The 10th Hour 10.10.08: Top 10 Best Game Intros
Posted by Rod Oracheski on 10.10.2008

Hello and welcome to the 10th hour. Your regular (he just loves that bran) columnist, Derek Robbins, isn't available this week. While crying like a little girl, he asked me to fill in. Something about the Cubs, I think, or maybe he's trying to wean himself off a crippling meth addiction. Either way - pain ahead for that poor guy.

Derek normally starts with some rambling, so let's go with that.

• The NHL kicks off this week, with the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs and unveiling their championship banner. Gotta suck to be Toronto, who is looking forward to overachieving this season - maybe even to the point where they just barely miss the playoffs. Apparently Alanis Morissette sang the national anthems, so that just made it suck even more.

• AIG executives, obviously excited about getting their share ($85 billion) of the bailout, had themselves a party costing nearly $450,000. Not bad for a company that had to be bailed out...

• The Big Bang Theory continues to be one of TV's top shows. Now in its second season it's bound to be cancelled any day now. Smart writing and engaging characters have no place on television - maybe we'll get another version of Big Brother or Survivor instead. If they really want to get ratings, dump them up here in Canada in the winter - maybe in Manitoba, God knows there's nothing else there.

Reader Feedback

Last week was the 10 best cliché levels, here's what people had to complain about:

I pointed out Derek doesn't know his barrels from a hole in the ground:

Those barrels aren't the deadly ones. The red ones are. - You are absolutely right, sir. I don't know if I've ever seen a non-red barrel blow up in a video game. Maybe he meant they could fall on you?

Brad then pointed out the lack of a 'rainbow' themed level, with Rainbow Road actually taking time out from annoying people in Mario Kart to chime in as well. You're both right - that's a cliché classic.

RavenTazECW pointed out a couple of other ideas, including the 'walls closing in' and 'ok, time to sneak' levels/areas from recent games. He must have hated the Hulk game where you turned into Banner and had to stealth through.

Raptor and Triple J hate sky, ice, water, and fire. There's probably a joke to be made there, maybe he'll give a prize to the person who can come up with it.

Toddo the Everpresent wants to know why people in futuristic shooters always wear bulky armor. Because they're getting shot at, Toddo. Form-fitting jumpsuits stayed on Star Trek, where Captain Kirk jumped more aliens than he ever shot.

Soulpower wants to know how the Cubs are doing. Wow, that was harsh.

David continues his unbroken string of 100 straight days of trying to get one over on me, but just winding up looking like an obsessed dick. Good job, Dave. Keep up the good work. I bet you can make it to 500 days, easy.

M:-X hates ice levels because they're slippery. Good point, Mr. Symbolface.

Aussiegamer hates sewer levels, except when he doesn't mind them. Drew, who is affectionately known as "fake Derek" around here, also hates sewers. He has no conditions on his hate.

Daniel loves Derek, but hates the column. I wonder how he feels about Drew?

Truth hates jumping. He blames video-game vertigo, a condition which I don't believe anyone is currently raising money, via a telethon or elaborate David Blaine "stunt" of some kind, to cure. Hang in there, buddy.

BK never heard of Thumper's mom, while Homie wrote an essay about why Picard was way better than Kirk. I think anyway, I kind of nodded off after the first paragraph.

Wait...what the hell? Derek chimes in a little later to say the list wasn't serious. That's it, from now on he's "fake Drew" instead, and that means it's time for:

Normal disclaimer here - this is my list, and if you don't like it that's too bad. If you really cry about it, maybe I'll make fun of you for being too stupid to understand the difference between my opinion and yours.

Also, this is only the ones I could think of and find via a YouTube search. I figured there was no point putting one on the list if I couldn't SHOW it to you. Plus it stood to reason that if I couldn't find it on YouTube, it probably wasn't as good as I remembered anyway.

I also had to eliminate Blizzard games, as the list was going to be dominated by their titles. Screw that, we're all about variety here on the 10th Hour!

Top 10 Best Game Intros

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War

10) As I said in last week's Achievement Unlocked, I'm not a huge fan of the Warhammer IP - I just haven't been exposed to it all that much. One exception to that is this game, which a friend was a huge fan of.

