411 Games Fact or Fiction 09.01.08: GTA IV's Downloadable Content, Square-Enix's Attempt to Acquire Tecmo, Finding a Boxing Game That Is Better Than Mike Tyson's Punchout, & More!
Posted by Tommy Coloma on 09.01.2008

Welcome to another edition of Fact or Fiction. This week Derek Robbins and Rod Oracheski check in to tell us what they think about some of today's most important video game news and issues.

About this week's participants:

Derek compiles The 10th Hour every week. In his latest column, he breaks down what he feels are the 10 finest NES games of all time.

Rod currently writes Achievement Unlocked. This week's column takes a look at the pace at which Achievements are doled out and how that can affect one's enjoyment of a game.

Let's go -

1. The downloadable content for GTA IV could be here as early as November or as late as January or February of next year. At this point, the release date is irrelevant as a large number of the gamers who were interested in the downloadable content have moved on to other games.

Derek Robbins: Fact

It doesn't even matter any more. Grand Theft Auto IV was a good game when it came out in May, but gamers have just moved on since its release. To be honest, I haven't even touched the game since I beat it and don't see myself doing it again even when the downloadables come out. Now, if they decided to throw in some nice story stuff to go along with the downloads, I would be all for that, but it appears they won't even do that. For this sort of thing, they HAD to be timely. An August release would have been great. November will hurt definitely (though it can be bolstered thanks to the holidays), but if they release it as late as January, why even bother releasing it?

Rod Oracheski: Fact

I suppose it depends just how big this DLC is. Like Derek said, if it adds in new storylines and is sizable, then maybe it doesn't matter that it's hitting this far after launch, but with all the new titles coming out this fall, Rockstar might have missed the boat here. Great game or not, eventually, gamers start looking around and wondering what else is out there.

Score: 1 for 1

2. A Square-Enix takeover of Tecmo will result in nothing but good things for both companies.

Derek Robbins: Fact

Tecmo hasn't been very good over the past several years. Actually, they've barely even been on my radar. Oh sure, they release fantastic games such as Ninja Gaiden, but for the most part, they appear to be struggling. Square, on the other hand, is one of the leading developers of games today, and if they were to lend some help to Tecmo, I imagine that a lot of great things could come of it. Now don't get me wrong - I'm not exactly clamoring for a Dead or Alive RPG, but with some of the minds over at Square, it's possible that a lot of Tecmo's old franchises can be brought back to some prestige. Also, yes, this is me hoping to see Ayane or someone of similar ilk in Dissidia.

Rod Oracheski: Fiction

I'm assuming Itagaki doesn't return to the fold with this guess. I just don't think SE is that great a match for Tecmo, even with their recent focus on expanding beyond the JRPG market and putting games onto store shelves in a more timely matter. SE wants to expand their offerings, but just acquiring a property like Ninja Gaiden by buying Tecmo isn't necessarily going to give them that variety. I'm guessing there'll be some rough starts and stops with new production, assuming the deal goes through.

Score: 1 for 2

3. In the end, most people will spend more time messing around with Spore's creature creator than playing the actual game.

Derek Robbins: Fiction

The creature creator has been out for months. I can't speak for everyone, but after the first couple of weeks of tooling around, I was ready for the main course. From everything I've seen about Spore, it will offer a ton of replay value and should be worth our wait. Now, some may complain that Spore isn't much of a "game" so much as an experiment, but that's where it's fun. The idea of evolution and ecosystems and food chains gets me very excited, and honestly, I see myself tinkering with the actual Spore title a lot longer than I messed with the creature creator. I mean, it's fun to MAKE things, but to see them actually do things is a whole different thing.

Rod Oracheski: Fiction

As with Derek, it didn't take me long to get tired of the creature creator, so I would guess most people will be the same way. How many obscene creatures can people really make before moving on to the game itself? As for the game itself, I'm not sure I'm completely sold on it. Will Wright hasn't let us down yet, but this one is reaching pretty far.

