live E3 will already have been underway *Microsoft's press conference is Monday at noon*, I figured that I'd give a final E3 preview with a list of games for people to look out for. In case you missed my predictions for Sony's press conference tomorrow, go check them out here*. Be aware that the majority of this column was written on Sunday before E3 *sorry, I'll be working pretty much all Monday*, so this list might not be all that handy *and some of today's news may be outdated*. Also be aware that this is just a short list I put together, and is far from a complete list of games that will be at E3. Also, I only included games 100% confirmed to be at E3 *they must also be for PS3* so that explains the lack of games like Tekken 6 and Final Fantasy 13. With that said: here's a list of games confirmed to be at E3 that you guys should look out for *for the PS3*.

Baja: Edge of Control – Racing game by THQ.
Bionic Commando – Lots of new details and enemies.
BioShock – The 360 hit finally comes to the PS3.
Borderlands - RPG from Gearbox.
Buzz: Quiz TV – User created Quizzes? Hell yeah!
Dark Void – I don't know much about it but everyone says it'll be awesome.
DC Universe – PS3 MMO by SOE.
Fallout 3 - Enough said!
Flock - I have no idea what this PSN/XBLA puzzle game is about.
Free Realms – PS3 MMO by SOE.
God of War 3 – Hell yeah!
inFamous - I expect a big showing for this game.
Killzone 2 – Every year since 2005!
Madden 09 – The series that won't die.
Mega Man 9 – 8-bit awesomeness.
Mercenaries 2 - probably a playable demo of the upcoming sandbox title.
Mirror's Edge - The first person action game from DICE that looks awesome.
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe – 2 new characters will be unveiled.
Monster Madness: Grave Digger – 360 game ported to PS3.
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift – The first Motorstorm was awesome and I can't wait for the sequel.
Pixel Junk Eden – The next game to carry PS3 Trophies, looks awesome.
Project Origin – Sequel to FEAR. Could be awesome.
Resident Evil 5 – Oh hell yeah!
Resistance 2 – The big PS3 exclusive FPS this holiday season
Siren: Blood Curse – Downloadable PSN game.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed – Action title by LucasArts, looks pretty cool.
StormRise – I honestly know nothing about this game.
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix – Eye candy.
Street Fighter IV – Final arcade code will be at E3.
SOCOM Confrontation – Another PS3 title I expect to have a big showing.
The Agency – PS3 MMO by SOE.
The Last Remnant – Sure it may be released on the 360 first, but as far as I know the title will be coming to the PS3 as well eventually.
This is Vegas – Action game by Midway
WWE Smackdown 2009 – More wrestling!

Sony PlayStation Store update for the week of July 10

Well color me surprised, the pre E3 PlayStation Store update was actually quite good. I was expecting to see next to nothing in terms of a PlayStation Store update this week, as I thought that Sony would hold off on all of its big updates until next week. Thankfully I was wrong, and the PlayStation Store received a handful of goodies this week including a bunch of new demos. This week demos for Monster Madness: Grave Danger, Wall-E, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, and Siren: Blood Curse went up on the PlayStation Store. I highly recommend users check out the demos for Monster Madness and Siren, since both have the potential to be good *although I wasn't too fond of the 360 version of Monster Madness*.

Besides the 4 demos, a bunch of trailers for the PS Store went up including trailers for Siren: Blood Curse and SOCOM Confrontation. And finally, oh god dammed finally, Rock Band ACTUALLY PUT UP GOOD SONGS FOR DOWNLOAD! Holy shit, it's a god dammed miracle. Snow (Hey Oh) and Tell me Baby by the Red Hot Chili Peppers are good songs that I actually recommend people pick up. Does Rock Band have the balls to have two awesome weeks in a row? Probably not. But check out next week to find out…

B3yond the Tabloids!

Media Molecule has confirmed that Little Big Planet is currently in Beta and will make its expected September/October release date. Many were questioning as to whether or not there would be a Beta at all but rest assured there are plenty of people hard at work to make sure Little Big Planet is the best game it could be. Hell, maybe some of the levels created by the Beta testers will be included in the full game? Any listeners want to admit to being in the Beta and make a B3yond the Report level? Please?

Hurray, it's time for more lawsuits! This time Konami is suing Harmonix and Viacom over their Rock Band instruments, claiming that they filed for patents over similar looking products back in 2002. Konami is looking for lots of cash as well as an order to stop violating their patent over musical instruments. While I normally wouldn't care at all, I actually do hope that these companies somehow both sue each other, lose millions of dollars, and are forced to stop making music rhythm games. Hell I need my own TV show like Judge Judy. You'd see a lot of franchises finally put off to pasture. EA Sports, I'm looking at you buddy.

