The 10th Hour 08.29.08: Top Ten Sonic Games
Posted by Mark Salmela on 08.29.2008

Welcome back ladies and gentlemen to another edition of B3yond the…

Oh wait…

This isn't B3yond the Report. This is the 10th Hour…

Hey who would have guessed 2 months ago that Derek Robbins would be writing B3yond the Report and yours truly would be writing the 10th Hour? To be fair this is for one week only *well until the next time Derek needs a week off and I'm available*. For those who didn't hear Derek has been having internet troubles, and thus he's come to the hottest *and only* 411 games free agent. Sorry Dan Owens, you don't count.

But seriously, I've always wanted to try my hand at the 10th Hour. Derek does a great job every week and I didn't even realize until just now that I've actually been writing for 411 longer than Derek. Funny, I'd always thought he was one of the original 411 games writers but he didn't even get his start on the games section *sports*. Anyways, I looked at all of the 10th Hour's that Derek has written and I didn't see one listing the top ten Sonic games. Sooooo…. Being the Sonic fan that I am I figured I'd do the honors of giving a top ten Sonic list. That's not to say Derek *and many others* won't have their own list that'll differ from mine, but this isn't their column this week is it? Mwuahahaha…

So with that said, let's hop to it!

The top ten Sonic the Hedgehog games

10.) Sonic Rush Adventure: Taking the narrow victory for the number ten spot over its predecessor Sonic Rush is the 2007 DS sequel, Sonic Rush Adventure. While I had a hard time getting into the Sonic Advance games on the GBA, mainly because all of them involved holding right on the d-pad occasionally pressing A to jump until you win, the Rush titles have changed up the formula enough to hold my interest for more than 5 minutes. And hey, I actually liked that annoying little Sonic intro at the title screen. "La-La, La-La, a New Ad-Venture." Then again I grew to tolerate the soundtrack from Sonic R, so Sonic Rush Adventure could have been fingernails scratching a chalkboard and I would have been raving about how good it was. Any who while Sonic Rush doesn't hold a candle to the 16 bit-glory days, it sure as hell is better than anything we've seen on the current generation of consoles *insert joke of Sonic kissing a human here*.

Why does Sonic look so cocky on a jet ski?

9.) Sonic Adventure 2: In my opinion this was the last 3D Sonic game that was tolerable. I'm sorry, but Sonic Heroes was embarrassing. Honestly, my 7 year old niece is too cool to play Sonic Heroes. Sonic Adventure 2 basically expanded upon the gameplay set in Sonic Adventure 1, minus the retarded fishing levels. I guess the reason why this game isn't higher on the list has to do with the horrible treasure hunting levels, and the fact that it introduced one of the worst characters in the Sonic franchise, Shadow the Hedgehog. That's right haters, Shadow is a fucking loser. Honestly who thought we needed an emo hedgehog? The only clones of Sonic that I'll accept are Espio and Metal Sonic. Otherwise everyone else who is a hedgehog can go to hell. Shadow died at the end of Sonic Adventure 2, but naturally Sonic Team had to fuck it up and bring him back to life *or make a ton of clones of him, depending on which retarded storyline makes your brain hurt less*. And what purpose does Rouge the Bat serve? Did Sonic Team really think we would buy a Sonic game for the sex appeal?

"Hey what do you have there?" "I don't know… some game…. But check out the knockers on that bat!"

8.) Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine: Sure, it may not be a traditional Sonic game. And sure, it might even be a rip-off of Puyo Puyo, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a hell of a lot of fun! Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine was one of my favorite puzzle games ever, and god damn if it isn't my best puzzle game. I can fly through the entire game on the hardest difficulty and never lose. Eat that Sir Fuzzy-Logic! Plus it had Coconuts from the old Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, which is an added bonus. That dude was the shit! Also Scratch and Grounder were there, the original Robotnik goons.

Coconuts is better than you.

7.) Sonic Spinball: In my opinion the only pinball video game that's worth playing. Sonic Spinball is the perfect mix of platforming and playing pinball, which translated into an awesome game. While the last level was all sorts of bullshit *not to mention Robotnik was somehow 30 feet tall in this game*, I do recommend anyone who still plays their Genesis to check this game out if they already haven't. It's fun, challenging, and an idea I haven't seen duplicated well by anyone else *everything else is pretty much just pinball*.

