The 10th Hour 09.05.08: Top 10 Least Favorite Critically Acclaimed Games
Posted by Derek Robbins on 09.05.2008

Hello and welcome to the 10th hour! As always, there are a couple of tangents I would like to go off on before I get into the meat of the column.

-I was discussing with Drew about the year so far in gaming, and I have to say…compared to last year it's been a huge improvement. Already there are three or four titles that are in contention for GOTY and it's not even the holiday season yet. I wouldn't go so far to say it's been one of the best years EVER but it feels like 1998 in comparison to last year.

-The Cubs have lost five straight games at home – SERIOUSLY – and naturally the fanbase is freaking the fuck out. You just need to calm down and remember that every team in baseball history has gone through a slump. Look at the past couple world series champions and you will see that they had losing streaks in September as well. We'll be fine. Of course, I assume a lot of the people freaking out are bandwagoners, so maybe you should just jump off that bandwagon now eh?

-Looking at the calendar I can't help but realize that it is September…you do realize what September means, don't you? It's MEGAMAN 9 TIME. Oh God, I can't wait. The days are racking up slowly but soon enough I'll be playing through that glorious pixilated mess.

Well this is where I would normally place your feedback and reply to it…problem is I didn't write the 10th hour last week! Mark Salmela took over for me and did a wonderful job in doing so. Let's see…so far we've had four different 10th hour writers. Drew, Mark Salmela, Mike Minotti, and myself…who will be next in line? I dunno, I think I'll choose between Rod Oracheski and Theo Fraser if they want to. Whatever the case, no feedback this week because I can't speak for Mark. Sorry!

Top-10 Critically Acclaimed Games I don't like

This week I've decided to run down some games that the critics really enjoy…that I just don't think are that great. That's not to say that they aren't GOOD games. A couple of the games that appear on this list I will admit are well-made and there must be something wrong, perhaps mentally, with myself for not liking them.

Also, this shouldn't be confused with my over-rated games list because I actually LIKED those games. On this list, it's only stuff I don't like so with that out of the way, let's get started…

Oh, and one word. Madden games and sport titles are ineligible because, quite frankly, this list would just be sports titles if I went by that standard.

Also of note, order is a bit loose on this one. The number 1 and 2 are definitely my two least favorite though.

10-) The Splinter Cell Franchise - I'm not sure what it is about Splinter Cell that repels me so much. After all, most of you know that the Metal Gear Solid franchise is probably one of my favorite franchises ever…so why can't I share that love for Splinter Cell? Well, one problem with the game is that the story never drew me in. Tom Clancy titles rarely have narrative that draws me in…but when you're going toe-to-toe with Solid Snake you best have a gun worth firing, and maybe I am missing something…I just didn't like it. I think the fact that I didn't enjoy the story really hurt my enjoyment of the game as a whole.

A lot of the mechanics felt really awkward to me…and often times when struggling ahead I would ask myself: "Why am I doing this again?" The motivation would not be there and I would just inevitably quit. Now, listen, I understand that Pandora Tomorrow apparently included a very interesting tale but the fact is that the original left such a bad taste in my mouth that I never felt the urge to play further…no matter what rave reviews were saying. I also had a problem with the fact everything was dark. Don't mis-understand me…I get that it makes things more realistic. It's far from realism to have an old man in a muscle suit sneaking around the middle east fighting robots but like…at least it felt fun. I never had an ounce of fun with the splinter cell franchise.

I admit that my bias towards Metal Gear Solid may be the reason this game appears on this list. Who knows, in a world where there is no such thing as Solid Snake…perhaps Sam Fischer is competing for my heart. The fact is, this world DOES have Solid Snake…so Splinter Cell will probably never resonate with me.

Fisher

9-) Devil May Cry 4 - I am a pretty big fan of the Devil May Cry franchise. Devil May Cry 1 and Devil May Cry 3 are among my favorite action games ever, especially the third since it was just action-game perfection. Insane difficulty, fun gameplay…the third DMC title had everything a fan of action games could possibly want. It's only natural given the quality of the third title that I would be eagerly awaiting the release of the fourth title. After all, even if it was like DMC 2 in quality it would at least be a PLAYABLE game. Now, it wasn't quite Devil May Cry 2 bad…but it just wasn't good.

The first sign that the game isn't any good is in the "new" character Nero. If you're going to go out and reveal a new character to your long-time fans why not just create a NEW character? From Nero's personality to the way he fights, you would be forgiven in thinking that he is, in fact, Dante. I guess the character designers got confused as well since the design for Nero is almost the exact same as Dante! It's kind of ludicrous when I think about…but let's be fair, why do characters matter? From a DMC stand-point characters don't really matter…they've always been fairly ridiculous.

Speaking of ridiculous, the story in the game is still ridiculous. It doesn't feel like the original DMC where they full-out realize the story is stupid…they actually go out of their way to make the story feel serious when it isn't good enough to warrant such a direction. It's one thing to have a ridiculous story and revel in it like God Hand does…you can get away with that because then your game becomes almost satirical…but DMC? It doesn't do that and it comes off poorly in the process.

Devil May Cry has never been a franchise that's been strong on story…it's all about the gameplay. Well, what do they do with the gameplay here? Everything feels rather generic. Throughout each characters levels I got this massive feeling of "been here-done that"…now I understand that it's a sequel and feelings of such should be NATURAL but if you had told me this game was Devil May Cry 1 with updated graphics and lower, easier difficulty I would have been like: "Okay, yeah, I can see that." Very lazy, very Capcom-like…

Speaking of lazy, I sure do love how they loop the same bosses over and over again throughout the game and how you play through each level twice but as a different character. I guess they said: "Okay, shit, the game is like four hours long with just Nero…how can we make it longer?" So they added Dante and had him play through the same levels for a few hours. It just…rubs me the wrong way. Devil May Cry 4 could have been so much more and in the end it was a waste of my time…and probably your time as well.

Lady - Slut it up a little, Lady.

8-) Oblivion I do not like WRPGs. There, I've said it. I find the entire genre to be a massive waste of time and offer you a ton of promise with no delivery. I can count the number of WRPGs I have enjoyed with one hand. Even then, I'd probably only need a couple of fingers. I had heard a ton of hype surrounding the latest Elder Scrolls game so I decided to give it a shot…hoping that maybe, MAYBE I could up the magical "Good WRPG Count"

I was wrong, I did not enjoy myself at all. First of all, the entire experience is plodding at best. It's so slow developing and while it offers you a ton of options for character development…I find it horribly lame that no matter which path you take you always wind up with the same ending. This is not so much a complaint about Oblivion but a complaint about WRPGs in general. They offer you a plethora of options…a plethora of things you can do with your characters but no matter what happens the ending will ALWAYS be the same.

