The Checkpoint 9.15.08: Rock Out With Your Well You Know
Posted by John Curry on 09.15.2008
This week in the Checkpoint, 411's John Curry looks at the song list for the Guitar Hero: World Tour and ranks how excited he is to play the songs!
Good day everyone. Welcome back to the Checkpoint. This week the official Guitar Hero World Tour complete song list was released. Inside this massive, and varied list I found myself both excited and perplexed by the songs that are to be included. I am a true fan of the innovation that the Guitar Hero series brought to the gaming world, however, I am not a fan of the rehashed songs, the unknown songs, and most importanty ..the unknown songs. Come on, I pay 60 bucks for this game to listen to some people that no one outside of some stoner in a café bar? I don't think so. In order to fully decide how I feel about the game I have decided to rank the songs included. The ranking system is pretty simple. The scores are on a 1 to 5 system. One being the lowest, or "Man, I love that new New Kids on the Block album" to Five, or "This is the most awesome thing since Waynestock." We have a lot of songs to look at so let's get to work.
311 - "Beautiful Disaster" The Checkpoint's Points: 4
I love anything by 311 and "Beautiful Disaster" is one of their best. For those fans who are not familiar with 311, they could do a lot worse than to be introduced to them via "Beautiful Disaster".
30 Seconds To Mars - "The Kill" The Checkpoint's Points: 1
BOO. I hate Jared Leto. BOOOOOOOOOOOO! Fake ass band.
Airbourne - "Too Much Too Young" The Checkpoint's Points: 1
Here we go with the up and coming bands again. I am sure that the fact that this band is used by the WWE and has been featured in a movie, but that really doesn't do much for me outside of the fact it gives me some background and another song I'll probably wish I could skip.
The Allman Brothers Band - "Ramblin' Man" The Checkpoint's Points: 5
Come on, who couldn't love Ramblin' Man? Whenever I rock out to this song the only thing that will be running through my mind is the diatribe that ensued between Joe Dirt (David Spade) and Xander Kelly (Dennis Miller) questioning Joe's love for Leif Garret. Priceless addition to the game.
Anouk - "Good God" The Checkpoint's Points: 2
Foreign singer get's hit ends up on Guitar Hero. Whoopity doo. Here's what I know, she has been compared to Amy Winehouse. Not a lot of hard rocking to get me going here with that comparison.
The Answer - "Never Too Late" The Checkpoint's Points: 3
I am always happy to see an Irish rock band be included in any game I can play. Unfortunately, it isn't the one I really want. What the hell is it going to take to get some Dropkick Murphy's on a damn game. Come on people let me know. However, this band comes highly recommended.
At The Drive-In - "One Armed Scissor" The Checkpoint's Points: 5
WHOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Gotta love this inclusion. This is as good as it will get without putting Fugazi in the game.
Beastie Boys - "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" The Checkpoint's Points: 3
I had my Beastie Boys fix with Intergalactic and as a result the only excitement I have from this inclusion is the fact that it will change the game up a little bit.
Beatsteaks - "Hail to the Freaks" The Checkpoint's Points: 1
Ummmm .yeah.
Billy Idol - "Rebel Yell" The Checkpoint's Points: 5
One of the greatest rock songs of the 80's and some of the best lyrics to just blow out in your car. It's songs like this that make me wish I had a freaking old t-top trans am.
Black Label Society - "Stillborn" The Checkpoint's Points: 5
Only if Ozzy is involved. If not it drops to a 3
.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - "Weapon of Choice" The Checkpoint's Points: 1
Again ..yeah.
blink-182 - "Dammit" The Checkpoint's Points: 2
Had my blink fix when I was in high school and I really don't need it anymore.
Blondie - "One Way or Another" The Checkpoint's Points: 3
Rock on! I can't wait until my stuttering friend sings "Getcha, Getcha, Getcha."
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - "Hollywood Nights" The Checkpoint's Points: 2
What? No Night Moves! BOoouuuuuurrrrrrrnssss.
Bon Jovi - "Livin' On A Prayer" The Checkpoint's Points: 4
The second best Lyrical song from an age where everyone was looking for a reason to end up like Jack and Diane.
Bullet For My Valentine - "Scream Aim Fire" The Checkpoint's Points: 1
Again paying for some new band I've never heard of to waste my time with.
Coldplay - "Shiver" The Checkpoint's Points: 1
Not a fan of Coldplay so it really isn't fair for me to rank this at all because I think they are a commercialized band just trying not to appear commercialized.
Creedence Clearwater Revival - "Up Around The Bend" The Checkpoint's Points: 5
THE SINGLE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME. NEVER A BAD SONG!!!!
The Cult - "Love Removal Machine" The Checkpoint's Points: 3

Foo Fighters - "Everlong" The Checkpoint's Points: 3
Been there done this already. Love playing it but nothing new.
The Guess Who - "American Woman" The Checkpoint's Points: 5

The best thing regarding Jimmy Hendrix since I saw a Muppet skit on this same song. Nothing better than the Muppets singing "Purple Haze running through my brain!"
Jimi Hendrix - "The Wind Cries Mary" The Checkpoint's Points: 5
Jimmy Hendrix is the Guitar god. So what can you say about proving your chops to his music? NOTHING.
Jimmy Eat World - "The Middle" The Checkpoint's Points: 5
One of my favorite songs of all time so I am game.
Joe Satriani - "Satch Boogie" The Checkpoint's Points: 2
Hardcore guitarist, but what else?
Kent - "Vinternoll2" The Checkpoint's Points: 1

Italian Goth Metal +Ozzfest = SUPREME ROCKING
Lenny Kravitz - "Are You Gonna Go My Way" The Checkpoint's Points: 1
I HATE YOU LENNY KRAVITZ.