That shark can eat my ass!

6.) Sonic the Hedgehog: The game that started it all. Sonic the Hedgehog was the game that took the Genesis to the top *until the SNES eventually surpassed it*, and set fire to the term "Blast processing". Sonic the Hedgehog was considered a technological marvel in the way Sonic would fly across the screen defeating the bad guys. Then again the Genesis games actually involved platforming, something the later games have forgotten. But Sonic the Hedgehog was the much needed mascot to Sega, as Alex the Kidd had failed to match the popularity of Mario. Sega was smart with their advertising campaign, calling Mario a fat and slow plumber while calling Sonic a cool and fast dude that would appeal to the "hip" crowd. Boy, remember when Sonic was known as a bad ass? That was around the same time that people actually liked Guns-N-Roses. Anyone remember "Sega does what Ninten-Don't"? Yeah, those were the days. And then they changed Dr. Robotnik to Dr. Eggman and Sonic lost all of his cool points… *and yes I know it's his original Japanese name, but that doesn't make it suck any less*.

The title screen that started it all

5.) Sonic and Knuckles: Be aware that add-on's like Sonic 3 and Knuckles are not being considered on this list, I'm taking every title as its own game. Any who Sonic and Knuckles was the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and added Knuckles as a playable character for the first time in a Sonic game. Playing as Knuckles actually changed the gameplay quite a bit, whereas playing as Tails barely changed anything outside of the ability to fly for a short time in the Genesis games*basically making the game easier*. Anyways Sonic and Knuckles was the last great Sonic game on the Genesis *fuck Sonic 3D Blast* and it tied up all of the story arches set by the previous two games *like the Death Egg*. Hell, the only question I still have is what the hell happened to Scrap Brain Zone? Does Robotnik still go there or did it blow up or something?

Knuckles had an awesome final boss.

4.) Sonic Adventure: When Mario made the transition to 3D with Super Mario 64 everyone on the Sega side waited to see how Sega would answer back with their mascot Sonic. Sadly, their first attempt, Sonic Xtreme, never saw the light of day, and fans such as myself would have to wait until 1999 with Sonic Adventure before Sonic would make his true debut in 3D. And boy did Sonic ever do it right. Sonic Adventure remains one of my favorite Sonic titles ever, and it's a game I still go back and play every now and again just to see what a good 3D Sonic game plays like. While Chaos may have been a bit lame *seriously a monster living in the Master Emerald?* I must admit he's cooler than Shadow *which isn't saying much*. Not to mention E101 was cool as shit, and actually provided for a decently sad ending *killing himself after killing his brother*. I honestly still don't know why Shadow gets to come back to life yet they leave Gamma dead? Any who Sega, start taking notes, because this is how a 3D Sonic game should play. And they didn't need a fucking werewolf to do it either.

Does that whale have any idea how much that 3 mile long boardwalk cost? And why exactly was it attacking Sonic anyways?

3.) Sonic the Hedgehog 3: Honestly deciding the top 3 was a really tough decision and I could see why someone would put any of the next three games as their number 1. For most people Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was the definition of a Sonic game, with near perfect controls, awesome sound, and kickass gameplay. Sure, there was no casino level, but a carnival level is almost as cool. Sonic 3 is one of the best selling Sonic games of all time, and it should be no question as to why. Besides some shady multiplayer *which I barely ever played*, the game was near perfect. Sonic doesn't need to be going 140 mph at all times to be fun, as it's the platforming that the original 3 contained mixed with the high velocity that made the games something special.

Holy crap Dr. Robotnik is burning down the rainforest!

2.) Sonic CD: Oh shit he's done it now! That's right, I did not vote Sonic CD as the greatest Sonic game of all time. Sure, traveling in time may be totally awesome, but the final boss was weak as hell! Not to mention most of the bosses were incredibly lame *one of the most important aspects in my opinion*, and could usually be beaten in a couple of hits. Any who that doesn't take away from the totally awesome soundtrack, the whacky and creative level designs, and the awesome gameplay that makes this game number one in most Sonic lover's hearts. It's too bad almost no one got to play this game, as the Sega CD was an abortion. Although to be honest I love my Sega CD, as it has some of the worst games of all times, and I love me some shity games *Night Trap for the win*.