This could all be forgiven if the game was at least fun to play, but the first person combat system is clunky at best. It's interesting to tool around with for a while since you don't play many first-person-sword-like games but…it gets tiring easily and even when you go out of first person mode the combat never felt anything more than a mash-the-button-to-swing-the-weapon game.

I wish I could go more into depth as to why I dislike Oblivion…it seems obvious to me after all. All WRPGs fall into this trap. The problem is, I KNOW it's a good game and one that I should like. I should be there along with my fellow gaming brethren and shouting from the rooftops about how compelling this experience is…but I just don't see it, I'm sorry. What's so great about a world where NPCs have like three or so lines of dialogue? What's so great about a place where you can do anything but…your final destination is the same? I guess it makes you feel like you're playing in an actual world since everything is so big and epic in scope, but if I felt like tooling around in an actual world I would tool around in mine.

Horse - Many bad things came from Oblivion.

7-) Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core - I have sort of a love-hate relationship with Final Fantasy VII. On one hand it's probably the one Final Fantasy I've beat more than any other. Why do I keep going back to it? I'm not sure…but it's a fun experience. That said, I've said many times that FF VII is one of the most over-rated games of all time and isn't even in the top-5 best Final Fantasy titles. I still care about the narrative, but I feel it gets more credit than it deserves…so I approached FF VII: Crisis Core with a mixed bag of enthusiasm and worry. I wanted to learn more about Zack Fair, who is essentially the Cloud you know from FF VII, and this was the only place in town I could do so.

Well first, let me get this out of the way. If you play FF VII: CC just for the story, you'll probably like it. Unlike Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children which absolutely raped the story of Final Fantasy VII and taped the entire process to show millions of screaming fanboys, Crisis Core has a GOOD story. I found Zack to be quite the likable guy and I would argue that the ending to the game was not just tear worthy, but also the best ending to a PSP game…ever. It's not bad. The problem is, it is billed as an action-RPG so I'm NOT just playing this game for the story…how does the rest of the game hold up?

To say FF VII CC's combat system is a bit of a mess is an under-statement. They introduce a roulette system into the game that alternates between limit-style attacks, leveling up, and summoning. This is a TERRIBLE idea since you have no control over what happens. You can fight enemies for an hour and not level up but you can also find other people who level up two battles in a row. It's insane. Imagine if you were in a college course and instead of acknowledging the effort you put forth to do your assignments they just spin a wheel and if certain numbers show up you get an A. It also takes away any strategy from the limit system. Instead of having one and storing it for a specific moment you just use it whenever the roulette says so. It's bothersome and un-necessary. If they had simply put a more traditional leveling system up and allowed limit breaks to be used manually maybe the game wouldn't have appeared on this list.

Still though, there are more things to rag on about the battle system. If I had to compare it to something I would say it takes the worst parts out of Kingdom Hearts and the worst parts out of Final Fantasy XII and throws them together in a cess-pool of suck. To say it takes no skill to mash your way through battles is a bit of an under-statement. Oh sure, like, Hard mode is a little harder but it's still a bit of a joke.

In my mind, the story is something you don't want to miss out on…so if you can find videos of the story on the internet do yourself a favor and watch them. They're pretty good and worth your time. The game, on the other hand…isn't worth it. It falls just short of being tolerable and that's just such a shame since FF VII deserves better.

Zack

6-) Mortal Kombat Franchise Fighting games are a pleasure of mine. If you were to call me a glutton, Fighting games would be the feast I most prefer to dine on. In all honesty, if I had to rank my top-3 favorite genres they would be 1-) Fighting 2-) JRPG 3-) SRPG. For a fighting game to rank on this list they'd have to not only be bad, but exceptionally bad and I do believe Mortal Kombat fits the bill as far as this is concerned.

You may be thinking: "Well, you just mean the recent MKs right?" No sir, I do not. While recent MKs are deplorable as well, I really can't see why people still like the original Mortal Kombat games. I've gone back to try and play them several times but every time I do I find myself quitting shortly after. It's nowhere close to being as sophisticated as its main competition, Street Fighter…it just is baffling to me.

My main assumption is that the only reason we even remember the game at all today is because it is ultra violent. In that sense, it was a bit of a pioneer…All of those ultra violent super mature games we see today owe a bit of gratitude to Mortal Kombat for being the violence pioneer. After all, MK was the first place we could see tons of gore, blood, and vicious killing on videogames. Again though, just because it was revolutionary doesn't mean it was good and I think a lot of people confuse those things.

I mean, seriously…the combat system in the game is sluggish. It feels like they pit two turtles in men costumes and had them fight each other. For goodness sakes, Duke Nukem Forever's development process thinks Mortal Kombat is a slow-ass fighter. Everyone seems to over-look the idea that it's slow and plodding simply because there is a load of blood and that just infuriates me.

I do feel like I need to give props to the graphics though. The characters had fairly realistic models and, for the time, I'd say it was darn pretty. That's one of the reason this title was the godfather of controversy. It'd be one thing for super cartoony characters to be removing each others spines but for somewhat realistic humans to be doing it is a whole ‘nother story.

MK is a trend-setting franchise that has a place in history but don't confuse it for a good franchise. Please. Well to be fair, the game DID have good music.

Liu Kang - He's no Ryu.

5-) Metroid Prime - I know I'm going to get a lot of flack for this one. So before I get started writing about it, I'd like to preface this by saying that while I played it I could tell the game was good. It's not only good, it's great. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with its mechanics and it does some amazingly cool things worthy of praise. For instance, the bit of illumination on Samus's visor where you can see her face. That sort of thing adds a sense of personality to Samus and that's cool. If I was a normal person I KNOW I'd love Metroid Prime.

That said, it's on the list…so there's a reason for my disliking it. First of all, while I can tolerate the backtracking mechanics in Super Metroid, I can't tolerate them here. I'm guessing because in three dimensions you have more ways to experiment with things and due to this…it turns me off. There are parts of Metroid Prime 1 where I would have to force my way through it because…well…you had to backtrack. That chozo stuff was infuriating.

While I do have fun with the shooting mechanics and think they are pretty well executed…I'd have had more fun with another 2D Metroid. That's why I found myself preferring Metroid Fusion which was released around the same time. It has all the elements of classic Metroid but without the things that, when translated into 3D, are super annoying and tedious. I do admire what Retro Studios did with this game since, at the time, turning Metroid into a First Person Action game was a sin. People were rioting the streets when they thought Samus and James Bond had something in common…but most people enjoyed the game so that dilemma quickly faded.