The intro footage, like that of Warhammer Online and Warhammer: Battle March, is just incredibly well rendered stuff that makes you want to fire the game up immediately. You get a decent idea of the units in play, and it's pretty clear that you're about to step into an all-out war.

Fallout

9) These guys do the 'atmosphere' of a game as well as anyone, and they use songs you just won't hear in any other games. I've been getting the same kind of vibe from the trailers used to promote Fallout 3, so I'm hoping the upcoming installment of the franchise has what it takes to win over the hardcore Fallout fans.

As a bonus - play the song from this trailer in an office and you'll hear people humming it for an hour or more. I also considered Fallout 2 but gave this one the nod for being older, and just as memorable.

Abe's Exoddus

8) I think they won an award for this one, though I might be thinking of a different game from the series. These guys make their ugly-as-sin characters lovable somehow, and the intro starts that off on the right foot.

This is one of those franchises that I hate to see shuffled off to the side, but I'm not sure that it could be guaranteed enough sales in today's market to survive. Maybe they could churn out a high-quality (and character-driven) platformer/action game for Xbox Live Arcade or PSN?

Super Smash Bros

7) It's got the old-fashioned bleeping and blooping for music, but it works! The camera cuts and effective split-screen techniques to introduce characters really helped make this one stand out.

And that final SUPER SMASH BROS scream? GOLD.

Resident Evil

6) Maybe this one could be higher, and I admit that I had it up higher initially, but the cheesy acting really knocked it down a notch or two. I mean holy cow, were these people paid in booze?

I'm just left with one question after watching that thing again and again. Did Chris Redfield have to take sneering lessons?

Company of Heroes

5) It's largely taken scene-for-scene from Saving Private Ryan, but when you're dealing with the same subject material...what are you supposed to do? In any case, it's a fantastic setup for the game, blending from CGI to in-engine very well.

Star Control II

4) I would bet that not many played this one, but the intro tells the tale pretty well. Yeah, it's kind of a Star Trek clone on the surface of it - but the surprisingly deep gameplay and the intertwining of combat and diplomacy made this one a winner.

The intro, as I said, sets up the story very well and gets gamers ready for what's to come. You could know nothing at all about the game, but by the time that intro is done you're probably willing to take a chance on it.

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway

3) War games are almost too easy to create a great into based off of. I bumped this one above Company of Heroes because it's not so reminiscent of a movie, and it really sets the scene for the game - including the emotional impact of combat.

Madden NFL 08

2) "CAN YOU FEEL THAT? That thing that's beating in your dog-gone chest right now? Can you feel it? Can you feel what's about to happen on this field, man?"

Well, it's the Eagles [Fixed, thanks for pointing that out - but they still probably lost!], so they probably lost the game - but that speech helped make this the best sports intro in history. Strangely, this year's Madden has no intro at all. Hopefully they come back next year with a killer one. This is the highest, and only, sports intro on the list, which is kind of strange. Sports games would seem to lend themselves to killer intros, but developers are apparently willing to let that opportunity slip away.

Mechwarrior 2

1) Just an awesome intro that will give all you mech fans chills and have you wanting to play.

Like other great intros the action is good, but it's the way the music keeps rising and falling that helps set the tone. It's an intro that keeps you watching until that tragic radio call at the end..."what is your situation?"

Well that's it for this week. I hope this was at least kind of entertaining. If not, complain to fake Drew. If you wish to leave a comment below, simply do so below. More than likely you'll be flooded out by Dave's incessant whining, but try to ignore him - he needs help learning how to do it. Or you can always e-mail fake Drew at Dragonmaster_Alex_158@hotmail.com

This is the part where fake Drew links to people. I figure we have a fully-functioning menu system, so why not let people use it? I'll humour the little deviant though, here's some stuff to read:

Check out Working Title this week, when Jordan's column idea runs short and he has to fill, fill, fill! When Jordan panics, hilarity ensues!