Eh I wasn't too big on the animated opening and ending.

1.) Sonic the Hedgehog 2: I'm not going to lie. I may be a little bit biased. After all, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the first video game that I ever played. But that doesn't detract from the fact that I still consider if the best Sonic game of all time. I mean seriously, how many sequels actually surpassed their predecessor back in the early days? Super Mario Bros 2 *American version*? Mediocre. Zelda 2? Crappy… Sonic 2? Fucking incredible! The last boss of Sonic 2 is still one of my favorite boss fights in history, and the ending to Sonic 2 still kicks ass to this day. Did Mario ever fall out of Earth's atmosphere only to be caught on a plane flown by a two-tailed fox? I didn't think so? Every time I think of Sonic 2 a smile is put on my face, because I honestly can't think of one thing I don't love about it. Well there's the bottomless pit in Mystic Cave, but I can forgive one stupid pit. Any who I'm not alone with this opinion, as there's a group of people out there dedicated to recreating Sonic 2 in total HD. They're planning on releasing a tech demo next month, which I'll make sure is passed along to my fellow 411 readers when it's released. I don't see anyone out there recreating Sonic CD in HD, or anyone recreating Super Mario 3 in HD, so suck it! Any who this game is pure awesome, and if you don't love it you can eat my B3yond the asshole *I couldn't resist a pun, I mean come on!*.

Holy crap this will be awesome!

And a special tip to Sonic Team. Please please please pull a MegaMan 9 with Sonic! I'm serious! Dig up the old Sonic the Hedgehog engine for the Genesis and make a totally new Sonic game based off of it. I can guarantee that it'll be better than anything you could do now days. Plus how much money could it cost you to make anyways? I'd have to imagine the potential for profit even at $9.99 as a downloadable title is pretty good. Sega, you've already fucked up Sonic Unleashed, but you can still save yourself with a Sonic the Hedgehog 4!

Anyways sorry if the 10th Hour came off as rushed, but I didn't get the word from Derek that he needed a substitute until late Wednesday night. But that's ok Derek, it all turned out good in the end. And if Derek is still having troubles over the weekend, take a wild guess at who gets to do B3yond the Report this Tuesday *pending I have the time myself, I'm actually not 100% sure*. Any who onto random stuff…

Man have I fallen in love with Exiled on MTV. For those of you who don't know Exiled is a show where MTV takes all of those spoiled brats from My Sweet 16 and sends them to Africa. The opening quote of the show: "You need to experience the world as normal people do, so we're sending you to Africa". Fucking amazing!

Spoiled bitches crying for the win!

I mean seriously, I thought I missed out big time when P Diddy didn't sing at my sweet sixteen. Now I find out my Dad was supposed to sell me out for an MTV pay check? Damn… I guess I do have it bad. Although honestly didn't the girls know something was up when their Dad sat them down pissed off in a private room with a camera crew from MTV? While I still hate MTV, I do love watching spoiled girls who've never worked a day in their lives get what's coming to them.

Anyways, I've been played a lot of downloadable titles recently. The latest editions to my library include Geometry Wars 2, Braid, Galaga Legions, Castle Crashers, Bionic Commando Rearmed, The Last Guy, and of course Pixel Junk Eden. Geometry Wars 2 is a very fun game, which I'd actually recommend over Super Star Dust HD if you had to choose one over the other *I still think Super Star Dust is better than the original Geometry Wars though*. Braid is a very fun puzzle platformer, although I didn't cream my pants over it. And yeah, I know that I'm the bad guy, but that doesn't make it any better. If they're not going to care enough about the storyline to tell it in another way besides text books, then I'm not going to care enough to get excited. Awesome game, but not the perfect game some have been claiming it is.

Galaga Legions is also pretty good, although not up to the level that Pacman C.E. was. I still prefer the original Galaga. Bionic Commando Rearmed is pure awesomeness, and I definitely recommend it as a must buy *yeah you can't jump, that's what makes it different*. The Last Guy is pretty awesome, although I want to play it more before giving a solid recommendation. And we all know Pixel Junk Eden is awesome, although it gets extremely difficult in the final levels.