It just wasn't for me. Metroid Prime 2 wasn't either. I tried to love the two games, I REALLY did…but I found a lot of the games mechanics, which many would consider strong points, to be simply troublesome. Metroid Prime 3 came out and totally shifted my thinking on the series. First of all, while there is some back tracking involved it gets nowhere close to what you will find in the other games and to compliment this revolution they also throw in some of the best controls a console game has ever received. That deserves recognition.

Metroid Prime is a great game that you should play. I can almost guarantee you'll sucker some enjoyment out of it. I would never, EVER argue that it's a bad game. It has good gameplay mechanics that appeal to most people…the problem is I am not "most people" and the game just doesn't appeal to me. I am sorry.

Metroid Prime

4-) God of War 2 - This game actually appeared on my top-20 games of last year list I do believe and to be honest even then I wasn't the biggest fan of the game. I ended up putting it on the list because, well…I figured EVERYONE ELSE likes it so it must be good. To be fair, it does have some really neat things that I could see a lot of people liking but when I sit and ponder on it for a while I really…don't see what the big freaking deal is.

The original God of War had an interesting story that wasn't…like…stupid. I mean it's not going to win any awards for superb writing in the video game industry but it was serviceable. The story in God of War 2 goes beyond simply being serviceable and heads into Devil May Cry territory of "ridiculous". Is there a figure in Greek Mythology that you quite enjoy? Do you find yourself an Odysseus guy? Do you like Hermes? WELL GUESS WHAT. Odds are you will be running into them at some point. I guess they wanted to appease all the greek nerds out there but…it just screams to me: "WE WANT YOU TO LIKE THIS"

Like Matt Hardy, the PS2 simply won't die. God of War II is such a fantastic game and is a worthy sequel to the original. It has an interesting story and a lot of fun action.

That right there is the single lamest thing I have ever written for the 10th hour. The story isn't interesting at all! I guess I must have been high on 300 fumes (I do mention it in the section) because there is no way any sane person could think the narrative is "interesting". Well, err, in my defense I didn't say good at least.

Again though, this isn't the sort of game you'd play for the story. Not even I am naïve enough to assume this. The problem with the gameplay here is that, to be quite honest…it takes about no skill. A lot of the time I found myself jamming on the square-button. I realize that you can jam your way through SEVERAL games out there, but for a game that prides itself on gameplay this is just inexcusable in my opinion. Perhaps God Hand and its "If you mash through me you will die" methodology has spoiled me. I just don't think a high-profile action game like this should be a masher though.

This game is sort of…it's just a guy game I guess. You've got breasts, you've got violence, you've got cursing. It just panders to males. I must have fallen into the same trap when I purchased this game…and I wish I wouldn't have because despite all the hype GoW 2 is not only NOT a worthy successor to the original but it's also NOT worth your money.

Pre-2008 10th hour is terrible. I apologize to anyone who had to read that garbage.

GoW

3-) Tales of Symphonia - You may remember that way up there in the fighting game section I claim that my second favorite genre out of all the known ones out there is Japanese Role Playing Games. I guess I just love whatever stories they churn out so much that I am blinded by all other facets of the game. Or perhaps they can be all-around good games such as Persona 3 or Final Fantasy XII, I just don't know…but when a JRPG has a mind-numbingly bland story the rest of its imperfections just leap out at me.

First, let's touch on the story a bit. Let's just say that Seth McFarlane thinks that Tales of Symphonia has a cliché over-done story. When people say "generic anime storyline" in reference to games I truly believe they have this in mind. Nothing, and I mean nothing, about this game's plot stands out as memorable. It's just one big generic mess and when it comes to JRPGs I expect a bit more than that. What distinguishes Lloyd from someone like Adell from Disgaea 2 or any lame shonen hero? Nothing. Just bland.

Now let's go onto what many consider to be the game's saving grace, the combat. Let me preface this to the people who will say: "BUT YOU CAN'T MASH DURING CERTAIN BOSS BATTLES"…no shit. In any masher, even the aforementioned God of War, you have to think during boss battles every once in a while. Anyhow, as you can probably tell by my comments I'm going to say that the game is a masher. Yep, through pretty much the whole of the game – even during some boss battles – I found that the A-button was my best friend. Yeah, moving around the 2D field was nice but even that wasn't totally necessary at times. As long as my thumb was operable I could make my way through the game.

The Tales of Series is rather popular in both Japan and America and for the life of me I can't understand why. I've tried to enjoy these titles time in and time out and every time I bother with it I come out with a bad taste in my mouth. I hope Tales of Vesparia has been pleasant to all of you who bought it and is exactly what you thought it was…I just know I will never touch the title because, well…it's not for me I guess. A JRPG not for a fan of JRPGs. Harumph!

ToS

2-) Animal Crossing - The year is 2002. I am looking through my usual game magazines, looking to see if anything is out that will catch my eyes. In EGM they praised this game to the ends of the earth and it even received some praise in the Official Playstation Magazine, so I could be forgiven in thinking that this title would appeal to me. After all, if a magazine praises something a competitor has it's got to be good, right?

Well, uhm, it's not. Animal Crossing is a game that promises full interactivity with the villagers within your town and I find that its promises fall flat. When you write letters to the towns people, no matter how vile the contents of said letter may be they thank you for it and tell you how nice the letter was. I sent a member of my town, Izzy, one of the most profane mails I have ever sent to anyone in my life and when my brother Drew was talking to Izzy they showed him the letter and then Izzy proceeded to talk about how NICE OF A LETTER IT WAS. I am a fan of interactivity, but this doesn't seem very interactive to you does it?

On top of this, the game offers you roughly 15 minutes a day of gameplay. You fish for a while, dig around for fossils, maybe write a couple of mails to your hombres, pull some weeds, and arrange your house for a bit. Once it's done, you're done for the day and are forced to find other things to do. Oh sure, I understand that you're supposed to play this game for a very long time and making you play for elongated periods of time for a year's length or longer could have been harrowing…but if even an HOUR of gameplay a day could have been implemented perhaps my opinion would be fonder?

This is the sort of game I feel doesn't lend itself well to consoles. I feel like I am wasting my time when I play the Gamecube version. I feel like, wow, 15 minutes of my life have passed and I'll never get them back. Even when I explore towns of friends I find myself tiring of it quickly. On a portable system, however…it feels like less of a waste of time. While I'm waiting to catch my bus to SIU I can play Animal Crossing, when a Cubs game is on I can play Animal Crossing…it seems much more efficient and is probably why I greatly prefer Wild World over the original. That said though, I still don't think WW is all that great.