In the PC Centric Extravaganza, Chris talks World of Goo and Tension, plus mods! I haven't read it yet, as the PC column isn't compatible with the Mac. :(

In the PC Spotlight, another Chris (seriously, there's nobody into PC gaming who isn't named Chris) talks KOTOR MMORPG, which is more capitals than should be allowed in a sentence.

In the Hall of Shame this week is a plumber. Mario hit the skids? You'll have to read it to find out.

In the Review section, JLo takes a look at The Price is Right for the Wii.

Nintendophiles celebrates two years with news of the DSi.

I'd have put MGS2's opening as number 1. The graphics, music and just idea of Snake leaping from a bridge onto a tanker, in the rain, being watched by Ocelot from a heliopter still stands as the greatest opening ever.

Oh God, I AM fake Drew. I was wondering when people would notice that. ;_; Curse you Rod for...bringing it to the fore-front. Now the secret is out and I am...damned to be ridiculed for the rest of my life.

I enjoyed the list, especially the inclusion of Smash Brothers...but I think one thing you should have added would be Street Fighter II. The music that played is one of the most memorable pieces ever.

Other than that though, I find it hard to argue.

You're also right about the convenient menu section. I should consider just letting people sort through the stuff.

Is Company Of Heros the RTS WW2 game? Thats kinda lame that you have to watch the D-Day invasion and you dont even get to play it. Or do you? I never played the game before.

Its a shame also that Madden 08 had such a awesome opening but was such a shitty game.... although ALL Madden games suck. ESPN NFL2K5 > Madden

No Soul Blade from PS1? It had its own theme song!!!

I KNEW that pussy wouldn't show his sad face. Keep lickin' yer wounds Derek. It's going to be a long offseason, and Jim Hendry has a lot of checks to sign. It costs a lot of money to get that far in the playoffs...

Yep you play it. It's the first mission of the Allied campaign.

"No Soul Blade from PS1? It had its own theme song!!!"

I had Soul Blade on the initial listing of ones to trim from but it was full of more cheese than Lambeau on game day and wound up just off the list.

I also had FF VII on there, based on my memories of it. I must have forgotten it's 45 seconds of twirling lights before anything happens, and zero action after that - a zoom out to show the city, then a zoom back in to the train.

Not a terrible intro, but definitely not in my top 10.

Wow. Talk about a cum-guzzling gutter slut, he does not even drop a dime to the B3Yond Report. Are you failing to give Props because you have a beef with Mark?

Posted By: Guest#8981 (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 01:58 AM

Oooh, I wanna play too!

Must
End
The
Season!

Solid list, I have no qualms about what's on there or the order. I'm sure there are a ton of games I haven't played that have awesome intros as well. I loved the Fallout games and I'm hoping Fallout 3 isn't too powerful for my PC.

I'll add a few more intros in that I always liked:

Here's one that Drewek would not approve of. Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, although I wished for better endings and the fatality system pissed me off, had an awesome intro that featured many of its biggest characters, all brawling at once. Definitely got me in the mood for some ass kicking.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62ZNww4H8E8
I was rooting for Shang Tsung to kill Liu Kang again.

One of my favorite hockey games ever and my only PC hockey game, NHL 2000, also had one of the best intros for a sports game. Definitely helped pump me up for the violence that was to come.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jACLnezfbfk
Love the Nashville Predator that got checked along the bench and his ass just glided across it like a skateboarder for 15 feet or so.

After Drewek got pissed off at me for my first suggestion, and probably doesn't care for the second one, I'll make it up to him with FFIX's intro. This intro was much more for the looks than really telling the story of how the game will get underway, but I had always liked the cinematic movies of FFIX.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBw_TX63TZQ

And lastly, a wrestling game that gives me fond memories. Sure, the control scheme sucked, and I basically just used CAW's because it would be a pain in the ass to memorize all of the crazy combos of the WWF wrestlers, but WWF Attitude had one of the best wrestling career modes ever. I wish they kept this career mode going in the new games. I don't need the lousy storytelling with the wrestlers saying their own lines, I just want long career modes that make me feel like I'm moving up in the ranks. Here's the video for the WWF Attitude intro.