Score: 2 for 3

4. No boxing game has surpassed Mike Tyson's Punchout in entertainment value as far as single-player experiences go.

Rod Oracheski: Fiction

While Punchout was king for a long, long time, Fight Night Round 3 has proved, for me at least, to be a far more entertaining time. The cast of characters might not be as lively, but if you can't have a blast pummeling them into submission, you need to hang up the gloves for good.

Derek Robbins: Fact

You could accuse me of being washed away in a sea of nostalgia, but I am not a fan of boxing in the least and I can STILL enjoy Mike Tyson's Punchout. While Fight Night is a good series, it just... I'm not sure how I can put this... never hit home with me. A lot of the aesthetics seemed to cater to boxing nuts, and since I am... not exactly that... I prefer Punchout. Seriously, that game was released in 1987 and it STILL is a blast to play. On top of that, the roster remains as quirky as ever. For something to hold up over so long, it really does deserve some props and I'll give them here. While boxing fans may prefer the Fight Night series, as a video game fan, I prefer Mike Tyson's Punchout.

Score: 2 for 4

5. Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise will do better than its predecessor.

Rod Oracheski: Fact

Even if it's just by virtue of a larger userbase, the sequel should surpass the original pretty handily. Rare should also see a larger push on the title this time, though I'm not sure how much "bigger" it gets than having the franchise get its own TV show. Topping it all off, the game looks to actually be a fairly sizable improvement over the original, so appealing to a bigger audience should be simple.

Derek Robbins: Fact

Viva Piñata was kind of a surprise hit, wasn't it? It came from RARE who was sort of struggling to come up with something worth anyone's time, so to say it caught me unaware is a bit of an understatement. I believe that the sequel will surpass the original simply by word of mouth. A lot of people may not have bought the original title right away simply because the kiddy look to it was a turn-off. This time there will be some word of mouth, as well as fans of the TV show as Rod mentioned, to get others into the Viva Piñata mood, so I gotta say this game will absolutely do better than the original.

Score: 3 for 5

6. It is rumored that the Xbox 360 Arcade console will finally reach the $200 price point, which is said to be the "sweet spot" for console sales, on the 7th of September. If the Arcade's price does drop to that magical number, it will be difficult for Microsoft to keep the Arcade in stock this Christmas season.

Rod Oracheski: Fact

All three companies have had issues keeping supply on hand during Christmas in the past, so I don't see how Microsoft really stands a chance at keeping the Arcade on shelves in any case. The price drop on all three SKUs should give them a good boost going into the holidays, and I'm not even going to guess what the November/December numbers will be like.

I don't see how it can be called a rumor when the fliers are already out, by the way.

Derek Robbins: Fact

I have to be honest - even for someone who swore off Microsoft and the loathed 360s (mine broke on me, if you needed an explanation), this deal seems really great to me and could have me buying ANOTHER one. That's insane, you know? At two-hundred dollars, it's a really, really good deal. One of the big selling points of the Wii was the fact that it had such a low price, and sure, it'll receive a drop as well, but the Xbox has better graphics and that could attract more people. On top of that, it has a hard drive you can purchase, if you so desire, which is more than what the similarly priced Wii can say. I think it'll be a struggle to keep these on the shelves. This might also help to further push the 360 ahead of the still expensive PS3 in America. It's a great move for Microsoft all around.

Score: 4 for 6

We have a final score of 4 for 6. That's it for this week.

Now, we are currently lost in the forest. If the correct path is to go north, west, south, and then west as we had been told, we'll be back next week.

Square buying Tecmo will just result in a lot of the following.

1)Ryu Hayabusa will have way more belts and zippers. If Nomura takes over his design, I'd expect no less than twenty.

2)Dead or Alive RPG. Square will consider making a fighting game, but then they will remember that they are Square and it doesn't fit into one of the two genres they make. Yeah, I know about Final Fantasy Dissidia...