Perhaps the new wii game with all of its supposed online features will change my mind and have me embrace the series but I truly doubt it. Animal Crossing in the end feels like a dumbed down, uglier version of the Sims. It may claim to offer increased interactivity but it doesn't really. It has things that make you think you're interacting with the critters but it's all a big ruse. Part of the big reasons E3 was a big disappointment to me is because Nintendo's big announcement was Animal Crossing: Wii. I hate Animal Crossing.

AC - They made a movie outta' this?

1-) Halo: Combat Evolved - When Halo first came out, every magazine in the history of the world was orgasming about just how damn good this game was. To be fair, when you assembled enough people together and played 16-player LAN matches it was pretty fun but I defy you to find a shooter that ISN'T fun with 16-guys in the same room. When you take Halo into consideration, LAN parties shouldn't be a factor. They're always fun, regardless of the game…so does this hurt Halo at all?

Yes. To call the Single Player campaign in Halo 1 a joke is almost a compliment. It is a plodding nightmare and it deserves derision from all sources. You know what I really enjoy? I enjoy wondering around lost in a level for several minutes because I can't tell where I am going due to all the backgrounds being the same. I don't care if you're playing the game on co-op or what have you, the library is one of the worst levels in video game history. There are other areas in Halo where backgrounds loop like it's going out of style, but that level just brings it all to its head.

As if that wasn't enough, there's not one thing about Halo's experience that is fresh or unique. I guess the vehicles are kind of neat…but you find that a lot of the more serious players turn them off and when you do that what distinguishes Halo from something like Goldeneye or Perfect Dark? Nothing really, I guess the graphics are bigger and playing on the duke is more frustrating…but other than that, what's really new about Halo? Nothing.

A lot of people think Halo 1 is the best instance of the franchise, but I think it's just because there's a number 1 in front of it. As we all know, every sequel ever is worse than the original no matter what. Halo 2 and 3 may practically be the same game but at least they fix their problems with the campaign mode. You no longer loop through the same backgrounds…and it's actually kind of fun. On top of this, if you can't get a LAN together – which I stress, is fun NO MATTER WHAT SHOOTER YOU ARE PLAYING – those two games offer online play for fun multiplayer no matter the situation.

Halo: Combat Evolved is due a lot of credit because it brought a lot of people over to Microsoft's bandwagon and helped keep the new entrant into the console wars afloat. That doesn't make it a good game. I don't care what anyone says, I think Halo: CE was a bad, over-rated title that gets significantly more credit than it deserves.

And as mentioned it kept Microsoft in the console game. The 360 is good and all but wouldn't we rather have Sega there? (Yes, yes, I know the PS2 was what ultimately killed the Dreamcast but still…I am allowed to be bitter)

Halo

Well, that's it for this week. As always you can feel free to comment below or shoot me an e-mail at Dragonmaster_Alex_158@hotmail.com Now that my computer is back up and normal I can actually e-mail you back so don't be shy about it…I'm curious as to what you have to say. What critically acclaimed games do you not like? Feel like an outcast with me!

Before I sign off though, let's see what's going on around 411 mania's game section shall we?

Jordan "The Ogre" Williams further examines the Megaman franchise in this week's working titles. He talks about the current state of Megaman…which is pretty much grounded in portable consoles. As he says, most of them are awful but there are a couple good games. Also, I totally agree…Monkey Island is fantastic

Owain "The Letter" J. Brimfield writes The Wonder Years and it's coming to a close. As part of a blow-out end of column super sell Owain brings us the first part of a top-20 best 16-bit era games. So far, so good…Earthbound is a LITTLE low on the list but I am just glad you included it.

This week on the PC-centric Extravaganza Chris Evans breaks down the Gamer's Bill of Rights and also has some Fallout 3 news for us. We don't have much PC-coverage on this site so show Chris some love

Dr...wait...MARK SALMELA wrote coming attractions this week. He mentions how Infinite Undiscovery was getting a THUMBS WAY DOWN from him and looks like he was right after all. Good call Mark. Don't let those crazy scalliwags perturb you, you did a good job filling in for me Drew.

Tommy Coloma moderates Fact or Fiction and this week the buffet of manliness known as myself takes on Rod "Gold" Oracheski in a match of wits. Questions include Square Enix taking over Tecmo and whether Mike Tyson's Punch Out was the finest boxing game ever.

John Curry, the Curry man, writes the Checkpoint. It's hot, it's spicy, and it tastes great. This week he demands less game movies. I dunno, some of them are so bad they're good. See: Mario Brothers The Movie.

I know this is a link to last week's 10th hour, but Mark wrote it and wanted to make sure to thank him again for doing it last week. It's over a subject I fawn over every week…and I could not have compiled a list that is much better. Great job Mark.

My opponent in Fact or Fiction, ROD ORACHESKI, writes Achievement Unlocked and this week he talks about one sport that consistently receives quality titles. Hockey! In a showdown of NHL 09 and NHL 2K9 he deems NHL 2K9 to have the better achievement list.

Tommy Coloma also writes the Negative Edge news report and he breaks the STORY OF THE YEAR…DISGAEA WILL HAVE A SIDE-SCROLLING PLATFORMER! This news makes me jump out of my chair in excitement. I love Disgaea, I love platforming, what could go wrong!?

Theo Fraser writes the Nintendophiles and apparently Street Fighter IV for the wii would not be a "kiddie" version of the game as some crazy people had feared. Good. Now just confirm the game already.

Vincent Chiucchi writes Select and Start News report. There doesn't appear to be a news report up for this week but make sure to check out last week's to show him some love. He does a good job.

Joe Roche updates on the same day as I do so this column is a bit old too, but make sure to check Roche's latest Full Circle when it updates later tonight.

I write B3yond the Report and you should read it because I am awesome.

Well that's it for this week. I'm out.

'til the Crossroads

God of War 2 sacrilege notwithstanding, pretty good column/list.

Splinter Cell really sucks I agree, but Oblivion, man, you are crazy. That might be in the top 10 games of all time.

Oblivion is one of the best games ever made period. But I def get why some people dont like it. God of War 2 was great too but I liked the first one better. Metroid Prime on the Wii is the shit. Splinter Cell did get boring. MK2 FN CLASSIC.

Very disheartening on the GOW2 on the list but made up with the rightfully putrid Halo on #1. Halo panders to jock meatheads that surprise surprise, infest on M$ consoles. And DMC4 was disappointing because it was watered down by the 360. More proof that M$ IS bad for the industry. I'm just surprised you didn't include Gears of War. For the love of anything good, the game is just a dumb 3rd person shooter fueled only by the ridiculous M$ hype.

I guess I understand the list, although I think Halo was one of the best games ever. But then, I'm a fanboy...I even bought the books.

inb4 shit storm!