Oh Megaman 9, why must you tease me so?

The 411mania Empire~!

The Full Circle by Joe Roche. Pfft sure you're getting married Joe, married to Marcus Phoenix! Mwuahaha… In all seriousness, here's hoping your marriage is a happy one, and doesn't fall victim to the 3rd red lights of divorce *wait… that wasn't serious at all*.
Nintendophiles by Theo Fraser. Oh Theo, I've been gone for a few weeks now and yet there's still nothing interesting to talk about on the Nintendo side.
The PC Centric Extravaganza by Chris Evans.
The Select and Start News by Vincent Chiucchi.
What do you know… I finally write a column and Tommy Coloma goes mysteriously absent? Just like old times…
The Exploding Barrel Podcast by Aj and Mike Minotti. I've never actually heard of this podcast, but I hear they've got a great website, so go check it out!
Coming Attractions by Drew Robbins. Since I'm taking over for Derek, doesn't this make Drew my little brother for this week? Oh yeah Drew Salms, I can't wait to teach you how girls work…

Signing off!

Alright everyone, it's been fun, but it's time for me to go back to jail. Boy will my parole officer be pissed when he finds out I spent my one weekend off writing for 411mania. Any who Derek should be back by next Friday, but who knows which one of us will end up writing B3yond the Report for this upcoming Tuesday. I'll cya when I cya!

Totally agree with sonic 2 bein the best sonic game...after all its the only genesis game I ever played. It did kick much ass as I recall. Nintendo ruled my childhood.

Ah, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is also my favorite Sonic game, though I've never had the opportunity to play Sonic CD (I've played nearly all other Sonic games though). I sure as hell don't remember the graphics in Sonic 2 in that pic being THAT good. Was that a PC port? I currently have the Sonic Mega Collection for the GameCube and the graphics aren't updated there either, and I have Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles for the PC, also with the original graphics.

At first glance with the Sonic list, I thought you'd be Derek this week. Good job filling in, and thank goodness you left Sonic 3D off the list. I hated ice skating around in that abomination of a Sonic game.

A 2D Sonic 2 in HD? If it plays as well as it did 15 years ago, I'm there!
Even a new Sonic game with the old school Genesis engine would be cool, as long as they kept things simple: just Sonic, maybe Knuckles and/or Tails but no other protagonist characters. No Doppleganger Sonics or anything like that for the bad guys, either; just Dr. Robotnik and his robots trapping the forest animals.

Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is the best puzzler ever.

Yippee, yippee!, YIPPEE!, YIPPIEEEE!!!!,*bloink*...opponents screen fills with clear beans. Happy memories.

Truly loved Sonic Spinball, though I've never finished Sonic 3. I got stuck in the Carnival Level. I think you know exactly which part of the level I mean, I've NEVER gotten past it, it's the ONLY reason I still hold on to my Mega Drive 2. (I live in Asia)

Loser is me. I have not played Sonice 2. Actually, the only Sonic game I played was the original. >__

sonic unleashed isnt even out yet and the HATe is already started

Did you say Sonic R soundtrack?!

"Can you feel the sunshine...brightnin' up the day, won't you feel the sunshine, and forget about you painn.....

or how about...

"Livin' in the city - You know you have to survive. Livin' in the city - You've got to keep that dream alive"

or maybe even...

"Super Sonic racing, gotta keep your feet right off the ground..."

That is all I know. Heck yeah, my favorite awful game that I own. Maybe I should go back and install it.

Also, I actually manned up and used my credit card to get Bionic Commando, it emits high levels of awesome. Do you have any idea when that trophy patch is coming out?

Sonic Heroes was pretty good on Gamecube. On PS2, for whatever reason, it was an abomination. In fact, I played an early version of it at The Playstation Experience in London, and it was actually a lot more polished than the finished version.