It's alive! Activision and Blizzard have received the go-ahead and finished the paper to finalize their merger. EA is no longer the biggest third party publisher and all is right in the world. Actually, this sucks because the fewer publishers there are the worse off the industry is. At this rate we're going to have less than 10 video game publishers, and that's not a good thing.

Jade Raymond is apparently back in the news and ready to show off her new game. Jade Raymond if you don't remember is the girl responsible for building up so much hype for Assassin's Creed. Honestly I don't really care for her *her games suck* and I think that the only reason she's in the position she's in is because she's hot, but that's basically how I got here. I kid, but honestly Jade's apparently going to be showing off her game "I am Alive" as E3 and I'm sure people will care more about Jade then her game. Let's hope there are no goofy twists for the sake of having a twist like in Assassin's Creed. And hopefully in Assassin's Creed 2 you find out you were a guy in the past dreaming about being in the future going to the past. Because that would be awesome!

Cliffy B. sure loves attention doesn't he? First he claims that MGS4's use of "passive entertainment" is on the way out, but now he says that he's a huge fan of Kojima and that MGS4's cut scenes are "phenomenal". Oh well, Cliffy B. can get all the attention he wants, but he has yet to make a game I would consider "phenomenal".

While rumors were coming in that Soul Calibur 4 would have a whopping 6.7 GB install on the PS3, Namco has officially confirmed that the install size will only be 2.85 GB, which isn't bad at all. That's not to say that I'm ok with mandatory installs, but 6.7 GB would have been ridiculous. I'm still undecided as to whether or not I'm going to pick of SC4, I think I'm going to have to wait for a few reviews first.

The ESRB has officially rated a new Ratchet game titles Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty for the PlayStation 3. While it is not known whether or not Quest for Booty will be an expansion pack to Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, a PSN title, or a brand new PS3 disc game I am interested to find out. I mentioned that Quest for Booty could be a PSN title because there were rumors in February that a Ratchet and Clank PSN title would be coming from Insomniac. Either way we'll probably find out at E3 what "Quest for Booty" is *how I avoided the obvious sex joke there is beyond me*.

A couple of updates went live for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots this past week. First off, a new song for MGS4 titled "Battle of Highland" went up in the extras section. It definitely has a more ethnic tone and I think it sounds pretty cool while playing in South America *act 2*. Also, a new mode called "Team Stealth" went up where an entire team can use OctoCamo versus just one player in previous modes. Also, hosts now have the option to make the game head-shot only, where making a kill using a method other than a head-shot will actually penalize your team instead of help.

1942: Joint Strike will officially be released on the PlayStation Network on July 24 *one day after the XBLA release*. 1942 is a top-down classic arcade shooter that is a lot like Raiden. While I can't say for certain, I'd be willing to bet that the game will be awesome. So far Capcom has done an awesome job remaking classic arcade games for XBLA and PSN.

Gamers rejoice! After previous denials that Mega Man 9 would be coming to XBLA and PSN, Capcom has finally confirmed that Mega Man 9 will be coming to the PSN, XBLA, and WiiWare! This will be the first game coming to all 3 download services, and I can't wait for some 8-bit action!

B3yond the Cinema!

Here's the gameplay debut trailer for James Bond: Quantum of Solace. So far it looks pretty cool, I can't wait for the November release.

Here's the trailer for Mortal Kombat vs. DC. So far it's looking like it could have potential. It better have The Joker as a playable character though!

Here's the trailer for Project Origin, screw Alma.

Here's the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Be aware the trailer gives away a lot of details for the game, almost too much…

Thoughts on Microsoft's Press Conference!

Well I found a little extra time so I thought I'd add in my thoughts on Microsoft's E3 Press conference.

The conference started out just how I thought, with several multiplatform games like Fallout 3 and Resident Evil 5 on display *both games appeared to be running with several glitches, definitely alpha versions*. The conference kicked up a little with Fable 2 and Gears of War 2, with a decent showing for each game *Fable 2 should have showed more*.

Microsoft definitely needed to announce a "reboot" for the Dash board, but I'm not so sure if doing it in a "Mii too"/"Home" rip-off was the way to do it. Sure, it looks awesome, but coming from a guy who's been waiting for Home for years, I'll believe it when I see it.