I have to disagree with you and say that Street Fighter was the one with the sluggish controls and slow fighting. And I have to agree with you BIG TIME with Oblivion. While I agree with you, the horse armor crap is shit, the game was phenomenal for a RPG of its nature especially for consoles

I totally agree with Oblivion. I tried to play through it and I just wasnt pulled in. Metroid Prime and DMC4 are also on my list with the GTA franchise.

But the number one game everyone loves and I just CANNOT stand is the Metal Gear franchise. What's so great about it? I played through the first three with a feeling of "Why am I even bothering?". I saw a few people play through 4 and just wasnt moved by it. In fact, I picked up a book through most of 4 and glanced up every once in a while. There's nothing that draws me in about the stealth aspects of the series and the story is decent in the worst ways. I know it's a personal thing and while I respect how the games have revolutionized the gaming world, I just cant get into it.

how dare you not like oblivion or wrpg's. im gonna guess a very ugly woman wrote this. or a man who resembles a very ugly woman. because only they play the jrpg garbage

oh and devil may cry sucked cause it was the same trash as before: an ugly woman with guns and powerman 5000 music.

About Metroid Prime:

Years later, and I still can't get the hang of Metroid Prime. Seriously, I despise the Gamecube controller.

I also felt the game commited what is, to me, the unpardonable sin in gaming: getting worse as it goes along. I know Prime is seen as a classic, but someone else out there has to agree that every step of this game isn't as wonderful as the last.

This one's fairly simple for me: Guitar Hero. Not that I hate the game or anything, I had fun playing it...for a few days. After that, it just became so repititious that it started to bore me to tears. Not that a bad of a game, and I can understand why people love it. But maybe they should just learn how to actually play the guitar for real.

Also, since you mentioned it, Final Fantasy XII would be on my list. I love FF games and have since I was a kid, but this one just didn't do it for me. Mostly due to that combat system (or how if you fought a huge boss you couldn't see shit), it just didn't hold my interest like any of the others.

I'll do it one week - 10 good games nobody played...La Pucelle, Chromehounds, Earthbound...

Wait, not that last one.

I forgot about Guitar Hero. How could I? GH 3 would have been fairly high on this list.

Also...Rod...it makes me cry a little on the inside when you mention nobody playing Earthbound. ;_; I'll play it twenty times for everyone who hasn't.

I've got to ask...why put the whole Splinter Cell franchise on the list if you've only played the first game. That's like...I don't know, putting the whole Metal Gear series on there because you hated the NES game.

Posted By: WillScott (Guest)  on September 05, 2008 at 01:16 AM

YAY finally someone agrees with me about Splinter Cell, I would play that game going "huh, am I supposed to be achieving something?" almost all the time. Its a poor mans MSG.

Hey even though I knew MK was going to be on the list, surely the awesomeness of Sub Zero pleases you... right?

Oh and since im a Goldeneye fanboy (yes I admit) you should have had Perfect Dark tied with Halo.

Still, great column as always... when is the Convenant of the Gridiron coming back anyway?

What the fuck. GOW2 having a bad story? It is greek mythology dude. That was the point..GoW is one of the most cinematic story games to date.

Kratos becomes the GoW and is stripped of his powers and murdered, so you have to travel through the underworld and back in time(where, along the way you find out you only succeeded in the first GoW because you saved yourself by going back in time) to prevent it, then you gather titans to wage war on the gods.

How the FUCK is that not badass? lol

Derek, you don't like 2D Mortal Kombat or God of War 2? I am going to eat you.

But otherwise good list *great calls on Splinter Cell and Metroid Prime*. We all have games that we don't like that others do. I hate everything that contains the letter "R" "G" and "P" together for example.

And I liked how you've totally dodged the fact that I tried to put as much hate on Earthbound as possible last week without flat out saying it.

Most hated game for me(because everyone loves it but it's nowhere near the franchise level):

Final Fantasy XII

1. Fighting system sucks ass: Sorry but if I set the gambits the right way, I can just leave the controller and go have a cup of coffee.
What I also didn't like was that I could walk around with all my characters being sword/axe/broadsword users and gut everything in my way, except the bosses with physical immunity. Kinda makes the rest of the char. classes not needed?

2: Story was kinda bland - Yeah, I congratulate Square-Enix for leaving the love story aside for once, but the story of this game didn't grab me....
The characters didn't work for me...

3: When are they going to have a main protagonist that looks like a normal man? Here I thought that Tidus from FFX looked kinda gay, when the first screens of this one came along.
I understand that japanese people are way into this girly boys thing, but for cryin out loud, for once give me a guy that doesn't look like a girl and actually has some facial hair. even a stubble would do.

4: Almost no CGs : FFX had about 70 CG sequences, and most of them were actually long. This one had about....maybe 20 tops, and most of them were no more than 15-20 seconds long. This is one of their trademarks, and here they are letting us hang.

6. Long parts of gameplay with no cutcsenes. I'm not talking about CG's here, I'm talking about normal scenes with character interaction. FFX had them almost every 30 minutes. This one has one roughly every two hours. Sometimes when I was in one of the tombs or whatever, I had close to 3 hour long periods with no cutscenes at all. This is no good for the story, sometimes I had the feeling I was playing a hack-n-slasher Diablo style.

7. The monsters you can summon suck ass, never tried to develop them and raise their level(heard from people you can do that)
But looking at losing all my other team members, who are actually good for something, for a slow monster who died after about one or two slaps from the enemy... Well, my choice is easy: summon once to see how they look like, and then forget they exist.

Now tell me this game is somewhere close to a true classic FF game like X.
Now tell me this is "all around great game".
No way.

That is a little harsh on mortal kombat. I always had issues with Street Fighter's special moves at the aracade and @ home. Most of the MK games are simple and the fatalaties are a way to rub it in someone's face.
I guess either your a streetfighter fan or mortal kombat fan, just like your either dc or marvel.

Only thing I would have added was San Andreas GTA which was the most overrated game ever.

I played the second one too. There are only three right (with pandora tomorrow being the last I think...)? 2/3 of the games I didn't like, so there you go.

Derek,

I agree with your placement of Halo. However, you are going to get ripped by Halo fanboys (even one that writes for this site). >__<

I respect your opinion, but I disagree with the first 8 on your list. I also understand your critiques of DMC4, but I still like it. I do not play DMC for a stellar story.

Thinking about it, I didn't really like Oblivion. The story is crap, in my honest opinion. I will get a 30 or so hours into the game and just stop playing. There is no motivation to play any longer.

30 hours tends to be my limit for games that lack an enticing narrative.

Wow, for once I actually agree with you on you're video game list. As for Oblivion..maybe you needed to upgrade your PC at the time it played flawlessly for me.