None of that matters, the only thing I care about is that they HAD BETTER NOT touch the Tecmo Bowl game on the DS. I swear, if it becomes Tecmo Blitzball...

Super Punchout didn't get mentioned?

"4. No boxing game has surpassed Mike Tyson's Punchout in entertainment value as far as single-player experiences go."

FICTION!!! Super Punch Out took all the great things about MTPO and improved the graphics and sound, therefore making it a way better game in my eyes. I Can sit down at any point and go through all 16 fights in that game and never get bored of trying to beat my times.

On your sixth question, I will disagree. First, a Arcade unit only comes with a small memory card (256 MB memory card). The Wii, on the otherhand, has 512 MB built in. The difference is huge considering the virtual console dwarfs the XBLA by leaps and bounds; morever, it adds games that we actually experienced when we were children (do not ever forget Wii-Ware).

The deal is not there. You will need a HDD (which is going to push the price UP), and a type of warranty to protect your purchase (the 360 has a track record of failure---price goes up). As you add in EVERYTHING that the 360 needs, the benefit simply disappears.

Mike Tysons Punch Out is still the best. Thats a game that brings back very fond memories and shows you why so many games fail these days. They forget that the game needs to fun.

Sorry to say but Super Punch-Out is still the best boxing game around.

Forgot to mention, I agree with Rod on the boxing question. The Fight Night series was incredible.

If Square aquires Tecmo, will we ever see a re-release of the vastly underrated Tecmo RPG?

Posted By: Robin (Guest)  on September 01, 2008 at 11:02 AM

It's not like Square/Enix doesn't have experience in making fighting games, they've done so multiple times with varying success.

does anyone even PLAY GTA 4 anymore? Was it the best GTA game ever? Of course, hands down. Was it one of the most BORING video game experiences of my life, HELL YEAH. The go around and blow up everything in sight genre is so watered down now that i can't even pick up a joystick unless it's something different. GTA 4 go boring REAL fast, and if people are honest with themselves they will admit that. It was a great game, no doubt. But who is still playing it? I'd say at least 75% of people have moved on

Saints Row 2 > Saints Row > GTA 4

I bought GTA 4, played it for about 30 minutes, and I haven't played it since.

So that everyone is aware, I have all 3 systems, wii Xbox360 and PS3.

Is it just me or does the 360 failure rate just blown out of proportion. I've had 3 360's. 1st one was perfect nothing wrong with it, gave it to my brother when I purchased my 360 Elite, 2nd one was perfect nothing wrong with it, that is until I dropped it in a move. 3rd one, the one I currently have, perfect nothing wrong. All my friends have 360's, I think only one of them had an issue with theirs. *yep just called him, just him* I don't see the big failure rate. Brother works at Best Buy. They see more defective PS3's then 360's.

Posted By: Nightpoison (Guest)  on September 01, 2008 at 07:08 PM

The 360 errors are way different depending on who you ask. If you were to ask someone like me, based on my experiences I would say that it is a real problem.

However, all of my friends who own a 360 have not had ONE problem. I don't know if they are just lucky or I'm cursed with bad luck.

Posted By: Drew Robbins (Registered)  on September 01, 2008 at 08:40 PM

Overexaggerated? Considering the failure rate is around 16.4%, that means you have a better chance of having a working console than a failed console. 16.4% is still WAYYYY above the general rate of failure for any console.

I'll be on my 3rd 360 when it comes back from Microsoft, FYI.

Look at the number of people even just on these forums who are asking about how to get a red ring error and you have to wonder how many RRoD cases are legit.

I've seen people trying to force a RRoD just to try and get an HDMI 360.

Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered)  on September 01, 2008 at 08:57 PM

Just because you THINK that the RROD is blown out of proportion because it hasn't had a negative effect on your...that does not mean it isn't real. Under your rationale, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus isn't real as well.

Some idiots only believe in something when they experience the problem in queston. That is why they are call "idiots."

Once again you reply twice. At least this time you managed to keep the same login. It's progress, ManCrush! Baby steps, little guy.

