The Hall of Shame 07.16.08: A Rant on Mega Man 9
Posted by Vincent Chiucchi on 07.16.2008
So over 10 years later, this is how we continue the classic series? I'm very disappointed.
This week's Hall of Shame is a personal rant rather then an induction.
For a while my friends tried to convince me that a Mega Man 9 had already existed. It was supposedly the game that finally ended the Mega Man story arc leading up to the X series. Whenever I tried to ask them of proof, they would usually give me a very weak excuse like it's only out in Japan or they heard it from a website. I think my friends were either getting their info from rumor sites or were confusing it for Mega Man & Bass. It had been over 10 years since Mega Man 8 came out, and it looked like Capcom would never make the ninth game in the series.
But then a few weeks ago, Capcom announced Mega Man 9, and I got very excited. A game I thought could only exist in my mind was going to become real. I felt like we were FINALLY going to get closure for the series and come full circle with the over-arching story. So when I finally got the details of what Mega Man 9 was going to be like, I was very disappointed. In fact, I'm almost pissed what Capcom is doing.
So far, here's all the details we know about this game: Mega Man 9 will be going back to the basics by playing and looking exactly like the NES Mega Man games did. The charge shot, sliding, and ducking have all been removed to make it feel like you're playing Mega Man 2, widely considered the best of the series. You'll have to fight eight robot masters (one of them being a woman, a first for the series), then defeat Wily. Rush, Beat, and Eddy will tag along to help you out. The game will be available for the three consoles downloadable services (WiiWare, XBLA, and PSN), will cost around $10, and is being developed by the same team that does the Mega Man ZX games for the DS.
So what problem do I have with this game? They're calling it Mega Man 9. So after more then ten years, this is the Mega Man 9 that Capcom is finally going to give us? They should be calling this game something else, because THIS GAME IS NOT MEGA MAN 9! Way to destroy everything I ever hoped this game would be Capcom.
This game is about as much Mega Man "9" as Mega Man & Bass. Some people called that the unofficial Mega Man 9, but it's more like Mega Man 8.5 rather then a direct sequel. This game claims to be the ninth game in the classic series, but I'm calling bullshit on that. The Mega Man 9 I know would be the one to finally end the 20XX saga and explain what exactly happened before the events of Mega Man X. The rest of the Mega Man series ended their stories (Mega Man X6* leading to Mega Man Zero leading to Mega Man ZX, Battle Network leading to Star Force), so why can't the classic series? Why are we left to assume everything from the given facts and having to use fan fiction at best? Did Mega Man ever really fight Zero? Did Zero ever actually get released before Mega Man X? Did anybody actually die at all? If I have to naturally assume what happens in the storyline, then it's not a very good story.
*I know the X series doesn't end with X6, but where do X7, X8, and Command Mission actually fit anyway?
Speaking of story, the one in this game is that Dr.Wily is accusing Dr.Light of being the villain, so Mega Man has to fight all these robot masters to prove his innocence. I'm going to take a wild guess at what happens: Dr.Light is actually innocent, Wily was behind the whole sham, and Mega Man will defeat Wily once again, but not kill him because he's all righteous and stuff. We'll probably get a message about how this war between reploids and humans will seemingly never end (because Capcom doesn't want it to) and unless this somehow ends with Mega Man fighting Bass or Zero at the end, or getting something that contributes to the X series, this storyline will be as non-canon as the Game Boy Mega Man games. The game's storyline is simplistic, but I don't mind games having a simplistic story, because at least you're not beating yourself over the head trying to figure out the plot. But they are calling this game Mega Man NINE, as in the one that comes after EIGHT, thus having to continue where that game's story left off. Are you going to throw out your entire story just to please the fans that prefer how the Mega Man games used to play? What about the people that are waiting to see Mega Man fight Zero, or have one last epic battle with Bass? Am I the only one that cares about this?
Also, I have a hard time taking this game as an official sequel considering the platform it's on. They're releasing for WW, XBLA, and PSN. The downloadable game services rather then the consoles themselves. A series as big as Mega Man and the one game many fans have been waiting years to see actually exist should not come out as just some cheap downloadable title! Look at Final Fantasy. That series has a game on the WiiWare, but it's more like a spin-off title. Imagine if Final Fantasy XIV was going to be available only as a downloadable title for the PlayStation Network. Would you really believe it was the next big Final Fantasy game? Unless you can download a 20GB game through the PSN, I doubt it.
You want to go back to the old school style of Mega Man? Go right ahead. I'm sure the game will be great to play. I think it's awesome that we have a new downloadable Mega Man title, and would love to see more classic series do the same. But don't tell me that it's Mega Man 9, because that would mean you're moving forward since Mega Man 8, but instead you're intentionally going backwards and are calling it Mega Man 9 just to make sure people are guaranteed to download this. So after Mega Man 9 gets released, what then? Will there be a Mega Man 10? Will that be the real continuation of the series or the same old school style of play? Are we EVER going to get official closure for Mega Man's story?
"Also, I have a hard time taking this game as an official sequel considering the platform it's on. They're releasing for WW, XBLA, and PSN. You want a crappy Mega Man 9 3-D game instead? That's the only way that Mega Man could come out as a manufactured game these days on the major consoles, because we rarely see manufactured 2-D games come out on the major consoles anymore. Even the Guilty Gear series, a series whose games were all 2-D fighters, in making the transition to 3-D this year. Probably the only exception is the upcoming "Wario Land: The Shake Dimension" for the Wii, which is a 2-D platformer.
The downloadable services are the only way that a 2-D game like a Mega Man game can get onto a major console these days, and Capcom is taking advantage of that by releasing revivals and sequels of their classic games. Personally, I would have liked to seen Mega Man 9 in 16-bit, because I really enjoyed Mega Man 7's art style and gameplay and I consider it to be one of the best original Mega Man games in the franchise.
Also, we all haven't played the game yet, so maybe something from Mega Man 9 will have ties to the Mega Man X series. And maybe they will make a final game that will answer all of our questions with the transition from the original Mega Man series to the Mega Man X saga, depending on if sales of Mega Man 9 are good.
You can't judge a book by its cover, which apparantly you did by writing this column. Don't get me wrong, this is one of my favorite columns here on 411Mania, as I like to read about the follies and screw-ups of the video game world, but this one has to be the worst out of all of them so far.