Posted By: T.G. Corke (Registered)  on August 29, 2008 at 08:05 AM

I'll agree with the fact that Sonic is(and will always be) much cooler then Mario, and that Chaos was a little lame. However, I disagree with your earlier fact about Shadow being the worst character in the franchise. From what I've read on Wikipedia, he's the 2nd best Sonic character in the franchise(Sonic being no.1, of course). And, Rouge was brought in as part of the bad guys to challenge Knuckles in the treasure hunting department. The reason why she's still around is beyond me, but in all honestly it really doesn't bother me at all.

Posted By: Carlos(Guest) (Guest)  on August 29, 2008 at 08:24 AM

Good list, but I wouldn't have put Sonic 3 that high, and probably would've put Sonic & Knuckles in it's place. Sonic 3 was a little too easy and WAAAAAAAAY too short, and the ending was ten seconds (maybe less, I forget) of pure crap. You don't follow the type of ending Sonic 2 had with that. It was obvious that it was setting up for S&K, but I still say the fans got the shaft with it.

I've only played Sonic CD once, but I loved it and I've been trying to find a ROM ever since. Probably the best graphics ever for a side scrolling Soinc game (as to be expected).

And indeed, fuck Sonic 3D Blast.

Damn you Andy Critchell!!! That fuckin Bea Arthur is taking over 411!!

Nice throwback column there Mark. Sonic was fun, and so fast. although I will admit the last sonic game that I played was Sonic & Knuckles.

Posted By: Toddo (Guest)  on August 29, 2008 at 02:30 PM

Fantasssstic list. I would have put Sonic CD at number 1 though since you decided not to include Sonic and Knuckles with Sonic 3 locked in. I think outside of Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Sonic CD was THE definitive Sonic title.

Glad you went with 10th hour favorite Sonic. See Sega? We still love the guy...give us a good game, dammit!

Great job, Mark. I appreciate the short-notice fill in.

Yeah guys lol I thought everyone knew Sonic 3D Blast was crap?

I honestly consider Sonic 3D Blast to be in like the top 10 worst Sonic games. It had little to no redeeming qualities.

Drew Robbins, I'm sad to report that I also know the lyrics to two of the songs in Sonic R.

And no problem Derek. Like I said I can see why some would like Sonic CD a little more, but I guess I just have the bias of having Sonic 2 be my first video game.

Derek did you even notice the banner? Lol so much for Lucas...

Posted By: Guest#6442 (Guest)  on August 30, 2008 at 02:46 AM

Enjoyed reading the list even though I've never been a fan of Sonic. Writing "any who" every second paragraph is the only thing that brought it down.

Posted By: Snedpop (Guest)  on August 30, 2008 at 05:44 AM

This makes me want to go to my parents house and dig up my Genesis. That wacky hedgehog and super sonic antics! I miss cartridge games like I miss stocking caps with the balls on the top of them!

Posted By: BellSKA (Guest)  on August 30, 2008 at 12:23 PM

I agree, you said anywho like twenty infinity times. Also my only other complaint was that instead of writing about how each game was better as you moved down the list, you justified each higher item by running down the prior ones. . Example: In order to make your number 1 a justifyable pick you started off by running down your #2 pick. I prefer when someone starts off with for example number ten and why its great, and then saying that as great as it was, this is why nine was even better. Otherwise good column. The pics with subtitles was a nice touch.

Yup, yup. Sonic 2 was the very best of this amazing (while in 2D) series. I still play it to this day.

Posted By: Beeker (Guest)  on August 30, 2008 at 01:49 PM

lets not forget in sonic 2, if you plug in the 2nd controller, that person could control tails and never die.

Posted By: setobakura (Guest)  on August 30, 2008 at 02:15 PM

Lol sorry guys, I was too rushed on the writing the 10th hour and when I'm rushed I fall back on words like "any who" and "anyways" to lazily connect sentences.

Posted By: Mark Salmela (Registered)  on August 30, 2008 at 03:53 PM

I basically agree with this but I liked Sonic Adventure 2 more than the first game. It and Rush Adventure are the only Sonic games where the non-platforming parts were fun.

Also, I don't enjoy Sonic 2 that much anymore but that's probably because I've played it 20129190 times. (and have NEVER beaten the final boss)

shadow was emo?? thats news to me

Posted By: chris (Guest)  on August 31, 2008 at 01:29 AM

Decent list. Sonic 2 is the best by itself, but Sonic 3 with Knuckles is the the best all around. Shame it had to be on two cartridges.