That was not the FFVII intro. I said the FFVIII intro. The one with Squall and Seifer fighting it out with Gunblades. The rising orchestra and action was a thing of beauty.

Just to refresh your memory.

Final Fantasy VII=/=Final Fantasy VIII. Final Fantasy VIII > Final Fantasy VII, imho.

Posted By: David (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 03:23 AM

Resident Evil should be the all time greatest, I quoted the voice work for that game with a friend of mine for like a year when it first came out. My fav is Rebecca, me and my bud were always like " bitch, suck my cock", when her screen came up, then she gives you that, "oh stop you silly!!!" look, classic!

Posted By: Guest#8256 (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 04:23 AM

No way man. RE1's cheese factor is why it shall endure for all time. Who doesn't love it? "WAIT. COME...back.""Barry. Where's...Barry." Classic.

Posted By: slutnugget (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 04:42 AM

BS to Madden 08 having the best sports game intro of all time.

NHL '99. End of story.

Posted By: Chris (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 06:29 AM

tc i think the poster meant final fantasy viii intro, which i agree is a fantasitc intro nd deserved to be on the list. Could of taken resident evil's intro out, that was jsut plain crap lol

Posted By: tanman (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 07:17 AM

Nice list dude agree with most of them!
Would have added broken sword circle of blood to that list, ust an amazing intro

Posted By: rated grrrr (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 07:46 AM

Wait...I'm fake Dave and Derek is fake Drew? I'm confused...

Nice list, I think Fallout had a really great intro as well. While I hated the game, that intro was just...so good.

What are you smoking, dude?!? Marvel: Ultimate Alliance had THE best opening ever!!

"Hell, my friend is mostly a PC/360 gamer, but he recognizes that as the best intro to ANY game he's ever played."

And just who is your friend that he know Rod's OPINIONS!! better than Rod himself? Seriously dude, you are not even making good points anymore. Might be time to hang up the keyboard and step away for a bit.. Seriously... Do us all a favor and find a different site..

Seeing as my comment didn't make it through the screening process, i guess i should elaborate on why this list is ass.

That mechwarrior intro - garbage. And come on - Madden?

Big time omissions:

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon
Tekken 3
Final Fantasy 8
Metal Gear Solid - hell, all of them.
God of War 2
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance

Just to name a few. Really, terrible.

Posted By: Brett (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 10:41 AM

I was going to praise the list and add an addendum regarding the FFVIII opening. That is until I saw several people beat me to it.

I agree, Blizzard corners the market on FMV, but Square is a close second in my book. Any reason other than that for the lack of "Square love" in the article?

All things considered, great list. I am in full agreement with 95% of it. I'm not sure if that is a good thing or not..... Great article. Thanks.

How about Onimusha 3? That blew me away.

Cardinals fan, that's not why I didn't write the 10th hour this week. I've already bounced back from that...rather horrible turn of events.

Also it's October, not September.

Wait, wait...that...THAT'S SPELLED WRONG!

Oh well man, I look forward to our rivalry springing anew next season.

I have to write this in almost every list made on the site, it's his personal favorites people. He even mention what he would do if you couldn't get that. If he didn't mention Final Fantasy, chances are he didn't enjoy the opening. Again, his personal taste....though can't say I've ever played any of the games above.

My list would just contain Role-playing games, now that's a list you could chew someone out over.

Posted By: JcJames (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 01:33 PM

"Full Throttle" (best intro EVER), "Bioshock", "The Darkness", "Deus Ex", "Super Mario RPG", "X-Men 2: Clone Wars"...

Posted By: JohnEDowney (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 01:51 PM

FYI, the person I was referring to was my friend, Kris. But, I was making a point that had an abundance of reason and there are zealots that see it otherwise. I guess that is why they are called zealots. Reason is their enemy. They do not understand it.

Posted By: David (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 08:11 PM

Not including Blizzard games is kinda silly. Let's look at the major ones...

Starcraft - Random ship gets blown up. Not that interesting.
Diablo 2 - Random bar gets attacked by demons. Kinda interesting, but nothing too special
Warcraft 3 - A good intro to get you into the spirit of the game, but the Warhammer 40k one you included is better.
World of Warcraft - Should be on the list. Easily.