My favorite part of the conference came from the several XBLA exclusives. I loved the announcement of Portal Still Alive, the new Galaga, and the new Geometry Wars. I didn't care about the movies announcements, but the XBLA announcements were awesome.

Lips has no chance to compete with SingStar. Sorry, but Microsoft doesn't hold any ground in the music industry, and as far as I know, Sony is one of the biggest in the music industry. The movie game with the vision camera looked cool, although I think it'll be something that gets old really quickly.

I've already played Viva Pinata, so I have no idea why they keep re-announcing it and thinking people will care. Banjo 3 looked awesome, although since it's Rare I'll hold off until I see some reviews/demos.

Final Fantasy 13. Ouch. Sony, you fucked up. Period.

Ouch…

I didn't mind the other Square Enix games, as they didn't look like anything special *and only one of them was a 360 exclusive* but Sony fucked up losing FF13. I have no idea whether or not Versus 13 is coming to 360 as well or whether or not the 360 and PS3 versions of FF13 will launch simultaneously but Sony has a long day ahead of them tomorrow. I'm expecting something big from Sony to counteract the loss of FF13. Be sure to read my thoughts of Sony's conference tomorrow afternoon.

Sony is basically in the same spot that they were in 2 years ago when GTA4 was announced as a multiplatform title at E3 2006. Microsoft caught Sony off guard and they were forced to make a bunch of surprise "last minute" calls. They'll probably have to do it again this year. Hell, I think the chance of Sony announcing Team Ico's next project just increased ten fold. But be aware that each company ALWAYS keep a secret game in reserve in case the other has some "epic" announcement. Like Microsoft kept both Halo Wars and I'm sure another Halo-esc *Halo 4, Peter Jackson's Halo, IDK* in secret. Sony may hold back more than I want them to in case Microsoft is planning a "one-two" punch type thing and FF13 was only the first punch.

Overall Microsoft had a great showing *much better than I expected* and I am afraid for Sony, as they have a much harder battle in front of them than I expected.

Oh and hey, maybe Allan Wake was canceled after all. I've been wondering what ever happened to that game, and since Microsoft didn't say anything about it *hell, they didn't announce any impressive looking new ip's*, I think it might be canceled. EDIT: It appears as if Final Fantasy Versus 13 will remain a PS3 exclusive *which is the only one I really care about honestly*. Also, FF13 will be out in Japan first and will be out in Japan only for the PS3. Only Europe and NA will get a 360 port.

The One Man Water Cooler~!

With all of the E3 activities going on this week, I've decided to keep The One Man Water Cooler segment short this week. There's so much to see and write about that I'm only going to write a short piece about a few opinions/rumors that have been going around debating the state of E3.

Ever since E3 concluded in 2006 and the ESA announced that E3 would be undergoing "severe" changes, there have constantly been rumors that E3 would be cancelled. The games media especially loves to report on these rumors since pretty much every publication apparently hates E3. Popular news media outlets love to bitch about how "crowded" E3 is and how they never get to properly cover games because it's too "hectic". The news outlets are all for a plan that would involve no E3, but rather smaller events held by individual publications all throughout the summer. For example one week would be an all EA news conference while the next week would be all UbiSoft. Now while this is a great idea in theory, they forget the whole reason why we have E3. The gamers.

Sure, there are gamers *probably like people who read this column* who have no problem keeping up with the latest video games news on a weekly *sometimes even daily* basis. For those gamers this wouldn't be a problem. But here's the thing, the casual gamer has no idea what goes on in the video game industry besides E3. This might be stretching it a little, but E3 is basically the video game equivalent of the Superbowl. Gamers, both hardcore and casual alike gather together and read about all of the greatest games that are coming down the pipeline once a year at E3. Hell, you think your average gamer would know what Leipzig is? You bet your sorry ass they don't. There's only one time of the year that all gamers get together and learn about the video game industry, and that's at E3.

I honestly can't believe people haven't figured it out yet. E3 isn't about the developers, nor is E3 about the publications. E3 is about the gamers, and we cannot expect the average gamer to keep up with random conferences like "Ubidays". I don't care if IGN has to wait in line an extra 15 minutes to try out a demo of the latest Madden. It isn't about them. It's about the consumers and the people who give them a job by reading their website. E3 has always been about the gamers, and if we take away E3, the gamers will be the ones suffering. Yeah, it may cost developers a ton of money to attend E3, but don't they want to get their message out to the masses? Ubidays sure as hell isn't going to reach the masses, and neither is PlayStation Day or any other random video game conference. Sure, the Tokyo Game Show is a decent second, but it still doesn't compare to the spectacle that is E3. We need E3. We need E3 to continue to be the biggest event in the video game industry, and we need E3 to unite gamers around the world, across every platform, if only for one week. And yes, that was very cheesy.