Have you tried beating Sonic 2 as Knuckles? The final boss fight with Robotnik is nearly impossible because Knuckles doesn't jump as high as Sonic. It's quite a bitch.

I'll take another 2d Sonic game, though. I'm perfectly fine with that.

Posted By: G-Walla (Guest)  on August 31, 2008 at 01:39 AM

Why yes, as a matter of fact I have played and beaten Sonic 2 with Knuckles, and yes, it is a bitch. I found the whole game harder in general with Knuckles, including that last boss. Sadly I don't remember if Knuckles had a special/different ending other than what Sonic and Tails had.

I concur that Sonic 2 is the best of the series but this article really sucks, man.

Best pinball game on a console of all time has got to be Devil's Crush on the Turbografx-16, not Sonic Pinball.

Posted By: Paisa el Toro (Guest)  on August 31, 2008 at 12:47 PM

I wholeheartedly agree with Sonic 2 as the top spot, and to this day I wish that SEGA had taken the extra couple of months to let Sonic Team finish the now infamous "lost levels" of the game, like Hidden Palace, Wood Zone, and Genocide City. SEGA is so stupid for refusing to go retro with Sonic these days. Why not just make a few side-scrollers that can be downloaded on Xbox Live or WiiWare? What would be so hard about that? And, I have grave doubts about the quality of Sonic Unleashed. The last thing we fans wanted was a slow-moving hedgehog with stretchy arms.

I had Night Trap for the 3DO! HA!

Sonic 2 was the first game I ever played as well, and the first game I ever finished.

I remember the first time that I beat the boss on the second level, I was over the moon!

And trying to race the water up the moving stairs on that same second level was, and whenever I play, still is satisfying to do.

And trying to remember Metal Sonic's pattern, with only two lives left, no rings and no continues happened WAY too many times during the wee hours in the morning.

Easily the best sonic game ever.

And Sonic Adventure 2 deserves respect because, while a lot of the gameplay was broing (Rogue and Knuckles' missions were frustrating! Expecially the space and mine levels) Sonics, and too some extent Shadow's levels were satisfying enough to let that slide. And Tails' and Dr. Robotnik's (Fuck Eggman!) were surpisingly fun, too, with their battles against one another being a highlight. Add the mini games with the little animal things you raised (which you either liked or you didn't. And, if you were an aspiring breeder, it came with the added bonus of always being at the forefront of your mind during levels with the coloured tubes affecting your little creature things. A nice added complexity for those who wanted it. And those who don't? Then just don't do it!) The level designs were somewhat hit and miss, with some being a lot of fun, and others just being annoying. Though, being able to go back and play any previous level whenever you wanted (often to try and get that better grade) was a nice addition, and added a lot of longevity to the title.

Though, for me, the greatest point of the game was the story. Which has since been somewhat ruined. At the end of the story mode, a truly haunting video (at least for a Sonic game) is shown with Dr. Robotnik's grandfather, and is one of my favourite moments in video games. Though the voice acting might be bad (and down right annoing at times) the cinematography (for lack of a better word) is second to none, and bring the story to life a lot better than it should. Though, after Shadow's popularity when the title hit, Sega thought it was a good idea to bring him back and milk all of the cash out of his teets, and completely takes away from the perfect ending to this, in my opinion, underrated title. Though, admittedly, hindsight can make things seem alot better then they were.

And the song for the opening level was awesome.

"Any who that doesn't take away from the totally awesome soundtrack"

Which version of Sonic CD are we talking about? The Japan and US versions of Sonic CD had different soundtracks (and I'm sure that it was the Japan version's soundtrack that was preferred).

I enjoyed Sonic games both new and old. It depresses me when people bash them so much. I liked Sonic 2006, for instance. But I guess that won't change others' opinions.

In other words, it would be pretty cool if they remake the classic Sonic games in HD.

Even separated I would consider Sonic & Knuckles better than 2 by itself.

I think it has the best final boss, the best level design, and the best music of the 2D games.

I would consider S3&K one game, since that's how I almost always played it, but even by itself Sonic & Knuckles is excellent.