Just because Blizzard makes purty shinies, doesn't mean they're super awesome intros.

And not including FF8 is a shame. The best FF intro, even if the game sucked.

Posted By: August (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 10:07 PM

Surprised Bioshock is nowhere to be seen, I thought it was an overrated game that was repetitive but the first 15 minutes or so were outstanding.

Resident Evil intro is the best of all time, extra points go to the actress who played Jill even running the way Jill did in the game despite it looking completely stupid.

Posted By: aussiegamer (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 10:21 PM

Someone beat me too it, but FULL THROTTLE. Then again, most LA adventures of that era had awesome intros, but FT takes the cake. Sam & Max is my runner-up.

Posted By: The_Trout (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 11:38 PM

FF8 has got to be the best intro ever in any game. I'm glad others mentioned this to you as well. To me, in the realm of intros, FF8 bis #1, and the next closest should be ranked #25... Just sayin'.

It wasn't the seahawks at the beginning of madden 08 it was brian dawkins of the philidelphia eagles talking.

"It wasn't the seahawks at the beginning of madden 08 it was brian dawkins of the philidelphia eagles talking."

Yeah, I should have realized it from the helmet and...well, because they'd never feature the Seahawks anyway.

I'll always have a soft spot for FFXII and Wild Arms

Posted By: derek (Guest)  on October 11, 2008 at 02:53 AM

Rod, they featured a Seahawk on the cover of Madden '07, I think. That was the year Shaun Alexander was on the cover of the game. At least I think it was '07. But I do remeber him being on the cover one year.

FFVIII really should have been on there

I also have a soft spot for Wild Arms and Soul Blade, but they're both mainly for the music.

This list lacks MGS games as well as Tekken 3 and Onimusha 3.

I've got to agree with whoever said Mortal Kombat: Armageddon - AWESOME Intro.

Posted By: Snedpop (Guest)  on October 12, 2008 at 09:50 AM

I agree with guest#1196 about MGS2, I pass that bridge all the time (GW Bridge in NYC) and still get reminded of that awesome intro years later.

Dave,

Your friend's opinion may hold an abundance of reason for you. But I do not know this Kris from you cousin Tom, so who gives a shit what Kris says besides you? You throwing out the name of one of your friends and identifying him as being in agreement with you means absolutely nothing to anyone on this comment section. Is Kris the government appointed expert on video game intros?

If you're gonna use a Saving Private Ryan style intro, i think you're better off using MOH: Frontline instead of Company of Heroes. Its even got the nice quote to go along with it: And when he gets to heaven, To Saint Peter he will tell "One more soldier reporting sir, I've served my time in hell"

Posted By: DangerousK (Guest)  on October 13, 2008 at 12:26 PM

I don't even remember playing MoH: Frontline. Was that the fourth or fifth one? I think I was sick of EA recycling the game by that point.

Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered)  on October 13, 2008 at 02:28 PM

Rod, I'm not an expert on the WWII shooters, but I think Frontline was the first MoH last-gen. I remember it because it was the first (and only) WWII shooter Derek ever bought...not 100% sure that it was the first last-gen one though.

Posted By: Drew Robbins (Registered)  on October 13, 2008 at 10:22 PM

Yeah it was the first MOH for PS2/GC and it actually got good reviews. Anyways, i messed up, it wasn't actually the game intro. It was the intro for level one and the entire first level. My memory is really going haha. Heres the link if anyones interested.

I know you were tryin' to slam me with the "Mr. Symbol Face" comment-- but you're the first person on 411 to actually GET that it's a smiley after an "M"... so kudos to you.

Ice levels still suck though.

Also-- I dunno if I'd put a Madden game on here, you have NO JRPGs so, obviously you simply don't LIKE those games (meanwhile I'd love to see a BAN on FPS & Sports games personally-- least till we get some variety of other genres this generation). Though it's not my favorite game, the intro video to FF8 was pretty damn awesome.

Props on an Oddworld making the list though!