Zakk Wylde's Original Guitar Duel Recording The Checkpoint's Points: 4
Again with the challengers.
Overall, the lineup seems to fit what I enjoy more than the previous ones have. However with that being said, I still think that the system would do wonders to just make the song lists downloadable. I understand the importance of the new equipment but for those of us who just want to play the guitar I hope that ALL of these songs will be available for download. Unfortunately, I think I will rent this game first before I decide to buy it.
Wow, you're pretty narrow minded when it comes to music. You might want to enter 2008 and listen to the stuff that will be played on Classic stations in ten years.

Guest, it isn't his fault that new music is almost 100% garbage.
By the way, only a 4 out of 5 for Livin' on a Prayer? Come on Curry, step your game up!

You can either join the rest of 2008, or you can stay with music from the past.
I wonder how many "experts" said the music this mullet covered gentleman likes was 100% garbage when it was first out?

Way to show how "sophisticated" new fans of music are with your lousy stereotypes that hardly applied to 2% of the fan-base.
Go listen to your soulless music where singers scream really loud to compensate for their lack of singing talent.

The Doors are HELLA overrated. Whew, you're right! It feels great to get that off my chest! Fuck you The Doors!
Posted By: daniel (Guest) on September 15, 2008 at 09:25 PM
You're absolutely entitled to your opinion about artists as per your tastes, I feel you should have been judging less on personal tastes and more on overall effectiveness of the inclusion of the song based on name value, "classic" status for older songs or "current hit" status for newer songs.
I also think you could have gone further with this, totalling up the number of points you gave to compare to the max points possible, and an average points score. And you could have / still can compare it to the in box song list from Rock Band 2 out now.

This is the most childish and ridiculous column I've ever read on this site and that's quite an accomplishment John Curry
I used to respect you for your work on the MMA section of the board but now everything has been ruined with this ultra biased and narrow minded work of yours .
So basically you're criticizing talented people like Lenny Kravitz and Paramore without PROPER EXPLANATION ?
I can respect the fact you don't like them , I'm totally fine with this, to anyone his own preferences and taste in things .
No what makes you looking silly and pointless here is how you're saying "I HATE Lenny Kravitz" without developping it .
So you hate Kravitz ?
Fine
You have one of the greatest guitar riffs EVER ?
Fine
But could you just EXPLAIN why you're bashing almost the whole tracklist ?
The Living End are MEH ?
Fine
Why ?
Again your column is sounding totally childish and immature .
Grew Up John Curry
You badly need to evolve and learn to understand music and how talking about it without sounding biased and uneffective .
P.S : you're definitively NOT "funny" in the slightest form or shape

i bet name dropping fugazi made you feel super fucking cool.
*smirk

Why exactly does he have to explain his like or dislike of any of the songs on the list? I have a few above I agree with, and some I do not, but I don't expect him to explain his musical choices to me. They are his choices, right? I have plenty of shit that I don't like, but explaining it to you why I don't like it, is not going to make me like it. All it would do is give you all more fodder to talk shit with. If he would have said he felt The Doors are over-rated, and more famous just because Jim Morrison died, everyone would be on his shit about it. read the article, disagree if you must, but don't for one second think that your opinion has any more validity than his does, just because you choose to like a band he doesn't like.
Posted By: Toddo (Guest) on September 17, 2008 at 12:45 PM
Yeah before you shit all over a band you should probably check them out first. I'm just saying nobody's gonna take yous seriously if you constantly show how ignorant you on the subject you are reporting... Props for giving NOFX a 5 though. I'm buying this over Rock Band soley for that and At The Drive In.

"Negramaro - "Nuvole e Lenzuola"
The Checkpoint's Points: 1
What the hell is with the foreign music on this game. I want to play something I can understand."
Do YOU Know that Guitar Hero is released WORLDWIDE ?
Do you know that the spanish language is the most spoken one in the world after the english ?
Do you know Mr John Curry that there's life and people OUTSIDE of the US of A ?
It's this kind of narrow minded and ignorant comment that makes american people so hated worldwide since a lot of years .
Stop being snotty and try to RESPECT the fact that YOU're NOT ALONE on earth .
Again the silliest column I've ever read on any single board and that's quite an accomplishment really
Posted By: Mike Mizanin (Guest) on September 18, 2008 at 09:24 AM
Bullet for my Valentine? New? Their debut album is almost 4 years old now, sure it's not THAT old but it's not really new, but why a one? If you Youtubed the song you would know to give it a 3 or 4
Posted By: Jones (Guest) on October 11, 2008 at 01:03 AM
Oh, give Trapped Under Ice a 5, right now!