Wow, I really really hope you don't get paid to write columns...how the hell are you going to gripe about Oblivion because it's an RPG style game, and then in the very next paragraph talk about how you've beaten FFVII loads of times?

Animal Crossing is awesome, Oblivion is awesome, and the Mortal Kombat franchise was greatness...the rest I can see why you would have a problem with.

Ocelot 422 I hate to give you any attention but that was funny. DMC4 wasn't good because it was still very much the same game from the first one not because of M$ as you like to put it. Also who is doing more harm to the Industry M$ or the company that released a console that most people are buying as a Blu-ray player not to play videogames on. Of course you seem the type that would say the Wii is a joke, Even though its just what the industry needed then again who knows maybe not, just might hate M$.

Fuck off u stupid writer!! GOW2 was fucking amazing!! Gameplay was top, graphics were top class. And if u thought the story was shit u obviously dont know anything about greek mythology. What a dumbass u are!! And Galo 1,2,and 3 should be in that list, those games are soft as shite in every department!!

for pete sakes man God of War 2 is one of the best games of recent times on any console, let alone PS2.

Posted By: olympic hero (Guest)  on September 05, 2008 at 06:46 AM

I liked God of War 2, but some people defending the story...have you ever played that game? The story was so stupid, it was just Kratos going around, he sees Icarus..."Time to beat the heck out of that guy." Not a good story, but a great game. GREAT game.

I also liked Halo, even though it does get a little too much critical praise. Anybody who denies that they have had fun with Halo's multiplayer is a liar. You, Derek, even enjoyed the original game's LAN structure. Not even you are immune to fun.

Lastly, Metroid Prime is my 5th favorite game of all time. Its place on this list makes me a very sad panda.

That's about how long they lasted too. That's why I hated FFX. I spent more time watching the fucking game than I did playing it.

I was waiting till you posted another interesting topic to post again and this does qualify. Your list is pretty good except...

Tales of Symphonia - Hell No. It's not even that generic, Final Fantasy will forever remain the worst offender of Generic anime storylines and characters in games. Symphonia doesn't even come close.

Metroid Prine - Hell the **** No. This game is probably in the top 5 greatest games ever. That's all.

But that said, here is my list, in order from least resentment to most.

Hon. Mention: Resident Evil 4, for killing a series I once loved

10. Splinter Cell series
9. Elder Scrolls series
8. God of War series
7. Tekken series
6. Call of Duty series
5. Devil May Cry series
4. Final Fantasy, main series, bar VII, IX and XII
3. Kingdom Hearts series
2. Halo series
1. Grand Theft Auto series.

Yep, that list will make me popular.

Jesus! It is a personal list people! It seems most of you have sand in your vagina! "How could you not like _____!" "You suck, Oblivion is a combination of Fergie and Jesus!" Wow! and Mike Shinobi must either be resentful at his ugly mother or his ugly significant other because he seems to be obsessed with that! People either play Wrpg's Or Jrpg's it's just how it is, sorry to break your heart, and that whole Santa thing, bullshit, sorry to break your heart Mr. Fussy Britches.
I totally agree with you on most of the list, I would of added the Dragon Quest series though.

hallo, dude, have you ever played Xenosaga? Now that's a game with long-ass cutscenes.

I think FFX hit the spot with pretty much everything. The cutscene timing and everything else was just right.
It's the best of the series, really.

But ever since they merged with Enix there was a dip in quality, little by little.
X-2 was about an 8/10, XII was about 7/10 max, IMO.
I really hope they don't **** up with XIII. I hope it's worth the wait.

And last but not least, I'm one of the biggest fans of the series, I've played every game of it; I've played VII 3 times, VIII 4 times, IX 4 times, X 4 times. Hell, even X-2 has been played twice.
Only XII was the game that I've played once and will never pop back in the console.

I'm just gonna comment on the games I've played.

Agree:

Oblivion. In fact, all the Elder Scrolls games are lame. They move far too slow. But having "multiple choices and only one ending" doesn't bother me.

Mortal Kombat. Shallowest fighting game series ever. Super Smash Bros and Dead Or Alive have more depth.

Tales of Symphonia. My friend has it. We played multi-player for a while. I got sick of it real quick. The combat was bland and the story couldn't have been more generic. Plus I'm sick of having to play as super-deformed anime teens in my RPGs. Why is it a problem to ask for adults of normal proportions in my RPGs? Thank god for Bioware.

Animal Crossing. I just don't think I'm the target audience of that game. I don't find it the least bit entertaining.

Agree somewhat:

Splinter Cell. I played the first game and enjoyed it, but not enough to ever pick up the sequels.

Halo. The single player sucked, but multiplayer was fun. So overall, it wasn't a bad game. I just don't see what separates it from all of the other shooters out there.

Disagree (STRONGLY):

Metroid Prime. The backtracking didn't bother me. I've got a really good sense of direction, so after a few hours into the game, I never needed to look at the map and I was able to put together the absolute shortest route possible to my goals. Plus I really enjoyed getting items out of order and skipping around the game at my own choosing.

What I would add to my list:

Resident Evil EVERYTHING (except RE4, my second favorite game of the last console generation, Metroid Prime was number one). I hate every one of them. Awkward controls. Bad camera angles. Stupid characters. Awful dialog. Lousy voice actors. Slow, boring, easy to kill enemies. Simple puzzles that even someone in a coma could figure out. Not scary, even though it's supposed to be a survival "horror" game. Blah. Just writing about them makes me sick.

Metal Gear Solid series. I want to try MGS4, before I give my opinion on it because it actually looks quite different from its brethren, but all the others were bad. Half of what I said about the RE games applies here.

I ask you a simple question: how freakin' old is Halo 1? For God's sakes it's nowhere near as annoying as you seem to make it. And I don't need LAN parties to have a good time, I log on xfire, set up a server and away I go. God Of War II if you remember was actually much better than the first, and I agree siimply because the first was short and the powers you could earn in the second were much more interesting. Now I haven't tried Oblivion but I am not particularly fond of RPGs in general (when I say this, I mean the Final Fantasy sort of RPG), and so I agree in this respect. If there's one thing decent with this article, it's the spelling...and Animal Crossing...

I second the notions about GTA. Good god, I found this to be such a waste of my time. Plus, Sand Andreas was so... friggin.... ORANGE. The whole thing reminded me of a bad rap album from the 1990s; the control felt awkward; the most fun I had with the game was with the jetpack cheat. Going around the world, baby! Aaannd, that was it.

I think my stance on WRPGs would, you know, help me get laid since the majority play like something out of D and D. Also if you proceeded to read on, I said the following: The problem is, I KNOW it's a good game and one that I should like. So, yeah.

