The Checkpoint 07.21.08: The Top 5 Comic Based Games
Posted by John Curry on 07.21.2008
With the release of the highly anticipated Dark Knight film this past weekend, the Checkpoint takes a look at the top 5 games based on Comics.
After watching the phenomenal film, Dark Knight, on opening day I began to think about the best games that are based on comic books to ever come out. I was actually surprised how difficult it is to find good games that were based on comics. After looking I have selected MY top five games based on comics.
5. The Darkness
Many people may not be familiar with Top Cow's comic of the same name but this game was just awesome all over the place and although it is easy to play it is still enjoyable enough that you forget about the difficulty.
4. Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures
Finally a Conan game that incorporates the gore and the life of Conan. I have not fully completed this game but based on everything I have played to this point this is going to be one of the greatest games for the PC ever.
3. Spider Man 2
Of all the games that the mainstream characters from comics received Spider Man 2 was ultimately the best of the one character focused games. I absolutely enjoyed every aspect of this game and most importantly stayed true to the character and to the movie.
2. Marvel Ultimate Alliance
This game speaks for itself.
1. X-Men the Arcade Game
Originally created in 1963 by the legends of the comic book world Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, X-men are the epiphany of great comics. If you have ever played this game at the arcade you will know why this is the NUMBER ONE comic book based game of all time. I remember dropping quarter after quarter into this game with five other strangers and just playing nonstop. This game was so awesome you would give up a quarter to keep some stranger in the game. This game is one of the biggest reasons that arcade games should continue to exist.
None of Capcom's fighting games with Marvel are in there*, Mr. Curry. Why's that?
* eg. X-Men: Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes, Marvel Vs Capcom 2 (an all-time Dreamcast favourite of mine).

Curry,
I agree. It was nice that you mentioned X-Men the Arcade Game. However, that game is nothing more than a standard beat-em up. To name that number one, that shows that you didn't play the games WadeMcG mentioned. Are you trying to be controversial?

Nice list and all..but I'm not sure how to feel when you called Age of Conan one of the greatest games for the PC ever.
How can it be one of the greats when its not even 1st or 2nd best in its own genre.
But as I said, good list. X-Men was awesome.

seriously dude thats it? thats your article? no in depth game descriptions, no real outline at all? i was real interested when i saw the title cause your articles are usually top notch and provide actual insight but this was just a lazy dissapointment. I hate when 411 writers use clips instead of actual writing. You can do better Curry much much better.

Yeah, this article had potential but your list kind of sucks (#1 is hella-weak) and you really don't have anything insightful to say about the games listed. I could go to YouTube if I wanted to see the the freaking gameplay. Think you owe the readers of this site a redo and possibly getting someone with taste to co-write with you.

Spider-Man the arcade game - that was better than the X-men one, (Im not talking about spidey and the x-men in arcades revenge)

Hey guys sorry about this week. I'll do a more in depth version for next week. My wife is in the hospital so I am not exactly focused on writing at the moment. I will make it up to you next week.

I've gotta disagree with you on The Darkness. That game sucked out loud. Sure it was pretty, but the shooting was sub-par and the darkness powers were completely useless.