B3yond the Mail!

To Outlaw (Guest): Yeah sorry again Outlaw for the lack of news on DC Universe. Thankfully you noticed my add-ons to the column last week. Sony confirmed that DC Universe will be at E3 this week, so expect to see more on this game on either my Friday column or next Tuesday *depending on when I can get news on what SOE is showing at E3*.

To Snake211 (Guest): "A scaled down B3yond column is still better than the other columns" Mwuahahaha… Thanks Snake, any comment that puts me on a higher pedestal than Joe Roche warms my little heart.

To John (Guest): You are right for the most part John, as I typically do not like games based off of anime franchises. Part has to do with I don't like most animes *the last one that I really liked was Yu-Yu-Hakusho* and the other part is the fact that most anime based games are mediocre. There's nothing special about DBZ or Naruto.

To Toddo (Registered): Assuming you know that the Pixel Junk game I originally loved was Pixel Junk Monsters *which was like Tower Defense, you can try out the free demo on the PSN*, the new Pixel Junk game is called Pixel Junk Eden. It's a 2D puzzle-platformer that has a very laid back feel and has some tight controls. While I haven't gone hands-on with the game, it does come out in August and will support Trophies as well as allow people to upload videos of themselves playing to Youtube. I'll have more info on the game after E3 *or at the latest next month when it comes out*. I love alternative style games, especially during summer months when I'm not constantly being bugged to play hardcore first person shooters.

To Toddo (Registered): Toddo, I'm not sure if you've figured it out yet, but 95% of the comments in my columns are all made by me under different guest names. Making arguments with myself is how I like to pass the time when I'm not playing video games.

As I said before I always read what you guys send me and I appreciate the comments, even if they're sometimes filled with hate. If you wanted a response to your comment and I didn't respond I apologize.

The 411mania Empire~!

The Full Circle by Joe Roche. Are you ready for war Mr. Roche? You're gonna get it tomorrow…
Nintendophiles by Theo Fraser. With Mega Man 9 going multiplatform, the list of Wii games that I'm hyped for is back to zero.
The PC Centric Extravaganza by Chris Evans. I feel bad for Chris, with Diablo 3 already announced, that's all the PC news you'll see until 2009! Besides the inevitable delay of Starcraft 2, of course.
The Select and Start News by Vincent Chiucchi.
The Negative Edge by Tommy Coloma. Good to see Tommy's keeping up with his monthly column…
The 10th Hour by Derek Robbins. Ok Derek, I was agreeing with your list of anticipated E3 games until you put Pikmin 3 as number 1. What the hell Derek? I thought you and I were cool?
Coming Attractions by Drew Robbins. Be sure to give "the new guy" a "warm welcome". Hell, he's already a better writer than Tommy, Joe, and Vince *although that's not saying anything*. I still attest however that Drew and Derek are the same person.

B3yond the Wallpaper!

Well I have a special treat for everyone, as I am here to present to you the official B3yond the Report wallpaper. I recently tricked all of my fellow 411games comrades into giving me a little description of themselves, and it has led to the next strike in my war against the other news writers. A huge thanks to B3yond the Super fan Eric for the submission, and without further adieu, here's the official B3yond the Report wallpaper.

Download the official B3yond the Wallpaper here. It's available in many awesome resolutions. Here's a downsized version of the wallpaper.

B3yond the Report for life!

Signing Off!

Well by the time this column goes live E3 will be well underway with the Microsoft press conference. Sorry if the column came off as rushed again, but I worked a full 40 hours this week and work another 32 hours this upcoming week, so it's been hard to sit down and write the column. I don't work tomorrow *Tuesday* however, so I will be around for the Sony press conference like I planned as well as the special Friday edition of B3yond the Report. With that said I'll see you guys tomorrow, hope you enjoyed the column. Cya in 1!

Good times… Great memories…

EDIT: Sony E3 Conference thoughts are now live, check them out here.

Love that video. I am glad that even though you are a Sony fan you aren't blinded by facts. Sony hasn't done a good job this time around and even forced me to buy a 360 when I like(hate) both Microsoft and Sony equally.
I now have a PS3 too but there doesn't seem much for me to get excited for in the future.