Also, I never said I hate Metroid. Just Metroid Prime. And even then, I never said it sucked.

Finally, I never said I hate RPGs, just WRPGs. JRPGs are okay in my book because I like to press The "x" button on attack over and over again. Don't know why. I think it's because I grew up playing JRPGs.

Wow. What a great list Derek. For the most part I agree with everything you say... for the most part. Whee we differ however is on Mortal Kombat, and on God of War 2. Mortal Kombat is the game that made me a fan of fighters, when Street Fighter just could not hold my attention. Never been a real fan of the Street Fighter games. Street Fighter to me = to Mortal kombat for you. Never got why everyone was so in love with it.

Ok, I agreed with this article until it stumbled on to Halo.....The Halo franchise was one of the biggest hits to ever hit the xbox console....Yes!!! But then you go on to say that the story really wasn't good? I don't know what it was....I think you just stayed in your house thought of all the games that you didn't like and then decided (in your fustration to bash the Halo Campaign)....ridiculous of you....The Halo 1 Campaign was the best story mode of all 3 Halo series....Halo was Hailed because it is the best first-person shooter ever made with a story that rivals almost all first-person shooters out there....All the first-person shooters coming out literally takes ideas from Halo....I could understand that you will be angry because you dont know the full story but to say the story wasn't good at all is something that a person who doesn't go in depth to find out what the story really is about would say...I advise you to buy the Halo books and read them...Then post again and say that is rubbish..I will be happy to bash all of your articles......And yes every 16 Player LAN Party gane is fun, but it all depends on gameplay and which game is more fun to play....and it so happened to be Halo....Don't be angry buddy, but you hardly hear anything about MGS4 anymore, that ship has sailed......

Several of those games set precendents that still have yet to be surpassed. It's extremely ignorant and ungrateful to disregard how they have influenced the industry, and how these games force developers to raise the bar on subsequent re-iterations.

Go play SF4 in an arcade. It's easy to pick up and loads of fun. You'll get the hang of it quick. And do yourself a favor and do it with Tekken 6 as well. Same stuff applies.

A critically acclaimed series that I hate but everyone else loves:

Grand Theft Auto!!!

I don't get the appeal of those games. It's so damn monotonous it's ridiculous. And to me the stories aren't at all compelling!! But that's just my 2 cents.

Good list, I disagree with the Tales and Splinter Cell inclsions,Youre right about Halo though. Heres mine if you care:
10:Final Fantasy 7
9:GTA series(played all of them once ,never needed to again)
8:Okami( it just wasnt fun to me)
7:Oblivion(too complaited)
6:Metroid Prime(too long)
5:Earthbound(its too expensive)
4:killzone(not a Halo killer)
3:Mortal Kombat 1(2 was good, this wasnt)
2:Fight night 3(2 was awesome, this felt too buggy to me)
1:HALO 1,2 and 3(no surprize here, I played all three, and each time I put it up and sold it to my friends, I tried 3 times, I just didnt enjoy it).

Halo CE isn't overrated at all it made FPS's what they are today without it everyone would be searching for health packs in a game. Without it we wouldn't have Halo 2 (best game ever) and halo 3

Is it a bad sign that I knew what the #1 game was going to be before I clicked to read to column?

As far as the column, I totally agree with you about Splinter Cell, that game is sooo boring. And Animal Crossing has to be the stupidest game that I've ever seen. Will have to disagree on Oblivion however, but then again, it's an opinion piece.

Somebody in this comment section said Halo 1 had a good story.

It is my suggestion, good sir, that you read a book.

Also, I saw a comment about not liking WRPGs and then saying that Derek won't get laid? When has playing video games helped that in the first place?!

*yawn* How many times has Halo showed up on these lists now?

I dunno, I think twice or so? I'm sorry that I don't like Halo, but I wasted money on an X-Box to play it and was thoroughly under-whelmed. I may be a bit biased in that regard.

Anyhow, I'm glad a lot of you are supplying games you don't like yourselves. It shows we don't all just follow review scores! I really like the comment section this week. Not a ton of personal attacks, just constructive criticism. It's insightful, I like it, so good job.

Also, sorry about your wasted ten minutes. I would give it back, but I don't have a time-giver-backer device. I guess you can not play Animal Crossing for a day and then you'll have ten extra minutes of free time?

dude your list sucks. I would like to see what are your top 10 games......now that would be funny...

WHERE IS BIOSHOCK!!!!

why else would you make a list like this if you weren't trying to make a statement, a reason for your beliefs, or simply an easy way to start up a war too big for anyone to handle...

God of war 2? Metroid Prime?
...
c'mon, let's not be COMPLETELY ignorant...

How did this guy even get a "column" anyway. This particular writer makes this "column" read like an elaborate MySpace page.
Everytime I've clicked to read it, to which this is probably about the third time, it's just "I like this, and I dislike that", without the slightest ounce of wit, charm, or humor to make me care. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.
I'm not really bitching, just an observation I made while I was bored clicking around that this is all that it takes to qualify yourself as a journalist these days, shit I can read on any old message board.

The problem with Animal Crossing was that it was cool for the first 2 hours and then you get bored. You play it the next day and everything that you have to do can be done in 15 minutes. It was awesome on holidays though.

I'm buying this again, I can feel it.

If you don't like my column Beboi, that's fine...but you shouldn't be so rude about it. This 10th hour is about stuff I either like or dislike, it's kind of the point. I expound on things in other places, but here it's pretty black and white.

While I agree that the Tales series' stories is shit, I give it a ton of slack because even though the combat is button-mashy I give any RPG tons of credit for breaking out of the "You hit him, he hits you, you hit him" formula.

Also, Final Fantasy XII lowered my standards to what a good RPG should be. Actually, I'm not sure if it's XII since that dumbass online expedition and weirdass direct-sequel messed up my count. Anyway, you know the one I'm talking about; the one with the bullshit combat and one of your companions is a playboy bunny.

Out of the games/series, I've played, I'll agree on Splinter Cell, Tales Of Symphonia, Halo, and Animal Crossing being overrated. But I've thoroughly enjoyed the Metroid Prime games and the Mortal Kombat series (well, some of the Mortal Kombat series) over the years.

I love some of these idiots who think that because they can blog they understand good journalism.

At the moment, Metroid Prime is my favorite game. I will, however, agree that the whole going back-to-the-beginning-to-get-something-that-you-couldn't-get-before-bu
t-now-you-can-because-you-got-a-new-beam mechanic can get kind of grating. And regarding Halo, I have never played 3 (don't have a 360, but I agree...Halo 2 is superior to the original.