Wow, Dave. Nighpoison asked if it might be blown out of proportion. That does not make him an idiot, or a simpleton, or anything else. He asked a question in a respectful manner, and offered examples to enforce his question. lighten up man. It's not like he came in and said the failure rate was all a sham, and called anyone who said otherwise a tool.
To answer your question Nightpoison, in a respectful manner. No the failure rate is not fabricated. Of the 5 people I play with the most on XBL, there is only one that has not had to replace his system, and that is because he has only been gaming for about 6 months or so. Of the remaining friends that have had problems, I am on my 5th system (only one was RROD though, others were various power supply problems, and my laser was junk). Another friend is right behind me on his 4th system, another has just started on his second system, and the last of us has been through I think 8 systems. (5 12gig 360's and 3 Elites) So it is a huge problem, and one that Microsoft is going to have to fix if they hope to keep people using their system. Even as a fan of the 360's I can admit that. So it is not blown out of proportion.

Did our friend Lat just compare the 360 fail rate to HIV? Thats low, even for you pal. That is low...

Posted By: Hater (Guest)  on September 02, 2008 at 12:40 PM

I apologize for becoming so defensive towards your question/perception. I can be a bit abrasive when sharing my opinions. Toddo knows full well how I can be at times (we had are disagreements awhile ago).

Hater,

It was not a comparison to illustrate the impact. It was a comparison of people's perception. It was used to illustrate how some people do not believe something they are told. If everyone just acted to your blessing, we would still be in merry ol' England....thinking the world is flat.

Posted By: lateralus81 (Registered)  on September 02, 2008 at 02:57 PM

Wow... Even a simple question gets attacked by Lat these days... Where did you pull all this shit out about the world acting to my blessing? You are seriously reaching nowadays man. I just asked if you compared the 360 failure to HIV, and your spouting off about merry ol' England. Oh wait, I suppose you hate the English as much as you hate America, and Canadians right? Rod was right, you do fabricate a lot of stuff. You really do take a lot of other things out of context just to soothe your own ego and make you feel like you are smarter than others, don't ya?
Abrasive is not the word I would use to describe Lat's opinion sharing. I'd say its more like...if you don't agree with his assesments & opinions, then clearly you are an idiot. If you try to argue with him, you are apparently a dumb American, or a Canadian woman trying to be a man.. Sound about right Lat?

Posted By: Hater (Guest)  on September 03, 2008 at 11:08 AM

I still play GTA IV. In fact I'm making my way through it for a 3rd time. I look forward to the DLC and from what I keep hearing it will be big, I just hope they don't delay it any further than November.

Posted By: Marcus (Guest)  on September 03, 2008 at 04:41 PM

Wow....Hater? What do you do again? Hmmm...What is your job/profession? Before you call anyone an idiot, answer the question. I have MORE of a right than you.

Posted By: lateralus81 (Registered)  on September 03, 2008 at 11:26 PM

How exactly does what you do for a living, unless it is in the video game industry make your opinion any more valid than my own?
And once again, there you go adding phantom lines to someones post, or taking it out of context. Where in either post did I call you an idiot? Where? Point it out to me! Oh yeah, thats right. I didn't call you an idiot anywhere in either of my posts on this column, now did I? Don't worry though, I'm not holding my breath for an apology.
With your super human ability to fabricate lies and take other things out of context, if I had to venture a guess, I'd say Lat was a politician. Where else would such "talents" be put to good use?
Oh, and to answer your question about what I do for a living, even though it is irrelevant on an opinion based comments section. I work for a magazine publishing company.
Oh... I bet that hurts, doesn't it Lat? The fact that I am not an employee of Burger King, like I'm sure you were hoping. Sorry, buddy. I can't get you a discount.
So I answered the question Davelat... Your turn.. What do you do for a living that you feel makes your opinions, and points of view any more valid than anyone who writes for, and or comments on this website?
Bet we don't get an answer.