Right now, Little Big Planet is the only upcoming game I'm looking forward to for this year.
But I can name at least FIVE games I want for the 360 this year.

You are a fanboy fool if you don't see the addition of NBC/Universal and Netflix (through update) as a huge boon for 360 in casual households as well. Also Singstar doesn't need to be Sony. The fact that you will be able to load your OWN music off of an MP3 player or bought from XBL.
The dashboard update is not a Wii/Home (is Home real anyway?). It is clearly a work on the Vista operating system. Oh I forgot you hate Microsoft so you probably haven't ever used windows operating system or Vista for that matter.
Lastly FF13 on 360 is going to be great! HA!
Better luck next time!

In all respect to everyone. X-box has won. Better luck next time.

World at War has to come out this year - if it doesn't then their 'one CoD title per year' cycle will be totally thrown off!

Good column. I am preying for an amazing sony showing. I've been on the sony wagon for years now and I am not giving up on them yet.

Patterson,

I know you must live under a rock or something, but the Wii won the war in one year. The Wii is trouncing all the other systems. It has almost sold more systems than both competitiors COMBINED. The wii did it VERY quickly. Do you honestly think that the 360/PS3 can catch up to that?

Unfortunately, you can't count the chickens before they are hatched. We do not know the work Sony has in place. There conference is today. THEN we can have a bigger idea of what is going to happen.

Not too much from Sony I'm excited about, but Infamous got my attention when I saw "Sucker Punch" as the developer.

"I didn't care about the movies announcements"

That has to be one on the most telling statements in your whole column. While you might have not cared, most on Wall Street did. The Netflix announcement is huge. It is an exclusive deal and will put the 360 in the same category as the Apple TV box, Tivo, Cable On-Demand, and the white hot Roku box, which sold out in the first shipment.

The 360 is fast becoming an entertainment hub, taking it well beyond a simple console and beyond where the PS3 is positioned today. If the Netflix exclusive announcement holds true, then that truly is a game changer.

You still might say, yeah, but who cares, I play games. Well I will point to the FFXIII announcement. I think we are seeing the end of 3rd party exclusive titles. It makes no sense for publishers. They want to make money and ignoring an install base of millions makes about as much sense as setting money on fire.

Sony is betting their hand on a format, Blu Ray while Microsoft is betting their hand on a delivery method, a little thing called the internet. With the rapid expansion of HD deliver over the web, bands giving away whole albums over the web, and media companies building sites like Hulu to deliver content over the web (see a trend here?), I would venture to guess that Blu Ray will be the new Betamax. At least the same company created both formats, maybe they can announce a dual format player.

And before you call me a fanboy, I will admit, I am one. I love the console that has the best games, most entertainment value and lowest price point, and that is the 360.

YouTube: Were sorry, this video is no longer available. Wth!?!?

And I cant speak for everyone, but even though legal digital downloads have picked up tremendous momentum as of late, i still think most people download movies/tv etc off of p2p networks. (BTW; piracy is illegal .. but what do you guys do??) I just dont see the NBC/Universal/netflix thing as that big of a deal, it definetly wont convince people to buy a 360 over a ps3.

I believe Treyarch is also working on a new Spiderman game, possibly set to release for the holidays, so your idea about a delay to COD5 is very realistic, however I do not see Bond and COD appealing to the same crowd. Bond will be considered an action game first, not a shooter, and Bond will arguably be geared more towards casual gamers. That is my bet anyway... So a simultaneous release, while unlikely, is not completely out of the realm of possibility.

Loved the comment about you being all the posters, that cracked me up.

This is the first I have heard about FF13 now being on the 360, that kind of made my do a double take, I sure didn't see that coming. That has to hurt Sony's momentum... I'm curious as to what they will offer as a counter.

I am actually interested in Microsofts new dashbord. Sure it might be a slight ripoff of home, and mii's, but I have no problem with the consoles borrowing ideas from other consoles to make them better. It worked for Sony with the trophies, right?

I still love the way that even though this is a Sony-centric column, you are not afraid to give props to other companies when they are deserved. Keep up the good work Mark!

Has their been any anime games that you've liked. Are you tempted to play the new Ultimate Ninja Storm at all?

Anime fans are probably one of the few genres that have been untapped fans when it comes to video games, do you see any system tapping into that market since Anime has become so popular in America. I know their is the Pokemon franchise and the occasional Naruto game but is there A: Any sense in tapping this market, and B: Who's likely to do it first?

Mark I don't think snake211 is going to like you as much after he reads this column. Especially after he just used his lips as toilet paper.