Wow this must be a joke. I get halo, but God of War 2????? are you serious??? I've bought at least 10 games in the last two years, and the only one I finished and had me almost shuddering because of it's awesomeness was god of war 2. The amazingness just kept coming. First of all, it DID have a great story. So it doesnt fit greek mythology perfectly. But go read some greek myths. If you look at it as a greek myth, it's a very plausible story. (Athena, for example, was supposedly born from a terrible headache of zeus. his head cracked and she came out.) then you have the game play. Too easy? You're probably one of them 'hardcores' who play the mode on normal and say it's too easy. If you want a challenge play the mode on hard. There is no way in hell you'd survive with the "square button". You're a joke. The fact that you even said a year ago that you loved the game and now you changed your mind makes you look like an idiot. Boo to your column.

Derek, at best on GOW2 I can meet you part way. I'm blown away that anyone would call the story stupid. He's murdered by Zeus, vows revenge, and returns from death to lead a war against the gods. That's not exactly "rescue the princess", it's original and freakin awesome. The game was worlds better than the original because it was complete with numerous boss fights, all of which were very well done. The one thing you said that I agree on is the button mashing. Something resembling Ninja Gaiden would be much more fitting. They tried having different weapons, but most of the time the chain blades were the item of choice.

As for comments about Guitar Hero, it took me until the third game to have boredom creep in. And I'm so sick of the "learn to play a real guitar" remarks. Nobody says "learn to play football" or "learn how to fight" or "learn how to drive a real race car". Jesus tapdancing Christ, it's a video GAME, it's not intended to be the real thing.

Liking God of War 2...he never liked it. He was being...well he even admitted that the old 10th Hours sucked because he censored his opinion.

Also, nobody said the story for God of War wasn't plausible, but being plausible does not equal being good. People just liked the story because it was so blatantly epic.

Lastly, I played and beat the game on hard mode. Know how? Square button. Suck it.

Amen to not living by the reviews. Reviewers seem to enjoy crapping all over games I genuinely enjoy. I suppose that gives validity to the reference between opinions and assholes. I agree with #1 in fact I'll go as far as to say I don't enjoy any FPS. Yeah I know blasphemy, but at least I have a solid reason anyway as irrational as it is. I like to see my character walking around on the screen. Irrational because I used to be well engrossed MUD's and I also enjoy the Elder Scrolls games too.

Ok Mr. Drew Robbins,
I see you like being a sacarstic jackass.....Yes you're right i did read a book, many books at that....And i know a good story when i read one....I suggest you do the same, because it seems your knowledge is dangerously lacking......Maybe if you read the Halo books, you'd have something better to say about it....Or MAYBE not...Maybe you're just gonna be an ass and keep on talkin shit....but it's fine....you're but one, There are too many Halo fans to argue with personnels who doesn't favor it....so sorry for wasting your time with my great comment...

I agree with most of this list but Halo, God of War 2, and FF VII Crisis Core shouldn't be there all of them are great games that pushed the power of the Xbox,PS2,and PSP.

Another thing, for the people who don't like the God of War series, You need to be really into Mythological stories to understand and like it.....overall the game was good, not great, but good, and the story was actually really well written, Like i said you need to read up on Mythology to understand this game, the Greek mythology to be precise.....If not then dont waste your money buying the game....

I plan to try streetfighter 4 when it comes out. By the way I don't like any MK games after trilogy.

Great article. I totally agree with GoW2, Halo and ToS. Although, I can't stop playing ToS.
I played Halo to the end to try to find out why people loved it, and couldn't... Can't even try playing the sequels, because of the trauma. GoW2, well, hacking and slashing trhough squared rooms bored me, and I don't like QTE at all. Beautiful game, though.

I like Splinter Cell, probably because I can't play MGS. I just can't. I love watching others playing it, though. It's a completely different mood, and that's why you don't like, maybe.

Oh, and I HATE WRPGs too. I'm even afraid of telling that i don't like KOTOR.

"As for comments about Guitar Hero, it took me until the third game to have boredom creep in."

Is it just coincidence that's the one where the original developers weren't part of it anymore?

Good read. One gripe: The MK series. I loved (most) of these games so I have to disagree there.

Posted By: Beeker (Guest)  on September 06, 2008 at 01:59 AM

A game doesn't have a good story if you have to read a series of books to get it. Maybe the franchise has a "good" story, but the games? Heck no, they can't even tell the stories, so how could it be good.

Posted By: Drew Robbins (Registered)  on September 06, 2008 at 08:14 AM

One more thing...I loved God of War 2 and Halo. But, you know, the stories weren't so great. Why are you people trying to defend stories of games that, quite frankly, didn't even need them.

PS2 may have killed the Dreamcast but Sega started the killing themselves by screwing their fanbase with the MegaCD/32X debacle and by not selling the Dreamcast properly either.
Oh, and Mortal Kombat II pwns!

Look at this way (about being sick of people saying learn to play guitar instead of Guitar Hero), most people who play Madden probly know how to throw a football and how football works. People who play racing games probly know how to drive. How many people who play Guitar Hero know how to play guitar or even tried?

Did he seriously just say the HALO was a joke?!?!?

Posted By: Guest#4016 (Guest)  on September 06, 2008 at 09:27 PM

Splinter cell can get boring, final fantasy (never really got into the whole turn based thing), Mortal kombat (too many sequels) although the first 3 where awsome but GOW II! please GOW is the most anticipated franchise out there. Devil may cry 4 was a let down but not as bad as 2 though and thank you for HALO being on that list. Never really got into the game or the franchise.

Ok, I'm going to add one that will piss off just about every single fanboy on this site completely: THE SMASH BROTHERS SERIES!!!!!

Bottom line is that the series is not all that great. It's cute for about 5 minutes, but after that, it gets boring fast! It's a Nintendo-Fanboy Spoogefest to see what it would be like to have Mario fight against Link... big f'n deal!!!

You havent ever played Mortal Kombat 3. Its still one of the quickest fighting games for its time.

"FFX had them almost every 30 minutes"

That's about how long they lasted too. That's why I hated FFX. I spent more time watching the fucking game than I did playing it.

Posted By: hallo (Guest) on September 05, 2008 at 08:10 AM

I would have to agree with this. I gave up after 20 hours of FFX because if felt like I'd only played it for about 10 minutes.

GRRRR. Derek, your opinion stupid!! You no agree with neanderthal. Neanderthal smash!!
I love how quickly people are to wish bodily harm, and insult someone with a varying opinion.
Get over it folks. Derek is human, and as such is entitled to an opinion just like the rest of us. It's funny how some people in the comments actually state some games that they hate simply because they are critically acclaimed. Pay attention kids, he said he doesn't like them, even though they are critical darlings. Not liking something just because someone else likes it is just stupid.