Vicent,
Your animosity towards Mega Man 9 seems to be a bit unfounded. You do not know how bad/good the game will be, that is something we will know in the future. You need more positive vibes, my friend.

Mega Man 64. Never again.

I kind of wish that we would get a bit of the story between X and the original series...but being a big time Mega Man fan, I'm just glad to be getting another addition to the series that doesn't involve cards or chips or whatever those Battle Network games use.

"What about the people that are waiting to see Mega Man fight Zero, or have one last epic battle with Bass? Am I the only one that cares about this?"
Yes.
They're target are people who played Megaman as kids and want a nostalgia kick, not the nine people who actually care about the megaman story.
It's like getting pissed Mario Galaxy didn't include the FLUDD pack because it's ignoring Sunshine's whole story. Come on now.

I think this is a really cool and neat idea, and I see no reason to NOT do it. I mean it will be a cheap way to make old school fans happy.

"The Mega Man 9 I know-"
And that's where your entire article falls apart because it is you bashing Capcom for not doing what you want them to do as if you own the series. That's their decision and only theirs. Maybe they're leaving it open-ended in case fans eat it up and want more? Who knows. You don't, we don't, only they do.

None of different rockman series are supposed to tie together I dont know why regular megaman would tie into X a different story line completely. You're looking for something that was thought up by someone different.

"What about the people that are waiting to see Mega Man fight Zero, or have one last epic battle with Bass? Am I the only one that cares about this?"
Yes you are. I'm sorry but I don't play Mega Man for a gripping story.

The posters here fail to see why you're upset. The next "big" Mega man game is a $10 download, that's almost sad. Like you've mention before, imagine the sequel to Final Fantasy 7 being a ten download sequel, it's almost a slap to the face.
The Mega Man franchise is gone, this game pretty much tells us to move on and check out other Capcom games.

MM9 is like a thank you to the fans for 20 years of Mega Man. I LOVE the old 8-Bit graphics for this game... like taking the series back to its roots!
Mega Man 10? Yes Please. I don't care what style it is (Except no MM64). Just some good old-fashioned platform gaming the way Platform gaming should be!

Yeah it seems like you are a typical new age gamer, focusing only on graphics. Other than that complaint it seems like you just have some weird unfounded hatred of this game before you have even played it. Way to make yourself look like a jackass.

"You want a crappy Mega Man 9 3-D game instead?"
You know what? I'm gonna answer YES to that question. I'm sick of people bashing 3D simply because it's 3D. At least they'd work hard on trying to deliver a new experience like they did with Legends, which if you don't recall, kicked universal amounts of butt. I sure don't want a sequel to a long running series to be a cheap download.
"it is you bashing Capcom for not doing what you want them to do as if you own the series."
Oh cry me a river. I guess you're the typical guy who accuses someone of being selfish for wanting a true sequel.
"Yeah it seems like you are a typical new age gamer, focusing only on graphics."
And you, the typical purist who accuses people of wanting shadings, considering he never complained about graphics. Looks like you're just searching for any way possible to discredit him imply because he bashed a game you are prolly considering will be GOTY.

I don't think anyone is bashing 3D, to be honest with you. I think it's that Mega Man Legnds was the only good jump into 3D Mega Man. They're not bashing 3D just because it's 3D. They're bashing it because CAPCOM hasn't exactly done well in bringing Mega Man into the third dimension.
In terms of story... I'm not exactly sure if anyone really cares much about the story in the Mega Man series. The series comes from a time when no one really cared about story and until the Playstation variants there was never a large focus on the story anyway. In terms of Mega Man fighting Zero... it's true Wily created Zero but what we don't know is when Zero was set to be activated. Remember, Dr. Light made Mega Man X but when X began his life it was centuries after Dr. Light had died. So we don't really know if Mega Man really HAS to fight Zero or not. It would be nice to see a more concrete link from the original series to Mega Man X... (as the Original Mega Man, Mega Man X and Mega Man Zero are connected), but it doesn't look like CAPCOM is going to do that. Perhaps they want fans to speculate and interpret for themselves what happened. After all, the Mega Man X series takes place 100 years in the future. Mega Man X6 didn't exactly explain what happened between the Mega Man X and Mega Man Zero series and Mega Man Zero doesn't touch much on it either.
In terms of it being a download. I can see why fans would be upset about that. I'm personally not too upset about it (although a handheld game on the PSP or DS would be nice), but I can understand why someone would be. After all, it's part of the main series.
On the other hand, while I didn't really see you complain about graphics, I will say that it seems Capcom is going for a nostalgic appeal. Maybe that's why its a download and not a Brand New game.
I suppose we'll see. Even if the story is what you say it is, there's nothing to suggest that it doesn't include a link to the Mega Man X series... or that it doesn't somehow tie in.
What I'm really curious about, is the fate of all of Mega Man's helpers. We know how Dr. Light met his end, but we don't really know about any of the other reploids. If anything, the original series needs closure, not a link. Then again, as many have stated, Mega Man isn't exactly a game you play for story.
Still, I understand how you feel. I'll download it, but I'll probably do that more for nostalgia (as long as it isn't as hard as the first Mega Man I think I'll be okay).
